A big welcome to our new cohort of junior doctors joining us this month. Junior doctors are a key part of our medical workforce and we look forward to working with them over the next 12 months.

We’re listening

The NHS is an extraordinary, world-class service.

Together we have achieved, and continue to achieve, the extraordinary. We should all feel immensely proud of this. We want our culture to be positive, compassionate, and inclusive – and we all have our part to play.

Following your feedback, in recent years we have implemented a cultural transformation programme built around three flagship programmes, which has brought about cultural improvements across all the People Promise elements and themes.

It is really important that you all share how you are feeling at work. Whether that’s through the annual Staff Survey, which will launch next month, regular People Pulse surveys, to your line manager or any other route.

Spotlight on: The Therapies Team

The Outpatient Therapies Team received a high Staff Survey completion rate last year with improved results and the team has since had regular meetings to discuss the findings and feedback and have implemented many changes to improve staff experience.

Some of the improvements include:

• Flexible Working requests are supported where possible

• Diary templates have been reviewed and ensured they are workable to ease rigidity in an outpatient setting

• Shining a spotlight on and recognising successes

• We encourage audits where possible, and have increased these in outpatients in the last year

• All staff receive meaningful appraisals and line managers have all received the relevant training

• Increased team communication and clarity of roles and responsibilities

• Regular staff meetings to enhance communication

• We have added to our monthly staff meeting an item of datix reporting in more detail, so staff can see responses to any datix raised and ensure learning is taken

• The team is reviewing the process for requesting training funds so that colleagues have more clarity and the process is less lengthy

• The team has reviewed accommodation across site in Outpatients to try and ensure some quiet space for study time and SPA time

• Increased visibility of the therapy operational manager and team managers

• Importantly we have actively listened and made an action plan which is shared with our teams

Lisa Walker Takes #CycleToWork

Day to the next Level

Quality Matron Lisa Walker took Cycle To Work Day up a gear, by cycling from Shrewsbury to the Princess Royal Hospital (PRH) for an 8am meeting on Thursday 1 August. This is a journey of 17 miles and Lisa decided to use this challenge to raise money for SaTH Charity.

The journey didn’t take Lisa as long as planned and she managed to snap a few shots en-route, stopping at the entrance to Attingham Park before she arrived at the Princess Royal.

Lisa has raised nearly £300 for the charity. You can still donate to Lisa’s challenge via the link below or in the link in bio on Instagram:

https://www.justgiving.com/ page/lisa-walker-1721737616091

Lisa said “When I first agreed with my colleagues to cycle to work, I thought I was working at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital site but when I checked my diary, I realised I was at PRH. I love a challenge and my motto is you are never too old to take on a challenge, every turn of the wheel is one step closer to the goal.”

Inese to run at the Paris Olympic Games

For the first time in the history of the Olympic Games, the public has been given an opportunity to participate.

Inese Robotham, Assistant Chief Executive, is getting ready to take part in the Marathon Pour Tous, a mass participation marathon for amateur runners from around the world. The event will be held at night on Saturday 10 August and will follow the same 42,195km loop from Paris to Versailles as the one run by Olympic athletes earlier in the day.

Inese has completed 21 marathons, including all six Abbott World Majors in Berlin, Chicago, Boston, London, New York and Tokyo.

In order to be allocated one of the much-coveted bibs,

prospective applicants had to complete a variety of challenges during the two years preceding the Olympics. Following each successful challenge the participants were entered in a draw for a chance to be allocated one of the 20,024 starting spots in the mass participation marathon.

Inese said: “I got into running quite late in life and I am not a fast marathoner, but I am quite stubborn which definitely helps over long distances. Running has taken me to places where otherwise I probably would not have ventured to. It has facilitated friendships within the running community all over the world. I was really taken by the ethos of Paris Olympics of making the Games accessible

to the masses, but never in my wildest dreams did I think that I would be one of the few out of the hundreds of thousands of hopefuls worldwide who will get a chance to experience the Olympic Marathon route in Paris.”

Good luck Inese!

League of Friends Grand Summer Draw

There is still time to enter the League of Friends grand summer draw, which will take place on Thursday 22 August. Tickets are available from the League of Friends shops and all donations go toward funding equipment for the hospital.

Kate has been volunteering for the League of Friends since January. For Kate it was the perfect step back in to work. Kate said: “My favourite thing about working in the hospital is meeting new people and being able to lend an ear to those who need to talk. I have experienced loneliness and to be able to give something back to other people who may feel alone and scared has been really rewarding.”

Harriet is one of a few employees that work for League of Friends. For Harriet working in the hospital is a bit of a family legacy. She said: ‘My nan, June Edwards worked here in the League of Friends many years ago, I am really proud that I get to do the same thing and put smiles on peoples faces when they might be having a bad day.’

Thank you

Recently my father was rushed to ICU from the Gobowen Hospital in Oswestry. He was very ill with a bacterial infection similar to meningitis. On behalf of all my family, especially my mother and brother I would like to thank you deeply for the care and attention afforded to my dad during his stay. I wish I knew everyone’s name so I could list them personally, but Dr Raj and Staff Nurse Ben we will never forget you.

Please keep doing what you do, it’s not a job for you guys, it’s a calling!
