On September 10, at Harvest Acres Farm in Richmond, U.S. Senators Jack Reed and Sheldon Whitehouse, Congressman Jim Langevin, and Rhode Island Department of Health Director Nicole AlexanderScott, MD, announced $2 million in federal funding for South County Healthy Bodies, Healthy Minds’ Zero Suicide in Washington County program. The funding will help establish a wide-ranging program for healthcare providers across the region to screen for the warning signs of suicide and provide vital services to further assess and care for those at risk of suicide. “We can mount this program in South County because of the strength of South County Healthy Bodies, Healthy Minds, a collaboration of health care providers, the school systems, URI, our community action agency, business partners and many other social service agencies,” said Lou Giancola, President and CEO of South County Health. “This initiative is a comprehensive approach that has brought in advocates and family members who have been impacted by suicide to bring help, hope, and light to those in need who are going through a dark time. The more people are aware, the sooner they can recognize the signs and connect to the right assistance," said Senator Reed.

“Making sure health care professionals have the training and resources to lend care and support to those fighting depression and thoughts of suicide will go a long way toward getting us to zero suicides,” said Senator Whitehouse. “I’m thrilled to see this funding come to South County to save lives and help Rhode Islanders lead healthier, happier lives.” Congressman Langevin reminded those in attendance that suicide is indeed preventable and a federal grant like this is a good first step.

Zero Suicide cont’d.

Did you know... Of people who die by suicide, 30 percent had recent contact with mental health providers, 45 percent - including 70 percent among older men - had recent contact with primary care providers, and 10 percent visited an emergency department.

“South County Health’s Zero Suicide in Washington County program will use a holistic approach to raise awareness, improve care coordination and overcome the stigma that prevents too many people from seeking help,” said Congressman Langevin. “We need to do all we can to save these lives. I was proud to offer my support for this $2 million federal grant award, and I’m confident that continued collaboration will reduce suicides in Washington County and across the state.” Washington County has the highest rate of suicide in Rhode Island. To combat this problem, South County Healthy Bodies, Healthy Minds – one of the state’s 0 Health Equity Zones – will use the $2 million from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration to improve mental health care with the goal of eliminating suicides. The program will include all major healthcare institutions in Washington County. It will set up a countywide leadership team with representatives from participating healthcare organizations and whose who have attempted suicide and/or family members. The program will train all staff at health care facilities, provide timely services, coordinate outreach to patients in need, and conduct routine reviews of suicide attempts to identify trends or opportunities for future prevention efforts.

Meet the Team: Chanita Hall, Oncology Practice Manager Chanita Hall began her new role as Director of Oncology Services in July. Chanita comes to South County Health after a seven year career at Women & Infants Hospital of Rhode Island with experience in revenue cycle, financial counseling, and as the Senior Division Manager for Gynecologic Oncology. When asked what has stood out to her the most this far in her time with the Cancer Center, Chanita said it was the intense sense of community and contagious positive attitude.

In her new role, Chanita will work together with her team to achieve numerous goals for the practice such as: • Expanding Breast Health services by developing a lymphedema clinic and continuing to offer services from our Breast Health navigator role. • Expand the Palliative Care program to serve our patients who are chronically ill requiring care after treatment. • Formalize a survivorship program that offers a variety of support functions. Chanita Hall

“From the moment a patient walks in the practice, they are greeted with a smile and a great deal of personalized care,” she said. “Staff here have a firm grasp of their impact on the patient as well as their caregivers and it is not like that everywhere.” The staff appreciate Chanita’s open and hands-on approach to managing the Center. She can often be found walking around the practice, working out front with staff at the check-in desk, and speaking with nurses and patients in the infusion unit.

She feels fortunate to have such a dedicated and attentive team around her.

“They make coming to work every day so enjoyable and I am so appreciative of how welcoming they have been at the start of my time here,” said Chanita. For more information on the SCH Cancer Center, visit http:// www.southcountyhealth.org/starthere or call 401-783-6670.

SCH Names Dr. Bob Dyer to Board of Trustees The South County Health Board of Trustees welcomed new member, Dr. Bob Dyer, a dermatologist from South County Dermatology. When asked, Dr. Dyer said he was honored to be offered a seat on the Board. “I see it as an opportunity to expand my knowledge beyond the specialty Dr. Bob Dyer area of dermatology and management of my practice, and to contribute to the continued success of the Hospital during these challenging times,” said Dr. Dyer. Dr. Dyer said he will initially listen to fellow Board members and management team to be able to make the most educated and thoughtful contributions during what he calls a “critical stage in the life of South County Health.” “I would like to see the Hospital continue to survive and flourish despite the challenges the institution faces in today’s rapidly changing healthcare environment. One challenge is for our small community hospital to maintain its positive culture and stellar reputation while preserving some degree of independence and at the same time remain financially stable in the current volatile environment,” said Dr. Dyer.

Before Physician “Doctor” was not always a part of Bob Dyer’s professional title. After graduating from the University of Rhode Island, Dr. Dyer worked as a biomedical engineer and then as a support specialist in what, at the time, was a burgeoning field of personal computers. He then spent 20 years as a firefighter in the city of Warwick, RI. During his tenure as a firefighter, Dr. Dyer earned a master’s in business administration with a concentration in finance from URI and a master’s in economics from Brown University. Dr. Dyer graduated from the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University in 2007. While attending medical school, Dr. Dyer also earned his master of public health degree with a concentration in quantitative methods from Harvard University. After completing his dermatology residency, Dr. Dyer opened his own practice – South County Dermatology – in East Greenwich. Since then, his practice has grown to six providers, over 35 employees, and four locations. Outside of his practice and the SCH Board of Trustees, Dr. Dyer serves as chief of dermatology at Harvard University Health Services, treasurer of the Rhode Island Dermatology Society, and is a member of the American Academy of Dermatology, American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, the Dermatology Foundation, the Skin Cancer Foundation, the American Medical Association, and the Rhode Island Medical Society.
