a bout the s aints

The saints serve as Quasimodo’s silent companions and guiding voices. Carved in stone yet alive in his imagination, they embody his faith, his loneliness, and his longing for connection. Acting as confidants, protectors, and even a chorus of conscience, the saints bridge the sacred and the human—reminding us of the power of belief, the need for hope, and the resilience of the spirit even in the darkest of places.

SAINT APHRODISIUS

A Christian tradition states that he was a prefect or high priest who sheltered the Holy Family at Hermopolis when they fled into Egypt. Aphrodisius learned of the miracles of Jesus from Alexandrian Jews returning from a pilgrimage in Jerusalem. According to Christian legend, Aphrodisius went to Palestine to meet Jesus and became one of his disciples. The legend continues that Aphrodisius arrived at Béziers mounted on a camel and became a hermit in a cave near the city, where he lived before becoming a bishop. Local traditions assign Aphrodisius as the first Bishop of Béziers and state that he was decapitated by a group of pagans, along with his companions, on the street now known as Place Saint-Cyr, the site of a Roman circus used for gladiators' fights. Aphrodisius was executed by beheading. The head was kicked into a well, but the water gushed out and the decapitated Aphrodisius picked up his own head, and carried it through the city. Townspeople spilt snails on the road and Aphrodisius stepped on them without breaking one. Several stonemasons began to mock him, calling him a madman. They were miraculously punished by being turned into stones (visitors still point out their seven stone heads on the Rue des Têtes, "the street of the heads"). Aphrodisius left his head at the cave that he had previously occupied. This was a spot on which later stood a chapel dedicated to Saint Peter, and later a basilica named after Aphrodisius. According to the story, after the death of his master, the camel was taken care of by a compassionate family of potters. When Aphrodisius was recognized as a saint, the city's leaders considered it an honour to take charge of all the expenses associated with the animal's maintenance. They offered it a house at the beginning of a street and this road, after the camel's death, took the name of "rue du Chameau" ("Camel Street"). This is considered the origin of the local "fêtes de Caritach" (feasts of charity).

ECCLESIA & SYNAGOGA

Ecclesia and Synagoga, meaning "Church and Synagogue," are a pair of figures personifying the Church and the Jewish synagogue, that is to say Judaism, found in medieval Christian art. They often appear sculpted as large figures on either side of a church portal, as in the most famous examples, those at Strasbourg Cathedral. They may also be found standing on either side of the cross in scenes of the Crucifixion, especially in Romanesque art. The two female figures are usually young and attractive; Ecclesia is generally adorned with a crown, chalice and cross-topped staff, looking confidently forward. In contrast, Synagoga is blindfolded and drooping, carrying a broken lance (possibly an allusion to the Holy Lance that stabbed Christ) and the Tablets of the Law or Torah scrolls that may even be slipping from her hand.

SAINT GENEVIEVE

Genevieve was a consecrated virgin, and is one of the two patron saints of Paris in the Catholic Church and Eastern Orthodox Church. Recognized for her religious devotion at a young age, she dedicated herself to a virginal life. Miracles and healings began to happen around her early on and she became known for changing the weather. She moved from Nanterre, her hometown, to Paris, after her parents died and became known for her piety, healings, and miracles, although the residents of Paris resented her and would have killed her if not for interventions. Her prayers saved Paris from being destroyed by the Huns under Attila; her organisation of the city's women was called a "prayer marathon" and Genevieve's "most famous feat." She was involved in two major construction projects in Paris, a basilica in the honour of Saint Denis of Paris in 475 AD and the Basilica of the Holy Apostles, dedicated to Saint Peter and Saint Paul. Genevieve performed miracles both before and after her death. She was "a favorite of both the humblest residents and of the Bourbon family, and was

equally venerated by Erasmus and revolutionary fishwives" and was considered "a cultural symbol” who was publicly invoked during emergencies related to the needs and expectations of the residents of Paris 153 times between 885 AD and October 1791. Devotion to her remained popular throughout the history of Paris.

