South County Hospital Earns Pathway to Excellence Redesignation South County Hospital achieved its second Pathway to Excellence re-designation (initial designation was in 2012), by the American Nurses Credentialing Center.

Pathway to Excellence recognizes healthcare facilities that create positive work environments where nurses can flourish, and are deemed a best place to work, with high nurse satisfaction and retention. Research shows that healthy work environments improve nurse satisfaction, as well as patient satisfaction and quality of care.

“We are committed to creating an environment where nurses excel and feel valued as integral members of the healthcare team. The multiple exemplars used to validate each element of performance for our written application is a testament to the outstanding care that our nurses provide to our patients at South County Hospital,” said Anne Schmidt, vice president of patient care services and chief nursing officer. “The credit for this designation belongs to our nursing staff and interprofessional team – and illustrates the incredible perseverance, patience, and passion that our frontline staff embrace, and help us to achieve compassionate, safe, and quality patient outcomes, under what can be challenging and dynamic conditions. I am extraordinarily proud to guide, mentor, work alongside of, and offer the support to them that they deserve.”

The Pathway to Excellence designation is based on the presence of the six practice standards and 69 elements of performance, which include shared decision-making, leadership, safety, quality, well-being, and professional development. For an organization to earn the Pathway to Excellence distinction, it must successfully undergo a thorough review process for each practice standard and to be able to demonstrate integration of these standards into the facility’s management practices, operational policies, and culture. Nurses in the organization then validate the presence of the criterion through the completion of a survey.

Above & Beyond A small note to show you care

A special thank you to Caitlin Skenyon, Morgan Roy, Joshua Guerin, and Dr. William Sabina for nominating me for the Eastern States Preceptor of the Year Award. It was a great honor to receive the award at our annual meeting. I am so lucky to work with such a great group of physicians, pharmacists, technicians, nurses, and residents and they all make my job easy. A special thank you to senior leadership especially Lou Giancola and Anne Schmidt, who have supported this program since its onset. I was happy to have South County Health’s residency program recognized for what we do as a team. Past recipients of the award have been from large tertiary care centers, so it was special to represent a small community based hospital.

Workplace Violence Prevention Taskforce

The Workplace Violence Prevention Taskforce at South County Health is an inter-professional team dedicated to maintaining and enhancing the environment of safety surrounding patients, guests, and employees. SCH Among 2018-19 Best Hospitals by US News and World Report South County Hospital has been recognized as a High Performing Hospital in the U.S. News & World Report’s 2018-19 edition of “Best Hospitals”. It was the only hospital in Rhode Island to receive the “High Performing” rating for knee replacement surgery.

Of the approximately 4,500 hospitals evaluated, fewer than 30 percent earned a High Performing rating in any category.

To be nationally ranked in a specialty, a hospital must excel in caring for the sickest, most medically complex patients. The ratings in procedures and conditions, by contrast, focus on typical Medicare patients.

Best Hospitals ratings and rankings are based on millions of data points, in-depth analyses, and expertise. These ratings lead to better care for patients and better incentives for hospitals, giving consumers the information they need to make appropriate healthcare decisions.

SCH among best in state, nation for sepsis care The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) recently released a new set of hospital rankings that measures the timely and effective care given to patients who have sepsis infections. South County Hospital received a rating of 80 percent, according to CMS data, the highest in the state of Rhode Island, double that of the state average, and far exceeding the national average of 49 percent.

Sepsis care was recently added to the list of conditions that Medicare applies their hospital quality measurement. The quality measures show how often or how quickly hospitals give recommended treatments known to get the best results for people with certain common conditions. This information can help healthcare consumers compare which hospitals give recommended treatments the most as part of their overall care.

Sepsis is a complication that occurs when a person’s body has an extreme response to an infection. It can cause damage to organs in the body and can be life-threatening if not treated. If sepsis becomes severe enough or develops into septic shock, the chances of dying from sepsis increase significantly.

“Providing excellence in hospital quality and patient experience is part of the culture of South County Hospital,” said Bobbie Fay, RN, director of critical care services.

“We collect data on every sepsis patient that comes into the hospital and try to see what we missed or can do better,” Ms. Fay said. “We emphasize a team approach, with the emergency department, ICU, hospitalists, lab and our performance improvement department, sending out monthly updates and soliciting feedback among the sepsis team.”

On average over 200,000 people in the United States die every year from sepsis. Anyone can develop sepsis, but older adults and people with weak immune systems have a higher risk for developing sepsis and a greater chance of dying from severe sepsis or septic shock.

Flagship Society member’s extraordinary donation

Mary Carpenter

The Carpenter family has long been associated with the area along Matunuck Beach Road. For Mary Carpenter, her community was made up of families who summered in the nearly 300 cottages that she and her family built. Within that community, South County Hospital was a fixture that provided an outstanding continuum of care for births, illness, injury, and other medical and wellness issues.

A South County maven Once described as “tiny and determined,” “a South County maven,” “a maverick,” and “the queen of real estate,” the late Mary Carpenter made a positive impact on the people and the community around her. The savvy business woman began her legacy at 14 years of age, collecting 50 cents from visitors who wanted to park a car or pitch a tent on what was once her father’s hayfield. Right up until her death on September 17, 2012, she remained involved in the operation and management of what is now a thriving beach community.

