Education Week 2023

This week we have marked Education Week which has provided opportunities for us all to reach our potential and ensure everyone has equal access to opportunities, highlighting how we are living the NHS People Promise, and always learning.

Education Week provides a great opportunity to arrange a Career Conversation with your line manager to discuss learning opportunities available to support you to achieve your potential.

We have seen an array of masterclasses, workshops and other opportunities.

Thank you to everyone for taking part.

For any queries about educational opportunities, please contact the Education Support Team at sath. education@nhs.net or call ext. 5801.

SaTH colleagues and events Friday 30 June 2023

As part of Education Week we have held masterclasses to support colleagues and teams to achieve their potential, learn from incidents, create good clinical learning environments and learn more about apprenticeships, work experience, widening participation and more.

Virtual reality experience

Colleagues were able to take part in a virtual reality experience, which allowed participants to find themselves in a VR scenario, either in an acute setting, a nursing home or someone’s home.

The VR experience puts people in a situation where they are dealing with poorly patients, conflicting deadlines and urgent decisions.

The VR experience has been made possible by funding made available to the Marches Colleges Collective, and Telford College has led on the development of it. Its aim is to give students exposure to what it’s like to work in a health and care setting to ensure they are ready and used to a clinical environment.

Tom George, Head of Education Infrastructure and Assurance, said: “We are really excited to have the VR experience available to our colleagues. We plan to use this as a pre-employment tool for apprenticeship and recruitment fayres to engage people in our organisation and the work we do for our communities.”

Introduction to Shropsim

On Tuesday 27 June we held an ‘Introduction to Shropsim’ session at the SaTH Education Training & Facility, RSH. It gave colleagues the opportunity to learn all about simulation, which is the technique of safely replicating ‘real life’ skills, drills, and experiences in an effort to realistically rehearse and train for a range of scenarios in a safe environment.

Education Showcase

On Wednesday 28 June we hosted an Education Showcase to celebrate our learners and hear more about the improvements that are happening across the Trust from technology-enhanced learning to simulation sessions to the future of medical education to continuous improvement to apprenticeships.

Certificates were also given to individuals and teams for 100% compliance with mandatory training. Thank you to everyone who came along!

Rachel scoops the Cavell Star Award

Rachel Armstrong, Head of Non-Medical Education, has won a national award from the Cavell Trust charity. Rachel was nominated by colleagues for going above and beyond in her role. With over 31 years’ experience working in the NHS, 17 of those in an education role, Rachel’s colleagues felt her dedication and commitment was second to none.

Rachel said: “It was such a surprise to receive the Cavell Star yesterday. I have nominated several people over the years to receive one and never thought, in my wildest dreams, I would receive one. I don’t come to work for awards; however, it is an honour and privilege to be recognised for the work I do.

“What is really special, is this award has come from my team who do amazing things daily, and who believe I am worthy of it. I haven’t stopped smiling since the presentation and am chuffed to bits to wear my Cavell Star with pride.”

Cavell Nurses’ Trust is the charity that supports UK nurses, midwives and HCAs, both working and retired, when they’re suffering personal or financial hardship often due to illness, disability, older age and domestic abuse. In 2017, the charity received more than 2,200 calls for help.

Healthcare professionals wishing to nominate a nurse, midwife or HCA for a Cavell Star Award can find out more at www.cavellstarawards.org

Happy Pride Month!

Pride Month is an annual event which provides the opportunity to celebrate LGBTQIA+ communities all around the world.

It commemorates the Stonewall Riots in June 1969 that inspired the historic gay liberation movement and the fight for LBGTQIA+ rights that followed. Today, it is the celebration of the LGBTQIA+ identity and a call to action to recognise pressing issues about equality above all else.

As a Trust, we are fully committed to becoming a more inclusive place for colleagues, patients, and visitors, and we all have a part to play in this. Our SaTH Pride Network network meets monthly via MS Teams and all colleagues are welcome. This network creates a sense of belonging for all colleagues and an inclusive and safe work environment. If you are interested in joining, please contact sath.edi@nhs.net.

Thank you for helping us to celebrate Pride Month at SaTH.

