Can you believe it is August already? Where has this year gone?! Hopefully you have attended some of our great Schonesland events!

We still have a few more driving events left including the Arkansas Drive, MA Hill Charity Drive, and the fall Wisconsin Drive. Please visit https:// schonesland.com/calendar/ to learn more about each and register!

Also coming up later this year will be board elections. All positions are open, but we currently don’t have any candidates for treasurer, secretary, and tour director.

The treasurer reports financials at monthly board meetings, sends invoices to advertisers, and acts as the club accountant.

The secretary takes notes at monthly board meetings. Then these are sent to the president for review and uploaded to the club’s online drive.

The tour director manages all the tour leaders. Verifies for each drive that Motorsportreg is setup, insurance applied for and received, Ride with GPS route done, and any other task that occurs for each drive. The tour director is not required to plan and be the tour leader for all (or any) drives, but instead acts as a backup/assistant for the tour leaders to verify everything has been done to make that drive successful.

Any club member is open to attend monthly board meetings to see what it is all about! We meet the last Tuesday of the month at 7PM. We have been meeting via Zoom. The link for this can be found at https://schonesland.com/event/ pca-schonesland-monthly-boardmeeting/2024-07-30/. Some months we do meet in person at District 36. This will be noted on the calendar.

There will be a nominating committee tasked to find replacements. If you would like to be on that committee, have an interest in joining the board in any position, or further questions please reach out to me at jenscharff@me.com

Hope to see you soon.

CARS & COFFEE OMAHA RECAP

Cars & Coffee went to Omaha this month to join Super Car Saturday held monthly during the summer.

Our drive led by Roy Johnson and Bill Frank started with lunch at the Handle Bar Restaurant in State Center.

It proved to be quite the show. 48 Porsches were there all parked neatly in a row. Corvettes abounded under the 90 degree sunny skies. In addition, they were joined by dozens of Lamborgini’s, McClaren’s, Ferrari’s and hundreds of car enthusiats. Omaha Super Car Saturdays are worth the trip.

CARS & COFFEE OMAHA RECAP

Our first stop in Omaha was at the famous Durham Museum. Designed by Gilbert Stanley Underwood, one of the finest architects of the era, the former terminal sits at the eastern Trailhead of the Union Pacific Railroad.

Schoneslanders were treated to a private tour of the facility. Above our group can be seen in the main waiting room that measures an impressive 160 ft x 72 ft x 60 ft tall. Below we toured early 1900’s railroad cars.

Friday night we dined along with the Great Plains Region at Farmer Brown’s Steak House which features, well…Steaks! Please see Exhibit A above right. No one at our table was able to finish one of them. Above left is our own President Jen Scharff, Porsche Omaha General Manager Mitch Schneringer and Great Plains President Mike Anderson.

One of the highlights of the trip was Porsche Omaha hosting both the Schonesland and Great Plains Regions to a breakfast and tour of their new facility.

It is an impressive building and foreshadows what is to come in Des Moines.

DRIVE & DINE DISTRICT 36

It was not your average Drive & Dine. Hors d'oeuvres served in the parking lot, four course meal, award winning wines and presiding over the evening successful entrepreneur, vintner, former Schonesland Member and professional driver Kevin Buckler.

The event, hosted by Spinner advertiser District 36, was a sell out and success by all standards. Even the weather cooperated.

ps The car was really loud.

Above, Kevin Buckler is the owner and founder of The Racers Group (TRG), TRG-Aston Martin Racing and Adobe Road Winery. In 2002, TRG with support from Porsche Factory, won the GT class at the Rolex 24 at Daytona and the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Buckler would lead TRG to 3 more GT class wins in the Rolex 24 at Daytona, including an overall 1st place in 2003.

In 1995 Kevin and his wife opened Adobe Road Winnery to widespread acclaim.

GREAT WESTERN SKIES TOUR

Great Western Skies Tour day one drive and route on Friday was great for the most part, but we did run into some major traffic on the backroads of South Dakota due to significant flooding which caused the closure of I-29 pushing the rerouted traffic right on our route. With some great help from a local truck, we received some reroute directions that saved the day. We cut some of the remaining backroads off the day’s schedule to make up time to get to the hotel on time for a break before dinner.

GREAT WESTERN SKIES TOUR

On day two from Mitchell, SD to Rapid City the day started with rain, but it cleared before mid-morning. Loved the Pioneer Car Museum, Badlands National Park, and off course the Wall Drug. We then drove through the wonderful Badlands National Park enjoying some of the most amazing views and great roads.

Sunday we drove to “Where the Buffalo Roam”! Incredible loop of roads from Rapid City and back. Black Hills National Park, Custer State Park, Needles Highway, Mount Rushmore, and more. We then returned back to Rapid City for dinner and the night.

On Monday Morning we left Rapid City enjoying some more curves in Black Hills National Park on the way to Sheridan, WY with a stop at the Devils Tower and a lunch nearby. The afternoon was a great cruise through beautiful Wyoming Grasslands and yes, even on the long trip the cars were kept pristine and “debugged” and washed daily.

Day five was just WOW, WOW, and WOW! We left Sheridan, WY in the morning and drove through the Bighorn National Forest to Red Lodge, MT to lunch before attacking the Beartooth Pass driving up to 10,947 feet above sea level. We then descended through the Chief Joseph Scenic Byway to Cody, WY for the night. This definitely was the absolute highlight of the trip.

GREAT WESTERN SKIES TOUR

The following day took us from Cody, WY through the Southern route through Bighorn National Forest to Gillette, WY. We arrived relatively early as Ben Nordman was the lead car and decided to tour the Frontier Auto Museum before checking in to the hotel. Very impressive fairly new (8 years) operation with very cool cars and an incredible amount of car related vintage items.

On Thursday Morning we took off a little later from Gillette, WY (everyone appreciated the extra hour of relaxation in the morning) to Spearfish and then driving the Spearfish Canyon Road with lunch at Cheyenne Crossing before the overnight stay at Hot Springs, SD.

Friday, our eighth day on the road, took us from Hot Springs, SD to Norfolk, NE through the Nebraska Grasslands. We all reduced the state bug population while cruising through the highways and saw some interesting true farm country trucks and cars on our drive. Our lunch stop was in Valentine, NE before driving to Norfolk, NE for our last dinner together celebrating the fantastic trip.

GREAT WESTERN SKIES TOUR

On Saturday, on the way to Des Moines we stopped for lunch at the Twisted Tail familiar to many Schoneslanders from our Loess Hills Drives and ran into (figuratively) a Ferrari Group from Omaha who were out driving and enjoying the wonderful day and fun Western Iowa Roads. They also had one Great Plains member with his Porsche in the group. Had a nice talk with them - good people! We had truly a fantastic time and the people, roads, scenic views, lodging, and meal locations could not have been better. Eight nights, nine days, and 2,600 miles. The longest and most amazing Schonesland Road Trip ever!
