Raising Awareness About Eating Disorders: Flutters Of Hope

issues since she was a teen. Throughout the years I have met so many people with eating disorders or parents and friends who know someone with one. Assemblywoman Woerner: Assembly Budget Proposal Addresses Priority Issues

SARATOGA COUNTY –

Assemblywoman Carrie Woerner, D-Round Lake, this week released a statement regarding the Assembly budget proposal.

“I applaud the amendments that the Assembly proposal is making to the executive’s plan regarding housing,” Woerner said.” We don’t need to solve our state’s housing crisis by running roughshod over local zoning laws. The Assembly’s plan would

stimulate housing growth by working with municipalities, not dictating what must be done.”

Specifically, the proposal provides $500 million in total funding for cities, towns and villages in need of housing. Municipalities would receive initial payments for submitting a housing plan and secondary payments once they meet housing growth targets within the target period starting Jan. 1, 2024,

Woerner said.

“Through my annual survey, constituents told me that their highest priorities in the budget were healthcare and education (K-12), followed closely by environment, housing, workforce development, and infrastructure,” Woerner added. “While there are some things in the Assembly budget proposal that my constituents and I do not support, the overall proposed spending

plan addresses the funding priorities of the communities I represent.”

The Assembly’s proposal includes a 10% increase in Medicaid funding for nursing homes and other long-term care facilities, coupled with additional funding for distressed nursing homes. It also proposes significant investments in the Environmental Protection Fund, including farmland and open space

conservation, in water and sewer infrastructure, and in workforce development programs.

Tonko Announces Relaunch of Addiction,

Treatment, and Recovery Caucus

SARATOGA COUNTY

— Today Congressman Paul Tonko, who represents Saratoga County in the 20th Congressional District, along with Ohio congressman Dave Joyce announced the relaunch of the Addiction, Treatment, and Recovery Caucus for the 118th Congress. The Congressmen will serve as co-chairs of the Caucus, which is a bipartisan group of legislators committed to advancing bipartisan solutions to the country’s multifaceted addiction crisis.

“There isn’t a community in our nation that has not been touched by the overdose epidemic,” said Tonko, D-Amsterdam, said in a statement. “While I am deeply proud of the strides we’ve made to address the disease of addiction with laws like my Mainstreaming Addiction Treatment Act, far more work lies ahead. It is my

hope that the ATR Caucus will continue to serve as a forum to convene Members who are serious about eliminating barriers to treatment, and saving lives. I’m grateful to have a strong partner in Rep. Joyce as we work to put a stop to this crisis and support our loved ones and our communities.”

The Addiction, Treatment, and Recovery Caucus is the first and longest running Congressional caucus that recognizes addiction as a disease. The Caucus is comprised of more than 50 Members of Congress from both sides of the aisle. This Congress, the Caucus will serve as a clearinghouse for legislation aimed at expanding access to treatment for addiction, supporting Americans recovering from the illness, and bolstering the health workforce on the frontlines of the addiction crisis.

Parking Spaces, Sacred Places: Collamer Lot to Install Paid Parking

SARATOGA SPRINGS –Parking spaces make for sacred places during the Spa City’s heaviest trafficked times, inspiring motorists to navigate a busy Broadway seeking a free spot of convenience to temporarily stash their vehicle.

The Collamer lot, as it is often referred to, stands just north of City Hall and for several decades has hidden amid the camouflage of plain sight, a welcome respite for wheeled roadsters yearning for rapid runs to any one of the many fine sidewalk coffeehouses lining main street or aid in the undertaking of some quick storefront shopping, alike.

With quiet suddenness one recent morning, the lot, long unbothered save for a two-hour parking limitation, was discovered in an altered state festooned with a proliferation of tall metal poles upon which were posted signs warning all who enter: Private Parking. All Others Will Be Towed. Of course, the new, mammoth city parking structure welcoming motorists stands a mere few dozen yards away. But, still.

So, what gives?

As it turns out, the city of Saratoga Springs, which owned the lot, sold it about 16 months ago to Algonquin LLC for approximately $1.2 million.

“They finally, I am told, exercised their control over it,” said Saratoga Springs City Attorney Tony Izzo, when asked about it. “It was a situation where they needed to do that, because the public was essentially still viewing it as a public parking lot. Now that they’ve put the signs up, it should be very clear to the public that it’s a private parking lot.”