Armed Forces and Reserves Day

This month we have celebrated Reserves Day which recognised the reservists who give up their spare time to serve in the Reserve Forces, balancing their civilian life with a military career to ensure that should their country require them, they would be ready to serve as part of the military. We have also marked Armed Forces Day, which gave us the opportunity to show our support for the men and women who make up the Armed Forces community. This includes the veterans and reservists who work, or are patients, here.

The Trust, along with local partners, organisations and

businesses, support Armed Forces personnel through the Armed Forces Covenant, of which we are a proud signatory. Through the Covenant, we recognise the value serving personnel, reservists, veterans, and military families bring to the Trust.

We are also a Veteran Aware Trust and form part of a group of 104 NHS providers to have been accredited as exemplars of the best care for veterans, helping to drive improvements in NHS care for people who serve or have served and their families.

Adam Wills, Organisational Development Trainer and Veteran of the RAF, John Kerce, branch secretary of the Shropshire Soldiers’, Sailors’, and Airmen’s Families Association and Nigel

Lee, Interim Director of Strategy and Partnerships hosted a stall in the Mytton restaurant on the day and enjoyed celebrating with colleagues.

To all our colleagues who have served or are still serving, and your families, thank you for your dedication and all you do.

Welcome to our new interns!

SaTH is proud to be supporting 10,000 Black Interns to open doors and unlock access to opportunities for bright young talents.

We know diverse teams and boards make better collective decisions for the communities they serve.

Our inclusion improvement plans and people plans have been focused on making sure our recruitment processes are equitable, that we offer fair inclusive career progression for all, have a focus on talent management to improve diversity at senior levels and embrace new ways of working to support different career pathways into the NHS.

This is why we are delighted to be part of the 10,000 Black Interns programme which exists to offer paid internship experience, with training and development, to underrepresented groups. This month we welcome three interns at SaTH who will help us in our vision of providing excellent care for the communities we serve as well as helping us to create a diverse and multi-cultural workforce.

Chaplain’s experience of charity visit to Lebanon

Suleman Bhamji, one of our Chaplains, has spoken about his experience visiting Lebanon with Global Relief Trust (GRT), a Muslim charity which aims to help those in need nationally.

He said: “I have had the great fortune of travelling with team GRT to Lebanon twice, the last visit in April 2023. Lebanon has over 10,000 Syrian refugees who have settled there since the civil war broke out in Syria over 12 years ago.

“The purpose of my visit was to assist in the delivering of aid and to provide feedback to the local community who had contributed greatly during the month of Ramadhan.

“For me personally, Lebanon has been a great eye opener in many ways. From amongst them, these are people whom once upon a time enjoyed

comforts very similar to us only for that to change in unimaginable ways. For many of the children in these refugee camps, particularly those under the age of 12, this is the only life that they know.

“We have a statement of the Prophet Muhammad PBUH, in which he says that God the Almighty says that ‘search for me in amongst your weak’. Just to see the smiles on the faces of the young and old when they are met, their appreciation and kind words of thanks to the donors on receiving aid, that is what really motivates me to continue and desire to go again.”

Team GRT have been successfully working in over a dozen countries, including Bangladesh, Yemen, Burundi, Syria, Lebanon, Pakistan, Kashmir and with the Rohingya refugees. GRT have provided essentials such as food, water, clothing, medical equipment, education as well as developing sustainable projects.

5 July 2023 will mark 75 years of the National Health Service.

This significant milestone provides an opportunity for us all to celebrate our NHS and the difference it makes to people’s lives day in day out.

We have a variety of celebratory activities happening, including:

Ice cream vans

As a thank you to colleagues, ice cream vans will be on both hospital sites between 11am-3pm on Wednesday 5 July.

The vans will be parked outside Stores (at the back of the Mytton Oak Restaurant) at RSH and outside

Women’s & Children’s and close to the rear staff entrance path at PRH.

NHS75 restaurant menu

A special NHS 75 menu will be served in both Apley and Mytton Restaurants on Wednesday 5 July between 12 noon-2pm.

Executive Team walkabouts

Members of our Executive Team will be visiting wards and departments throughout the week to give out cakes and biscuits to teams as a thank you for all you do.

