A Legacy of the Arts
Conchita Espinosa, a classically trained pianist with an international career, founded Conchita Espinosa Academy in 1933. Her vision of education was formed through her belief in the power of music and understanding that the arts inspire, transform, enhance, and stimulate young minds.
Today, research across the areas of neuroscience, cognitive development and academic achievement, social-emotional learning, creativity and innovation, and motivation and engagement in school support what Conchita knew over 90 years ago – that in addition to their intrinsic value in nurturing the human spirit, the arts are central to a complete education and fuel multiple areas of learning.
Education at CEA is grounded in the balance between discipline and human expression, working in partnership with a rigorous academic program and human-centered environment. With three generations of dedicated family leadership, CEA continues to educate children following The Espinosa MethodTM – Conchita’s vision of a transformational, forward-thinking education, which has grown and transformed with the evolving world.
The Espinosa MethodTM
Conchita Espinosa Academy, with its unique educational approach, is a cornerstone institution for academic achievement and arts education. Beyond its exemplary curriculum, which emboldens its graduates for success in the top high schools across South Florida
and beyond, there is a particular quality unique to the “Conchita student” that builds on their innate spirit and enables them to thrive in life.
Central to CEA’s methodology is the idea that children who feel valued, supported, challenged, and inspired, will thrive. Through a balanced and well-rounded curriculum, age- and developmentally-appropriate programs, and genuine confidence in their abilities, students develop a love of learning because they love to be in school. They navigate seamlessly from a dynamic school day to the Conservatory of the Arts, giving them the opportunity to experience more than a school. They learn by living and experiencing numerous facets of life – from academics to sports, the development of character, and the integral role of the arts as part of life.
The sacred years of childhood…
In a world that begs children to grow up faster and faster, there is increasingly limited space for children to be children and embrace each unique stage of their lives. Respect for the child and an understanding of the importance of the childhood years are foundational to CEA’s mission and success. Students experience the balance between a structured learning environment and the space and freedom to be themselves, ask questions, create, and grow up at a pace that is appropriate for their age. Character education is woven into daily life through opportunities to observe and practice personal responsibility, kindness, respect, manners, leadership, empathy, resilience, patience, and integrity.
“mejor, mejor
D.R.E.A.M.S.
Exposure to a wide range of subjects help students create connections and acquire real-world life experience. All CEA students take D.R.E.A.M.S. classes: Dance, Religion, Español, Art, Music, and Sports. The Spanish program, Español Para La Vida, is accredited by the Instituto Cervantes, making CEA one of only two K-8 schools in the country to be a Centro Acreditado Cervantes.
Conservatory of the Arts
The Conservatory of the Arts (CEC) is located within th e CEA campus and exposes students to a world beyond the academic classroom. Open to CEA students and the community at large, CEC offers conservatory-style training in dance, music, visual arts, and martial arts from beginner to professional levels. Faculty are handpicked for their excellent teaching skills and reputation in their respective areas of expertise. The goal of each faculty member is to encourage their students to be well-rounded artists with excellent technique and a deep respect and love for the arts.
Students transition from the school to the Conservatory during the school day for their dance, music, and art classes, giving them access to a professional artist faculty from a young age, and opening their eyes to the discipline, beauty, and range of possibilities within the arts. Beyond the school day, students may continue their studies in the Conservatory, with a more dedicated and serious approach to their discipline of choice.
and artistic development, creating artists and human beings who are deeply connected to each other, their teachers, and community.
CEA’s Athletic Department offers opportunities for students from preschool through middle school to participate in competitive and non-competitive after-school sports programs and teams. The Cross-Country and Track program ranks at the state level, winning numerous state championship titles in both the individual and team levels. Competitive sports include basketball, soccer, flag football, and volleyball.
