Por sépAmo año consecuAvo en la clase de Historia del Arte Español hemos trabajado todo el curso aprendiendo Historia del Arte y desarrollando nuestras facultades arSsAcas. Los objeAvos principales han sido dos. Por un lado, habéis adquirido un conocimiento teórico del arte hispano y sus relaciones con otros territorios de la cuenca mediterránea. Así podéis reconocer edificios y arAstas de todo el país y podéis establecer conexiones geográficas y esAlísAcas. Por otro, habéis aprendido algunas técnicas pictóricas, con el fin de entender mejor la labor de los pintores y escultores, de disfrutar sacando el arAsta que todos lleváis dentro y de observar la realidad con otro ojos.

Los frutos han sido vuestras brillantes calificaciones, y también esta sépAma edición de los cuadernos de dibujo con rincones de España. Cada uno de vosotros ha elegido libremente un moAvo y ha dedicado muchas horas para plasmarlo en el papel. ¡Felicidades por un excelente trabajo! ¡Espero que sea un buen recuerdo de este año!

For seventh consecuAve year in History of Spanish Art class we worked all year long learning art history while developing our arAsAc sensibiliAes and skills. Our two main goals were: First, to acquire knowledge of Spanish art and its relaAonships with other countries in the Mediterranean basin, and second, to learn some drawing techniques that could help you understand beaer the painters’ and sculptors’ work. These two goals, I hope, have enabled you to recognize buildings and arAsts in their geographic and stylisAc connecAons, while you could also enjoy drawing out the arAst you have inside and perceiving the world around you with new eyes.

The results have been outstanding while also producing this seventh ediAon of the class’s drawing pordolio, depicAng many spots around Spain. Everyone freely chose their subject and spent many hours capturing it on paper.

CongratulaAons for an excellent job! I hope that you find, as I do, that our pordolio is a nice souvenir of our year together!

Mi dibujo es una vista de Bilbao desde el Guggenheim, un museo de arte contemporáneo. A la izquierda de la foto hay una escultura que está fuera del Museo. La escultura representa tulipanes. Fue hecha entre 1995 y 2004 por el artista Jeff Koons. En realidad es una escultura colorida, refleja y brillante. A la derecha de dibujo está el Puente de la Salve.

Este puente se construyó en 1970. Ganó fama cuando el museo Guggenheim se localizó debajo del puente. Debajo del puente hay una escultura de una araña. Fue hecha por Louise Bourgeois en el año 1999. Bilbao, en País Vasco es uno de los primeros lugares que he visitado afuera de Zaragoza. Elegí este sitio por la belleza del arte en la ciudad. El museo Guggenheim tiene arquitectura bella junto con sus áreas adyacentes. Junto con la belleza de la ciudad, tengo buenos recuerdos de caminar por la ciudad y explorar una nueva parte de España. Ese viaje comenzó mi deseo por viajar. Ese es unos de mis favoritas partes de España por el arte que llena las calles.

My drawing is a view of Bilbao from the Guggenheim, an art museum of contemporary art. To the lift is a sculptor that sits outside the Guggenheim. The sculpture defects tulips. It was made from 1995 to 2004 by artist Jeff Koons. En real life the escultura is bright, colorful, and reflective. To the right is La Salve bridge. This bridge was constructed in 1970.

It didn't become famous until the Guggenheim museum was constructed under it. Below is another sculpture of a spider.It was made by Louise Bourgeois in 1999.Bilbao in the Basque Country is one of the first places I traveled to outside of Zaragoza. Ichoose to draw this place because of the beauty of the art in the city. The Guggenheim museum has beautiful architecture along with its surrounding areas. Along with the beauty of the city, I have fond memories of wandering around the city and exploring a new part of Spain. It commenced my excitement for exploring other cities.

This is still one of my favorite parts of Spain because of the art the fills the streets.

Mi dibujo final es un foto del Ayuntamiento en mi ciudad de 5 días, Medina Sidonia, cerca de Cadiz. Me gustó porque había simetría y parecía que un lado fue un reflejo del otro. Además, había colores vibrantes y árboles con flores.

Hacía muy buen tiempo y me gustó la imagen. En verdad, quise hacer un dibujo de El Pilar, pero no lo puse. Entonces hice algo más simple que pudiera hacer bien. Todavía me gusta mi dibujo y estoy emocionada para ver lo que va ser.

Elegí este lugar porque no tenía muchos opciones. Hacía buen tiempo, y como los colores en los edificios eran muy típicos del sur, pensé que será una buena representación de mis experiencias. Hay emoción y vida, pero con una mezcla de la simetría que nos recuerdo a los griegos. Además hay pilares que me recuerdan a otros edificios que hemos estudiado. El pueblo donde estaba fue muy hermoso y todos los edificios fueron blancos. El ayuntamiento fue uno de los únicos edificios con color y me gusto el color en la arquitectura del sur. Además pasé mucho tiempo en el sur y me gustó mucho.

