Take part in Annual Recognition Week & The Trust Celebratory Awards

We are delighted to share with you our exciting programme for this year’s Annual Recognition Week & the Trust Celebratory Awards.

Annual Recognition Week will kick off with celebrations from Monday 6 November, with a number of events recognising and celebrating the fantastic contribution that colleagues, volunteers and partners make, supporting our patients, families and communities, whether in frontline teams, or working behind the scenes.

We have used your feedback to inform the design of this year’s events and awards, with an exciting range of award categories, some of which are

new.

The awards will be virtual and will be streamed so you will be able to watch these on the night or catch up later when you can, and this year, we will also be holding a dinner for all the fabulous winners.

The Trust Celebratory Awards are now open for nominations! Please take the opportunity to nominate the brilliant colleagues you work with and highlight the amazing work that they do. Silver award for Acute Medical Unit

Well done to the Acute Medical Unit (AMU) at PRH which has achieved the silver Exemplar accreditation – the first area to achieve such a high standard in more than three years.

The Exemplar Programme is linked to the Trust’s values and underpinned by the five CQC domains of care, which have been utilised as the framework.

AMU Ward Manager Kerry Tasker and her colleagues were presented with certificates of achievement and a badge by Hayley Flavell, Director of Nursing, Kara Blackwell, Deputy Chief Nurse and Lisa Walker, Quality Matron. They were also presented with a trolley of treats.

Hayley Flavell said: “You should be incredibly proud of what you have achieved in challenging circumstances. To be the first to receive a silver accreditation is absolutely brilliant.”

The assessment programme sets out clear

standards and measurements to help colleagues understand where they are already delivering fantastic patient care and areas where they may require some improvement.

Our ward/unit accreditation scheme is led by senior nursing and AHP teams who assess wards /units in 11 areas including patient experience, patient safety, documentation, tissue viability, leadership, infection prevention & control, environment, care, communication and compassion, falls and nutrition and hydration.

The Exemplar accreditation brings together key measures of nursing and clinical standards into a single overarching framework to enable a comprehensive assessment of the quality of care at ward or unit level.

Other wards are also working towards the accreditation and hopefully will be following in AMU’s footsteps very soon.

Welcome to new doctors at SaTH

This month we have welcomed around 150 Foundation Year 1 level doctors to our Trust.

The doctors are currently having their induction, which includes lectures, practical training sessions and peer-to-peer teaching.

Each individual will make a hugely valuable contribution to our hospitals over the next 12

months.

This week also saw the junior doctor Foundation Year 2 induction. As part of the many information stands, an Electronic Patient Record (EPR) stall was available to show our new doctors the CareFlow system, which will be replacing SemaHelix, and the new electronic CAS card. If you would like to find out more about the EPR programme, visit www.digital.sath.nhs.uk

Making a Difference to our organisation

Our latest Making a Difference online conversation is now live.

The NHS People Promise makes a commitment that: ‘We each have a voice that counts; We all feel safe and confident to speak up. And we take the time to really listen to understand the hopes and fears that lie behind the words.’

So, we are inviting you to join in and tell us your views about our leadership development offer. We know from our Staff Survey and People Pulse

surveys that leadership needs to improve within our organisation. Everything you contribute is completely anonymous and the online conversation will be open for three weeks. Please join in and share your experience, ideas and comments.

This is part of our Making a Difference Together culture change programme that seeks to make sure that all colleagues have a voice in making SaTH a great place to work.

Brothers put themselves into bat to raise hospice funds

Robert Matravers, a Vascular Nurse Specialist at SaTH, and his brother are organising an annual cricket match to raise funds in memory of their parents.

It is the ninth year of the Richard Matravers Memorial Trophy Charity Cricket Match and the twin brothers are appealing for auction and raffle prizes for the event, which takes place on Sunday 27 August.

Robert said: “We lost our dad to cancer back in 2001 and our mum Miriam to cancer back in 2017. Both passed away at St Michael’s Hospice in Hereford. Back in 2012 we decided we would like to try and give something back to the hospice, so with our love of cricket, we decided to set up an annual charity cricket match and to

date we have raised just shy of the £15,000.”

The brothers captain opposing teams for the match, which takes place at Bartestree Cricket Club Hereford, 1pm start.

