Class of 2013

Dear First-Year Student: It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to Schreiner University! I am proud to be a part of Schreiner University because I believe the faculty and staff here care about students as unique individuals and strive to meet their needs. At the same time, your college experience will not be what we make of it, but what you make of it. The university is committed to providing many resources and opportunities for growth, but you must be fully engaged in the learning process and an active participant in the campus community to be successful. You will have greater independence than ever before and will be making many decisions without the immediate counsel of your parents or other family and friends. With this new freedom comes responsibility. Please keep the following suggestion in mind as you prepare to join the Schreiner community. Be open to new opinions, ideas, experiences, and people. Continue, or learn, to be a good time manager. Go to class! Maintain structure and balance in your life. Treat others in the community with civility. Get involved! Care for yourself — get sufficient rest, eat well, exercise, don’t abuse drugs or alcohol. Take mental time-outs— play basketball, listen to music, take a walk, call a friend. Maintain a rich spiritual life. Take responsibility for your actions. Leave your mark on campus — give something back that will make it an even better place. Seek out strong role models and positive support groups. Ask for help when you need it. Remember your priorities. There is so much waiting for you at Schreiner University. We are looking forward to your arrival and to the unique contributions you will make to our campus. Sincerely, Peg A. Layton Dean of Students

What is Monty Days? It’s a campus-wide effort to get you off to a great start at Schreiner University. Virtually every department is involved in some way to welcome you onto campus and help you make your time at Schreiner successful. Our philosophy at Schreiner is that orientation is not a brief event, but an ongoing process. Most first year students begin this process by attending Mountaineer Days I or II in June or July. Monty Days is the term we use for the first week of the fall semester — but it doesn’t end there. All first year students are registered in the UNIV 0101 University Studies. This course is designed to increase the knowledge, skills and self-awareness required to be successful in your first year of college and beyond.

What happens at Monty Days? Monty Days begins with a program in the Cailloux Center Ballroom at 3:00 p.m. which your family is welcome to attend if they choose. Please review the schedule in this booklet for more detailed information about the activities. Freshmen living on campus: The residence halls will be open from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. for checkin on Saturday, August 22. Resident Assistants, Greek Life, faculty and staff will be available to assist your move into the halls. You’ll need to be completely moved in and ready to start activities by 3:00 p.m. Check in for Monty Days is between 11:00 pm to 3:00 pm in the Cailloux Campus Activities Building for your convenience, the Bookstore will be open from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m, and the Business Office as well as Admissions and Financial Aid will be open from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00p.m. Commuter freshmen: Check-in for you will be in the Cailloux Campus Activities Center from 11:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 22. After check-in, you will then join your classmates for the activities beginning at 3:00 p.m.

Will Monty Days be any fun? Yes, definitely! Besides the pleasure of learning “the Schreiner way,” we have lots of activities designed to help you meet new people, feel comfortable in your new home, and give you your first taste of college life. The schedule is full, but we promise you’ll get some time to relax.

What do people wear for Monty Days? Dress causal for all events! Bring your swimsuit! You will have a chance to swim at the pool!

What if I’m a commuter student? Commuter students are also required to participate in all Monty Days activities. Please remember check in for Monty Days is in the Cailloux Campus Activities Center from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

I have a job, so what should I do about time off for the activities? It is very important that you participate fully in Monty Days. UNIV 0101 classes actually begin during Monty Days, so it’s crucial that you do not miss class. Please speak with your employer now and take off the full time of Monty Days. Activities will occur throughout the entire day and evening. If you are a commuter student and need a place to change clothes, your Peer Advisor can make those arrangements.

Is it really necessary for me to participate on the Challenge Course with my UNIV class? Yes. Actually this is one of the most important parts of the week. Your classmates, peer mentor, and UNIV professor will quickly become some of the most important people in your college life. It is the friendships made and the lessons learned here that will carry you through both school and personal dramas. If you do not feel comfortable with all of the Challenge Course activities at least cheer your group on and support their efforts. Team building is, after all the theme of the day.

Helpful Information What about setting up a bank account? Some students may already have a bank account while others may not. You may find it necessary to open an account with a bank listed below. • • • • • •

You received your campus mailbox (CMB) number and combination at Mountaineer Days. Please have friends, family, etc. address your mail in the following format: Your Name CMB (Your Box Number) 2100 Memorial Blvd. Kerrville, TX 78028-5697

If you did not attend either orientation session, you are required to participate in our last Mountaineer Orientation on Friday, August 22 in order to register for classes. An academic advisor will meet with you to assist you in choosing your classes.

What about my spiritual side? Opportunities for spiritual growth are an integral part of Schreiner University campus life. A wide range of pastoral services are available, including crisis ministry and counseling. Chapel services are offered weekly, and a broad spectrum of denominations sponsor services and /or groups. Representatives from these organizations will be participating in the student organization fair so you can meet them. The Kerrville community also has churches for various faiths.

Residential Life What is an R.A.? R.A. stands for Resident Assistant. R.A.’s are upper-level student leaders who help build a sense of community and respect within the residential communities and around campus. They also help maintain university standards by explaining, following and enforcing university and residence hall policies. The R.A.’s are responsible for providing programs and activities to enhance the university experience. These events will give you the chance to meet and become better friends with the people you live with. R.A.’s are also a good resources and someone with whom you may talk with about whatever issues are on your mind. There will be a designated R.A. on duty every night, so in the event you cannot find your own R.A. there will always be someone to contact if you ever need assistance.

What do I need to bring? So, you have your bags packed and boxes full of your favorite things and are ready to go? Here are some things you don’t want to forget: • Toothpaste, shampoo, deodorant, hair dryer, soap and other toiletries • Sheets (beds are extra long twin), pillows, pillowcases and towels • Wastebasket • Cell phone • Alarm clock • Pictures of family and friends • Stereo/MP3 Player/IPOD • Laundry detergent • First Aid Kit

How can I access the internet? All residence halls have wireless access to the internet! You can obtain a wireless NIC at no charge from our Tech Team.

What about phone service? Telephone service is not provided. Courtesy phones are located in the public areas of each Residence Hall.

How much money will I need at Schreiner? Each person’s budget needs are unique, so we are unable to give you a specific figure. The following is a list of common items first-year students spend money on: • Entertainment (Movie tickets) • School supplies • Food (pizza, out to dinner, soda, etc.) • Transportation • Laundry • Toiletries

Before I came to college, I wish I’d known that... ...I would have arguments with my roommate. ...I could change so much and barely recognize it. ...you can love a lot of people in a lot of different ways. ...college kids throw airplanes too. ...you don’t have to change yourself to fit in because when you are yourself, you do fit in. ...every clock on campus shows a different time. ...it’s not really as hard to make friends as I thought. ...you don’t have to worry about what people think about you—they don’t. ...everyone back home would change so much. ...you can know everything and fail a test. ...much of my education would come from outside the classroom. ...my parents would have withdrawal symptoms when I left. ...residence hall rooms are not self-cleaning. ...there’s always something going on and I must say ‘no’ to some things. ...tests always seem to come in threes. ...there would be times when I’d miss my family and I wish I were home. ...I should not judge people on first impressions. ...my underwear would turn pink if I wash it with my red shirt.