She was known for making regular visits to her seaside property during the active summer season as well as in the off-season. Arriving in her tan, 1976 Cadillac bearing the plate MAC, the petite woman was barely visible in the passenger seat. Her visits typically included shared memories with residents whose families had summered for generations in cottages situated on postage stamp sized grassy sites at Carpenter’s Beach Meadow.

She’d often bring along fresh corn or bags of vegetables from Carpenter’s Farm that came with a reminder that you needed

to eat healthy. On other occasions, she’d deliver freshly plucked Thanksgiving turkeys to her staff, outfits for newborn beach babies, or cut stems of blue hydrangea from her own yard. She was generous of heart.

A Flagship Society member Mary’s generosity and caring personality remained evident in her estate planning. Among her wishes was a bequest to South County Hospital in memory of her parents, Arthur B. and Mary Cashman Carpenter.

In keeping with her wishes, her $400,000 gift will be used to make improvements to South County Hospital, to continue the exceptional care provided to people in the community that she not only loved, but helped to create.

Her extraordinary donation to the hospital represents something she cared about most: the well-being of people and community. Mary style.

The Flagship Society is made up of those who have included South County Health in their estate planning. Throughout its history, South County Health has benefited from the generosity of many friends who have provided support through their bequests and other forms of planned or deferred gifts. Diabetes Team on the National Stage South County Health was well represented at the recent American Association of Diabetes Educators annual conference in Baltimore.

Karen Zarlenga, RN, CDE, CDOE (left) and April Silvestro, RN, BSN, CDE, CDOE participated in a poster presentation on their work with coordinating point of care testing and insulin administration and meals. The talk of the conference was our Diabetes Champions Team which is a multidisciplinary team that tackles diabetes patients needs.

Real Men Wear Pink gives men a leadership role in the fight against breast cancer. Community leaders around the nation use the power of pink to raise awareness and money for the American Cancer Society’s breast cancer initiatives, including innovative research, patient services, and education around screenings and risk reduction. It’s one important way we’re attacking cancer from every angle.

Rick Moffitt, from the Emergency Department, at SCH will be part of the Rhode Island Real Men Wear Pink (RMWP) campaign this year. In October, he has to wear something pink everyday as part of the campaign to raise awareness and funds to support breast cancer research.

Carol Almeida has been a volunteer at South County Hospital for five years and has accumulated over 630 hours running our gift shop. You can find her there every Wednesday afternoon.

Carol was born and raised in Providence by parents who always encouraged her to help others. Carol spent 36 years working as the office manager at Banner Oldsmobile in South Kingstown. When Carol had come to the hospital for some tests a few years ago, she began speaking with the gift shop volunteer at the time and enjoyed the conversation so much that she decided to become a hospital volunteer.

Carol loves spending time with her yellow lab named Brady. When Carol is not volunteering at the hospital, she is working in her garden or shopping and hanging out with her friends!

Health eCooking: Turkey Cutlets with Mushrooms Calories: 190 | Serving Size: 4 oz. turkey | Fat: 7g | Sodium: 308mg | Fiber: 0g | Protein: 27g A delicious white wine mushroom sauce dresses up these turkey cutlets. So easy and quick, these turkey cutlets will become a go-to weeknight dinner.

Preparation

Lay turkey cutlets between sheets of plastic wrap and pound gently and evenly with a rolling pin to thin slightly.

In a shallow bowl, combine the flour, salt, black pepper to taste and paprika. Dredge the turkey cutlets in the flour mixture to coat both sides.

In a large skillet over medium heat, heat the margarine and 1 tablespoon of the oil. SautĂŠ the turkey cutlets, in batches, until browned and cooked through, about 2 to 3 minutes on each side.

Remove cutlets from skillet and keep warm.

Ingredients

1 1/2 lbs turkey cutlets 2 Tbsp flour 1/8 tsp salt Black pepper to taste 1/4 tsp paprika 1 Tbsp trans fat free margarine 2 Tbsp olive oil 12 oz sliced button mushrooms 1/8 tsp crushed red-pepper flakes (optional) 1 1/2 cups chicken broth 1/2 cup white wine or additional chicken broth 1 1/2 tsp chopped fresh rosemary 2 tsp chopped fresh parsley

To the same skillet, heat the remaining 1 tablespoon olive oil. Add the mushrooms and red-pepper flakes, if using, and sautĂŠ for 3 to 5 minutes, until golden. Transfer the mushrooms to the platter with the turkey. In the same skillet, add the broth, wine (or additional broth if not using wine), rosemary and parsley and cook over medium-high heat. Simmer for 2 to 3 minutes, stirring to scrape up all of the brown bits on the bottom of the pan. Increase heat to simmer the mixture briskly until reduced by about 1/3 to 1/2. Lower heat to medium low. Add the turkey cutlets and mushrooms to the skillet and turn to cover with the sauce. Remove from heat and serve immediately.

Mandatory Competency Program The Mandatory Competency Program will run from September 5, 2018 through September 30, 2018, staff are required to complete the Mandatory Competency Program by September 30. Staff who do not comply will not be permitted to work after October 1 and may be subject to progressive corrective action. Reminders will be sent to staff via email.

Staff must take the competency test while at South County Health as it is not available from home computers. Staff are welcome to use computers available in your department. The computer lab located on the first floor of the Bacon House is reserved for testing purposes. Please note that you must have your badge with you to access the Bacon House.
