HOW TRADITIONAL SUMMER CAMPS ARE EMBRACING STEM INTEGRATION

In the world of summer activities, camps are often seen as more than just places to keep children occupied. Despite some common misconceptions, these summer escapes boast a wealth of diverse programs catering to a wide range of interests and abilities. Far from being simple childcare centers, summer camps provide dynamic environments for exploration, learning, and skill development. For ages, they’ve been celebrated as playgrounds for adventure, exploration, and personal growth—bringing along a wonderful blend of creativity, enjoyment, and companionship. Most importantly, they offer unique opportunities as learning hubs, with STEM education playing a bigger part in activities at camps. In today’s dynamic landscape, proficiency

in science, technology, engineering, and math is becoming increasingly important as they all play a role in preparing children for the future. Through exploring the changes taking place at traditional camps, it becomes clear how integrating STEM concepts into exciting activities enhances the summer experience and mitigates summer learning loss.

Technology’s increasing role in education gained significant momentum in the late 20th century, marking a turning point in a process that’s been occurring for several decades. Technology has revolutionized how learning is approached and dramatically transformed how children learn and develop personally.

As society continues to embrace the digital era, camps are adopting these advancements to enhance experiences and engage campers more intentionally. One noticeable shift in summer programs is the inclusion of STEM education into their activities and program offerings, marking a transition from their original recreational focus to now being more educational. One response to this shift was the emergence of specialized camps that exclusively focus on STEM disciplines, offering an immersive environment and deeper exploration of these subjects for those with specific interests seeking targeted learning opportunities. Another response was the integration of STEM concepts in traditional summer camp activities. This experiential approach offers campers opportunities to explore new interests through hands-on activities in a more informal setting. Traditional camps now introduce campers to coding, marine science, artificial intelligence, game design, medicine, and forensics, blending classic camp fun with educational experiences. Below are four strategies camps are using to promote STEM education at traditional day camps.

STEM-themed Sessions or Tracks

Some summer camps offer specific STEM-themed sessions or tracks. These encompass a wide range of engaging fields such as robotics, coding, astronomy, physics experiments, and engineering challenges. Campers who opt for these sessions can immerse themselves in a range of STEM activities and projects. This focused approach allows campers to dive deep into their areas of interest and develop a strong foundation in STEM subjects.

Integration into Existing Activities

Many traditional summer camps integrate STEM into their existing activities. For example, during arts and crafts sessions, campers may work on projects that incorporate elements of engineering and design. Similarly, during outdoor activities, they may learn about environmental science and conservation. By seamlessly blending STEM into

existing activities, campers get to experience the best of both worlds.

Field Trips and Excursions

Some summer camps organize field trips and excursions that incorporate STEM-related destinations. For example, campers may visit science museums, nature reserves, or technology companies. These outings provide campers with real-world examples of STEM applications and inspire their curiosity and interest. By seamlessly integrating STEM activities into traditional summer camp programs, camps provide campers with the chance to explore and interact with STEM subjects in an enjoyable and immersive way.

STEM Outdoor Activities

Some camps integrate STEM with outdoor experiences, merging traditional camp activities with scientific exploration. For example, campers can dive into the local ecosystem, perform water quality testing, or engage in astronomy studies. This approach seamlessly incorporates STEM into the natural environment, fostering experiential learning and linking science to the surrounding world.

STEM activities at traditional day camps are not just igniting curiosity but also promoting diversity and inclusivity. By offering activities that are as diverse as the campers themselves, camps are breaking down barriers of gender and diversity and contributing to a more inclusive and equitable future.

Through these experiences, campers of all backgrounds are free to explore, engage, and excel in the exciting world of STEM, providing equal opportunities for both boys and girls and inspiring a new generation of scientists, engineers, and mathematicians. Let’s explore a few examples of how day camps incorporate STEM activities to enrich traditional programming.

Robotics and Engineering

Campers are given dedicated time to design, build, and program robots using LEGO Mindstorms or other robotics kits. Some camps also leverage their natural surroundings to inspire engineering projects where campers design and build structures using natural materials. They learn about mechanical engineering, coding, and solving problems sustainably while working on different challenges and projects using design principles.

egg drop challenge that explores physics concepts such as force and impact.

Environmental Science and Sustainability Campers engage in activities focused on environmental science and sustainability. They learn about environmental challenges, innovate sustainable solutions, and develop a deep understanding of preserving and protecting our planet. To foster environmental awareness and creativity, they may participate in projects like creating “upcycled” sculptures, where they make unique sculptures by recycling materials like cardboard, plastic bottles, and old CDs, teaching them about recycling and combining elements of art, engineering, and sustainability. They may also participate in nature walks and scavenger hunts that require observational skills and biodiversity awareness as they learn to identify and document various plant and animal species.

Space Exploration

Some summer camps offer space-themed activities, allowing campers to explore the wonders of the universe. They may learn about planets, build model rockets, or even participate in projects such as building solar ovens. These activities incorporate physics, aerodynamics, and solar energy concepts while teaching campers about astronomy, astrophysics, environmental science, planetary science, and so much more.

Incorporating STEM into traditional summer camps is a significant advancement that combines exploration, education, and personal growth. So far this approach has proved to be a great success, sparking campers’ passions, boosting confidence and academic performance, and creating lifelong

friendships and networks. As the demand for STEM professionals continues to grow, cultivating a passion for science and technology is crucial, and STEM-integrated summer camps are helping to prepare the next generation of innovators and leaders. Whether they build robots, conduct experiments, or explore the mysteries of our universe, campers are developing skills, nurturing their curiosity, and building a foundation for future success. By providing campers with hands-on learning experiences, critical thinking skills, and exposure to STEM fields, summer camps are poised to play a pivotal role in the future of educating well-rounded individuals—all while creating an unforgettable and enriching experience of a lifetime. 

