CHATTER BOX Your fortnightly bulletin for SaTH colleagues and events Friday 26 January 2024

Join our colleagues and take the bus A big thank you to everyone who joined the parking Q&A on Monday. Your engagement and involvement is greatly appreciated, as we work together to address the parking challenges at RSH and PRH. We’re committed to helping the parking capacity at both sites, and on top of this, we want everyone to consider sustainable travel options and how we can help. Hop on the bus, walk, cycle, car share - give your car a breather. By doing so you’re freeing up precious parking spots

for our late-shift colleagues. There has been an increase in the amount of colleagues at RSH using the free staff Park and Ride from Oxon. Thank you to everyone, who is embracing the scheme and using the bus. The service runs Monday to Friday, every 15 minutes, starting from 7.20am (more times here). Jump on, and you’re on your way to hassle-free commuting. We are encouraging colleagues to give it a go and see how long it takes. We have received very positive feedback so far from all

who have used it. And you get a free hot drink from Caffé Bistro after every five return journeys. We are hopeful that we can finalise a park and ride service for colleagues at PRH soon and we will keep you updated in the coming weeks. Just remember, we’re in this together. So, grab your Park and Ride loyalty card from our friendly bus drivers, clock in five return journeys, and treat yourself to that free hot drink at Caffé Bistro (T&C here).

Free Oxon Park and Ride bus service is now available for RSH staff Monday to Friday, every 15 minutes from 07.20 to 18.35 Please show staff ID

Cervical Cancer Prevention Week Colposcopy is an examination to have a closer look at your cervix. It checks to see if there are cell changes. There are several reasons why, following cervical screening, you might be invited for a colposcopy. • • • •

Your cervical screening result shows both highrisk HPV and that there are cell changes You don’t have cell changes, but you’ve had three cervical screening results in a row that show high-risk HPV You’ve had several cervical screening tests which all gave an unclear result The nurse or doctor who did your cervical screening wanted a colposcopist to have a closer look at your cervix for a second opinion. Claire Carr, Lead Colposcopy Nurse, spoke with a colleague who had been contacted by the Colposcopy team.

How did you feel after receiving an abnormal smear result? I felt anxious, I had previously had a normal smear history. I worried about what would be seen and if a biopsy would be taken. I felt nervous as it is a part of the body you can’t see yourself, and I hadn’t had any abnormal symptoms.

When you attended your colposcopy appointment, what happened? I spoke to the colposcopist nurse. I was aware of the procedure as I had read the patient information leaflets that were sent with the appointment details. The nurses in the room were very supportive and made me feel comfortable. I had an area identified as abnormal and so a biopsy was taken. I was told what to expect after the appointment and what to look out for. Your biopsy result indicated you needed some treatment in the form of a lletz. How did you find having treatment? The treatment wasn’t as bad as I had feared. I was really nervous beforehand, but it was quite quick. I felt nothing during the procedure as the local anaesthetic had made me numb. How was your experience in the colposcopy clinic? The staff were so professional and supportive. They chatted to me during the procedure, so I knew what was happening. I felt comfortable asking questions throughout. If a friend or relative was referred for an abnormal smear what would you tell them? I would encourage them to attend. The staff are friendly and supportive. Going for screening and following treatment has resolved the CIN (abnormal skin). I would encourage people to take someone with them if they are nervous.

Holocaust Memorial Day 2024 Holocaust Memorial Day on 27 January annually is the International Day of Remembrance in which those who have suffered and died through the holocaust, genocide and persecution are remembered. This day is for everyone and provides an opportunity to bring communities together to remember our common humanity and to commit to standing up to bigotry, hatred and racism wherever it may be encountered today. A copy of the ‘Statement of Commitment’ in several different languages will be displayed in the Chapels Multi-faith rooms at both hospitals on Saturday 27 January. More details may be found at www. hmd.org.uk.

Congratulations to new Professional Nurse Advocate, Nikhil Nikhil Anikoroth received his Professional Nurse Advocate (PNA) certificate from Director of Nursing, Hayley Flavell after qualifying in May 2023.

To arrange a career conversation with your PNA/ PMA, email sath.pna@nhs.net (Nursing) or sath. pma@nhs.net (Midwifery).

Nikhil joined the Trust during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic and worked initially in ED as a staff nurse, sharing his extensive knowledge and skills, whilst learning more about how the NHS works. After two years in ED Nikhil moved to the OSCE preparation team as a Practice Education Facilitator (PEF), where he used his own experience as an internationally trained nurse to help subsequent colleagues achieve NMC registration and successfully embed into the SaTH team. The PEF team really enjoy working with Nikhil, and his clinical knowledge and teaching ability is well respected amongst his peers. Soon after qualifying as a PNA, Nikhil undertook the role of a mentor/assessor to other nurses training to become PNAs, whilst also working as a PEF and a sessional PNA. Nikhils’ commitment is a credit to SaTH.

Success for SaTH 3 Leadership programme The recent SaTH 3 Leadership Group graduated from their training programme. The group started back in September and have regrouped each month. February saw the final module in the programme.

Congratulations to all the delegates – Marie Mason said: “It was fantastic to facilitate the programme alongside Andrew Smith, Bank Trainer and watch each and every colleague grow and develop through the programme.”

SaTH Charity Needs Your Help We have launched a questionnaire to help gather feedback from our supporters, completing this short survey will help the charity to decide what events to run this year and help us to improve, link to the survey here.