Izzo said there were some discussions with the owner’s attorneys regarding whether or not the city might subsequently lease a part of the lot, but that did not happen. “The city wanted to sell it and be done with it.”

The space had once sited the Pavilion Hotel – built in 1819 and felled by a fire in the 1840s. In 1857, the First Presbyterian Church was built atop the lot at a cost of $3,000 and supplemented with an organ to provide the public “the pleasure of hearing its tone and power,” according to published reports of the time.

The church stood for 119 years, itself destroyed by a fire

of suspicious origin in the predawn hours of the last Thursday of January 1976. Flames from the blaze shot up as high as 200 feet according to eyewitnesses and was first discovered by then-23-yearold Saratoga Springs patrolman Frank Max. Max, now 70 years of age and still living locally, said when contacted for this article last week, that he vaguely remembers seeing smoke coming from the building while he was walking his beat. As a result of the fire, three policemen and a firefighter were injured and 60 residents of the adjacent Algonquin apartment house and the Collamer building were evacuated from the safety of their abodes.

Nearly a decade ago, the parcel was to be coupled with a land sale in an acquisition that

sought to develop an east side fire station. And in 2008, the city contemplated various proposals from three different development groups that included the sale of the so-called Collamer and High Rock lots in exchange for a new public safety facility, a parking garage, retail/residential buildings and potentially a citywide paid parking system. None of the proposals ultimately came to fruition.

A plaque fixed to a stone outside the building told the history of the church, although that plaque has gone missing and today only a naked stone remains.

More changes are planned for the lot in the future. A site plan filed with the city of Saratoga Springs last September calls for a proposed mixed-use project

to include approximately 4,000 sq. ft. commercial space and 112 residential units on the upper floors. The proposed project is titled Algonquin Properties Re-Development. The applicant is The Algonquin, LLC, of Monsey, N.Y.

There are also plans for a portion of the parking area of the lot itself.

“We’ve rented a number of the spaces to a number of people in the Collamer (building) and at City Hall,” says Will Borchers, manager at the Algonquin. “In a couple of weeks, we’re also going to implement a paid parking system - by the hour, or by the day.” That system will be using an app and a QR code and will feature somewhere around three dozen spaces.

Election 2023: City GOP Endorses Democrat for Public Safety

Continued from front page...

Works and Dillon Moran for Commissioner of Accounts. Additionally, Gordon Boyd was endorsed by the committee as Supervisor to represent the city at the county level.

This week, the Saratoga Springs Republican Committee announced their nomination of “three strong candidates,” said city GOP Chairman Mike Brandi. “While the current City Council and Democratic Committee consume themselves with politics and petty squabbles, the Saratoga Springs Republican Committee remains focused on what really matters: delivering candidates who will provide effective, competent, and transparent government for the residents of Saratoga Springs.”

The endorsed candidates are: John Safford for Mayor, Matt Veitch – running for reelection to a ninth term as County Supervisor, and Tim Coll for Public Safety.

Safford, a Vietnam Veteran and small-business entrepreneur, was previously unsuccessful in a 2015 bid to unseat incumbent

Mayor Joanne Yepsen and in his 2021 run for Supervisor.

Veitch has served as Supervisor since 2008, advocating for the city of Saratoga Springs at the county level.

Coll, who worked as a Special Agent of the FBI for 30 years, is seeking the position of Commissioner of Public Safety. Coll received the unanimous endorsement of the Saratoga Springs Republican Committee. He is also a registered Democrat.

“Tim Coll is indisputably qualified for this position,” said Chairman Brandi, adding that Coll will bring decades of law enforcement and leadership experience with the FBI to “repair and restore the toxic environment that is poisoning the public safety department under the current Commissioner… the Committee is proud to put politics aside to support a candidate as qualified and motivated to serve our city as Tim is.”

Coll says he decided to run because over concerns about “the potential impact of the mismanagement that currently plagues the Public Safety

Department.” Coll said after being “denied the opportunity to address the full Democratic Committee for their support,” he sought the endorsement of city Republican leadership.

“While I am a registered Democrat, I refuse to be drawn into the tribalism of Democrats vs. Republicans.”

Coll’s campaign manager is Jane Weihe, a past chair of Saratoga Springs Democratic Committee. Weihe was previously unsuccessful in her bid as city Finance Commissioner in 2007 and in a mayoral run in 1987. She is married to local political blogger John Kaufman. Coll said he plans on being on the November ballot as a Democrat with GOP endorsement.

