E Pluribus
Unum.
Mrs L MacLaren
Proud to be a school in the
At Burscough Priory, our priority is to make sure that every child feels safe, is well supported and treated as an individual. We get to know who they are and what helps them to learn and ultimately, be happy. Each of our children belongs to a house and tutor group, which includes students from every year group – this is their extended family in school. Each tutor group belongs to a House named after pioneers: Attenborough, Frank, Turing and Yousufzai. All of this is deliberately planned to allow our young people to be a part of a community within the school, together, working and help them live and feel ‘E Pluribus Unum.’
The focus on attendance is at the heart of what we do - every day starts new and gives us a chance to be better than the day before. So, with the intention of starting every morning in the best way possible way, our students meet their Personal Tutor and group. When our students are here, there are
opportunities to learn, make new friends and join clubs where they can develop their passions and talents.
In the last two years, we have invested heavily in our Student Support Team acknowledging what it needs to help children to thrive and be successful. In addition to a Personal Tutor, each year group also has a dedicated non-teaching Head of Year. The role of the Head of Year is to support students across the scope of school and to make sure all students thrive. This starts with attendance at school, personal standards and supporting young people to overcome barriers to learning. All to support and challenge them to achieve their potential and reach their own personal ambitious goals. One of our school leaders and the Head of Year 7 work with parents and teachers of Year 6 students. This is planned to ensure that they make a smooth and successful start to Year 7.
In line with the National Curriculum, ours is ambitious, broad and balanced for all of our students. Our curriculum is well planned and sequenced so that learning is logical and builds in layers over the course of five school years.
In Year 7, 8 and 9 which is Key Stage 3, in addition to the core subjects of English, Maths, Science, Personal Social Health Education and Physical Education, students study Spanish and the Humanities subjects of History, Geography and Religious Education. Every student has a weekly lesson of Art, Computer Science, Design Technology (including Food & Nutrition), Drama and Music.
At Key Stage 4, in Year 10 and 11, all students study English Language and Literature, Maths, Personal Social Health Education and participate in a core Physical Education programme. A significant proportion of students take three separate Sciences (Biology, Chemistry and Physics) within their core subject time. At the end of Year 9, students choose at least one GCSE option from Computing, Geography, History and/or a Modern Foreign Language, Spanish
or French from the English Baccalaureate (EBacc) suite of subjects. Students will then opt for two further GCSEs, all of which are popular choices. This is from either the EBacc subjects listed above and/or Art, Creative iMedia, Design Technology, Drama, Food Preparation and Nutrition, Music, Physical Education or Religious Studies.
In addition to the curriculum is planned for subjects, students study Personal, Social and Health Education as a discreet timetabled subject. We plan our curriculum so that children can learn how to be safe, well, make good decisions and so that they can make a meaningful contribution to society. To support this, we plan standalone Personal Development events spread through the year based on the needs of a year group or on a specific need of the school or community. There is a comprehensive and inspirational Careers Information, Advice and Guidance (CEIAG) Programme which support students in all years to have age-appropriate experiences of education routes, work and to develop the skills to succeed in the workplace.
No matter what stage of development, or level of ability, we will work alongside every single one of our children to ensure they become the very best version of themselves.

We recognize that school provides a range of opportunities for the all-round development of our students and has an impact on their personal development. This takes place during curriculum time and outside of the traditional school day through our extra-curricular activities programme.
We provide and promote an environment where children are actively encouraged to seek their interest or talent, whilst being supported to nurture and enjoy it. On offer, there are a wide variety of activities, societies and teams. This includes but not limited to chess, debating, Eco-club, sport and physical education, reading, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) and Music as well as right across the arts.
Every child should have the opportunity for a fully rounded education. Physical activity and sport not only promote a good foundation for a healthy lifestyle, they support the development of teamwork and leadership skills.
Children benefit from our facilities which include a dedicated gymnasium and multi-purpose hall. Our multi-sports court was renovated in 2024 and provides a state-of-the-art facility for a range of physical activities. In addition, we have extensive playing fields which include football and rugby pitches, track and field facilities and an orienteering course.
There are lots of opportunities for children to take part in competitions in House teams and across West Lancashire. We are very proud that some of our students have been selected to play their sport at regional and national level.
