“Going through chemo is hard enough, but having an oncology nurse like Katie makes it easier,” Sarah said. “She is kind and attentive, as you would expect any nurse to be, but her compassion sets her apart. She is an asset to (L to R) Lou Giancola, President & CEO; James Smythe, MD; not only the Cancer Center but Sarah Perrone, cancer survivor; Donna Castricone, oncology the hospital as well. She deserves nutrition; Susan Hall, oncology nurse navigator; Katie recognition for her above and Ormondroyd, RN, infusion; Tina Rizack, MD; Brenda Ketner, beyond performance!” cancer survivor; Joanne St. Goddard; Kim Carlson, RN, unit manager; Kim O'Connell, VP of Strategy; Donna Gorham, oncology pharmacist; Nancy Gobin, RN; and Chanita Hall, practice manager.

South County Health recently recognized Katie Ormondroyd, RN, with the DAISY Award, an international program that rewards and celebrates the extraordinary clinical skill and compassionate care given by nurses every day. Katie was honored in a surprise ceremony with South County Health leadership along with her colleagues in the Cancer Center. Two patients – Brenda Ketner and Sarah Perrone - nominated Katie for her extraordinary care and were present to speak to their experience with her. “Every Friday, Katie makes me feel like I’m at a spa,” said Brenda who is currently undergoing treatment. “It’s transformative. She takes care and compassion to a different level and treats you like a person – not a patient. Truly one of a kind.”

The DAISY Foundation was established in 1999 by the family of J. Patrick Barnes. His family was awestruck by the care and compassion his nurses provided. One of the goals they set in creating a Foundation was to recognize extraordinary nurses everywhere who make an enormous difference in the lives of so many people by the super-human work they do every day. To nominate a nurse, fill out and submit the form on our website at www. southcountyhealth.org/daisyaward. For questions, call 401-788-1622 or email webeditor@southcountyhealth.org. Should the nurse you nominate be chosen, you will be contacted.

Over the years, we have often honored one individual who stands out by their commitment to our vision and represents our values. This year our nominating committee chose to nominate not one person, but two unique individuals, Rich & Muffy. They share many of the same qualities - like their dedication to the hospital and staff, raising funds through their commitment to the Auxiliary and the love they share for their own family. Together they have 25 years of service. Although, Muffy represents 22 of those years! Muffy came to volunteer in 1996, after retiring from teaching. She was assigned to the Coffee Shop where she met lifelong friends. Rich has always been a supportive Coffee Shop patron until in 2015 when we realized that he was helping out so much, we should sign him up too! During the kitchen repairs last year, Rich kindly began volunteering twice weekly and has been a fixture ever since. The Hawkins family is no stranger to volunteerism. The South County YMCA presented them with the Volunteer of the Year award in 1995, which also included their two daughters, Courtney and Ashley. We feel privileged that they have chosen South County Health to spend their time making a difference.