Calling all marathon runners! Please get in touch if you are running a marathon this year. We would love to hear from you so we can profile you and your efforts in a future edition of Chatterbox. Send your name, job title, a photo and a brief description on why you are running the marathon to sath.commsteam@nhs.net.

Charity presentation for Children’s ward The Pheasant Inn Golf society, based at the Pheasant Pub in Wrockwardine Wood, Telford kindly raised nearly £6,000 for the Children’s ward at Princess Royal Hospital. The hospital chaplain at PRH had informed Club Captain, Rich Warner that the ward needed a new piece of equipment, a Veinsight VS5000. The Veinsight assists with the insertion of needles in to very hard-to-see veins, this prevents missing the vein, reduces bruising and eliminates further distress for younger patients. Paediatric Ward Manager, Charlotte Davies, and Ward Sister Kate Landers attended the presentation of the equipment.

Are you ready for the SaTH Charity Football Tournament? Following on from the success of last year’s SaTH Charity football tournament, which raised over £1,000 for the charity, colleague Mark Rawlings is organising another seven-a-side tournament for SaTH teams on Sunday 19 May, 10am-4pm at the Shrewsbury Sports Village. All the teams last year had a great day – the weather was kind and many families turned up to cheer on the teams. Why not make it a fun, team building day? If you want to take part, it is £10 per player in each team and the money raised will be donated to the Dementia Care

Appeal fund. There is a trophy for the winning team and a medal for each player. Karen Breese, Dementia Care Clinical Specialist said, “We are so grateful to Mark and the players for choosing the SaTH Dementia Care Appeal. We use lots of single use items to support our patients like reminiscence dolls and soft toys, the money raised will make a real difference to our patients and enable us to provide more support.” The event is limited to 16 teams to register your interest, email mark.rawlings@nhs.net.

Buying and selling annual leave The Trust has issued new guidance for buying and selling annual leave.

Selling annual leave from the current year (2023/24):

The full process is available at the top of the HR Policies page of the intranet here.

Last year we offered staff another opportunity to request to sell some annual leave at the end of the leave year. This proved so popular that we will now be repeating the offer every year. More information and the request form are available in Appendix 3 of the guidance. Completed forms must be submitted to managers and managers must submit approved forms to sath. annualleave@nhs.net by Thursday 29 February 2024. Payments will be made in March’s pay.

Buying and selling annual leave from the upcoming year (2024/25): This gives all employees the opportunity to request to buy or sell annual leave from the upcoming leave year (2024/25). Employees who want to request this must use the form in Appendix 1 of the guidance. Requests must be sent to managers by Monday 18 March 2024 and managers must send approved forms to sath.annualleave@nhs.net by Monday 1 April 2024. Please read the guidance for more information.

If you cannot access the forms from the intranet, please ask your manager for a copy. If you have submitted any requests in the last few months you will need to resend these on the correct forms. If you have any questions about buying or selling annual leave please contact sath. annualleave@nhs.net.

Prestigious charter mark for Trust programme A prestigious charter mark has been awarded for the Trust’s Preceptorship Programme. Heather Rushworth, Senior Practice Education Facilitator (PEF) for Preceptorship, led the Nonmedical Education Team through a robust application process for the charter mark. The Trust is the only one in the local area to receive the charter mark for the programme, which is for all new registrants to attend during the first year of their career. It is made up of a series of study days focusing on topics such as leadership, resilience, quality and safety. SaTH’s Preceptorship Programme is a rolling programme meaning new starters will have access to it within a couple of months of them

starting at the Trust, which is a real advantage for them. It is one of the only trusts regionally who do combined preceptorship for nurses, midwives and Allied Health Professions (AHPs), as usually the professions have separate programmes. Hayley Flavell, Director of Nursing at SaTH, said: “Congratulations to Heather and the Non-medical Education Team for such a fantastic achievement and thank you for all your hard work. The programme shows the innovative ways that we are working to improve the learning and development of my colleagues.” “The advantage of our professionals learning together is that they understand each other’s roles, which will benefit the clinical area and more importantly the patient.”

Christmas decoration winner Over the Christmas period, colleagues across the Trust helped to spread some festive cheer by decking out their wards and offices.

We can now announce that the winning display belongs to the Dermatology Secretaries, RSH, with the Child and Young Persons Unit, named as runners up.

A number of teams sent in entries for our Christmas decorations competition and it was put to the public vote.

Congratulations to everyone on their impressive Christmas displays.

SaTH Christmas Star Winner 2023 Congratulations to Alex Hill in Endoscopy, who is the winner of the 2023 Christmas star award. Alex was nominated by his colleagues who said the following: “Alex is super helpful to all colleagues, nothing is too much trouble and he always has a smile on his face. He brightens up the office with his positive attitude. Everyone should be more ‘Alex’” “Alex is such a joyful and helpful person, no matter what problem you have, he is always willing to do his upmost to

help, and he does it with a smile on his face. It is an absolute pleasure to work with Alex every day and I don’t know what we would do without him.” “Alex has been in post for a few months now (Endoscopy Coordinator), learning a complex, busy and demanding role and he is always very positive and helpful responding to whatever issue colleagues bring to him. He is always smiling and very welcoming to everyone and will go out of his way to help.” Well done to Alex, and every one of the worthy nominations.