Mi final project is a picture of the mayor’s office in a small town, Medina Sidonia, near Cadiz where I had my 5 days experience. I noticed it because most of the buildings in the town were white, but this one had color. I also really like symmetry, and the symmetry with this building was great. In addition, the South of Spain is known for its color, and I thought that the building itself, along with the trees and the weather were a good representation of the South.

I chose to do my project on the South mostly because I didn't have many options. I wanted to do something with El Pilar, but it was a bit too complicated. I spent a lot of time in the South for my Capstone and for my 5 days trip, and found that I really liked the architecture there. Also, the weather was great and the colors made the picture feel pretty upbeat.

Mi dibujo es de una vista que vi cuando fui a Bilbao. Bilbao está en el Norte de España en el País Vasco. Es una de los áreas con más población en toda España. Este foto que saqué en Bilbao fue cuando estaba caminando con amigos. Siempre me gusta ver arte en la calle y me gustó esta pintura mucho, porque tenía niños jóvenes y contentos.

Después de haber vivido en España por nueve meses he sacado muchas fotos pero elegí dibujar esta. Elegí esta porque mi viaje al País Vasco fue uno de mis viajes favorites, y recuerdo cuando vi esta pintura y como me gustó mucho.

My drawing is of a view I saw when I went to Bilbao. Bilbao, is in the north of Spain in Pais Vasco. It’s one of the most populated cities in Spain, containing almost 1 million residents. I took this photo while I was walking with friends in Bilbao. I've always loved to see art in the streets, and I specifically liked this painting a lot, because of its use of kids showing emotions of happiness. After living in Spain for nine months, i've taken many pictures, but I chose to draw this one. I chose this one because Pais Vasco was one of my favorite trips of the whole year, and Iremember vividly when I saw this painting and how much I loved it.

Mi dibujo representa mis dos perros sentados delante de mi casa. El perro marrón se llama Maya, y el negro se llama Dino. Vivo un poco fuera de la ciudad en una urbanización llamada Montecanal, pero la llama “Mago de Oz” porque es la parada de tranvía que cojo para ir al centro (y el final del trayecto). Mago de Oz, a partir del canal, es mi lugar favorito de Zaragoza.

Sabía desde el principio que quería dibujar algo de mi familia o donde vivo. Disfruto mis caminos a la escuela y mi vuelta a casa por Mago de Oz. El aire es diferente, más libre y fresco. Asimismo, he apreciado que he podido ver una parte diferente de Zaragoza. Pero más que nada, me encanta mi familia española y mis perritos. Han sido gran parte de mi tiempo absolutamente genial en España, y este dibujo es un poco de “gracias” y “adios”.

My drawing shows my two dogs sitting in front of my house. The brown dog’s name is Maya and the black one is Dino.

I live pretty far from the city in a suburb called Montecanal, but I call it Mago de Oz because that's the name of the stop of the tranvia close to my house that I take to school (and the last stop). Mago de Oz, other than the canal, is my favorite place in Zaragoza.

I knew since the beginning of the assignment that I wanted to draw something about my family or where I live. I enjoy my walks to school, and back home, through Mago de Oz. The air is different, fresher and more free. Also, I appreciate that I've been able to see a different part of Zaragoza. But more than anything, I love my host family and my dogs.

They’ve been a huge part of why I’ve loved my time here in Spain so much, so this drawing is a bit of a “thank you” and “goodbye”.

Mi dibujo representa el CaixaForum, un edificio que es bastante nuevo en Zaragoza. Fue construido en 2014 y es utilizado para eventos públicos y exposiciones de arte. Cada día paso por el CaixaForum en mi camino al colegio, y al principio del año lo visité para ver una exposición de arte Italiano.

Decidí que quería dibujar el CaixaForum porque siempre me ha interesado que su arquitectura única se yustapusiera a toda la arquitectura vieja que veía en Zaragoza. El edificio es una obra de arte en sí misma, y sirve como símbolo del progreso de la técnica y de la generosidad de la cultura.

My drawing depicts the CaixaForum, a fairly new building in Zaragoza. It was built in2 014, and it is used for public events and art expositions. Everyday I pass by the CaixaForum on my way to school, and at the beginning of the year I visited it to see an Italian art exposition.

I decided that I wanted to draw the CaixaForum because it always interested me how its unique architecture juxtaposed all of the old architecture that I would see in Zaragoza. The building is a piece of art in itself, and it serves as a symbol of the progress of technique and of the generosity of culture.

