Financial Wellbeing
Financial wellbeing is how people feel about the control they have over their financial future - and their relationship with money. It’s about focusing on the things that make their life enjoyable and meaningful, both now and in retirement.
Being financially well, isn’t the same as being wealthy. It’s about being able to budget properly, manage debts, save for the future and absorb unexpected costs. Having the knowledge to make informed financial decisions and understanding when and how to seek advice is key.
What does financially healthy look like?
• Being able to budget properly
• Manage debts
• Save for the future
• Contribute to a pension
• Absorb unexpected costs
• Having the knowledge to make informed financial decisions and understanding when and how to seek advice
• Being free from financial stress and worry
Why is it important that we are financially healthy?
• Mental Health – poor financial wellbeing is linked with higher levels of stress, anxiety and depression
• Sleep – 19% of employees report having lost sleep over their finances
• Concentration – 10% of employees reporting finding it hard to concentrate or make decisions

Substance Misuse and Gambling Support
The cost-of-living can place great strain on the psychological wellbeing of our people, which could lead to substance misuse and gambling. Many people are unaware they have a problem and if this continues or worsens it can have a devastating consequence on individuals and families, affecting all aspects of life including relationship, health, work and self esteem.
Unfortunately, this is not a long-term solution, as the situation causing those feelings is unresolved. If you, or anyone you work with, is experiencing this please be aware that support is available from the Staff Psychology Service to help you cope with any feelings or distress caused by work. You can contact us on: sath.staffpsychology@nhs.net and someone will be in contact with you.

Energy and Money Saving Tips
This isn’t going to change the energy price increases but some of these could save you a little money that adds up over the course of a year.
• Wrap up warmer
• Install a smart meter
• Save water by setting a timer in the shower
• Look into Cavity wall insulation grants
• Only heat the rooms you are using, (for example if you live alone and don’t use two of the bedrooms turn of the heating/radiators in those rooms)
• Energy saving lightbulbs
• Only fill the kettle with as much water as you need
• Turn of lights when you leave the room
• Switch off plugs when not using
• Prioritise what you owe – if you have credit cards – can you transfer the balance? Look at MSE website: Money Saving Expert
• Have no spend days
• Cancel subscriptions you don’t need/use
• Cut back on small things for example – one coffee each day that costs £2.60 for each working day of the year (based on a five day working week) = a saving of over £580 per year!
• Sell unwanted items – facebook sellers, ebay, other websites
If you are struggling with paying your bills, get support, talk to someone, look at what is available for you, including food banks, warm home discount, winter fuel payments and other grants: Citizens Advice.

NHS Pensions Member Events
The NHS Pensions member events aim to help members understand everything you need to know about your NHS pension and how to navigate through the Scheme.
We have a number of events planned throughout the year:
• Understanding the NHS Pension Scheme and its benefits
• Your Total Rewards Statement and Annual Benefit Statement explained
• Your retirement options explained
You can find the links to register for 2022 events here.
Each webinar includes a presentation lasting approximately 40 mins followed by a Q&A session during which you can ask questions. The team may not be able to answer any queries relating to your individual member record but will be able to advise on how to get more information. There’s also an opportunity at the end of the sessions to give feedback on the event.
Contributions to the NHS Pension Scheme are Changing
In 2022, the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) proposed changes to the amount members pay for their NHS Pension benefits. NHS Pensions wrote to members at the time and explained that some changes would take effect on 1 October 2022, while others would happen later.
The DHSC launched a further public consultation in October 2023 to set out the proposals for the second phase of these changes to member contributions. In February this year, the DHSC confirmed that some of the proposed changes will go ahead on 1 April 2024. NHS Pensions are again writing to members to explain the changes with additional information that only effect some members.
Your
contribution
rate may change
The contribution rates for members and employers are reviewed regularly to make sure all members benefit fairly, and to help keep the pension scheme affordable for everyone. The following changes to contributions confirmed by DHSC are the second and final phase of reforms informed by the latest review.
Changes to the way contribution tiers are reviewed each year
Contribution tiers will be automatically reviewed in line with the % increase in the Consumer
Price Index (CPI) on 1 April every year, with the exception of the lowest tier. This rate already anticipates that members’ earnings in this tier may not be high enough to benefit from tax relief on their pension contributions. If the Agenda for Change pay award for England that is announced later in the year is higher than the increase in CPI, contribution tiers will be updated to reflect the higher pay award.
The table below shows the new contribution rates for each salary range.
Contribution rates for each salary range from 1 April 2024
Pensionable salary range
Contribution rates from 1 April 2024, based on actual annual pensionable pay
Up to £13,259 5.2%
£13,260 to £26,831 6.5%
£26,832 to £32,691 8.3%
£32,692 to £49,078 9.8%
£49,079 to £62,924 10.7%
£62,925 and above 12.5%
Employers will contribute more to your NHS pension
From 1 April 2024, the amount employers pay towards members’ pensions will go up from 20.6% to 23.7% of pensionable pay. The Trust will pay 14.38% and the government will make up the difference.
Changes that only affect some members
The Public Service Pensions Remedy – McCloud
On 1 April 2015, the government made changes to public service pension schemes which treated members differently based on their age. The ‘Public Service Pension Schemes Remedy’ puts this right and removes age discrimination for the ‘remedy period’, which is between 1 April 2015 and 31 March 2022.
Part 1 of the remedy closed the 1995/2008 Scheme on 31 March 2022. Active members who were affected by the remedy became members of the 2015 Scheme on 1 April 2022.
Part 2 of the remedy moved the 2015 Scheme pensionable service of affected members back into the 1995/2008 Scheme for the remedy period on 1 October 2023. This is called ‘rollback’.
NHS Pensions are putting processes and support tools in place to allow working members affected by the remedy to choose between 1995/2008 Scheme or 2015 Scheme pension benefits for the remedy period when they claim their pension. They will write in phases to ask eligible members already receiving their pension benefits to make this choice. It will take time to contact everyone, but they expect to have contacted the vast majority of retired members by April 2025.
There is nothing affected members need to do, as NHS Pensions will get in touch when it’s time for you to choose. You can stay up to date with the latest information about the remedy at www.nhsbsa.nhs.uk/public-service-pensions-remedy-mccloud.
‘Special Class Abatement’ rules will be removed for good
The rules for how a pension might be reduced for Special Class and Mental Health Officer (MHO) members who retire on age grounds but return to work before age 60, have been suspended since March 2020. These rules will be removed permanently.
