Our association’s annual convention and trade show have become such an important part of “who we are” that I am dedicating my president’s letter (page) to something I believe to be more important at this tme -- a message from our Convention Chairman, Joel Reese. I hope you will make every effort to join us this year for the convention and trade show. The goal of the event each year is “to make our members proud to be member.” This is your association, and this is your meeting. Be there! Lee Boylston, SCAHACC President It is a well known fact that the members and supporters of the SCAHACC are the “Best of the Best.” You are the “champions” of the heating and a/c industry in our state! You have worked hard and you did what you had to do to reach the highest level of HVAC industry performance! In honor of this commitment and achievement, we are taking you - our members and supporters - to the place where you belong…the place where only the “champions” play…the place where only the “Best of the Best” meet! We’re taking you to the “Superbowl”!!! That’s right! SCAHACC is going to the Superbowl for our 2014 Convention and Trade Show! Band in the USA - “20 Ride”! What a night! HVAC stuff everywhere! HVAC people everywhere! And a special concert right on the Trade Show floor. For HVAC folks – it just doesn’t get any better than this! On Superbowl Saturday, we’ll have our usual great breakfast/business session complete with our own champion keynote speaker – Retired General and SEC Chief Referee Dick Burleson. Gen. Burleson is the vice president of Neel Schaffer, one of the leading engineering and aviation firms in the United States. Burleson graduated from Georgia Tech with a Civil Engineering degree. He also rose to the rank of Major General in the Army Reserves, graduated from the Army War College and was Commanding General of the largest Army Reserve Command in the World. Burleson was also a football official in the Southeastern Conference for 25 years. He served as Chief Referee and President of the SEC and wrote a book about his experience as a referee called “You Better Be Right!” We can’t wait to hear him tell us about his experiences – both on and off the field - and share his thoughts on business, leadership, patriotism and winning with us. The Trade Show will open again for some more opportunity to see more and continue to learn with our vendors. From there, we will all go the SCAHACC “RED ZONE”! This is where the best technicians in the state compete to see who is the “Best of the Best! Who will be the 2014 Champion? Could it be one of your techs? And, for those attendees that are a little more interested in cuisine than load calculation, we have Master Chef’s own Jessie Lysiak coming in to show us how she prepares food for well to do yachting crowd! Jessie is a Southern girl from Georgia that comes from a family that loved to cook and travel. After graduating from North Georgia College and State University she moved to south Florida to pursue a job on a yacht. After 5 years of island hopping with the rich and famous, she got a phone call from Fox Network saying they heard about her cooking and yachting lifestyle and would like for her to audition to be on the # 1 cooking show...MasterChef. She was chosen to compete along with over 30,000 others. She made it all the way to the top 3 and was on all 23 episodes of Gordon Ramsay’s famed TV show. We’ve got her and what a special event this will be! And for our Superbowl Grand Finale Saturday night, we’re bringing in the Best of the Best! We’ll have our own Awards and Recognitions and then our favorites straight from the Legends Tour! Jessie Lysiak is a good ole Southern girl from Georgia who comes from a family that loves to cook. SCAHACC has a new legislative coach Meet Philip Willis My name is Philip Willis and I wanted to take this opportunity to briefly introduce myself. Having recently been selected to represent SCAHAAC’s governmental interests for the 2014 session, I look forward to assisting the Association with all of it’s legislative concerns. Some of you may recognize my name from my recent work on your behalf as part of the Palmetto Public Affairs (PPA) team. It is my intention to continue the level of responsiveness PPA provided and hopefully improve upon it. Prior to, I held numerous jobs in state government including State Budget Director for the House Ways and Means Committee and working on budget and policy issues in the administration of Governor Carroll Campbell. I first came to South Carolina in 1985 when I was stationed here for my shore duty from the U.S. Navy. Before joining the Navy in 1979, I worked in the heating and air conditioning field. Both my undergraduate and master’s degree are from the University of SC, so you know where my loyalties lie during the Carolina-Clemson game. It is with great pleasure and anticipation of a prosperous relationship that I accepted the opportunity to represent the Association. Happy New Year.

Duct Happy New Year! I hope that 2014 will be a banner year for all of us that work in the heating and cooling field. With that in mind, have you had an inspector ask about duct leakage on a system you have recently installed? Did that catch you off guard? Since 2013, with the adoption of the 2009 IECC, it has been required for South Carolina. You must verify your ducts to meet the minimum leakage rates.

You have some options. You can get a verifier to check behind you. Typically this is a HERS rater or BPI certified building auditor. Or why not get your own duct blaster? Here you need a new tool. A duck blaster you say? For some, the thoughts of a 12 gauge shotgun may come to mind. Living in South Carolina using a shotgun may come more natural than a duct blaster. This new tool can be a money maker for some however. It will definitely “up” your end game as far as the quality of your duct work.

