AUTHOR HANNAH GOLD VISITS OAKFIELD ACADEMY

“On Monday 2nd of October 2023, me and all of year 5 (who were there) listened to Hannah Gold tell us about her brilliant new book FindingBear . I personally thought it was a great and exciting talk. She even brought a little teddy polar bear to show us. Overall, I totally rate this 10/10, so if you’re looking for a good book you should definitely buy one of her books.”.

On Tuesday our KS3 girls put up a great fight against a strong Millfield side. Oakfield showed serious determination and ambition despite being defeated in the final score line. I’m really proud of how quickly the girls adapted and made the game more challenging and competitive in the second half. A special mention for Bea Baylis and Hannah Puleston for outstanding play!

Congratulations to all the girls on their conduct. TEAM LIST: Emily Farr, Maddie Harris, Olivia Deighton, Lily Shirvell, Layla Barraclough, Ammie Brassington, Bronwen Denman, Ermelina Gjabri and Pearl Holden Shack. Mr Mepham.

SPOTLIGHT ON THE ART DEPARMENT

Oakfield Academy celebrates effort and ambition in art. In the art studio, Year 8 have been focusing on 'value': how to create a sense of depth and luminosity in a work of art, and composition: how artists might consider placement of subject or objects within a work of art. This week's shell drawings are from pupils in 8S: -

Luna Psa-Treadway (composition work, using diagonals and gradual shading)

Yolanda Welch (texture, pattern and line)

Holly Packman (gradual shading and texture)

At the end of our art lessons, we often complete a 'gallery walk', where pupils enjoy each other's work and use subject-specific language to make constructive comments; this supports pupils' pride in their work, as well as developing their confidence in speaking within a group.

A big well done to the following classes who have managed to maintain attendance above 96% despite all the nasty germs flying around: 5A, 7A 7O 5R 5N 5S

MENDIP JUNIOR SCHOOLS CROSS COUNTRY LEAGUE

Millfield Prep school - 3rd October

A huge congratulations to the Oakfield Academy boys who represented Oakfield in the Mendip Junior Schools cross-country league event, held at Millfield Prep school. From an extremely strong field of 119 athletes, the boys finished, 12th, 19th and 29th overall. Combining the results puts Oakfield in 3rd place currently from 29 schools, which is a fantastic start to the season.

We will keep you updated with their progress throughout the season. Well done again!

World War II Project

As part of their English lessons, Year 8 pupils are studying World War II. This week, Teaching Assistant Mr Bennett (who previously served in the armed forces) surprised the class when he arrived in his old uniform to help bring the lesson to life.

On the 3rd October, Year 8 travelled to Chew Valley school to play in the first round of the English Schools Cup. After an even start to the game, Chew valley took the lead with a curling corner kick that went directly into the Oakfield net. Oakfield continued to play some good football, creating plenty of chances without managing to convert.

Alfie Light crashed a 30 yard free kick into the crossbar which sadly bounced off and over. Chew Valley then broke away from the resulting goal kick to make it 2-0.

Oakfield then won a penalty which Felix Gray slotted into the bottom left corner of the net to make it 2-1.

Half time came and Chew Valley were the stronger team at the restart, scoring almost immediately. Oakfield replied with a great solo goal from Connor Annetts but Chew were too strong and as Oakfield tired, Chew Valley scored twice more to make the final score 5-2.

Well done to Oakfield pupils who represented the academy so well.

Please can we politely remind parents that the gates open at 8.25am as pupils must be in school to register by 8.30am in the morning, in line with statutory requirements.

Traffic cones will be set up at the top of the car park at 8.20am, to enable pupils to congregate ready for the gates to be opened rather than waiting on the pavements, enabling pedestrians to pass.

Please discuss these arrangements with your child.

Thank you for your support.
