In this challenging restaurant world and the year of the Great Resignation, companies are losing their people to other industries and other companies. Many Multi Unit Managers have told their superiors they are at the point of burnout doing the jobs of two to three colleagues, as their peers walk out the door.

If current business owners don’t learn to lead with heart and begin to understand what motivates people, more turnover occurs. And we know the high cost of that turnover. Replacing a MUM is easily over $20,000. Bo Czyz has a proven track record of developing and supporting people that move up the ladder. During his eight DVP years at Papa Johns, seven of his team members went onto bigger careers. His coaching tree got even larger in his five years as Leadership and Development Director at PJI. Along with the GO LEFT program, Bo lead Calling Forward Potential classes, First Time Manager programs, and Seven Stages of Effective Multi Unit Leaders Retention and promotional readiness were at an all time high. No longer were we promoting untested managers, but we were showing them and preparing them for their next role.

We were proactive in our development approach; we wrote the narrative when it comes to readiness. We did not wait for things to happen to us, we went out and planned out our future. Bo specialized in performance management and wrote countless development plans for team members. Over 200+ folks went through some sort of classroom guidance during Bo’s time. Over half of them got promoted during that time to positions higher in responsibility. Bo gave them a sense of purpose and a road map of how to get there and stay there for a long time.

Leaders need to understand what motivates their teammates and it’s not the same for everyone. They don’t know what they don’t know and that’s where the people investment really pays off. They get a sense of purpose; they learn how to engage their team and get more out of them. They learn how to make work more interesting, not just telling folks to work harder.
