Year 1
Half-term: Summer
Theme: Ahoy There!
In Year 1, we believe that homework should consolidate the learning that has taken place in school and engage the children in sharing this new knowledge with their families. Please choose and complete at least 5 activities from the grid over the course of the half-term. Homework can be recorded in the homework book or brought into school in any other form (photos, posters etc). We teach the children to take pride and responsibility for their own work and therefore we expect each homework task to be completed with care and to the best of their ability. We can’t wait to see your work!
Don’t forget to read your phonics books at home 3 times a week, as well as sharing other stories with people in your family. Please sign the reading diary when you do this so we can celebrate home learning with the children.
Please also continue to practise reading common exception words. Some QR codes were sent last half term for games that you could continue to use as part of this practise.
Pirates
We will be learning about the reallife pirate, Grace O’Malley, in History. Can you tell an adult three facts about her? You might choose to write/draw pictures to demonstrate everything that you have learnt. The video below may help you recall the story.

Materials
In Science, we are learning about everyday materials such as fabric, plastic, wood and glass. Look around your home to spot different materials. Can you draw and label pictures of everyday items that are made from different materials?
All about me!
Could you create a poster all about yourself, ready to show your future Year Two teacher? Perhaps you could include important facts about yourself, that you would like Your new teacher to know.

Time
In Maths, we will be learning to tell the time using analogue clocks. The children will learn about ‘o’clock’, ‘half past’, ‘quarter past’ and ‘quarter to’ times. Can your child regularly help you to tell the time? Practising little and often will really help. The games below may be a fun way to practise too.

PSHE
This half term we will be preparing the children for their transition into Year 2. The children will meet their new teacher in school and will visit their new classroom. Can you write down some questions you might ask your new teacher? Don’t forget to include a question mark!
PE
This half term, it will be our Sports Day. Can you practise your PE skills in preparation? You might practise running fast, skipping with a rope and your throwing skills. Have fun outside!

Colour mixing
This half term, we will be learning all about primary colours in Art. Can you create a piece of art work by mixing the primary colours?

Children’s choice!
Let us know about a skill/something new that you have learnt at home. For example, this could be cooking at home, learning how to tie your shoe laces, or helping with some gardening. Most of all, have fun!
Letters
In our English lessons this half term we will be writing letters. Choose a friend or family member and write a letter to them. You might buy a stamp and put it in a post box!
