These tintype or ambrotype images of Union soldiers are 1.5” x 1” in size, smaller than an average postage stamp. Many of these original images had deteriorated during the past 160 years and were dark and scratched. It has been my quest to restore them to their approximate glory as the soldier who had them made would have received them from the photographer. The camera which was used to make them, could take four images at a time on one photographic plate. They would then be separated and placed into thin metal frames, to be sent home or to be traded with a soldier’s buddies.
Civil War photographers who created these images, saw the need which was expressed by soldiers, to have something for their families and wives to remember them by should they not return from the war. Also available were small albums which could be used to store the images of fellow soldiers. That is how many of these photos were preserved for future generations and why we have them today.