If you decide to let someone else do the verifying, please consider this, they only verify! Pass or fail. If the duct system fails, you have to find and fix the leaks. Then you have to pay them again to re-verify or recheck your ducts. This can be very frustration. The learning curve will definitely be more costly than if you have a duct blaster on hand and you are trained on how to use it. Better yet, test old duct systems prior to replacing them. This way the customer knows how much their old duct system was costing them. Think of the ways you could offer this to your customers. If you are doing new homes, the builder expects you to install ducts that are code compliant, right? Add some money to your quote as many new construction contractors don’t have the skill to do this verifying. Show the builder you can save him money. To meet this new challenge SCAHACC has partnered with the South Carolina Energy Office. We received a grant to put together a program, to train and certify individuals on the use of a duct blaster and blower door. The course will give you the knowledge on how to

calculate the duct leakage and how to measure (verify) the leakage. It also goes over envelope leakage for residential homes. More on this later! This new certification is called SCDET (South Carolina Duct Envelope Tightness) verifier. Go to www. to register. There are two modules; Module One is the academic side which you must pass to continue to Module Two. Module Two consists of the hands on training and field testing. In two days or less you will be given the knowledge and experience to test your work. All this for only $310!

More on the IECC code. Builders don’t like to spend any more than that have to spend. IECC is adding to their building cost. Just having a HERS rater test the duct system is $150 or more. Builders are as required to build a tighter house. THE IECC 2009, which is what South Carolina adopted in 2012, went into effect 01/01/13. A builder has the option of building a home using prescripted measure that exempts the home from having a blower door test conducted. When IECC 2012 is adopted, then the home will have to be tested with a blower door. This could be future work for the HVAC contractor. Ready or not duct testing is here. I believe we should be the one testing our work. Just like we test our gas lines and plumbers test their water lines. Knowledge is power. So empower your company to do more. Cool Aid Warms Hearts in the Midlands “We jumped out of the helicopter as it landed on the ground. One of our guys got picked off by a bullet. I was behind him and was able to pull him out of a creek and get him to a medic.” Over a dozen licensed volunteers participating in The South Carolina Association of Heating and Air Conditioning Contractors Cool Aid Warms Hearts program leaned in to hear more of Sgt. James White’s experiences in Vietnam.

The men formed a semi circle around the purple heart recipient. Old duct work littered the ground where they stood.
“Words can’t express how much I appreciate this,” White said earnestly. A jagged scar on White’s right arm, a reminder of where a bullet ripped through his body during the war. The scar visible as White reached out to shake the hands of all the men who volunteered to help him. “You all are a blessing. Really,” White’s sincerity impossible to ignore.

“I could see some of our guys tearing up as they listed to him,” Cool Aid Warms Hearts President Medd Box told a television reporter who was on site to cover the event.
“This is exactly the kind of person you want to help,” Box said. The 69 year old veteran retired from the post office. His wife of 45 years has breathing problems. Ventilation is poor in the White’s small Columbia (SC) home. The couple’s electric bills are anything but small. White says he pays about $440 per

month. The Cool Aid Team changed that.

How It Works

SCAHAAC teams up with the Sustainability Institute to help South Carolinians in need state wide. The Institute identifies recipients who are in need and helps weatherize their homes. “The Institute’s involvement is critical. Without adequate insulation and other weatherization elements, a new HVAC unit could simply be blowing cool or warm air into the attic or under the house or even out the window,” Box says.

The licensed HVAC professionals with SCAHAAC are determined to make sure when they install a new system into a Cool Aid home that it is not a one time gift. In the case of Sgt. White’s house, “We feel like we’ll be able to cut his monthly bill by 20 percent,” Box said. “That’s the difference between being able to buy groceries, or paying a medial bill,” Mr. White said shaking his head. Sgt. White is the second home a Cool Aid Warms Hearts team has revamped last year. In February, professionals from Airmax, Custom Climate LLC, Air Concept Solutions, LLC, General Wholesale Distributors, and Yandle Witherspoon Supply met in Charleston, SC to help Janice King. King is the widow of a veteran. Her grown children serve in the military and in law enforcement.

Just The Beginning “Our goal is to take this program to all ten chapters of the association that cover the state, ” said SCAHAAC spokeswoman Leigh Faircloth. “We’re proud to able to give back to these Americans who’ve given up so much for us and we are extremely proud of our association members who jump at the chance to give back.” Broom Heating & Air Conditioning, Stoudenmire Heating & AC, Johnstone Supply, Epting Distributors, Palmetto Air Conditioning & Electric and Pardee’s Refrigeration & A/C provided their time, labor and supplies to help the White family. In addition, several of SCAHAAC’s industry suppliers provided thousands of dollars of equipment and supplies to assist these contractors in their efforts. The result, priceless.

“Seeing these guys out here, makes me realize that everything I’ve done was worth it,” White told a reporter. These guys, strangers to me until today, came out and really helped us. Wow! Just Incredible!”