SUMMER EXPERIENCES

For many families, camp holds a special place as a cherished tradition, whether it’s for extra skill development or enjoying the outdoors with friends. Yet, in households where both parents work, it’s often a necessary expense that can be quite costly. Summer camps and enrichment programs offer a unique opportunity for children to enhance their skills, explore new interests, and grow personally and academically. These experiences, such

as summer day camps, academic programs, and sports academies, provide a structured environment where children can learn, develop friendships, and gain independence. While some may view these experiences as mere recreational activities, research has shown that they can have a significant impact on a child’s overall development. According to a study published in the Journal of Youth and Adolescence, participation in specialized summer programs

18 | SCF

can lead to improved academic performance, increased self-confidence, and enhanced social skills. If your dream is to give your child an unforgettable summer experience but you are worried about the cost, you are not alone.

Although these experiences may come with a price tag, recognizing their long-term benefits in children’s development shifts them from expenses into invaluable investments. With thoughtful planning and the right approach, you can ensure that your child enjoys the most enriching experience this summer.

Before we talk about strategies, it’s important to understand the different types of specialized summer experiences available and their associated costs. Popular options include traditional day camps and specialty camps such as academic enrichment programs, arts and music camps, or sports camps. The expenses associated with summer learning experiences can fluctuate significantly based on factors like location, meal options, transportation services, before or after-care requirements, potential additional costs for day trips, available facilities and amenities, and the distinctiveness of the program offerings. According to the ACA, the average cost per day for one person attending day camps, where day camp makes up at least half of their activities, is $178.49. Specialty camps usually begin at approximately $270 per week. They provide specialized instruction in specific interests like STEM, soccer, or art. These camps typically run for one to three weeks, offering tailored experiences or focusing on singular specialties for deeper immersion. For a sleep-away camp, families typically budget between $2,175 to $2,775 for a two-week camp session, based on the 2022 ACA statistics, with the average daily expense being approximately $448.53. It’s essential to research and compare different programs to find the one that best suits your child’s interests and your family’s budget.

If you’re a parent looking for ways to pay for your child’s summer camp, it’s good to know that many camps have scholarships available. These scholarships typically fall into two categories:

full scholarships and partial scholarships. Full scholarships usually cover the entire cost of camp, excluding a registration fee which typically starts around $50. Partial scholarships cover a portion of the camp cost, with the amount varying based on financial need. Some campers may be eligible for multiple partial scholarships, potentially increasing the total coverage. It’s worth noting that while financial need is a key consideration, the primary requirement for scholarship selection is the camper’s genuine interest in attending camp.

SCF | 19

Many organizations, schools, and foundations offer financial assistance to deserving students who demonstrate talent, academic achievement, or financial need. Start by researching for financial aid that specifically caters to the type of summer experience your child is interested in. Look for eligibility criteria, application deadlines, and any rules and requirements. You can also find assistance through various organizations such as churches, community centers, non-profit foundations, and local government programs. Speaking of government programs, it’s a good idea to check if the camp offers income-based subsidy programs like Title XX. Additionally, there are options like Dependent Care Flexible Spending Accounts, which let you get reimbursed before taxes for child care or dependent care expenses needed for work or school. Some daycare costs, including provider transportation, might qualify as eligible expenses paid with pretax dollars. Also, the IRS offers a Child and

Dependent Care Tax Credit of up to $6,000 for two or more dependents (up to $3,000 for one dependent), that applies to qualifying day camp costs. The amount of the credit is based on your adjusted gross income and applies only to your federal taxes. You can find more information about these options on websites like FSA Feds (fsafeds.com) and the IRS website (irs.gov). To secure financial aid, it’s important to apply early. Funding is often limited, and scholarships are in high demand, so don’t wait. Also, remember to ask about discounts, as not all financial assistance is publicly advertised.

Moving to enrollment, camps often provide various discounts to increase accessibility. These discounts can include savings for early registration, signing up for the full season, referral bonuses, half-day options, and enrolling multiple family members. Families who register early might also benefit from structured payment plans spread throughout the year, helping to manage camp costs. You may also be able to get a discount for paying the full amount upfront or paying with a check instead of a credit card. Camps may even offer last-minute discounts to fill empty spots. “Camperships,” which are partial or total scholarships and financial aid programs. As part of their partnership or promotional programs, some camps may also offer discounts to affiliate members. Lastly, make the most of programs offered by institutions where you’re already a member or enrolled in school. These institutions often offer discounts or special perks, such as reduced fees and priority registration, for members and registered families, making it a convenient and affordable choice. In summary, it’s crucial to explore all these opportunities and avoid assuming that income automatically disqualifies your family. Additionally, reach out to camps early to discuss payment options and

If your child is passionate about a specific summer activity, it’s smart to plan financially. Start saving early and look for ways to cut back on expenses, like canceling unnecessary

work, managing money, and setting goals.

It’s clear that the value of summer experiences for your child goes beyond simply the price tag. It is an investment in their personal growth, future opportunities, and overall well-being. These experiences provide invaluable opportunities for

unforgettable experiences this summer. With careful planning, you can implement savings strategies, explore scholarships and discounts, and consider alternative fundraising methods to create memories that will last a lifetime and give your child the summer experience they deserve. ▪
