North of 49 sold in 2020 to Wernacres Farms and we maintained the Canadian semen rights in him. He has now sired two calf crops there and they have been well accepted. In the Wernacres 2022 fall online sale, a North of 49 heifer topped the sale at $35,500. One breeder who went through the calves at Wernacres, said that the North of 49 sire group was the best he had seen in any breed at any time! His semen didn’t arrive in Canada until late June so many breeders missed getting semen before now.
North of 49 55G is a DS carrier but is free of all other defects and is myostatin free.
Semen is $50/straw (min 5) - stored at Alta, Eastgen and on farm.
Hollywood sold at $24,000 to Major John Gibb and family in Scotland in our 2021 sale. After his semen was collected, he returned here and we bred some cows to him. His calves born here in 2022 were 100% unassisted at birth from females that had at least one previous calf. He is defect free, myostatin free and homozygous polled. His first progeny will be offered in the Sun Country Sale on March 23, 2023.
Semen is $40/straw (min 5) and is stored at Alta, Eastgen and on farm.
Bluebook topped our 2015 sale at $32,000. After his show career was over we were able to bring him back here as a herd sire. Unfortunately, he was lost to an injury but his calves were some of our very best. He is defect free, myostatin free and homozygous polled. Semen is $40/straw (min 5) and is stored at Alta, Eastgen and on farm.
We imported Unique semen from Australia and we have been pleased with his offspring born here. A Unique son was our high selling bull in 2022 at $9950 selling to Starbright Shorthorns, Bonnyville, AB, Unique is defect free and myostatin free Semen is $40/straw (min 5) and is stored at Alta, Eastgen and on farm.
We have semen available on numerous other sires as well.
We would like to thank everyone who bid and bought in our online cowherd dispersal. We will be offering our 2022 bulls and heifers in the Sun Country Sale on March 23, 2023. We still have a good selection of embryos and semen available.

Everyone
Welcome to another New Year! I hope everyone has been able to spend time with family and friends through the Holiday Season and take some time to reflect on everything that is good in our lives. We have so much to be thankful for, despite all the things we see in our daily lives that bother us.
I have taken some time to reflect on the past as well as the future myself and one thing that I can hardly comprehend is the fact that we started this magazine, over 23 years ago. This means that this is the 93rd editorial I have written for it. In some ways it is also the hardest one I have written.
I can still remember the day the decision was made to start publishing this breed magazine. It was the summer of 1999, and we had not had a Shorthorn breed magazine in Canada for almost two years. I have always felt that our breed needed a source of information on what other breeders across this huge country were doing in their breeding programs. This was completely missing at that time.
One day I was in the Saskatchewan Livestock Association office and I mentioned my concerns to Belinda Wagner. During this conversation, Belinda asked me why I didn’t start a breed magazine to fill this void that I saw? I told her that there was no way I could do this by myself, as I had far too much on my plate to even keep up on my own farm. This discussion led to us deciding to work together and give the magazine a try. I honestly thought we would only produce a few issues before we found someone else to take this venture on.
As we all know, change is about the only thing that is constant in all of our lives. This has certainly hit me right between my eyes in the past year. First came my decision to disperse my cowherd in November due to health issues that could affect how much I can do for a while.
Then came Belinda’s decision to accept a new role with the Canadian Angus Association. I was not surprised by her decision, as I have been expecting it for a few years. There are always others wanting the best employees from other organizations. I can think of few people I have known who have done their job as well as Belinda has. Her work ethic and her attention to detail are hard to improve on. I am honored to have been able to work with her and her staff on this magazine, for as long as I have. I want to thank Belinda for her dedication and also want to wish her well in the future. Our breed has been fortunate to have you on board with us!
For the past several years my wife Chris has been doing most of the magazine layout and ad design, but she needs to reduce the amount of time she spends working on a computer screen due to multiple eye surgeries. She feels this is the proper time for her to step back from working on the magazine as well.
With everything considered, I have decided that the March 2023 issue will be our last issue of this publication.
Originally, I felt that this issue (January 2023) would be the last one, but then decided to do the March issue as well, as it would allow more time for someone to step forward to take this publication over, and it also would get the breed through the spring sale season. There is a fair-sized gap after the March issue as the next issue has been the Herd Reference issue in August.
I also feel as strongly today that we need a breed magazine in this breed. Times have changed since we started with so many other ways to promote our breeding program and the breed. The internet has changed our promotion opportunities in so many ways. It is far easier to connect with other breeders today than at any other time in our past.
That said, a breed magazine still has major importance. In the past few years, I have asked several people who are involved in other breeds if their breed magazine is still relevant. In every case, the response has been a definite “Yes”. Not a single person has said that a breed magazine in no longer relevant. We need every source of promotion we have to keep our breed and our breeding programs promoted properly. Marketing our product is just as important as producing it.
When I look back over the past 90 plus issues of this magazine, two things stick out to me:
1) I think we have become much better in producing this magazine and 2) the Shorthorn breed is much stronger today that it was when we started in 1999.
I would be remiss if I did not thank all the Shorthorn breeders who have made this all possible through their advertising. Thanks also goes out to anyone who provided information and/ or articles for us to share in the magazine. None of it would have happened without your support. I am very grateful!
If there is anyone who has any interest in taking over the production of The Canadian Shorthorn Report I would urge them to contact me and we can discuss it further. I hope this happens as I don’t want this magazine to just fade into the sunset.
Since making my decision to retire from producing this magazine, it feels more right with each passing day. I am
convinced that this is the right decision for me to make and I am more than willing to turn this magazine over to someone else. Give me a call or email and let’s talk. Nothing would please me more if I could announce who was taking over as editor in the next issue.