The City Council is comprised of five councilmembers – one mayor and four commissioners. Saratoga Springs is additionally represented at the county by two supervisors. Elections for all seven seats are held every two years.

In addition to the six candidates endorsed by the city Democratic Committee overall and the three thus far nominated

by the city Republican Committee, former city Finance Commissioner Michele Madigan recently announced she will be vying for a seat as Saratoga County Supervisor, and former Public Safety Commissioner Chris Mathiesen said he will run for Mayor. All potential candidates will now be soliciting signatures in order participate in the election, making for a busy Primary and Election season in Saratoga Springs.

The 2023 Election Cycle Calendar points to Primary Elections, where applicable, on June 27, with Early Voting June 17-25. The General Election will be held Nov. 7, with Early Voting Oct. 28-Nov. 5. This year, an election will be held in Saratoga Springs for all five City Council seats – that is, the mayor and four commissioners, as well as both Supervisor positions. Countywide, registered Republican make up approximately 35.8% of all registered voters, with Democrats charting 29.2% and “blanks” - or registered voters not enrolled in any partyaccounting for 27.6%.

In the city of Saratoga Springs, that balance shifts, with SARATOGA SPRINGS - Less than 15 months have passed since the start of their respective two-year terms, and the next vote-casting day is scheduled to take place more than 33 weeks away.

Cue the candidates for the November 2023 election.

Last month, the Saratoga Springs Democratic Committee announced their endorsed slate of candidates for this year’s city election. This week, the Saratoga Springs Republican Committee followed suit.

The Democratic Committee endorsed each of the five current City Council members – all of whom are Democrats. Those incumbents are: Ron Kim for Mayor, Minita Sanghvi for Commissioner of Finance, Jim Montagnino for Commissioner of Public Safety, Jason Golub for Commissioner of Public Works and Dillon Moran for Commissioner of Accounts. Additionally, Gordon Boyd was endorsed by the committee as Supervisor to represent the city at the county level.

PDT Market Preparing To Open

In Downtown Saratoga Springs

SARATOGA SPRINGS

— PDT Market, a specialty grocery store, is preparing to open in downtown Saratoga Springs in the coming weeks.

PDT Market is located at 55 Railroad Place, taking over the former Price Chopper location. The store has a wide variety of offerings, selling typical grocery items in addition to offering deli, seafood, and produce areas. PDT also offers a hot bar, a make-your-own charcuterie station, and a full-service bar, and will sell grab-and-go

foods, flowers, personal items, and much more.

Adam Foti, owner of PDT, said it is “super exciting” to be nearing an opening date.

“I’ve been in here while they’ve been finishing all the shelves and stuff, but just to see what they’re doing on the shelves, and the signage up and everything, is beyond exciting,” said Foti. “It’s such a labor of love that I’m so passionate about, that it’s just so exciting to see everything here.”

PDT’s kitchen and bar will also offer limited menus, and

cooking classes will be offered near the bar area. There are tables throughout, allowing spaces for people to sit and eat or have a drink. The bar area can also be rented out for private events.

“It’s exciting that people can sort of choose their own adventure, in a way,” Foti said. “Do you want to head toward the bar? Do you need to go shopping, because you’re looking for something specific on a shelf?”

PDT has developed its own coffee and jams that will be for sale. Foti said they are hoping to work with other local businesses, including the Schuylerville-based King Brothers Dairy.

Foti said the idea behind PDT’s wide variety of offerings is to “make your life easier,” offering a convenient space where customers can find a range of products and services.

“There’s so many different things you can do here, that you can experience it in all types of ways,” said Foti. “Our idea is that we want to make your life easier. … The idea is, no matter what you want to do, we sort of have that for you.”

In this new role, Ms. D’Angelico will be responsible for day-to-day management of the

Brooklyn-Based Markstone Group Seeks To Develop Senior Living Community In Wilton

WILTON — Brooklyn-based developers The Markstone Group have proposed construction of an age 55-plus senior housing community on Route 50 in Wilton.

The community would have 390 units across three buildings at 4029 Route 50, according to minutes from the Town of Wilton Planning Board’s January meeting. The location is currently occupied by The Christmas Gift Shop.

Two of the buildings would be L-shaped and approximately 39,000 square feet, with a third, longer building of approximately 42,000 square feet set back from the other two. The buildings would each be four stories and have 130 units, according to the meeting minutes.

