THE OFFICIAL MAGAZINE OF THE SCHONESLAND REGION PORSCHE CLUB OF AMERICA

The road warrior days for Schoneslanders are dwindling down. Just October left. It’s not time for hindsight yet; but, the 2023 events have been, in general, fantastic. Those driving tours, Cars & Coffees and Drive & Dines provide the material that fills this e-mag. Yes, this is my monthly pitch for technical articles or photos of your ride. I need help. Pros are not my strength. Neither is car repair. If it’s broken it’s Woodhouse time. So, get out there and take a photo of your car or document a fix you have made. Submit photos to the calendar contest and submit all of the above for publication. Submit photos with a descriptive paragraph to: shiffler@shiffler.com
BTW, I am not a car guy. Car guys know I am not a car guy. However, in my defense, I do love cars… just the owning and driving part. Especially Porsches. I have owned 9 (so far). And, my family is into cars. My kid (the cute one by my side below) used to work for Molson Coors. Her job was head of PR and one of her tasks was to manage the Miller Lite Blue Deuce NASCAR team. That got us VIP treatment everywhere we went. My favorite spot to watch the Brad Keslowski and the Penske Team was at Phoenix International Raceway (PIR) in the BRYAN grandstand. How perfect was that.
Just a couple more months left of the driving season for those that put their car(s) away for the winter! I hope everyone is going to be attending at least one of the two drives we have left!!
The MA Hill Charity Drive was attended by 59 people and had 32 cars run the route. The route went through Big Creek State Park, Ledges State Park (for those that braved the water crossings!), and by the Ankeny airport before ending at Smoky D’s. The numbers aren’t finalized, but close to $2000 was raised for Big Sisters in Mary Alice’s honor. She would have loved seeing so many people come out to support a great cause on a beautiful day!
If anyone has made the trip over to Omaha, their new dealership is open! I’ve heard it is impressive. I plan on going over in a couple of weeks to see if for myself. But what makes me even more excited is that means the Des Moines dealership is one more step closer to breaking ground.
The club only has a few more events on the calendar for this year.
October 14th is the Dragoon Trail Drive. This is our last drive of the season. Be sure not to miss it since it’ll be a few months before there is another one!
December 2nd is the annual planning meeting. It will be from 1-3:30PM in meeting room B at the Urbandale Public Library. This is your chance to bring your idea(s) for drives or events for next year. Anyone and everyone are welcome!!
December 9th is our holiday party at Noce in downtown Des Moines. This should be a great evening! Please see www.schonesland.com/calendar for more info and for links to register for the drive and holiday party!!

Cars and Coffee drew a perfect weather day which begat a great collection of new rides as well as a healthy share of air-cooled.
Once again we came close to maxing out Cozy Cafe.

Hungry Schoneslanders experimented with a new Drive & Dine location, The Destination Grille in Grimes. It was a rainy night and apparently Porsche owners hate rainy nights. 31 people attended.

The first night was spent in Joplin Missouri where we returned to a favorite of ours: Mythos Euro Greek Steakhouse. Driving tour are not just about putting the miles on. The drives are about camaraderie and getting to know interesting restaurants of the regions we drive through. Our Arkansas stops were carefully curated by Skip Hammerman and Garry Seeman.

The Arkansas Tour is a mainstay in the Schonesland playbook. Curvy roads. Beautiful scenery. The trip, per usual began at the Hotel Renovo. 19 cars made the trip. Those 30 Schoneslanders got to experience amazing roads with breathtaking views. One highlight on the trip was Thorn Crown Chapel in Eureka Springs (bottom left) designed by famous architect E. Fay Jones.
The Flat Creek Restaurant is known for it’s eclectic decor, all you can eat portions and catfish entrees.

The first MA Hill Memorial Drive was a huge success. Nothing captures the moment more than Kyle Yoder’s photo above. MA loved Porsches and flying. She loved Schonesland, the drives and the people. President Jen Scharff organized a great tribute to MA’s life and loves. The weather cooperated. It was a beautiful day.
30 cars made the drive. The format was a Poker run with almost $2,000 raised for charity.
Counter clockwise from above:
Julienne Krennrich, Jon and Kim Snyder, Erik and Brynn Johnson, Linda Laine and Bob Timmerman and Terry and Cathy Lankford.
Also attending clockwise from above: Roy and Teri Johnson, Lynn Rankin and her friend Mia, Logan and Kloey Runyan, Patrick and Jennifer Kelly and Craig and Sandy Bassett.
I started searching for a 991.2 GT3 with a manual transmission as soon as they were released. Unable to get an allocation, I found a CPO in Tallahassee in May 2019. It was a 2018 model with less than 2,000 miles, had never been revved to redline and I loved the spec (guards red, manual, 18 way seats, Bose, nose lift, lots of fancy trim, etc.)
Vice President John Peeler, Zen Master of twisty roads to Fort Dodge, will lead a pilgrimage to Mineral City in downtown Fort Dodge for lunch. This one day drive is a staple for Schoneslanders and a great conclusion to a wonderful year of driving tours. The drive will loosely follow the Dragoon Trail north. Apparently, in 1835 the 1st United States Dragoons did not prioritize straight lines because there will be plenty of curves for your driving amusement.

Arkansas Driving Tours, occasionally, don’t go as planned. No other photo summarizes Schonesland better than the above. Friends helping friends. Dave Sly, PHD in Advanced 928 Repair helps Bill Nowysz (who came prepared with a a tool kit and work gloves) tackle a parking lot repair. Bottom line is that the repairs worked and the car made it back to Iowa without another hitch.