As I write my last report to Canadian Shorthorn Association (CSA) members for 2022, I hope that your Christmas holiday season was a good one, celebrated with family and friends.
January 1st is fast approaching and like many, I naturally reflect back on the past year which has seen some very tumultuous times but yet the past year has been good for Shorthorn members with successful sales and shows. Our memberships and registry have seen modest growth and starting in spring, we saw strong demand for Shorthorn bulls. 2022 saw the largest number of bulls on offer and sold in many years. This momentum carried through to the fall sales of Shorthorn females and embryo lots in sales across the country. My count was close to over 400 Shorthorns in these sales. That does not include private treaty sales. Sellers and buyers ranged in a wide spectrum from well-established breeders to brand new Shorthorn breeders that are having successful sales but also buying good females to build their herds.
This bodes very well for Shorthorns to maintain their position to gain more share of a very competitive beef market. Shorthorn and all breed shows across Canada came back very strong this year and I was very happy to see the return of the Royal in Toronto and their 100th Anniversary celebration. It is very gratifying to see that as shows returned, participants also returned to pre-covid numbers. This proves something that I have always believed, that the people in the cattle industry are the most resilient group of people in the country.
As we move into 2023 our Juniors are excited to be heading to the Junior Leadership Forum February 4th and 5th
By Ray Armbrusterin Calgary, Alberta - we are sure that it will be a great learning event. The Canadian Shorthorn Association annual general meeting will be held in Ottawa, (Kanata) Ontario from May 25-28 at the Holiday Inn and Suites, and Manitoba will be the place for the ‘Nationals’ with the Canadian Junior Shorthorn Show being held in Carmen August 11-13 and the National Show slated for AG-EX in Brandon in October. Stay tuned to the website and our social media channels for details as they develop.
There is a saying “that nothing lasts forever” and I regret to inform you that we have to say farewell to Belinda Wagner. Belinda has served CSA for over 20 years as our official Secretary/Treasurer. I want to also recognize her generous volunteer work for the Association and her commitment in working with and mentoring our Junior programs. In my time working with Belinda, I have come to recognize that her work and service was of the highest integrity. So, on behalf of all CSA members past and present we say Thank You and wish you the very best in the future.
With that, we will be starting a new chapter or era. I can tell you that the CSA board has worked hard and we are pleased to announce that someone you all know, Shayla Chappell, will be adding to her duties of Registry and Member services. She will also serve as Office Manager, along with secretarial duties and involvement with the Junior program. We all welcome Shayla to her expanded role with CSA.
For now, enjoy the good old-fashioned Canadian winter. All the Best to Everyone in The New Year!!

Thank you to the Canadian Shorthorn Association for the beautiful clock. It will be a great reminder of the many enjoyable years working for the members, events attended and people met from across the country. ~Belinda