Mastery
In the Mastery Program (3rd-8th grade), students are inspired to discover and develop an area of focus and passion. From dance to track, music to cooking, visual arts to S.T.E.A.M., cinema, writing, and more, students take time to reflect on their personal areas of interest and ability, and undergo a placement process into the most appropriate program for them at that time. Students grow in their chosen area, and develop character through commitment, and foster the resilience, patience, and pride that comes with working towards “mastery” of a given area.
mejor y mejor.”
human beings.
CEA provides a dynamic, intimate and nurturing environment that helps students grow into confident human beings with curious minds, healthy bodies, and strong civic, spiritual, and cultural values. Through its demanding academic program, Conservatory of the Arts, athletic division, and mastery program, students are challenged and inspired to grow as passionate thinkers and doers who make an impact on their communities. Each child is seen and respected as an individual, keeping the spirit of love and respect that is the trademark of CEA and The Espinosa Method™.

Building Careers Through Skills, Purpose and Lasting Fulfillment
A Purpose Beyond Passion
Congratulations! You got your kid through algebra, soccer games, and approximately one million tuition checks. Now, there’s just one final challenge: help them figure out what career to pursue. No pressure right?! Most parents fall back on the comforting classic: “Follow your passion.” It sounds supportive. Noble, even. You don’t want your kid stuck in some boring job like the one you had. You want them to be happy. But that advice may actually be backwards.
In his book So Good They Can’t Ignore You, Georgetown University professor of computer science Cal Newport explains that passion usually comes after you build skills, not before. The title of the book is borrowed from comedian Steve Martin’s advice for success: become so undeniably good that people can’t ignore you. In other words, fulfillment isn’t about waiting for inspiration to strike; it’s about becoming excellent at something valuable and letting passion grow from there.
We love stories about people who “just knew” what they were meant to do. It makes a neat narrative. Think of the actors, musicians, or athletes we admire. They followed their passion and look where it got them! But those stories are misleading. They are classic cases of survivorship bias. We see the tiny percentage who made it big, not the many who tried and did not. From the outside, it looks like passion came first. In reality, what makes these people so passionate is that they reached the very top of their fields. Their skills created the conditions for passion.
When a screenwriter wins an Oscar, it looks like passion that paid off. What we don’t see are the years of rewrites, rejection, and late nights that built the skills to help them finally break through. That’s why people call it the ten-year overnight success. It only looks instant because we missed the decade of mastery behind it.
The same principle applies in business. Take Steve Jobs. In So Good They Can’t Ignore You, Newport notes that Jobs originally wanted to be a Zen teacher and even traveled to India to study Eastern Philosophy. If he had chased that passion, Apple might not exist today. Instead, Jobs got really good at design and electronics. He tinkered in his garage, teamed up with Steve Wozniak, and developed an obsession with making technology sleek and simple. The mastery came first. The passion we now associate with his career followed later. So, if “follow your passion” is misleading, what actually works?
THE SKILL BUILDING ALTERNATIVE
Cal Newport has a term for the thing that actually leads to fulfilling work: career capital. Think of it like the currency you earn by getting really, really good at something. The rarer and more valuable
your skills, the more career capital you have. And just like actual money, you can trade that capital for the stuff everyone says they want in a job: autonomy, creativity, flexibility, purpose.
In So Good They Can’t Ignore You, Newport tells the story of two people. Lisa quit her marketing job to chase her true passion for yoga. She opened a studio before acquiring the skills she needed to run it, and you can guess how that ended. Meanwhile, Joe worked in design, but it wasn’t his lifelong dream. If it were up to him, he would have spent all his time on the ski slopes. But instead of dropping everything to chase that passion, he doubled down on his design, built rare skills, and gained leverage. With that career capital, Joe was able to shape his career so it left him time for skiing, the thing he truly loved. Whether passion ends up inside the work itself or outside of it, the pattern is the same: passion comes after mastery.
HOW PARENTS CAN GUIDE TEENS
All of this sounds good in theory, but how do you actually guide your teen? The key is to help them direct their energy into collecting experiences and building skills that could turn into passion later.
