bulletin for SaTH colleagues and events

Trust represented at Westminster service

Five of our colleagues were selected to represent SaTH at Westminster Abbey for the NHS75 service on Wednesday 5 July.

They are Mel Amor, volunteer; Mei-See Hon, Consultant Obstetrician; Shireen Mitcham, MRI Lead Radiographer; Jamie Henry, Senior Practice Education Facilitator and Kev Malton, Medical Device Library Technologist.

Dr Mei-See Hon, Consultant Obstetrician, said: “The service itself was a moving tribute to the many hundreds of thousands of clinical and non-clinical staff who make up the NHS. It was a truly an honour to be chosen to represent SaTH and be part of the celebrations at Westminster Abbey to mark

the 75th birthday of the NHS.”

Mel Amor, a volunteer at PRH, said: “It was just magical and inspiring. We all felt overwhelmed in the Abbey - it was quite surreal. I think we all felt very honoured to represent SaTH at such an event. We just sat there, taking in our surroundings and it was absolutely fascinating.”

Jamie Henry, Senior Practice Education Facilitator, said: “I felt really proud to be a part of this lifechanging organisation. It was a chance for me to reflect on all the people I have worked with in the NHS and I felt really proud of the massive impact of our collective dedication to serve the communities we live in.”

Louise Barnett, Chief Executive, said: “When the NHS was founded in 1948, it was the first universal health system to be available to all, free at the point of delivery, and it continues to touch all of our lives today.

“The NHS has seen enormous change over the years and faced and risen to

many challenges, but it has always evolved and adapted to meet the needs of each generation, delivering huge medical advances along the way.

“This is all down to the incredible people who together make up our National Health Service. Thank you.”

Your fortnightly Friday 7 July 2023

As part of the NHS75 celebrations, we are showcasing stories from across the organisation...

Caitlin Hayward, Apprentice

At 16 years old, Caitlin is SaTH’s youngest apprentice. She joined us in April 2023 as an Apprentice Personal Assistant in the Surgical Services Management Team.

She said: “I was at a college studying Environmental Conservation but it wasn’t right for me, so I left and started looking at apprenticeships.

“I liked the idea of working and learning at the same time and came across this one on the NHS website.

“I’ve had to learn about all sorts of things as part of my role, including HR issues, surgical procedures, diary management and taking minutes in meetings. It’s been a bit of a whirlwind in the short time I’ve been here, but I’m really enjoying it. I love learning new things and I am being given more to do each week with lots of training on the side.

“I am really proud to work for the NHS. It’s like a massive support system and there are so many opportunities for people.

“Apprenticeships are a great way to join the NHS and I know I will be able to use the core skills I’m learning now for many years to come.”

Jean Scott, Response Volunteer

Jean has been volunteering with us in Telford for 28 years.

She helps visitors by giving them directions, taking them to wards and comforting them in times of need. She hopes to carry on for as long as she can. Click here to watch the video.

Robotic surgery

Our surgeons have performed their first operations assisted by a state-of-the-art surgical robot.

As well as providing patients with high quality care, robotic surgery is helping reduce the length of time they are spending in hospital following complex operations. Patients are recovering quicker, with some even going home the same day. Click here to watch the video.

Pearl Prinold, a former colleague in the Central Sterile Services Department (CSSD)

NHS75 is an opportunity for us to celebrate our wonderful staff - past and present.

One of our colleagues, Vicki Robinson, has kindly shared the story of one of her relatives and former colleague, Pearl Prinold.

She said: “I had the privilege of knowing Pearl as my husband’s nan. She worked within the Central Sterile Services Department (CSSD) at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital from 1971 to 1995.

“She was immensely proud to

work for the NHS and always felt valued for the work she did.

“She would tell us many stories about her team and how they were like family to her.

“As the first female ambulance driver in Shropshire, she was a real trailblazer for women and was determined to do anything that a man could do.

“Her mantra was ‘you are no better than anyone, but you are just as good!”

Pearl sadly passed away in December 2020 at the age of 94.

We thank her, and others like her, for their years of service in the NHS.

Lynne Taylor, Clinical Service Manager in Cardiorespiratory

Lynne (centre) has worked for the NHS for over 50 years.

She started her NHS career in Cardiology at The Royal Hospital in Wolverhampton (later to become known as New Cross) in February 1971.

Lynne stayed there for 30 years, before leaving to do some locum work. She joined SaTH in 2001 as Lead Technician for Pacing before progressing to become Head of Department in 2002. Lynne says that she is still going strong (albeit with a few more aches and pains) and plans to retire at the end of September.

Thank you for your long service Lynne – what an incredible achievement!

Executive Team delivers the goods

Members of our Executive Team have been busy visiting teams and departments throughout the week for NHS75.

They delivered cupcakes, biscuits and other goodies as a token of appreciation to colleagues and to help spread some birthday cheer!

Ice creams go down a treat

As a thank you to colleagues, ice cream vans visited both hospital sites on Wednesday 5 July.

All colleagues were invited to come and claim their free ice cream as part of our NHS75 celebrations. The vans also stopped by our sites at Atcham Business Park, Shrewsbury Business Park, Queensway and Severn Fields.

A whopping 3,000 ice creams were given out in total!