The Annual General Meeting of THE CANADIAN SHORTHORN ASSOCIATION will be held SATURDAY, MAY 27, 2023 at the HOLIDAY INN & SUITES 101 Kanata Avenue, Kanata, ON K2T 1E6 (613)271-3057
The following article was written by Bert Pepper who was the Secretary-Manager of the Canadian Shorthorn Association and it was published in the Canadian Shorthorn News in 1975. This was shortly following the introduction of the graded up (or Appendix registry as it is now known as) by the CSA board. At this time, the CSA board was dealing with Shorthorn members and registrations falling very quickly and the introduction of the Graded Up registry was an attempt to bring many of the cattle with Shorthorn influence back into the Shorthorn fold. Almost 50 years have passed since this was written and it speaks truth today as it did back then. This article was sent to us to be reprinted in this breed magazine to remind Shorthorn breeders that our two registries were designed to work together to build a better breed and to expand the genetics available to all breeders.
With the formation of a new Graded Up Herd Book of the Canadian Shorthorn Association comes the greatest opportunity in the history of Canadian Shorthorns. Your name might be different than the three famous founders of the breed used in the above headline but the opportunity is the same. You are now given the challenge of building and breeding a superior Canadian Shorthorn.
Just open your minds, roll up your shirt sleeves and go to work.
Today’s modern Shorthorn inventor has a wide variety of genetic material to work with. He has carcass data, scanogram, R.O.P., beef data, calving intervals, calving ease, milk production and all the breeds of cattle in the world to work with. Oh yes, and when you find the greatest Canadian Shorthorn ever created, you have Artificial Insemination and Ova Transplants to rapidly multiply their kind.
Our biggest hang-up to progress in the past has been rules, regulations and conformity. Nothing truly great has ever been accomplished by doing exactly what
everyone else has done. Now is your opportunity to be a revolutionary. If you have an idea of how to produce a superior Shorthorn, go to it and we will do our best to help you.
I believe that given the opportunity, there is in our midst a Shorthorn breeder, and possibly many breeders, that have the ability and the desire to make this great old breed into the hottest item in the cattle market. You are not just limited to the creation of an improved beef type animal that will be the answer to today’s price squeeze, but also the creation of a superior dairy animal. Come on Dual Purpose Shorthorn breeders, let’s see you produce a line of Shorthorns that will knock the spots off the Black and Whites. Remember anything is possible, all you need is the desire and a little luck. You have the tools at your disposal.
What I am asking you to do is not an easy task, or a fool proof get rich scheme, but I am sure it can be done. Remember today is the first day in the rest of your life Mr. Shorthorn breeder, so begin your earthshaking plans now.
Here’s How - We do ask that you record your new creation in our Graded-Up Herd Book beginning with your ½ Shorthorn crosses. Registered status in this herd book is reached at the 7/8 level for females and the 15/16 level for males. When your Shorthorns reach registered status, they are eligible to participate in sales and shows, the same as the Shorthorns in the closed Herd Book.
There are many top-quality grade Shorthorn herds in Canada and these grade Shorthorn females are eligible to be recorded at the 3/4 level, subject to inspection. With the allowing of over-aged animals to be recorded or registered this year, there are many grade herds that have quite a large percentage of their herd eligible to be registered in the Graded-Up Herd Book.
We ask you to go visit your neighbors that have these grade Shorthorn herds and discuss these opportunities with them. You may also be surprised at the quality to be found in some of these herds.
So, as Comedian Red Skelton would say, “Good Luck and God Bless!”
Ronald Charles Burniston Shelley of Gorrie, ON passed away Sunday, October 23, 2022, in his 89th year. Husband of Carol (Wright) Shelley. Father of Mr. & Mrs. Steven Shelley of Alberta, Diane & John Scherer of Guelph, and Sandra-Lynn Shelley of New Hamburg, and grandfather of Nicole.
Ron was a Shorthorn cattle breeder for over 70 years starting in Union Ontario/Elgin County 4-H beef club in 1946, then became a Junior Farmers member.
Ron and his wife Carol their children Steven, Diane and Sandra-Lynn raised Shorthorns under the prefix of Kettleview
Shorthorns. In 1972 Ron moved his family and his beloved Shorthorn to Gorrie, Ontario and still had cattle at his death.
Ron was a member and the president twice of Grey Bruce Perth Huron Shorthorn Club. Ron was also a member and was on the board of the Ontario Shorthorn Club.
Ron was the 4th generation to raise Shorthorn. Ron could hear the name of the sire and dam and would be able to tell you their sires and bloodlines all the way back.
Ron was a Ringman and Auctioneer at the Erin Shorthorn Sale where he had the privilege of selling the highest priced heifer ever GREENROW COUNTESS EMILINE.
Most people only knew Ron as "The Shorthorn Breeder" but that was only a
part of Ron life. Ron was an avid hunter and angler, played saxophone, coached Pee Wee hockey, refereed hockey and loved to curl. He was a founding member of Wallace Optimist Club. Ron was a Very Worshipful Brother with the Fordwich Masonic Lodge.
Ron loved to tell stories and was a real jokester right to the end.
Ron, to the end, was trying to track down some of the real old Shorthorn bull semen like Magalong Super Flag and Scottsdale bulls, etc. semen so his children could continue that breeding in his herd. If anyone has any of that old bull semen kicking around, please email his family at Kettleview.Farms@hotmail.com