The project would be Markstone’s second senior living community in the Capital Region. Hamilton Parc, another adult living community, currently is under construction in Guilderland. Jacob Freund, COO of The Markstone Group, said on Monday that the

company was drawn to the area after seeing a need for such facilities.

“We researched and we saw there’s a big, big need for quality senior living, so we threw ourselves into the market,” said Freund. “There’s nothing built that’s affordable, nice, and up-to-date, with amenities, services, the whole nine yards. That’s exactly what we’re doing. We’re trying to bring a product to the market that’s going to be affordable and beautiful.”

The group is proposing indoor amenities in the third building, including an exercise room, meeting rooms, game rooms, and a kitchenette. They have also proposed amenities such as basketball, pickleball, and tennis courts, as well as a putting green, community gardens, and a dog park, according to the meeting minutes.

Rent prices have not yet been determined, with Freund saying Monday the company is still going through the entitlement process. The community is proposed to have

boulevard access off of Route 50, and would feature a center courtyard with parking in addition to parking lots on the side and in back of each building, according to the meeting minutes.

Freund said that it is important to Markstone to “make it work” for potential residents.

“It’s never too late to live a life. We want them to have quality living,” said Freund. “It’s crucial here in people’s lives, and it’s important that they have quality time with each other.”

The project will be presented to the Town of Wilton Zoning Board of Appeals on March 23, seeking approval of a variance for the occupied height of the buildings. A maximum of 55 feet is allowed, but the top 20 feet must be unoccupied, leaving 35 feet occupied. The plans call for the buildings to be within the maximum height allowed, but over the allowed amount of occupied space, according to the minutes from the Wilton Town Board’s meeting on Feb. 2.

How Your Will Controls Your Assets After You Pass Away

The Difference Between Probate and Non-Probate Assets

to the named beneficiary upon your death, regardless of what your Will says.

People sometimes come to me unsure about the distinction between probate and nonprobate assets. The primary distinction is that probate assets are considered to be within your probate estate and therefore are controlled by the terms of your Will. Non-probate assets are not considered to be within your probate estate and therefore are not controlled by the terms of your Will.

In order to better understand the distinction, I often describe assets as falling into one of three different baskets.

ASSET BASKET NUMBER

ONE: Asset basket number one includes all the assets you have which are titled in your name only. They are not jointly held with anyone else and they are not payable to a named beneficiary in the event that you pass away.

ASSET BASKET NUMBER

TWO: Asset basket number two includes all the assets that you have which are jointly held with someone else. These assets generally will automatically pass on to the other joint owner upon your death.

ASSET BASKET NUMBER

THREE: Asset basket number three includes all the assets you have which are payable to a named beneficiary outside of your Will. These assets will pass

These distinctions are important because your Will only controls the assets in basket number one. Examples of basket number one assets includes things such as: a car titled just in your name, stock which is only held by you, and any bank account that you have not titled in any way with someone else. Basket one assets are probate assets.

Examples of basket two assets include things such as: a home you own jointly with your spouse, a bank account you have jointly with a parent, and jointly held securities. None of these assets will be controlled by the terms of your Will if you die and are survived by your joint asset owner. Basket two assets are non-probate assets.

Examples of basket three assets include things such as: life insurance payable to a specific person or persons, retirement accounts (like an IRA or 401k) payable to a specific person or persons, and anything you have in a Trust – when the trust provisions do not make the assets payable to your estate upon your passing (which they generally do not). Basket three assets are non-probate assets.

Understanding these distinctions are critical to proper estate planning. If you meet with an attorney to discuss drafting estate planning documents like Wills and/or Trusts, you must make clear to that attorney exactly what assets you have and which basket they fall into.

People sometimes make the mistake of thinking that their Will can override the nonprobate asset character of a basket two or basket three asset. For example, they may think that regardless of who they list as a beneficiary on their IRA, if their Will leaves all their assets to their

spouse, then their spouse will receive all their assets of any type. This is not true. If an asset falls in basket number two and is joint with someone other than their spouse, then that joint owner will receive that asset upon their death. As an additional example, if an IRA is payable to someone other than their spouse, then that other person will receive that IRA upon their death.

It is critical as part of your estate planning to review the status of all your assets. To the extent you own anything jointly with someone else, you need to confirm who that joint owner is. To the extent you own anything payable to a named beneficiary, you need to confirm that the beneficiary listed is the one you wish to receive that asset upon your passing.

