As the summer season approaches us, all of us at R Media Publishing are excited for this years annual issue on summer camps and enrichment programs in South Florida. This issue was designed to help parents navigate the many innovative options available for enrichment and engagement. We hope that in this issue, you will find the right program to help your childr explore new interests, learn new skills, and create lifelong memories.

In this issue, we have brought together a diverse range of summer camps and programs, spanning everything from artistic

expression to outdoor exploration, and skillsspecific instruction to academic enrichment and STEM education. We have also included valuable tips and recommendations for selecting the best program for your child.

At SCF, we believe that summer camps and enrichment programs are invaluable opportunities for children to learn and grow, and to develop important life skills such as independence, collaboration, confidence, and leadership. We hope that this issue inspires you to explore the many exciting options we have in our community, and that you find the perfect program to help your child have a fun, fulfilling, and enriching summer.

THE LIFELONG SKILL OF MAKING FRIENDS

Friendship is an important life skill. When you think about some of the best times of your childhood, there is usually a fond memory of a friend who shared that experience with you. Considering the enormous role friendships play in an individual’s well-being, learning to make these precious connections should be a skill that is taught early on in childhood. Considering the importance of friendships in shaping a child’s personality, adults should make a concerted effort to promote and nurture these connections.

While academic success is essential, a child’s ability to form positive and meaningful relationships

is the most basic social-emotional skill with the highest potential to impact their overall well-being. Friendships also have a direct impact on learning. Happy students learn better, and the happiest students usually have strong relationships with their classmates. Friendships also teach children how to navigate positive and negative experiences, paving the way for the future-ready individual.

Unfortunately, as children grow, their interests evolve, their priorities change, and there is more to lose, both in reality and as they may perceive it (like a reputation). It is also no longer enough to share an interest in a favorite superhero.

A Child needs to learn how to be a good friend if theywant to have good friends. This means treating others with respect and acceptance for who they are as individuals. Finding, building, and maintaining fulfilling relationships takes A LOT of effort, but meaningful connections are well worth it, according to the longest study on human happiness.

The Harvard Study of Adult Development, one of the longest-running studies of human development, has been tracking participants’ lives since 1938. The research has revealed that close relationships are the most crucial factor in predicting health and happiness. The study also found that people who had meaningful relationships with family and friends in their younger years had greater overall well-being in adulthood. This finding underscores the importance of teaching children how to make and maintain friendships, as it can have a lasting effect on their overall well-being. So how can we teach children the art of building friendships in a meaningful way that will carry on into adulthood?

Direct Modeling

Parents play an essential role in the development of a child’s social-emotional skills, self-regulation skills, and social competence. Modeling is an evidence-based, effective method for teaching children how to regulate negative emotions, show sympathy, get involved in conversations, and apologize. This means that if a parent treats a child with warmth and respect, that child will be more likely to treat others with kindness and empathy. This is why the gentle parenting style can be so effective. There is real teaching potential in staying calm, kind, and connected.

Parents can also model good communication skills by constructively engaging with sympathy so children learn to understand and handle their feelings. Healthy communication models are essential in a child’s formative years as they build confidence and begin building relationships that require them to understand the emotions and perspectives of others. Practice modeling some of the most important social skills like taking turns, being flexible, active listening, patience, re -

specting boundaries and personal space, and making eye contact.

Teaching social skills can be difficult because people pick up these skills on their own. You can help develop these skills through play, which allows for teaching children how to take turns, how to follow directions, and how to lose gracefully. You can also read books or watch tv shows where you can pause and discuss good social skills or reflect on a character’s area of opportunity. Practicing social skills requires a good balance of one-on-one attention from caregivers and access to peers. The lessons should always end with positive praise and reinforcement.

Say Yes More Often

Our lives are shaped by the relationships we have. Building bonds with those around us through shared experiences deepens our connection and sense of belonging. Sharing these experiences also contributes to our emotional well-being, decreasing feelings of depression, anxiety, and loneliness. One way to foster these moments is by saying yes to invitations. Be an active participant in cultivating connection by being social. This creates an opportunity to meet new people or strengthen existing relationships. Schools, camps, clubs, and churches tend to offer consistent time for social interaction, but carving out time for other shared experiences like vacations, birthday parties, and playdates can also help foster deep bonds. Despite the many ways to stay connected to friends and family these days, digital connecting cannot deepen social connections and feelings of belonging like shared

experiences in person can. Intentionally showing up to these moments is a relational investment, and the value of shared experiences will bring incredible depth. Simply put, shared experiences are better experiences.

