It’s a beautiful day in the neighborhood. The April Cars & Coffee brought good weather and a great showing of cars. 33 Schoneslanders got their Porsches out of storage for a morning drive.

What is it about Gilroy’s. Is it they advertise in the Schonesland Spinner? Is it the great service, great food and reasonable pricing? Or is it that Schoneslanders just like to eat dinner while admiring their cars.
What ever the reason, we had another record turnout. Almost 50 members attended. The Gilroy’s parking lot looked more like a used car lot in Zuffenhausen. You could almost smell the wiener schnitzel mit sauerkraut.

Blue skies dominated our annual drive to Fort Dodge. Zen Master of all things Dragoon-ey, Dave Hill, leads the pre-drive meeting.
This ride loosely follows the path of the 1st US Dragoons cavalry soldiers as they scouted Iowa after the 1835 Black Hawk Purchase.
Then it was lunch at Amigo’s in the shadow of the 110 foot tall mural by Guido van Helten. It holds the record for being the tallest mural in Iowa. ps Tenderloins were excellent.

Piston Replacement for 996 Carreras made easy.
I purchased my 2003 Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet when it was well passed its 10th birthday and knew that it would occasionally need repairs, both major and minor. My experience of repairing cars pretty much starts and ends with changing the oil and filter on my truck.
Not long after purchasing the car, the engine deck lid and frunk refused to stay open. The issue is that the pistons weaken over time and no longer have enough tension to keep them open. These types of pistons are used on a wide range of Porsches outside the 996 model. Since I rarely open either I took the easy route and propped them open with a wooden stick. I sense an eye-roll or two. However, I took the plunge and scoured the internet for both items, settling on Pelican Parts that carried the Stabilus brand which received good reviews. For my car, I needed 1 deck lid piston and 2 for the frunk. I read that some Porsches with heavier deck lids which need 2 pistons.
I started with the deck lid as it seemed more manageable. First, I propped the lid open. Note which end of the piston attaches to the deck lid and the car body. To remove the piston you will need to remove a “C” clip that holds the piston onto the round balls that are attached to the deck lid and body. I would suggest putting a towel over the engine to keep the “C” clip from falling into the engine if it gets loose. Using a small narrow flathead screw driver, pry the “C” clip from each end and gently pull the piston from the round ball. Prior to installing the new piston, be sure to orient both piston cups toward the round balls by rotating the piston.
Next, carefully insert the screwdriver under the “C” clip just enough to open the cup to fit over the round ball. It doesn’t matter which end you start with. Invariably, I pulled one “C" clip too far and had to work one end of the “C” clip back into position. The clips are pretty sturdy so don’t worry too much about snapping it in half.
Next insert each cup over the round ball and push the “C” clip into position. You should hear a “snap” or “pop” to indicate it is installed securely. Installing the frunk pistons is similar to the deck lid. For the frunk you will need a long pole to keep the frunk lid open. Be sure to locate both ends of the pole in places that will not slip. On my frunk lid there are indentations that perfectly fit a push broom end. From this point repeat the “C” clip removal, etc., that you performed on the deck lid. I think it took me about 30 minutes for all 3 pistons. Overall, it was easier than I thought and it gave me the confidence to perform more maintenance on my car in the future.https://schonesland.motorsportreg.com/