Let’s start with college. Unless your kid is aiming for something specialized like medicine or engineering, their major isn’t the be-all and end-all. What matters more is whether the program pushes them to think critically, write and speak well, solve problems, or master technical tools. A challenging major that builds transferable skills is always a smarter bet than chasing a “passion major” that sounds fun but won’t necessarily prepare them for the real world. For example, you don’t have to major in marketing to build a career in it. Sometimes the less obvious major can give students an even stronger foundation to build on later.
And since we’re talking about college, let’s be real: the price tag matters. It’s better to think about cost before you commit rather than after graduation when the first loan bill shows up in your mailbox like an unwelcome subscription you can’t cancel.
Freedom is a gift, and it is much easier to build a career you love if you are not shackled to a job just to cover loan payments. Sometimes that means choosing a less prestigious school or sticking closer to home, and that is more than okay.
And learning doesn’t stop in the classroom. The same principle applies to what they do outside school. Which brings us to hobbies. Encourage your teen to pick one or two things and actually stick with them, even when the initial excitement wears off. Passion rarely shows up on day one; it grows when you keep showing up and get better over time.
Cooking teaches patience and precision, sports build teamwork and discipline, coding sharpens problem-solving, and volunteering develops empathy and responsibility. The point isn’t to turn every interest into a career, but to let kids practice persistence and see what it feels like to improve. Sometimes the thing that starts out as “just a hobby” ends up becoming the very skill that opens doors later.
And then there’s real-world exposure. Shadowing and internships are gold. The more, the better. Plenty of new lawyers expect their career to be like Legally Blonde, only to find themselves trapped in a conference room, reading contracts about two pharmaceutical companies merging for ten hours straight. Getting a sneak peek early saves kids from chasing glossy career fantasies that don’t match reality. If you don’t have easy access to internships, encourage your teen to talk to adults about their jobs or listen to career-focused podcasts. Each episode of Working from Slate features someone in a different profession, from teachers and grief counselors to shoemakers and UPS drivers, explaining what they actually do all day.
At the end of the day, blindly declaring a passion won’t magically clear up the confusion about what career your kid should pursue. What does help is building the habits that lead to mastery. Curiosity, resilience, and persistence are the qualities that turn skills into career capital and, eventually, fulfillment.
Since we spend so much of our lives at work, it’s smart to want it to be enjoyable. But lasting satisfaction doesn’t come from chasing a passion label out of thin air. So instead of asking, “What are you passionate about?” try asking, “What can you get really good at?” It’s a subtle shift, but one that can change the entire trajectory of a career and a life.
That does not mean teens should shy away from artistic or unconventional paths. In fact, So Good They Can’t Ignore You profiles everyone from pro surfers to singers, showing that even in dream jobs, what separates the few who thrive is the depth of their skills. The principle holds whether your kid dreams of coding apps, designing jewelry, composing a symphony, or performing in the arts. Those careers are absolutely possible, but the same rule applies: skill and persistence have to come first. Passion follows mastery, not the other way around.

The Mission of Alexander Montessori School
To cultivate children’s natural curiosity, independence, and love of learning as they discover the interdependent nature of life, explore their unique purpose, and peacefully transform the world.
Our Educational Philosophy
We are committed to Maria Montessori’s philosophical concept of “The Cosmic Goal of Education.” For us, this means that academic success and its products have their highest meaning when they contribute to the progress of humanity. Our motto comes from Montessori’s observations of the young child’s often spoken request that emphasizes the essential foundation of independence: “Help me to help myself.” Our motto explains that we strive to impart to the children the highest motive for education: “Help me to help myself that I may help others.” These goals of a love for learning and love for others are summarized in our school-wide motto: “To learn to love to learn.”

ADVANCED STUDIES 101
Exploring AP Courses, IB Courses, and Other Advanced Coursework Options
High school isn’t what it used to be. Back in the day, teenagers attended their local high school, took whatever classes were offered, and hoped the cafeteria chicken nuggets weren’t frozen in the middle. Now? Choosing the right school feels more like planning a wedding minus the fun cake tasting. The options are broader, the stakes feel higher, and it’s not always clear which path leads where.