Mi dibujo final es de una de las torres de la Basílica del Pilar. El Pilar es el monumento más conocido de Zaragoza. En toda España, mencionar El Pilar es como mencionar el Brooklyn Bridge o el Empire State Building; es instantáneamente reconocible. Mi tercer día en España, todos los estudiantes teníamos una tarea: los profesores nos dijeron que miráramos la puesta de sol. Mi familia me llevó al mejor lugar de Zaragoza para esto: el Puente de Piedra, con una vista de El Pilar. Fue en ese momento que realmente me impactó el hecho de que estaría pasando 9 meses en España. Elijí dibujar El Pilar para mi proyecto final debido a su estatus histórico y su significado personal para mí.

My final drawing is of one of the towers of La Basilica del Pilar. El Pilar is the most well known landmark of Zaragoza.

Throughout Spain, mentioning El Pilar is much like mentioning the Brooklyn Bridge or the Empire State Building; it is instantly recognizable. My third day in Spain, all the students were given a homework assignment:we were told to watch the sunset. My host family led me to the best place in Zaragoza for this: el Puente de Piedra, overlooking El Pilar. It was at that moment that it really hit me that I would be spending 9 months in Spain. I choose to draw El Pilar for my final project because of its landmark status and its personal significance to me.

He dibujado esta pintura porque esta en mi camino a escuela cada día, y he visto este puente cada día en los nueve meses que he estado en España. El Puente Romano es uno de los sitios más bonitos en Zaragoza, y con mucha historia. También he dibujado este puente porque significa que ya hemos cruzado el puente de SYA España. Hemos cruzado la barrera del idioma, y hemos conocido personas que han cambiado mi vida para siempre y no puedo decir gracias bastantes veces a estas personas. El puente que hemos cruzado nos ha enseñado cómo ser una persona simpática con todas las personas, el idioma espanol, ha cambiado nuestras familias españolas a nuestras segundas familias, muchisimas mas cosas. El año en SYA ha volado, y no puedo explicar cómo me siento por tener la oportunidad de hacer este año.

I drew this picture because it is on my way to school everyday, and I have seen this bridge every day for the last 9 months that I have been here in Spain. The Roman Bridge is one of the most beautiful things Zaragoza has to offer. I drew this picture not only for that but to signify the bridge that we have all crossed this year in SYA. We have crossed the language barrier, we have met people that have changed our lives forever, and we have learned new life skills. I can not say thank you enough to these people. This bridge that we have all not crossed has taught us to be genuine, the Spanish language, has turned our Spanish families into our second families, and so much more. The SYA year has flown by and I cannot thank everyone, and everything enough for making this year one of the most memorable of my life.

Recuerdo el inicio del año escolar, y mi primer fin de semana aquí en Zaragoza. Por la tarde, me fui a caminar por la ciudad solo conmigo mismo. Fue el sábado, el clima era muy bueno, y tenía mucho éxito viendo la ciudad. No había visto mucho de la ciudad ya, pero recordaba ver El Pilar cuando fuimos a remar en el Ebro. Recuerdo pensar que no me gustaría la ciudad, porque es muy pequeña, y que no se pueden conocer sitios nuevos de la ciudad por eso.

Pensaba que después de una caminata, ya conocería la mayoría de Zaragoza. Caminé por Independencia, y decidí ir a la derecha en lo que ahora sé que se llama Calle Coso. Noté que solamente los tranvías van por aquella calle.

Caminando por la calle, miré a la derecha y vi a una calle larguísima con la catedral al final.

Después de ver El Pilar y su plaza por la primera vez, fui al río. Otra vez decidí a ir a la derecha, y caminé al otro lado del río por el Puente de la Almorzara. Allí vi a lo que creo es el mejor punto de visto de El Pilar. Estoy acostumbrado a las ciudades más grandes, y todavía lo estoy, y de verdad, todavía pienso que Zaragoza es pequeña y que con poco tiempo se puede conocer la ciudad. Pero con la caminata por Zaragoza, que era un poco incómoda para mí, por estar solo, aprendí que puedo acostumbrarme a las ciudades pequeñas. Independencia, el Pilar, y el Río Ebro son los puntos centrales de la ciudad: no hay muchísimo más que eso como en Nueva York. Pero eso no es tan malo. En Nueva York, hay un montón de cosas y sitios para conocer, pero aquí, hay pocos, y por eso, se aprende más de los sitios aquí y se puede sentir la ciudad aquí. Por eso, está imagen significa algo para mí. Hay menos aquí en Zaragoza, pero por eso me ha dado más intimidad con Zaragoza.

ANDREW ORTIZ

Elegí esta escena, de la puerta que dice “todo por la patria”, porque representa el patriotismo y la identidad de España, que actualmente es difícil de encontrar en España por algunas razones. Desde que terminó el poder franquista en España, España trata muy fuerte de evitar temas o tonos del nacionalismo. Por eso, creo que la palabra “Patria” está utilizada muy a menudo. La razón de eso es que la palabra puede significar ambas el país, o puede ser a un nivel de la comunidad también. Me interesa mucho como parece esta puerta, y qué mensaje destaca y dice.