NHS75 Keepsake Daisies

As part of the NHS75 celebrations on 5 July, colleagues were given the opportunity to purchase a special NHS75 Keepsake Daisy. The daisy, created by British Ironworks Centre, is an NHS75 version of the beautiful NHS Rainbow Daisies released during the pandemic.

In May, colleagues could nominate team members for their exceptional work as part of a special NHS75 Thank You Daisy campaign led by SaTH Charity. Nominated colleagues were also presented with their daisies this week as a token of appreciation for going the ‘extra mile’.

Colleague can purchase a daisy by clicking here.

NHS75 tile workshop

As part of NHS75 we were delighted to partner with Jackfield Tile Museum in Telford, to help the NHS celebrate its 75th birthday by creating unique tiles using the traditional process of tube-lining.

Creating an outline using clay slip, colleagues infilled their patterns with an array of beautiful-coloured glazes. The tiles were then dried and fired in a kiln to 1030°C degrees.

Finished tiles will be mounted around our sites soon. Thank you to everyone who took part and thank you to Jackfield Tile Museum.

Congratulations to the Senior Leadership and Coaching Programme graduates!

Participants on the Senior Leadership and Coaching Programme celebrated completion of the programme on Wednesday 5 July.

There were some fantastic presentations on improvement projects they have been working on as part of a truly inspiring day coinciding with the NHS 75th birthday.

The programme was run in partnership with Cherry Dale and Janet Fox, of ‘Become Coaching’. Starting in September 2022 the programme included topics such as understanding yourself as a leader, leading a coaching culture and building high performance

teams, among other topics. Certificates were presented by Nigel Lee and Hayley Flavell.

World Wellbeing Week

World Wellbeing Week took place from Monday 26 June to Friday 30 June and provided an opportunity for colleagues to celebrate all aspects of wellbeing, from mental wellbeing to physical and emotional health, financial security, and ensuring we have the right things and in place to support you with a healthy and flexible working environment.

The Wellbeing Team organised a Health and Wellbeing Roadshow which was open to all colleagues. The roadshow promoted our health and wellbeing offer and staff received a free health MOT, hints and tips about healthy eating, exercise and quitting smoking, plus lots more.

Thank you to everyone who took part!

Consultant and GP System Welcome

The recent Consultant Welcome event brought together newly appointed Integrated Care System (ICS), SaTH and GP colleagues and was a huge success.

The two-day event focused on a greater understanding of the ICS and SaTH strategic direction and creating an environment for peer support and networking across the healthcare boundaries.

Time was dedicated to exploring what leadership means in their new role with Dr Tony Berendt from the Faculty of Medical Leadership and Management.

In addition, discussion with leaders of key services within SaTH reviewed wider working relationships across the Trust from Operational Teams to Research and Innovation. Meeting the Chair and Non-executive Directors stimulated dialogue about how the Trust functions and the involvement needed from senior doctors.

Jenni Rowlands, Deputy Medical Director at SaTH,

Exercise Waste Side

said: “Building on the SaTH Consultant Welcome, we were delighted to partner with our system colleagues to provide a forum for Consultants across the ICS including SaTH, RJAH, MPFT and GPs to ensure they are welcomed and understand the unique community they are now part of. I really enjoyed meeting new colleagues and I look forward to working with them.”

EPRR is the programme of work that sees the NHS planning for, and responding to, incidents and emergencies that could affect health or patient care such as extreme weather conditions, an outbreak, IT outage or local transport accident.

We facilitated Exercise Waste Side on 4 July at PRH. This involved West Mercia Police, Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service and West Midlands Ambulance Service and tested our response to a simulated chemical incident. Thank you to everyone who took part and made it a success.

Congratulations to our SaTH Improvement award winners!

On Friday 26 May we held the annual SaTH Improvement Sharing Showcase where attendees heard about some great improvement projects happening across the Trust.

During the event, awards were presented to individuals and teams for their efforts in our improvement journey. Awards were presented by Dr Ed Rysdale. Congratulations to all!

Winners:

• Jayne Edwards and Cat Rowlands for looking at reducing the backlog of breast screening appointments which demonstrated a high degree of co-production via public engagement sessions, as well as with colleagues. Full case study here.

• Candice Rees and Bethany Toop who won the 5S award. This project stood out due to the extensive engagement with all colleagues on the ward and demonstrated a real MDT approach. Additionally, by reducing the stock levels by eliminating unnecessary items, the team managed to create a quiet space which is being utilised for patients to improve their wellbeing while staying on the ward, as well as an opportunity to hold difficult conversations in private. Click here for the full case study.

Roberts who won an award for improving statutory training compliance for the cleanliness teams. This project stood out due to extensive colleague engagement, use of data, and listening to colleagues to help develop an alternative training programme that achieved the overall aim. Full case study here

• Dr Abdul Raheem Khan received the award on behalf of Dr Fraser Morgan (FY1) for his QIP around improving communication between nursing colleagues and doctors. This project stood out due to having a good SMART aim, good baseline and outcome metrics following the test of change, and good engagement with colleagues to develop the process that helped achieve the aim. Full case study here

• Shelbey Fenton-Cook for work in improving the flow of patients from inpatient wards to the Discharge Lounge at RSH. This project stood out due to a high level of engagement with stakeholders and co-production. Shelbey is undertaking her SaTH Improvement Practitioner course and used some of the tools and concepts to help her and the team find solutions and make the improvements necessary to achieve her aim.