Facilitate Opportunities

There are many reasons why kids may have few friends. It is important to observe your child if they struggle with social situations. Consider their personality type and determine if they are just shy and beyond their comfort zone or if behavioral issues need to be addressed before they become social barriers. Your pediatrician can be a good resource when your child continues to have problems making friends, and it may be worth talking about it with them during their yearly visits.

Sometimes a child doesn’t have friends because they simply have not had enough opportunities to make them. One effective way parents can facilitate the process of making friends for their kids is by enrolling them in camps, clubs, or other enrichment programs. These activities provide a structured and unique environment for kids to interact and engage in fun and exciting activities with peers who share similar interests. These opportunities increase the chances of forming friendships, leading to more genuine connections where children can step out of their comfort zone, explore new things, and form lasting friendships. If your child struggles to come up with ideas on what they

like and dislike, you can offer suggestions to see if anything sounds appealing. You might try:

1. Team Sports and other skill-specific programs

2. Noncompetitive activities like art classes

3. Organizations and Clubs such as scouting organizations or volunteer programs

4. Academic Interest Clubs such as an after-school, student-led club

5. Day Camps and School’s out camps

6. Youth groups and social and educational programs such as AWANA

7. Special Programming and events at museums, gardens, aquariums, and public parks.

Teaching kids to make friends is crucial to their social and emotional development. Not only does it help them feel more connected and supported, but it also cultivates important life skills such as empathy, communication, and conflict resolution. We can help children feel more confident, capable, and resilient by fostering an environment that encourages positive social interactions. Whether through enrichment activities, social projects, or extracurricular programs, we can provide children with the tools and resources to build strong and meaningful relationships that will benefit them throughout their lives. Ultimately, investing in the social well-being of our children is an investment in their overall success and happiness. ▪

THE BENEFITS OF A HEAD START

Pre-college camps have a long and storied history. These camps are, in many ways, the ancestors of today’s summer camps. Initially created to enable high school students to explore their interests and passions before heading to college. Today, pre-college camps offer students a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience and dive deeper into academic subjects through these summer immersion programs. Through these residential and non-residential opportunities, students gain an understanding of college-level studies, university life, and career opportunities in a dynamic learning environment.

The first pre-college program in the United States was established in 1842 at Harvard College, inviting amateur students to attend lectures and discussions on various topics. Pre-College Camps have come a long way since their humble beginnings and have evolved to become more specialized and tailored to the individual student’s needs. In the past century, educators and institutions created more programs to help students of all backgrounds prepare for college-level courses. They range from

high school summer programs geared towards helping high-achieving students get an edge in the college admissions process to classes and seminars designed to develop the skills needed for college-level academic success. There is a unique focus on building research skills and passion for future careers in science, technology, engineering, math, humanities, and social sciences.

The Benefits of a Head Start

To help students excel in their post-secondary education, pre-college camps are a springboard that many look to to stay ahead of the curve. They can offer a wealth of benefits beyond college-level courses and activities. Here is what these introductory programs offer and how they can benefit high school students’ successful transition to college.

Explore. This academic experience provides a unique opportunity for students to step out of their comfort zones and test their passions while learning more about themselves. Students start by enrolling in a pre-college course of interest. Courses can range from one to six weeks and

involve a community of like-minded students who bring a deep and wide range of perspectives to learning and living together. Most classes are experiential and collaborative. While scholars and practitioners who are experts in their fields of study teach most of the courses, students learn primarily by engaging in discussions, labs, debates, projects, and simulations.

When classes are not in session, students may be required to participate in co-curricular and college preparedness activities, such as career and skills exploration lectures, college-readiness seminars, workshops on writing college essays and resumes, and informational sessions with admissions covering topics like applying or paying for college. Students can fill their downtime with various on-campus opportunities, such as exploring student clubs and organizations, participating in fitness classes and other sports activities, and connecting with other students at movie screenings, comedy shows, and trivia or game nights. Students may also take time to rest and study in residence halls. On weekends, students can participate in community service projects or take chaperoned group excursions off campus to explore the area’s arts, culture, natural history, and local sports. These immersive on-and-off-campus experiences allow students to truly explore university resources, embrace college life, and learn from distinguished faculty and experts, all under high health, safety, and success standards.

Preparedness. Pre-college camp is an invaluable experience for high schoolers, helping them better understand their goals to make more informed decisions about their future. These intensive programs provide an experiential learning opportunity that develops hard and soft skills. Students explore a potential career or field of study by engaging in hands-on activities, seminars, and lectures that help strengthen their competencies, abilities, and expertise in an area of interest. They get a chance to understand the rigors of college academics and learn to develop strategies for succeeding in their senior year, such as learning new study techniques and managing their time, stress, and workload. This can also help prepare them for advanced placement and dual enrollment courses during high school.