New Year! New Optimism!
We hear this phrase a lot. When it’s a new year, everyone is talking about setting new resolutions and getting energized for what’s ahead. However, what if that is not the way you are feeling entering 2023? Is something keeping you from having that fresh new perspective and exhilaration?
Is it stress experienced from the season, your role, or something more? Could you be experiencing burnout, influencing your daily routine, relationships, and mindset? Production agriculture is not for the faint at heart. The schedule, the responsibility, and the uncertainty associated with it can lead to burnout.
As we move into another busy year, I wanted to share with you some information I recently read about burnout and ways to mitigate it by relating the author’s thoughts to our agricultural lifestyle. The author described three types of burnout – overload, under-challenged, and neglect.
One can experience overload burnout when working harder and more uncontrollably to accomplish success at the expense of their health and personal life. This is the type of burnout we often think of when we feel exhausted or see others working at a pace they cannot sustain. They become mentally and physically exhausted. When experiencing overload burnout, we complain that there are never enough hours in the day to get our work done, how tired we are, and how we work longer hours than others.
We overlook our own needs to fulfill work demands and jeopardize our well-being. Working non-stop may appear to be what we need to do to accomplish everything to our satisfaction, yet, putting everything important on the back burner - like attending our child’s sports game or canceling doctor’s appointments sets us up for burnout. In agriculture, it can be hard to separate ourselves from our daily routine. If you wake up thinking about work, go to sleep thinking about work, and dream about work-related issues, your mind can never recharge and refuel.
• Develop self-regulation skills to shift your mindset from negative self-talk to positive outcomes. Instead of saying, “I have to feed the cattle today, shift to saying, I get to be a caretaker of livestock today.”
• Aim to define your self-worth apart from your profession. What roles and identities impact your self-worth – family man, community leader, or helpful friend/neighbor?
• Invest your time in areas outside your work. Is there something you can get involved in that will create a new sense of freedom and inspiration?
In agriculture, it’s hard to imagine experiencing burnout from being under-challenged, but it occurs when your role does not stimulate you. You feel like your work is monotonous and repetitive or that you are unappreciated. Cattle need to be fed every day, the irrigation pumps checked, etc. Do you find yourself in a role where your job involves continuous routines? A person responds to this type of burnout through avoidance –they suppress their thoughts and ideas and isolate themselves from interaction with others or projects. The thought of – “I’m just going to do my job but not care,” or “Why would I put in any extra effort, I do the same thing every day, and no one recognizes my efforts.”
• Feeling under-whelmed makes it hard to care about your accomplishments. Set a goal to learn a new skill or study a new topic, for example, learning more about rotational grazing, marketing, or enhancing welding skills? Taking strides towards something that can refuel your focus can allow you to find new value in your role.
In this type of burnout, you feel helpless in the face of challenge. You feel frustrated or uncertain trying to keep up with the demands of your role. You struggle to find solutions to situations, even when situations exist. You struggle to make a positive difference. When things don’t turn out as they should, you shut down, cease trying, and give up. The little things begin to annoy you. You become more negative and create more conflict. Getting up to tackle another day can feel demoralizing.
• Regain control over your role and actions. Learn to say “No” when your plate is overflowing. In agriculture, this is challenging to do. We help others in need, feel guilty saying we don’t have time, and don’t want to find ways to outsource or delegate our work because we feel it’s our responsibility to do it all.
• Have you heard the saying, “find someone to do the $10/hour jobs so that you can do the $100/hour jobs?” Identify situations where you feel a higher sense of resentment; this signals that you need to set stronger boundaries on your time and commitments.
• Try this activity - Conduct an 80/20 analysis and determine what 20% of tasks or projects give you 80% of the results at work. Once you have these results, you can give the most time and energy to the things that matter most.
Research shows that people don’t burn out similarly and recognizing the signs of burnout can be difficult. Burnout is more than a few bad days. It affects our lifestyle, our work, and our relationships. Focus on finding solutions to the challenges you are experiencing, so you can look forward to a year of optimism and achievements or take the time to visit with a professional about finding balance in your life.

Well, another fall show and sale season has come to an end. This means there are some exciting things to come in the following months.
Our board hasn’t had a lot going on lately as we have all been busy with finals and work. But what we have been doing is planning, something not everyone loves but it gets us excited regardless.
February 4th and 5th will see our annual Shorthorn Stars Junior Leadership Forum which is set to be held in Calgary, Alberta this year. It’s a chance for members to network and meet other youth with similar interests as well as hear from industry leaders – we hope to see a great turnout of junior members there.
Although it’s not our next event it’s been at the top of recent meeting agendas. We are incredibly pleased to announce that the 2023 Junior National Show will take place August 11-13 in Carman, Manitoba. We look forward to seeing everyone there. Keep an eye on our social media accounts through the coming months for more details and entry information.

Our nomination deadline for the board is coming up very soon with positions available across the country. The terms are for two years and start at the Junior show each summer. If you are interested in learning more about being on the board reach out to me or any of the other directors – we would love to chat with you about joining us in planning and executing events for our junior members. January 31st is the deadline. Email juniors@canadianshorthorn.com to indicate your interest. If there is more than one nomination per region elections may be held by mail-in ballot.
