delivered by our specialist staff and tutor team throughout the year
Our pupils have agreed on the core concepts which underpin all subject areas taught at Oakfield Academy.
On the first day, pupils will spend the first two hours with their new tutors. They will be given a journal and their new timetable.
For the first few weeks, pupils will stay with their tutor groups for all lessons - they may have different teachers, but will stay together as a class. Later on in the term, pupils will be set for English and Maths.
During this first half term they will do a Star Reading test to give them a reading age and a level (ZPD) to help choose the correct books to read.
The following slide is an example of a timetable from a current Y5 pupil in this class.
After break, pupils have a 15 minute session with their tutors.
Within the journal you will find:
• Basic School information
• Pupil’s timetable
• Space to record homework
• Reading record
• Calendar of events
Please sign every week
• Homework given will be English Comprehension, Maths, Spelling and Reading each week.
• KS2 Homework Club operates two evenings a week until 4pm.
• Homework given will be Doodle maths and/or TT Rockstars online and an arithmetic booklet for Maths, and on Google classroom for English. Passwords can be written in the journal.
The Academy offers a variety of rewards related to pupil effort and achievement.
• Verbal Praise
• Communication to Parents
• Achievement points
• Merit Badges
• Accelerated Reading badges and certificates
• Certificates
• Reward afternoons
• Y5 Raffle
Achievement points are awarded for displaying any of the six core concepts.
100 Achievement Points= Bronze badge
200 Achievement Points = Silver badge
300 Achievement Points = Gold badge
400 Achievement Points = Platinum badge
As part of our behaviour policy, pupils are given a new Conduct card at the beginning of each term. Teachers will sign the Conduct card if the pupil is not following the behaviour policy around the school. Three signatures leads to an after school detention.
However, if the pupil has no signatures for that week, they receive five achievement points - this goes towards their merit badges.
The Academy uses the ‘Accelerated Reader’ scheme to track and assess pupils’ reading progress.
• Pupils will take a ‘STAR Reader’ quiz at the beginning of the academic year to obtain a baseline reading age and ZPD (zone of proximal development).
• The pupils will use these scores to select suitable reading books from the amazing range in our library.
• Once the book has been read, the pupils then take the ‘Accelerated Reading’ quiz based on the book, which will then be added to the pupil’s reading profile.
• Badges are rewarded for passing the quizzes, or word count that children obtain on reading quizzes:
Certificate
1 quiz passed
5 quizzes passed or 250,000 words read
10 quizzes passed or 500,000 words read
20 quizzes passed or 1,000,000 words read (Word millionaire badge)
40 quizzes passed or 2,000,000 words read
The Academy offers a variety of afterschool clubs for pupils to attend:
• Pokemon
• Cross-country
• Football
• Multisports
• Table tennis
• Netball
• Film
• Homework
• Drama
• Choir
• And many more…
These are just some of the free clubs run by Oakfield staff after school until 4pm. They are a great way for children to do more of what they love and try new things along the way!
Spaces are often limited, so be sure to get in early to secure your place!