As you can imagine, sometimes people lose track of the status of their basket two or basket three assets. For example, they may have forgotten that the designated their four children as the beneficiaries of their IRA, even after they had a falling out with one of the children and intended to remove them as a beneficiary. These types of mistakes can lead to significant assets going to beneficiaries who should not ideally receive them.

If you are getting ready to consider estate planning, you should get together a list of your assets and determine which of the three baskets each asset falls into. That information will be invaluable in working with a professional to develop a plan that is right for you.

Ballston Spa High School Robotics Team Prepares for Competition

BALLSTON SPA — The Ballston Spa Central School District’s FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) Team 3044 is finishing their build season and will compete in the FIRST Robotics Finger Lakes Regional Tournament on March 16-18 at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT).

They will then compete in the New York Tech Valley Regional Competition which will be held March 29 to April 1 at MVP Arena in Albany.

The FIRST Robotics Competition season kicked off in early January when the 2023 Charged Up Challenge presented by Haas Game Animation

was released. In this year’s competition, the FIRST Robotics Competition teams are inspired to see the potential of energy storage in a new light as they compete to charge up their communities. Under strict rules, limited time and resources, teams of students are challenged through the FIRST Robotics Competition to raise funds, design a team “brand,” hone teamwork skills and build and program industrial-size robots to play a difficult field game against like-minded competitors.

The program is as close to realworld engineering as a student can get. Volunteer professional mentors lend their time and talents to guide each team.

In addition to working on their robot for the 2023 season, FRC Team 3044 provided mentorship to FIRST Lego League Challenge (FLL) Teams and FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) Teams from Ballston Spa Central School District.

The Ballston Spa Central School District is able to offer opportunities in robotics to students through the support of sponsors including Ballston Spa National Bank, GlobalFoundries/Town of Malta Foundation, Eastern Heating & Cooling, Inc., HMS Agency, Bechtel Foundation, Generations Auto Repair, Aquatic Development Group and Coffee Planet.

Saratoga Regional YMCA launches 2023 Annual Campaign with $400,000 goal

that chance before, or maybe a chance to participate in youth sports programming that this made possible,” Meyers said. “This is why the Y is here. This is why we’re here in the community, and it is this annual campaign that makes it possible for us to provide these programs to everybody in the community, regardless of their ability to pay.”

MALTA — The Saratoga Regional YMCA officially began its 2023 Annual Campaign on Monday, with the goal of raising $400,000 to help ensure their services are available to all.

The campaign was launched at the Malta YMCA, and featured Saratoga Regional YMCA CEO Scott Clark and Saratoga Regional YMCA Board of Directors member Allison Meyers. Children from the Malta YMCA’s childcare center were also on hand to help kick off the campaign.

Clark said this was a great fit due to the importance of providing childcare services. The Saratoga Regional YMCA provides early learning, beforeand after-school, and preschool

programs.

“Childcare is an essential part of what is needed every day for parents to be able to work, but also develop these kids so they can grow, learn, and thrive as they move on and prepare for kindergarten and beyond,” said Clark. “The Y served last year over 1,500 kids in our childcare program, and currently is seeing about 700 children a day in childcare.”

The YMCA raised over $650,000 last year, Meyers said, emphasizing that this money helps provide opportunities to those who may not be able to afford it.

“It may have been a chance for their child to go to summer camp when they’ve never had

The kids sang ‘You’ve Got a Friend In Me’ by Randy Newman, and spoke about their favorite parts of the YMCA, with many saying they enjoy time with their teachers and friends. Clark said the song was fitting, saying the YMCA provides “that opportunity for friendship.”

“They’re staying here, spending time with their teachers, developing friendships, learning how to play, learning hopefully about the Y’s values,” said Clark.

Clark said the YMCA is “so proud” of their goal to never turn anyone away based on their ability or inability to pay for services.

“It is my hope that together, we can make an even greater impact on the health and wellness of our community in 2023 and beyond,” added Meyers.

Waterford-Halfmoon

Students And Staff Launch Shoe Donation Drive

WATERFORD —

Throughout the month of March, the Waterford-Halfmoon Union Free School District is participating in a kindness project to help make the community and the world a better place. While the district is organizing a series of small acts of kindness that will be highlighted throughout the month, the entire school community is coming together for a shoe donation drive to help underprivileged children in Costa Rica and Africa.