Pre-College Camps also provide students with valuable tools such as interpersonal and communication skills, leadership development, and problem-solving skills. Students learn how to take responsibility for their work, how to embrace and respect the opinions of others (mainly when they differ), and understand and meet professors’ expectations. Upon completion, they are better prepared to take advantage of the challenges and opportunities they will face in college and the future.

Connect. One of the less obvious benefits of attending a pre-college camp is the connections children make. Through these programs, students gain valuable networking opportunities, meet other incoming students from all over the world, and establish relationships with potential professors or em-

ployers. This network can be beneficial when it comes to making the transition into college. They can also influence them to make more informed decisions and encourage personal goal development to help them succeed.

A map for senior year. Senior year of high school is often considered one of the most challenging due to the immense pressure to perform. As seniors prepare to take the next step in life, they are expected to juggle college applications, increased workload and expectations, and extracurricular activities. They feel excited and relieved to finish high school but sad to leave behind their friends and familiar environments. They will feel anxious about the future yet filled with anticipation. Often considered the most crucial year for college applications, they will also feel confused and overwhelmed. Most students and parents have limited knowledge of the college application process, and many are unaware of the available financial aid and scholarship opportunities. During pre-college camps, universities offer tools to successfully navigate the college admissions process. They carve college readiness activities like seminars, lectures, and workshops into daily schedules to empower students to make informed decisions about their future. These curated activities give students insight into all the factors that come together to create a college experience.

These support sessions aim to help high school students understand and prioritize what to look for and what to expect from college, articulate the personal values that will guide their decisions, and develop strategies that contribute to their success in college and professional pathways. Students leave ready to jump into the college admissions and application process with the tools they need to compete.

Advantages

Most programs do not offer college credits, but upon successful participation, students receive a Certificate of Participation and Evaluations written by their instructors. The evaluation from a professor can be invaluable as instructors comment candidly and constructively on students’ performance, effort, participation, progress, and proficiency in their assignments. This feedback can motivate students and increase their confidence as they identify their strengths, weaknesses, and improvement areas.

Successful completion requires attending, participating, and completing assignments. Students who complete courses where credits are not offered receive a certificate of participation as recognition for their hard work. Certificates are beneficial for college admissions and scholarship opportunities as they are physical representations of a student’s ability to succeed in a rigorous college course. It is also a great way to show potential schools that students are motivated, dedicated, and willing to put in extra effort and initiative to further their education. While a certificate of completion will not guarantee acceptance, it can give students an edge over their peers during college admissions.

These are all benefits of an exploratory program designed to challenge and engage students in a dynamic and supportive environment--without the pressure of formal grades. They are designed for high school students who are self-motivated and ready to study in a program with high academic rigor.

Finding a pre-college camp

Finding the right pre-college camp does not have to be complicated. One should decide what their child can gain from a pre-college camp experience. Is the goal to build specific skills or gain more independence for the student? Knowing what they want from this experience will also help narrow the options. Research the colleges under consideration to ensure that their programs and majors align with one’s academic interests. Consider the cost and location of the camp and the opportunities the area has to offer. The cost of pre-college camp can range from a few hundred dollars to several thousand, depending on the program and the location. While the most immersive experiences happen in residential programs, colleges offer remote and commuter programs, which make them more accessible. Lastly, make sure that there is an expansive network of support services for students, such as counseling, academic development, career services, and student health and wellness services.

Next Steps

Not all pre-college camps have minimum GPA requirements, but they all are selective. They are all looking for academically exceptional students who are leaders in their schools, active in their community, and eager to contribute original ideas. Students must submit application materials that establish they have the necessary background, ability, motivation, and maturity to function at the level of college students. Here is a quick enrollment guide to getting started.

1. Eligibility. Ensure your child meets all age/grade requirements and minimum grade point averages. This includes vaccination requirements and exemptions.

2. Select Program and Courses. Is your child applying for the residential, commuter, or remote programs? Is the course of interest available in the remote program? Are there any conflicts with the dates or times of each session? Choose your program thoughtfully.

3. Deadlines. While most institutions will review applications as soon as all the materials are received (rolling basis), it is essential to note application deadlines. Students should apply as early as possible for three reasons: priority in course selection, financial aid/scholarship deadlines courses tend to fill up quickly.