As a parent, you want to guide your child toward a school that will prepare them for college, scholarships, and a successful future. But between the acronyms, applications, and competing program options like AP, IB, and dual enrollment classes, it can be hard to know the difference. The good news? This guide breaks it all down so you can understand the options and choose the path that best fits your family. So, let’s start by looking at the most common advanced coursework options, beginning with Honors classes.
HONORS
Honors classes are often the first step into advanced coursework. They move at a faster pace than standard classes, dive deeper into the material, and usually include extra reading or writing assignments. The upside? Most schools give these courses extra weight when calculating GPA, which means students can boost their class ranking while challenging themselves. Because AP, IB, and dual enrollment classes are usually reserved for upperclassmen, Honors often serves as the bridge. It lets freshmen and sophomores stretch academically while preparing for the demands of advanced programs later on. Colleges see Honors courses as a sign of ambition, though they typically don’t carry the same weight as AP, IB, or dual enrollment classes. For underclassmen, Honors is often the best way to build a foundation for AP, IB, or dual enrollment down the road.
ADVANCED PLACEMENT
Advanced Placement (AP) classes are regular high school courses that use a college-level curriculum created by the College Board. At the end of the school year in May, students take a national exam scored from 1 to 5. A score of 3 or higher is generally considered passing and can earn the student college credit, often letting them skip an introductory course once they start college. For example, a student who passes AP English Literature may be able to bypass English 101, a required core class in college, and move straight into more advanced coursework.
If they don’t pass the AP exam, they don’t earn college credit, but the class is still weighted more heavily for GPA and
strengthens their transcript. For those who do pass, the payoff can be real: earning college credit in high school means fewer required classes in college, which can help students graduate sooner and save on tuition.
Most schools open AP classes to juniors and seniors, though a few allow sophomores to start with introductory subjects. Many also require students to be on the Honors track or meet certain GPA requirements in order to enroll in AP classes. Because eligibility often depends on earlier performance, it’s worth looking into AP pathways as early as freshman year to be sure your child is on track. The benefits are clear: AP classes are rigorous, widely recognized by U.S. colleges, and affordable. In the 2024-2025 school year, the average cost of an AP test was $98. But AP classes aren’t the only way to earn credit early. Another path is dual enrollment.
DUAL ENROLLMENT
Dual enrollment is basically a two-for-one deal: students take a high school class that also counts for college credit. In South Florida private schools, this usually happens through partnerships with nearby universities such as St. Thomas University, Florida International University, or the University of Miami, which approve certain high school courses for dual credit. That said, dual enrollment usually comes with costs, whether tuition, fees, or materials. It’s typically more expensive than AP classes, where the only expense is the exam fee. Exact costs depend on the school’s agreement with its partner university.
The appeal is obvious: students earn real college credit just by passing their high school class. For example, a high school junior taking dual enrollment English might satisfy a college freshman composition requirement before ever setting foot on campus. Unlike AP classes, where everything rides on one high-stakes test in May, dual enrollment rewards steady effort throughout the year. Some schools even double up, offering a course that counts for both AP and dual enrollment, giving students two shots at earning credit.
There is one caveat: while dual enrollment credits are widely accepted, not every college will take them. Families should check transfer policies in advance.
Overall, dual enrollment is a fantastic option for students who prefer steady coursework and guaranteed credit over a single high-pressure exam. And because these classes are usually weighted like AP or IB, students get a GPA boost along with real college credit. Next, let’s look at another option with its own distinct philosophy: the International Baccalaureate program.
INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE
The International Baccalaureate, or IB, was born in Switzerland and has grown into one of the most respected advanced programs in the world. Where AP is à la carte and lets kids dive deep into individual subjects, IB is the full tasting menu. It’s a structured two-year diploma program for juniors and seniors that emphasizes balance, breadth, and big-picture learning.
