THE OFFICIAL MAGAZINE OF THE SCHONESLAND REGION PORSCHE CLUB OF AMERICA
The end of the driving season is getting closer and closer sadly. With just one drive left, the Wisconsin Drive Reimagined, we are at the end of Schonesland’s planned drives for the year. Hopefully you attended at least one!
There are a few big things left before the end of year!
1. Board elections: This year we do have openings that currently do not have any candidates. We will be looking for people to step into the roles of Secretary, Tour Director, and Social Media Chair. Please email jenscharff@me.com if you are interested in any of these positions (or any position!) or know anyone that would be a good candidate.
a. Secretary: Take notes at monthly board meetings and upload them to the club’s online drive.
b. Tour Director: Manage all the tour leaders. Do not need to lead or plan all the drives, but instead help and verify everything has been done for each drive.
c. Social Media Chair: Manage the Facebook group. 1.
2. Holiday Party: Saturday, December 7, at 5:30PM at Noce in downtown Des Moines. This is always a good time to get together with other Schoneslanders and celebrate our past year. More info and registration can be found at https:// schonesland.motorsportreg.com/events/ schonesland-2024-holiday-party-nocepca-408770
3. Planning Meeting: Saturday, December 14, at 1PM at the Urbandale Public Library Meeting Room A. Any Schonesland member can attend. This is the time to come share your ideas for a drive or any event. We will be setting the calendar for 2025. If you cannot attend and have an idea, please email me, jenscharff@me.com, and I will make sure to
Jen Scharff, President jenscharff@me.com
I have been lucky pretty much all my life. While I wasn’t born with a silver spoon in my mouth I wouldn’t argue about the spoon I had having been sliver plated.
Chapter One. My Dad was not a car guy. He just hated used stuff. Old suits showing wear. Thread-bare carpeting. Ugg! So, cars only lasted two to three years in our house. He was a doctor and could afford it. It didn’t hurt being being besties with JD Ramsey-owner Ramsey Pontiac. Needless to say, there was a constant procession of Bonnevilles and Grand Prixs in our garage. It was in 1966 that my Dad fell out of the Pontiac nest. Instead of getting my Mother a new Tempest (she wanted small) he wandered off the reservation and bought a 1966 Mustang. Bad timing for Dad. Good timing for Bryan. Two years later my Mom was given keys to a sparkly new Coke bottle green 1969 Pontiac Firebird. Turns out I had always worked summers for architectural firms. I had money! So, my folks sold me, for my Sophomore year at Iowa State, a 1966 289 Mustang, white with a beige and green interior. I was quite the envy of my frat bros.
Chapter Two. I started dating my future wife who lived 610 miles away in Flint Michigan. Simply put: 610 miles in a 1966 Mustang was an ordeal to be avoided. I reasoned, as only a twenty year old could, that I needed a proper road car.
My choice was a 1970 Ford Torino GT. It was basically the NASCAR Torino but with a front valence “Styled by the Wind”. Apparently this derivative of the Torino was better in the wind tunnel. Since Mustangs were still hot, I got a good trade in on a deep blue model with a light blue “laser stripe”. I was understandably proud. I drove the Torino straight to my mothers house and parked it at a 45 degree angle in case editors for Car and Driver were inside having tea with Mom. I rang the bell. Mom came out. She takes one quick look at my new car and says without even a pause “Wow, it certainly is big”. So, I turn to look at my new car, sunlight dancing off it’s immense hood, and thought “Wow, it really is big”. I liked that car for about 30 minutes. The time it took to drive from Charles Gabus Ford to my folks house.
Chapter Three. I got a chance to study in Germany. Iowa State had an exchange program with the Technische Hochschule in Darmstadt Germany. That would be just north of Stuttgart. That would be just north of where little baby Porsches are hatched. Imagine leaving an 18 foot long Ford land yacht at home only to be buzzed by swarms of sleek nimble PCars. It tattooed my brain. Including my GT Silver Carrera, I have now owned 9 Porsches of various years. I am a Porsche guy.
Chapter Four. When you loose a spouse you get sucked out into a space devoid of most everything familiar to you. Friends of you and your partner struggle to be friends with just you. I found myself drifting along looking longingly for scraps of what we once were. Then a random buddy, thank you Jeff David, knew I was a Porsche guy and recommended joining Schonesland. And, so it began. The club gave me something to do. More important it gave me a new set of friends that bonded over loving a brand. Being on the board seemed like the next natural step. Replacing Brian Nicholet as Editor of the Spinner was the least I could do.
Chapter Five. Time to move on. The Spinner has been great for me to work on. 30 editions in all. But, now as I hide in Arizona during the winter I miss five months of board meetings and five months of activities. My worry is not being the communicator Schoneslanders deserve. So this will be my final issue. The baton will be passed to someone far more qualified than I, Megan Wickham.
Save room for my GT Silver Carrera at the next Drive & Dine. I’ll be there.

On Saturday, September 14, over 20 cars and over 40 people participated in this year’s MA Hill Charity Drive
The first MA Hill Memorial Drive was a huge success. Nothing captures the moment more than Kyle Yoder’s photo above. MA loved Porsches and flying. She loved Schonesland, the drives and the people. President Jen Scharff organized a great tribute to MA’s life and loves. The weather cooperated. It was a beautiful day.
The first stop was Big Creek State Park with Erik Johnson, his son Sebastian, and his daughter Brynn. After driving through ramp near the High Trestle Trail Bridge where Jim Schar that some missed this stop and had to turn around! Apparently, they didn’t see the little orange cone! Skip Hammerman was waiting at the third stop, Ledges State Park. From here most participants braved the water and went through the park before continuing through the Iowa countryside to the Ankeny Airport Hill was waiting for them. The BBQ lunch while trying to make
This year we had a tie! Wolcott each won a Wizards detailing kit provided by and Kim Snyder of the Body Parts Store, Inc.
Between the registrations and the money received via Venmo we raised $3100 donate to MA Hill’s favorite charity, Big Sisters. Way to go
Attending the drive is Safety Chair Garry Seemann.
Sandra and Craig Bassett in their 718 Boxter. So many Porsches to choose from, so little time.
Patrick and Jennifer Kelly in their Guards Red 1987 G-Body.
Terry and Roy Johnson. Nothing could be finer than to drive to Caroliner ….. in a Turbo Cab.

Registration for the 2024 Holiday Party is now open! You can reserve your spot on our MotorsportReg page here.
This year’s event will be held Saturday, December 7th, once again at Noce in downtown Des Moines, in their Backstage Event area: https://www.nocedsm.com/private-events.
Charcuterie and drinks (cash bar) will begin at 5:30PM, followed by a dinner buffet at 7PM. After dinner, a dessert buffet and coffee service will be offered as well.
Noce does not have its own parking lot, but at that time of day plenty of spaces should be available on the street and in the parking lot that was formerly Ford & Garland’s, directly across the street. Additionally, the Nationwide parking garage at 12th and Walnut (a little over a block away) is free and available for parking at all hours.
Due to limited space, this event will be capped at 100 participants, so make sure and register early!
Cost is $70 per person.