JEANNE D’ARC

Joan of Arc is a patron saint of France, honored as a defender of the French nation for her role in the siege of Orléans and her insistence on the coronation of Charles VII of France during the Hundred Years' War. Claiming to be acting under divine guidance, she became a military leader who transcended gender roles and gained recognition as a savior of France. Joan was born to a propertied peasant family. In 1428, she requested to be taken to Charles VII, who, convinced of her devotion and purity, sent Joan, who was about 17 years old, to Orléans as part of a relief army. She arrived at the city wielding her banner and bringing hope to the demoralized French army. Nine days after her arrival, the English abandoned the siege. Joan encouraged the French to aggressively pursue the English, which culminated in another decisive victory, opening the way for the French army to advance unopposed, and Charles was crowned as the king of France with Joan at his side. These victories boosted French morale, paving the way for their final triumph in the Hundred Years' War several decades later. After Charles's coronation, Joan participated in two unsuccessful sieges of Paris, and her role in these defeats reduced the court's faith in her. She was captured by Burgundian troops, and after trying unsuccessfully to escape, she was handed to the English and put on trial on accusations of heresy, which included blaspheming by wearing men's clothes, acting upon visions that were demonic, and refusing to submit her words and deeds to the judgment of the church. She was declared guilty and burned at the stake on 30 May 1431 at around the age of nineteen. In 1456, an inquisitorial court reinvestigated Joan's trial and overturned the verdict, declaring that it was tainted by deceit and procedural errors. Joan has been described as an obedient member of the Catholic Church, an early feminist, and a symbol of freedom and independence. She is popularly revered as a martyr. After the French Revolution, she became a national symbol of France. In 1920, Joan of Arc was canonized by Pope Benedict XV and, two years later, was declared one of the patron saints of France. She is portrayed in numerous cultural works, including literature, music, paintings, sculptures, and theater.

SAINT STEPHEN

Stephen is traditionally venerated as the protomartyr or first martyr of Christianity. According to the Acts of the Apostles, he was a deacon in the early church at Jerusalem who angered members of various synagogues by his teachings. Accused of blasphemy at his trial, he made a speech denouncing the Jewish authorities who were sitting in judgment on him and was then stoned to death. Saul of Tarsus, a Pharisee and Roman citizen who would later become an apostle, participated in Stephen's execution. The only source for information about Stephen is the New Testament Book of the Acts of the Apostles. Stephen is mentioned as one of the Greek-speaking Hellenistic Jews selected to administer the daily charitable distribution of food to the Greek-speaking widows. The Catholic, Anglican, Oriental Orthodox, Eastern Orthodox, and Lutheran churches and the Church of the East view Stephen as a saint. Artistic representations often show Stephen with a crown symbolising martyrdom, three stones, martyr's palm frond, censer, and often holding a miniature church building. Stephen is often shown as a young, beardless man with a tonsure, wearing a deacon's vestments.

DENIS OF PARIS

Denis of Paris was a 3rd-century Christian martyr and saint. According to his hagiographies, he was bishop of Paris in the third century and, together with his companions Rusticus and Eleutherius, was martyred for his faith by decapitation, suffering under the persecution of the emperor Decius shortly after AD 250. Denis is the most famous cephalophore in Christian history, with a popular story claiming that the decapitated bishop picked up his head and walked several miles while preaching a sermon on repentance. He is venerated in the Catholic Church as a patron saint of both France and Paris and is one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers. A chapel was raised at the site of his burial by a local Christian woman; it was later expanded into an abbey and basilica, around which grew up the French city of Saint-Denis, now a suburb of Paris.

Shows at the SCERA are a family affair. This is Aaron's second role in a show at SCERA, having played the pirate captain Braidbeard in How I Became A Pirate in the fall of 2021, where he coincidentally got to share the stage with another son. When he isn't trying to learn Gypsy dance routines and Latin choral numbers, Aaron continues to study voice, fix Volkswagens, and enjoy life. GABRIEL MILDENSTEIN

Round 3, baby!). She graduated from Snow College and Utah Valley University with degrees in Dance Performance and Theatre Arts, and has since kept up her training by travelling all over the country participating in workshops and taking classes whenever she can. She is happy to be back doing her fifth show at SCERA.

Previous work here includes Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (2021), The Music Man (2020), Elf The Musical (2019), and The Happy Elf (2016). She would like to send a personal shoutout and say thank you to her husband for supporting her and their beautiful new baby, even after she said, "I'm going to take a whole year off from doing shows once she's born"...and then absolutely did not do that.