A JustGiving page has been set up for the match and if you would like to donate click here

Granddaughter’s thanks for Swan Fund care

A granddaughter is putting on her running shoes and taking part in a 10K run to raise money for SaTH Charity and the Swan Fund as a thank you for the help it provided during her grandpa’s last days.

Jasmine Wall said: “In April, my grandpa was admitted to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital due to prolonged pneumonia. My grandpa was not one shy of fighting illness throughout the years, but sadly on 1 May, he fought his last battle.

“In the last few days before his passing, he decided he no longer wished to fight and wanted to go peacefully. If it were not due to the Swan Fund and Swan Model of Care within Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, this would not have been possible.

“Not only did they ensure my grandpa’s last few days were comfortable and peaceful, but they provided my family with great comfort. They gave mats for both my aunt and sister to sleep on, and a recliner chair for my grandma

so that they were comfortable during their long overnight stays in hospital.

“The Swan Fund and Swan Model of Care ensured that despite one of the most difficult times during our family’s lives, our grandpa was still given great support and love, not just from his loved ones, but from the staff too. We are all so moved by RSH’s dedication and hard work given towards my grandpa, but especially the love and care given by the Swan Fund to us all, even in our darkest days.

“Therefore, in honour of my wonderful grandpa, Mike Wall, I am running 10k in March and raising money for the Swan Fund as a sign of my family’s appreciation for all that they have done for us. Any donation - no matter how small - would be so greatly appreciated.” Jasmine will be taking part in the Great Manchester Run in May next year.

Open day for those affected by cancer

Talks, demonstrations and music will be part of an open day being held in Shrewsbury for those who have been affected by cancer.

The Personalised Care Team, who support those living with and beyond cancer at SaTH, is encouraging anybody who is affected by cancer to go along to the open day on Tuesday 8 August.

The event will be held between 10am and 4pm at Palmer’s, Claremont Street, Shrewsbury, SY1 1QG.

Jessica Greenwood, Head of Cancer Services & Lead Cancer Nurse at SaTH, said: “This is a chance to talk about the amazing opportunities for people affected by cancer to get involved in. You are welcome to come along, ask questions, take away information and hopefully reach out to any services that could be of a benefit to you.”

Open Harmony, a community music group, will be there on the day, providing music and talking about the chance for people to get involved with their group, and there will also be the opportunity to have a hand massage.

Members of the team will be talking about personalised care, what the different aspects are within that area and how they could benefit those living with and beyond cancer, including health needs assessments, personalised care and support plans, Living Well Sessions, the award-winning Cancer Information and Support App and treatment summaries.

For more information, contact the Personalised Care Team on sath.lwbc@nhs. net or 01743 492424.

Nursing & Midwifery Revalidation requirements are that:

“you must have undertaken 35 hours of continuing professional development (CPD) relevant to your scope of practice as a nurse or midwife, in the three year period since your registration was last renewed or you joined the register.”

How do the Revalidation Reflective Reading Sessions work:

Prior to the session you will be sent an article to read and a small checklist of points to consider when reading, this will earn you 1.5 hours of CPD time. When you attend the session the article will be discussed in a small group, reflecting on points whilst working through the checklist, this will earn you another 1.5 hours of CPD time. The 3 hours of credited CPD time that you earn from these sessions can be used towards the 35 hours of CPD that you need to acquire to revalidate. During the sessions a checklist is used and the emphasis is upon what can be learned and taken away from the article. You will receive a certificate of participation and attendance.

Thankyou

I would like to extend my most grateful thanks and appreciation to Doctor Hope of your hospital for the kindness and consideration he showed towards my wife on the occasion of our visit.

My wife was concerned after experiencing a number of instances of giddiness whilst we were on holiday in mid-Wales and attended the hospital at the suggestion of the doctor at Llanfair-Caereinion surgery. Despite the fact that there were an enormous number of persons awaiting treatment, and that there was a five-hour wait to be seen, Doctor Hope spent a considerable amount of his time investigating the possibilities and was able to advise and reassure her to her complete satisfaction.

I hope that you will make known to Doctor Hope how very grateful we are to him for his time and his patience even though he was clearly working under a considerable amount of pressure. His advice has been followed and we are pleased and well satisfied with the outcome of his advice.