Keep your eyes peeled for the treat trolleys! Full details can be found on the intranet here

Your chance to buy a NHS75 Keepsake Daisy

SaTH Charity is delighted to offer you the opportunity to purchase a special NHS 75 Keepsake Daisy.

The daisy, created by British Ironworks Centre, is an NHS 75 version of the beautiful NHS Rainbow Daisies released during the pandemic.

On the 5 July 1948 Aneurin Bevan ceremoniously launched the NHS at Park Hospital (now Trafford Hospital) in Davyhulme, Manchester.

We look back on this day 75 years later as a significant historical event that marked the birth of an iconic and treasured British institution. The arrival of the ship HMT Empire Windrush at Tilbury docks in 1948, bringing more than 800 passengers from the Caribbean, is a moment that shaped modern Britain. This year both the NHS and Windrush are 75 and this specially commission daisy is to recognise these important events in our

history. Click here to purchase one.

Charity skydive for daredevil swim buddies

Two daredevil swim buddies will be diving head first into fundraising with a charity skydive.

Karen Breese, Dementia Care Clinical Specialist, and her friend Helen Edwards, both pictured, are taking to the skies for their first ever skydive on Saturday 22 July at Tilstock Airfield, Whitchurch.

“I met Helen through wild swimming and gym classes at Love to Stay. She is an amazing support and undertook the cold swim a day in November alongside my other fabulous swim Buddies.

“I always said to my friends and family ‘I will never jump out of a plane’, but thought it needs to be something to push me out of my comfort zone. I am scared already. Helen is always up for a

challenge so is a super support.”

They are hoping to raise more than £500 for the Dementia Appeal. If you would like to donate through their justgiving page please click here

Karen added: “A hospital admission can be a distressing and/or boring place at times for people living with Dementia or Cognitive impairment. We use activities for psychological support/distraction/comfort as part of our strategies to try to deliver good dementia care in environments that are a far removed from what people in are care are used too. These activities range from colouring, dominos, word searches, playing cards to soft toys, therapy dolls and fidget items. Any money we raise will help towards these costs.”

Stepping out to raise money for Swan Fund

Jules Lewis, Swan End of Life Care Facilitator and Lead Nurse, is hoping to raise £1,000 for the Swan Fund by walking from Welshpool to Newtown in Mid-Wales.

This weekend (1 July), Jules and her friend Becks will be walking 15 miles to mark the NHS’ 75th birthday and the eighth birthday of the Swan Fund.

Jules set up the fund in 2015 after her dad sadly passed away. It raises on average £10,000 a year to support people at end of life and those important to them.

Praise for latest cohort on Leadership Programme

The latest cohort has taken part in the SaTH 2 Leadership Programme.

Facilitator Sophie Coutts, People & Organisational Development Manager, said: “SaTH 2 Cohort 2 have been amazing. Their commitment to the programme has been demonstrated not only by their attendance but through the stories they have shared, and the relationships built with everyone on the cohort.

“It really was a safe space for everyone to share and practise, where new ideas were formed, and selfawareness built. As a facilitator it was a pleasure to work with a group that wanted to be there to improve their skills, learn and engage with others as well as the experiential content of the programme.”

STAR Housing Community comes together to support Haematology Unit

The residents of STAR Housing’s supported living community in Broseley have made an incredible donation to SaTH Charity, raising an amazing total of £870 to support the Haematology unit at RSH.

Ernest Wilkie, a resident at Wilkinson Avenue, wanted to give back to the unit where he received treatment. With support from his neighbours, they have raised a fantastic amount that will have a huge impact on the work carried out by the unit.

Ernest is renowned for his selfless acts of kindness. He has recently been shortlisted for the “Tenant of the Year” award at the national Housing Heroes Awards for 2023.

SaTH colleagues were recently on hand to accept

the donation and are pictured with the residents from Wilkinson Avenue, for the big handover.

They were also joined by the Deputy Mayor of Broseley, Caroline Bagnall.

The money was raised by the community rallying together to organise various fundraising events, including coffee mornings and raffles.

Hannah Morris, Head of Public Participation, at SaTH said “Ernest’s donation will make a real difference to our patients and their families, and it was lovely to see how the community came together to support our charity.”

Hannah Morris is pictured with Caroline Bagnall, Ernest and Cath Wilkie, and residents.
