The month of June marks the beginning of the annual summer vacation craze. While many people will depart for their muchawaited summer holidays, trains, airplanes and the motorways will fill up rather quickly. Did you know that in Germany, the annual summer holidays start on different dates, depending on which federal state you live in? So, why is that? Besides pedagogical reasons, the main reason for this is that the authorities want to prevent mega traffic jams. If everyone would embark on their big holiday on the same date, all motorways would become chaotic. Furthermore, hotels, camping sites, holiday flats and airports wouldn’t be able to satisfy this huge demand. Makes sense, right? To get you inspired for your big annual holiday, we have handpicked some great destinations to explore. For instance, like no other city in Switzerland, Basel radiates wealth, luxury and, of course, art. As the world’s most prestigious art fair, the Art Basel, is staged once more in June, it’s time for our writer Wibke Carter to explore the vibrant metropolis for Discover Germany, Austria & Switzerland. For the more adventurous travellers out there, we also take a look at camping highlights, some great hotel breaks, fun things to do throughout the holidays with the entire family and much, much more. In this month’s cover story we focus on Hamburg as one of Europe’s leading hydrogen regions. Hydrogen is touted as the future fuel of the EU and the green hydrogen industry hopes to deliver carbon-neutral energy that will power airplanes, domestic heating and much more. In Germany’s second largest city of Hamburg, research into hydrogen is in full swing as the region hopes to set up a fully-operating hydrogen industry by 2035. And, on top of all these exciting reads, we feature an interview with Tanja Dorn, founder of the artist agency Dorn Music. Have a great holiday! Sit back, relax and thanks for reading.
