The purple zone parking area is moving
10 June 2025
From Wednesday 11 June the purple zone car parking by the Treatment Centre at RSH will be relocated to behind Stretton House
The current location of the purple zone has led to traffic backing up on the one-way system and has led to delayed ambulances, the Park & Ride service not operating to its timetable and traffic not being able to leave the site in a timely manner
Due to this and the reduction in spaces due to the Modular Ward project, we are relocating the purple zone to in front of Block 3, which is near Stretton House
The purple zone parking area was created to safeguard parking spaces for those clinical colleagues who work outside of the hours of the Park & Ride, and for those that may need to get to the hospital quickly for either cross-site or on-call work
With the modular ward project reducing the number of spaces available, the decision has been made to move the purple zone parking to give better access and to eventually provide more spaces
These spaces are available for current pre-registered colleagues from 8 45am These spaces are on a first come first served basis and once the purple zone is full colleagues will need to park in other car parks or use the Park & Ride
Where will it move to?
It will move to behind Stretton House, off Evolution Road There will be 32 spaces initially, and then approximately a further 30 spaces from Monday 16 June 2025
When leaving the site from Evolution Road, there is no right turn to ensure the smooth flowing of traffic Parking attendants will be onsite to advise
New purple zone parking
Who can park in the purple zone?
Cross-site and on-call - colleagues needing to travel between sites
The criteria for these permits are as follows:
Clinical colleagues who need to travel between sites during the day who need to get into clinics or patient meetings urgently This is for travel during the day and not for parking in the area at the beginning of the day or remaining in spaces for the whole day
Clinical colleagues who are ‘ on call’ for a specialty and may be called to the other site in emergency circumstances during the day This is not for out of hours on-call parking or for on-call which does not involve moving sites during the day
Colleagues who do not have an urgent need to get into the hospital should use the Park & Ride when moving between sites during the day
Twilight shift - colleagues finishing work after 9 25pm
The criteria for these permits are as follows:
Clinical colleagues who start work later in the day and their finish time would be outside of the Park & Ride operating times which is currently 9 25 pm
On the days that colleagues in this group are not doing a shift ending after the Park & Ride service ends they must use the Park & Ride or park in the other staff car park areas
What to do if you think you are eligible for purple zone parking?
If you think you may be eligible to park in the purple zone you should ask your line manger to email sth-tr carparking@nhs net
They will need to provide the reasons why a permit is required
They will need to tell us if the shift patterns do not fall within the Park & Ride timetable and the reasons why the Park & Ride cannot be used
You will need to hold a valid parking permit
Requests must be made via email. Please note that these spaces are not guaranteed and are allocated on a first come first serve basis. Anyone found parking in this area without a valid purple permit could be subject to receiving a Parking Charge Notice (PCN).
Facilities will continue to see how we can support colleagues who require this provision, but we would ask if you can use the Park & Ride. This provision will be managed daily by the parking attendants manning this provision but we will be looking to automate the process in the future.
If you work within the hours of 6 20am and 9 25pm and currently pay to park on site, please consider using the Park & Ride - save money, get your free drink and take the stress out of finding a parking space
This is a free service, designed to take the stress out of parking on site and free up spaces for colleagues that can’t use it.