What sets IB apart are the extra enrichment requirements: a philosophy-style course called Theory of Knowledge, a 4,000-word Extended Essay, and service hours centered around arts, physical activity, and community work. This means more writing and reflection than AP or dual enrollment, which makes IB especially demanding and comprehensive. Basically, IB aims to develop students who are not just book-smart, but also thoughtful, engaged, and globally aware. Even the grading is approached differently. IB mixes final exams with essays, presentations, and projects stretched out over two years, so it rewards consistency, critical thinking, and time management instead of a single test score. Students take six IB classes over two years, three of which are at the more demanding Higher Level (HL). Strong HL exam scores can earn college credit, and completing all six classes plus the enrichment pieces leads to the IB Diploma, a globally recognized mark of academic excellence. Like AP, IB exams also come with fees, but costs vary since some schools include exam fees in tuition.
IB is a strong option for students applying to selective U.S. colleges and is especially useful for those considering studying abroad, since it’s recognized around the globe. Like other advanced programs, IB courses are weighted for GPA, so students get a transcript boost along with the rigor. The catch? The workload is heavy, thanks to all those extra enrichment pieces, so IB is best suited for organized, motivated kids who don’t panic at the thought of spending a weekend writing essays.
exams can earn the AP Capstone Diploma, a nationally recognized credential that highlights advanced thinking, writing, and research skills. If they only complete Seminar and Research, they still walk away with the AP Seminar and Research Certificate. Like other AP courses, both Seminar and Research come with official assessments, but they look a little different. In Seminar, students complete group projects, essays, and presentations throughout the year, then take a written exam in May. In Research, there’s no sit-down test. Instead, students submit a 4,000–5,000-word paper and present their findings. And just like any AP course, if a student scores a 3 or higher, many colleges will grant elective credit.
The final variation you’ll see is Capstone Project. Schools use the word “capstone” to signal a culminating experience. It’s meant to be the big finale, a single project that brings together everything a student has learned in high school. Instead of following the College Board framework, a Capstone Project might be a thesis, a science experiment, or a community initiative. It doesn’t come with national recognition, but it still shows independence, initiative, and follow-through, which colleges always like to see.
The common thread is independence. Whether it’s the AP path or a school’s homegrown version, Capstone is about tying everything together and proving a student can tackle a big, long-term project. It was actually created at the request of colleges, who wanted high school students to practice research, collaboration, and time management before stepping onto campus. That’s why colleges see it as more than just another line on a transcript. It shows skills that matter as much as test scores.
And the final option is AP Capstone. This one can feel a little confusing because schools advertise it in different ways. Sometimes you’ll see “AP Capstone Diploma,” other times just “AP Seminar” or “AP Research,” and occasionally a vague “Capstone Project.” They sound like the same thing, but they’re really variations on a theme.
AP Capstone is a program run by the College Board, the same organization behind the SAT and AP exams. It’s made up of two classes. In 10th or 11th grade, students take AP Seminar, where they dive into real-world issues and sharpen their analysis and presentation skills. Then comes AP Research, usually taken the following year, where students design and complete an independent project. Students who take both of those courses plus four additional AP
So where does that leave you? The truth is, there isn’t one perfect path. AP is flexible and widely recognized. IB is structured and globally respected. Dual enrollment is practical and steady. Capstone is all about independence. The real trick is matching the program to your student’s personality and goals. A motivated test-taker might love AP, while a student who prefers steady effort over a single high-stakes exam may do best with dual enrollment. It’s also worth keeping tradeoffs in mind. Earning college credit in high school can mean graduating from college sooner and saving on tuition, but it may also shorten the time available for internships, study abroad, or just enjoying the full college experience. On the other hand, since many colleges charge the same price for full-time students whether they take 12 credits or 18, finishing requirements early can give students extra room to take electives or explore new interests without paying more.
The reassuring bottom line? Even though it can feel as stressful as planning a wedding, the upside is that teens today have more options and opportunities than they used to. The key is being informed and making intentional choices about what fits your student best. That way, you really can have your cake and eat it too.