I chose this image to draw because of the message and ideas that the door included portrayed. The words displayed read “Todo por la patria” in english, this means “Everything for the homeland.” This is very interesting to me, because the word choice can be interpreted in many ways. In spanish, homeland can relate to both the country, and also community. I felt as if this door was a good example of spanish pride, and how in contrast to the united states, is more based off of the autonomous communities than the country in general.

Mi dibujo final representa todo lo que SYA me ha enseñado. Mi dibujo es la cubierta de la catedral en Salamanca y lo eligí porque SYA me ha ayudado a ver el mundo desde una perspectiva diferente. Aunque mucha gente dice que el regalo de SYA es una nueva lengua, para mí era una nueva puerta al mundo. Siempre he tenido las oportunidades de viajar que tengo ahora, no obstante, SYA me mostró que no tengo que hacer un plan para cada momento. Me mostró que puedo comprar un billete de tren y encontrar el mundo desde allí.

My final drawing represents everything SYA has taught me. It is the roof of the cathedral in Salamanca and I picked it because SYA has taught me to see the world from a new perspective. Even though most people say that the SYA gift is a new language, for me it was a new door to the world. I have always had the opportunities to travel that I have now, but SYA showed me that I don't have to plan every moment.They showed me I can buy a train ticket and find the world from there.

Mi dibujo final es de un edificio que encontré cuando estaba en Sevilla para mi viaje de Capstone en abril. Creo que el edificio tiene unos pisos adentro, pero de verdad, no lo sé. Es un edificio bastante normal. Por consiguiente, no sé la historia del edificio porque este tipo de edificio es típico en Sevilla. Como hemos aprendido en la clase de Álvaro, o quizás en Capstone, los edificios en el sur de España típicamente son de colores brillantes como este. Por lo tanto, este edificio no es especialmente interesante, pero muestra los tipos de chulos edificios que se puede encontrar en Sevilla.

He elegido este edificio para mi dibujo al final de año porque me gustó la perspectiva desde la que hice la fotografía y pensaba que sería un dibujo interesante. Al principio, decidí dibujar este edificio en particular porque me gustó que fuera de un rosa brillante y pensaba que sería un recuerdo bonito del tipo de arquitectura española que está en Sevilla.

Como he dicho antes, muchos de los edificios en el sur de España están pintados con colores vivos, sin embargo, no pensaba en el hecho de que el dibujo sería a lápiz. Aunque el color brillante no se vea, el edificio es un gran ejemplo de la arquitectura española, con sus ventanas resaltadas en hierro y la estructura de una caja.

My final drawing is of a building that I found while I was in Sevilla for my Capstone trip in April. I'm pretty certain that this is an apartment building, but honestly, I'm not quite sure. The history of this building is unclear because apartment buildings like these are pretty common in Sevilla and the building isn't a particularly interesting historic landmark. In Álvaro´s class we learned that in the south of Spain the buildings are often painted using bright colors, like this one.

Therefore, this building isn't especially interesting or unique, but it shows the cool, colorful kinds of buildings that you can find in Sevilla.

I picked this building for my end of the year drawing because I liked the low perspective of the photo that I shot and I thought it would make an interesting drawing. Initially, I decided to draw this building in particular because I liked the fact that it was a bright pink and I thought that it would be a nice reminder of unique Spanish architecture in Seville.

Like I said in earlier, many buildings in the south of Spain are fun, bright colors, however, I didn’t really think about the fact that the drawing would be in pencil. Even though the vibrant color doesn’t come through, the building is still a great example of Spanish architecture with it’s beautiful iron framed window sand boxy structure.

He dibujado el edificio del Ayuntamiento de Málaga que está en el sur de España. Este edificio es una de la cuatro administraciones públicas con responsabilidad política en la ciudad. Desde 1979 sus responsables políticos son escogidos por los ciudadanos de Málaga, en elecciones celebradas cada cuatro años. En la actualidad su alcalde es Francisco de la Torre Prados.

He elegido este edificio para recordar mi viaje a esta ciudad preciosa y también porque creo que es una pieza de historia súper bonita e importante. Este dibujo siempre será un recordatorio del tiempo veraniego que disfrutamos durante un puente en febrero.

I chose to draw the city council building of Malaga, which is a city located in the south of Spain. This building is one of the four public administration buildings with political ties in the city.Since 1979, its politicians have been chosen by the citizens of Málaga in elections held every four years. Currently, the mayor is Francisco de la Torre Prados.The reason that I chose to draw this building was not only to memorialize my trip to this wonderful city, but also because it is an absolutely beautiful and important piece of history. This drawing will always be a reminder of the beautiful summery weather that we enjoyed during a long weekend in February.
