Study of the Civil War evokes images of the clash of armies at such major battles as Antietam, Gettysburg, and Vicksburg. Yet, much of a soldier’s life happened between the fight with hours of drill, the building of fortifications, miles of marching, and days of simply waiting. In his diary entries, William S. McCready reflects on the daily life of a soldier, as well as on the hard work and difficult losses of the 11th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry. It is a story told in chapters of courage, resilience, bravery and honor, and fatigue so great that it could only be overcome through deep personal conviction and strength of purpose that framed the soldiers of the Civil War, both Union and Confederate.