The goal: collect 5,000 pairs of shoes in 15 days.

“We are working diligently to create and support a culture of kindness in our school district, and we want our students to understand how their actions, regardless of size, can have an

impact on the world around them,” said Superintendent Michael Healey. “Our message to our students is we can make a difference together as long as we continue to work together. We hope their call to action with this shoe drive will help motivate others to be kind and give back where they can.”

The Kindness Month project was created following an assembly sponsored by the Parent Teacher Organization with Think Kindness founder Brian Williams. Students learned about all the work Brian has done around the world, including donating more than 300,000 pairs of shoes to schoolaged children in communities of need. As part of the assembly, Brian challenged students to

participate in the 15 Days of Kindness campaign.

Students, family, friends, and community members have been asked to clean out their closets and spare rooms for sneakers that they can donate. Every pair of sneakers collected will be packaged and delivered to orphanages in Costa Rica and Africa.

On Saturday, March 11, the Waterford-Halfmoon Parent Teacher Organization is hosting a shoe collection on the WHUFSD campus at 125 Middletown Road, Waterford. The drive will take place from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Anyone interested in donating shoes is invited to come to help support the students and help them reach their goal.

Today is St. Patrick’s Day. Many of us have traditional St. Patrick Day practices that we have carried over either from family or have created over the years. The holiday is honored in myriad of ways around the world, ranging from the preparation of classic Irish food like Irish Potato Pie, or the classic Corned Beef and Cabbage, to adorning homes with clever green-and-gold decorations, and even making leprechaun traps. Though the festivities have changed over the centuries, St. Patrick’s Day’s traditions still showcase much of what makes Irish culture so unique. What will bring you luck? We can hope a little luck of the Irish rubs off on us when we partake in them. We think of leprechauns’ pots of gold at the end of the rainbow, pints of Guinness, bagpipers marching, and symbols like fourleaf clovers. Originally a religious feast honoring the patron saint of Ireland, St. Patrick’s Day has turned into a day to celebrate all things Irish. Surprisingly, the way the holiday is celebrated in Ireland looks a little different, as some of the customs we associate with it are actually Irish American traditions. But either way, we can hope a little luck of the Irish rubs

19 and Thursday, July 20 from 4-6pm at the SPAC School of the Arts studios located behind the National Museum of Dance. The final rehearsal will take place on the afternoon of Friday, July 21 in the SPAC Amphitheater. Performances will be held at 7:30pm on July 21 and at 2pm on July 22. Selected children and accompanying adults must adhere to protocols imposed by Saratoga Performing Arts Center and New York City Ballet related to COVID-19.

Scheduled for two performances on July 21 at 7:30 p.m. and

July 22 at 2 p.m., Firebird will be featured as part of a program that also includes Balanchine’s Swan Lake and Robbins’ Fancy Free. Ballston Spa’s Cole Evans Wins Boys Giant Slalom State Title

CANANDAIGUA — There’s a first time for everything, and Cole Evans’ first skiing victory couldn’t have come at a better time.

Evans, a junior at Ballston Spa, won the NYSPHSAA State Championship in the boys giant slalom event, posting a time of 2:14.10 across two runs at Bristol Mountain in Canandaigua. Evans said it was his first-ever race victory.

“I’ve had a number of podiums, but never a win,” said

Evans. “I was pretty surprised, honestly.”

Ballston Spa head coach Mitch Huff said it is “gratifying” to see the team’s athletes have success. Evans was first coached by Huff after he began competing in ski races at Gore Mountain at a young age.

“That’s the whole purpose of why we do it, is to see these kids have success within the high school races,” said Huff. “That’s what it’s all about for us.”

Entering states off a strong regular season, Evans said he was hoping to finish in the top 10 in both the giant slalom and

the slalom events.

“Obviously I’m very competitive, but I wasn’t going to be hard on myself at all,” said Evans. “Kind of just go out, have fun, see how I do.”

Evans started in 55th place out of 64 skiers, and his first run came in at 1:08.25, the top time for opening runs. Evans said his mindset for the runs was to “hold on and stay alive.”

“It was a pretty intense course, both with the weather conditions making the snow a little bit choppy, and just the length of the course being longer than any of the regular season

courses that we were doing,” Evans said. “But there’s not a lot going on in your head while you’re going, you’re just kind of blacked out, going on ‘go’ mode.”

