Over the past month, we have been gathering your feedback through in-person events and an online survey. With your feedback, we have created guiding principles and some big idea concepts for the park.

The Big Ideas are just three potential ways to meet your design needs, fill system gaps, and create a new iconic destination for the City and County of Denver. We want your feedback today on how to create one preferred direction, which could be a combination of all three or other missing elements!

What is Park Hill Park?

Denver Parks and Recreation (DPR) Department is working with the community to convert a former golf course into a 155-acre public park in the heart of the city. The site will be redesigned as the largest addition to Denver’s park system in more than a century.

Park Hill Park

Park Hill Park is situated in the Northeast Park Hill Neighborhood of Denver. It will soon stand as the city’s fourth-largest open space, providing a vital new resource in an area long underserved by parks and greenways. This will be the largest addition to Denver’s park system in over a century!

Denver Regional Parks

A Denver regional park is generally an urban park that is 80 acres or larger in size and provides areas for large-scale features, large amounts of flexible or passive open space, picnic facilities, playgrounds, athletic fields, and restrooms. These large, destination parks have a major impact on the character of the City, breaking the grid system pattern, enhancing the environment with visual and physical relief, and reducing noise and pollution. There are ten regional parks in Denver. Park Hill Park will be the 11th!

Nature Runs Through big idea 1

A park dedicated to being immersed in nature through outdoor activities, observation, education, and nature-based play. This big idea is characterized by a large core of restored landscapes interwoven with a ribbon of destination water play

Colorado’s Front Door big idea 2 Cultural Core big idea 3

A park that offers a taste of the many adventure activities that our state has to offer, from rock climbing to zip lines to bike activities. This big idea is characterized by a series of adventure loops which bring visitors through the diverse landscapes of Colorado and a selection of exhilarating outdoor

A park that convenes and connects people through hosting community events, concerts, markets– while celebrating local artists and history. This big idea is characterized by large community gathering spaces located in the center of the site, including an amphitheater and a community and event space.

Building Blocks for a Great Park

The following will be considered to be included in all Big Ideas and the Preferred Framework.

Please note that what you are seeing today are just the Big Ideas! The final framework plan will include the necessary amenities and infrastructure to make a great park. The list below constitutes the details that will come in future. These are not all currently represented in the three Big Ideas, but the next level of detail will include all of them in the future!

Uses

The center of the park is largely dedicated to quiet natural spaces, with active uses concentrated on the periphery.

Water Nature

Ecosystem restoration and habitat enhancement drives many design moves.

Play Circulation

Primary circulation connects all key areas of the park, with a meandering form to encourage connection with nature.

Water is integrated throughout the center of the park, with water play, floodable meadows, and a re-shaped detention pond.

Play is concentrated in a destination interactive water play ribbon that is located in the center of the park.

Each big idea has a different approach to the uses, activities, nature, water, circulation, and play.

Uses

Active uses are concentrated on the northern and western edges of the park, leaving passive natural space near the neighborhoods.

Water Nature

A diverse selection of Colorado ecosystems are represented throughout the park.

A re-shaped detention pond accommodates adventure uses and is connected to floodable meadows that will cleanse runoff from the park before it enters the detention basin.

Play Circulation

Adventure-focused play is dispersed into multiple areas throughout the park.

The Colorado adventure loop is a continuous path that connects different adventure park uses throughout the park.

This big idea is characterized by large community gathering spaces located in the center of the site, including an amphitheater and a community and event space. Active community uses are concentrated in the center of the site, with some active uses along the edges.

Water Nature

Nature is designed to buffer the central community spaces from Colorado Blvd, creating a secluded central gathering place.

Play Circulation

All major trails converge at the center of the site, connecting the Community and Event Space with the 303 Artway.

A treatment train is integrated to connect enhanced wetlands to the existing detention pond.

A destination adventure playground is integrated with the detention pond area. Smaller play areas are integrated at the lower end of the site to serve the neighborhood.