4. Determine Costs. Consider upfront costs such as application fees and tuition, as well as optional fees for optional excursions and other personal expenses. Most programs include the cost of textbooks, lab fees, meal plans, doctor visits, activities, and fitness centers, but you should refer to the specific school and program as they can vary.

5. Gather Application Documents. Complete the personal statement and essay. Request high school transcript(s) and determine whom you will ask for a recommendation letter(s). Make sure to give them as much advance notice as possible and straightforward expectations.

6. Review and submit the application. Ensure all required materials are uploaded and all documents requiring signatures have been completed. Pay the fees and submit! Note: Parents, while it is incredibly noble of you to want to enroll your child in a pre-college camp, it is important to note that the application must ONLY be completed and submitted by prospective students.

7. Waiting for an admissions decision. Programs tell you how long it will take to review your application and make a decision. During this time, make sure to check the status of the application in case any materials need to be resubmitted. The admissions office communicates primarily with the student, and an email will notify them once a decision has been reached.

8. Confirm Enrollment. Once you receive an acceptance notification, you must submit the enrollment forms and pay the non-refundable deposit. The deposit is applied towards the program tuition cost. Upon acceptance, you may be asked to submit your immunization records or other forms.

9. Register for classes. Space in courses is limited. Ensure your student regularly checks their email for information about registration and the next steps. If registration has yet to be opened, this is a good time for your student to familiarize themselves with using the student portal, registering for a course, checking enrollment numbers, and completing the course registration process. This is also a good time to double-check and make sure no outstanding bills or documents are pending that may keep them from registering for their desired course.

10. Dealing with Rejection. Talk about the possibility of rejection letters beforehand. One of the most important things to remember is that rejections at highly selective programs are a normal part of the process. Please remind your child that programs aim to create balance and that a rejection letter is not a judgment on their abilities or academic strengths. When they are ready, invest energy into getting excited about other opportunities and programs.

Pre-college programs may have a variety of goals and objectives. Some may offer a comprehensive overview of the college experience, while others may focus on specific areas, such as math, science, or the humanities. In either case, the goal is to provide students with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to succeed in college. They are wonderful opportunities to challenge your child with new perspectives on how they work, learn, and live. ▪

The Real Food Academy is a unique place where your child will not only make friends and have fun but will be immersed in real foods and nutritional knowledge. Your child will leave our kitchen with the confidence and nutritional awareness that will positively influence their eating habits for life. This can be very difficult, if not impossible, for

parents to do on their own. Here is why we have succeeded where many have failed in a very important task.

First and foremost, it is safe to say that there is nothing more important to parents than the health of their children. That is a fact. It is also a fact that nothing has a greater impact on your child’s health than the food they eat. When they make the right food choices (what we call “real food” at The Real Food Academy) they will feel better, sleep better, think better, look better and ultimately reduce the chances of serious illnesses. As a parent, one of the most important things you can do is instill healthy eating habits while they are young. We help cultivate this with an appreciation for real ingredients and a fun way of exposing them to new foods. Studies have shown that children that learn to prepare their own food have a tendency to skip less healthy or processed foods. By enrolling your child at the Real Food Academy, you open the door to a whole new world of nutrition education. Our kitchens are the ultimate learning labs where we engage all of their senses daily. Your child will be taught food safety and cooking techniques that will improve their math, science, literacy, and fine motor skills. Nutrition education may be incomplete without the hands-on approach and experiential learning we strive to provide at the Real Food Academy.

At The Real Food Academy’s culinary camp, your child will be surrounded by other children who are his or her age. This sets the stage for a powerful phenomenon we have witnessed over the years—positive peer pressure! We all share the need to connect and kids are no different. By working together and observing each other, we have seen kids share new experiences, adopt healthy habits and attitudes, and increase

their self-confidence. We see this when they get to experience the tangible results of their work. Most kids proudly exclaim, “yummy, this tastes great”! Even the pickiest eaters will open their minds, challenge their palettes, and join in with, “yeah, this IS yummy”! We foster this type of positive influence at our camps because we know kids are more vulnerable to the influence and opinions of their peers. This is almost impossible to achieve at home.

Each week, under the supervision and direction of a trained chef, your child will assemble dozens of dishes from start to finish. They will have an opportunity to showcase their creativity and work with other young chefs as they learn to work as a team. Your child will create meals that look great, taste great, and more importantly, are made from the healthiest, nutrient-dense ingredients. The immediate gratification that kids experience helps boost their self-esteem and confidence. Of course, eating their creation is the best part! Kids love to show off their hard work and accomplishments. When you pick up your child each afternoon, expect them to run toward you, food in hand, beaming with pride as they share their creations with you.