Huff, who was assisting other Section 2 skiers, said he did not actually get to see either of Evans’ runs, instead hearing of his early lead from another coach.

“As I get the athlete in his skis, (the coach) goes, ‘Hey Mitch, do you have Live-Timing?’, which is the app that you have for results,” said Huff. “I radioed, ‘No, I’m putting so-and-so in their boots,’ and he says, ‘Well, Cole just won the first run.’”

Evans’ second run was even quicker than his first, finishing with a time of 1:05.85. With a combined time of 2:14.10, Evans beat out Queensbury’s Hudson Montgomery (2:14.94) for the giant slalom state championship. Evans also finished 10th in the slalom.

Evans said “it feels good” to be recognized, noting that he is not only receiving congratulations from his school and classmates, but that it is also helping highlight the sport of skiing.

“I’ve had a lot of classmates congratulate me, my school has recognized me,” said Evans. “It feels good for the sport in general, which doesn’t get a lot of attention.”

Huff, along with other district parents, helped revive the Ballston Spa skiing program in recent years. The program had success in the past, with the girls alpine ski team (combined with Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake)

winning back-to-back state titles in 2011 and 2012.

“It’s been a pleasant surprise to see how many kids have shown interest in it,” said Huff, who noted he is in his eighth season as the team’s coach. “It’s very gratifying for me to see those kids progress, and have success.”

Evans said he found the balance and team aspect of the high school team to be a great fit.

“Throughout the whole season, the guys on the team are my closest friends, really, because we’re in the weight room every day,” said Evans. “We’re just spending a lot of time together, so you build the social relationship while you’re doing the sport. I think it’s really good.”

whole second faster than the year before, her previous PR,” Preece said. “Then, all of a sudden, she ran a 40.31 at the state meet, she ran another second faster. She’s crushing it this year with getting that time down.”

Preece said it was a successful indoor season, noting that in addition to the recordsetting efforts of Hannah and Healey, the teams had strong seasons as a whole.

BHBL Grad Martin Takes Seventh At Tashkent Grand Slam

NEW YORK — A pair of athletes from Ballston Spa capped off strong indoor track seasons by setting school records at the NYSPHSAA Indoor Track Championships on March 4.

Isaiah Hannah finished third in the 55-meter hurdles at the indoor championships, with his time of 7.50 seconds setting a new Ballston Spa school record. Hannah advanced to the Nike Indoor Nationals over the weekend, placing eighth in both the 55-meter hurdles (7.66) and the 60-meter hurdles (8.17).

Ballston Spa head coach

Garry Preece said Hannah got off to a great start at the state meet, noting the senior is “one of the hardest-working kids” he has coached.

“He’s just constantly lifting, trying to get stronger, working on his starts,” said Preece. “That race, he attacked it. … It was very impressive.”

Harriet Healey placed seventh in the 300-meter (40.31), also setting her own school record. Preece said it was great

to see Healey reach a podium after competing on the Section 2 Intersectional relay team at the 2022 state meet.

Healey’s personal record in the 300-meter entering this season was 42.29 seconds, according to results posted on athletic.net. Preece said Healey cut her time down to 41.52 seconds at a meet in Boston earlier this year before setting the school record at the state meet.

“She ran in Boston this year, she ran 41.52. It was almost a

“We had our banquet (March 8), and I mentioned, if you go to MileSplit and you look at our team, you see PR after PR,” said Preece. “And we have such a young team. The girls have a very, very young team, and so do the boys.”

The Scotties’ boys and girls teams saw several highlights throughout the winter, including a sweep at the Viking Games at Hudson Valley Community College on Jan. 15. Preece said it was the first time both teams had won the invitational.

“It was a huge year,” Preece said. “There were a lot of great accomplishments.”

TASHKENT, UZBEKISTAN

— Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake High School graduate Hannah Martin took seventh place at the Tashkent Grand Slam, a main event on the International Judo Federation’s Judo Tour.

Martin, from the Jason Morris Judo Center (JMJC) in Glenville, jumped 8 spots on the 63kg world

ranking list up to #34. Hannah has only been back a little over a year since taking two years off to have a baby, and with this result qualifies for the World Championships in Doha, Qatar, May 7-13, 2023. The JMJC has now qualified a remarkable 37 athletes for the Worlds and are likely to qualify more for Doha.
