LIVING
Life can be described as a language as every word has meaning. Some are defined by dictionaries and others only can be understood through life experience. The truth is, not all words were created to be equal, humanity influenced, shaped and twisted this reality and an unequal world developed.
‘A journey undertaken by a group of people with a particular purpose, especially that of exploration, research, or war.’

The Expedition
Life was designed to be equal, loving and accepting but overtime humanities minds were corrupted, broken and twisted, leaving behind an unequal world.
Now we are left with the consequences, one of these being social injustice…
But what about Social justice?
This is the justice of distributing wealth, opportunities and privileges within a society.
But is this distribution executed in an equal manner?
There are more people that are victims of social injustice every single day than benefices of social justice outcomes, actions like hate crime, ageism, poverty and racial disparity are just some examples that are many people’s daily reality.
This makes one question if the umbrella term of social justice is still relevant in modern-day society or has the corruption of people’s minds advanced this-worldly term?
Camden. Many know Camden as a diverse multicultural town, but what it is lacking is further diversity within its population. Statistics show that London has the highest black population in the UK; 97% of the Black British population lives in Greater London, however despite
Camden being a multicultural town the BAME community only makes up 34% of its population. Within this there is a low black population.
In 1948, the change began. The Empire Windrush, a post war ship, embarked upon a journey that unknowingly would change Englands future. Although the ship brought people that wanted to help rebuild England after the war their arrival party wasn’t welcomed by many. The Caribbean was coming to England, passengers were expecting streets of gold, endless opportunities to work and better their lives but it wasn’t all that they first thought.
The Expedition aims to explore if their is any racial disparity within Camden and if so to create a sweet spot location. This location is to represent the journey taken by the black community during the mid 1900s, they were the minority crying out for help and support, but they didn’t always receive it, therefore I want to create a building that would have been ideal for them as a lifeline and refuge during this time and into modern day.
The Expedition will research and manipulate the route taken by the ship and the aim is to develop this into a mapped space that is a direct representation of the experience felt by those who first arrived to the UK. The aim is to understand why their reality did not match up to initial their expectations.

Construction process drawings, demostrating the shape of the form work and how the form mirrors the shape of the panels. Further development about how this can be constructred found that a good
way to attach the form work to the base platform is to pour 300mm of concrete around the edge of the building , with the steel form in place to provide a stronger structure to hold the weight of the panels.

Envelope system is a style that would incorporate the space frame rod structure but in a net style, the diagrams show how the structure would look in a 3D form as well as how it would look in the 2D
plan form. The frame work in this structure is now exposed therefore there will be cladding on the inner and outer skin of the building. The structure framing is demonstrated on the next diagram.
As there are glass panelled windows within this structure 2 styles that could be used for construction were researched. 1 being where the support has arms that support the glass and the other is that the support is within the panels. These 2 methods would be ideal for this project as there is a reliance on natural lighting for certain areas of the building.

modular units
The modulars are prefabricated self contained units. These can arrive to site in a usable form, furniture and other items can be added to them when on site. These are ideal for The Expedition as they are self sufficient, and the skin that covers the entirety of the building is only there as an overhead structure, therefore these units need to be able to control their internal environment seperately from the external facade.

EXPERIENCE
This diagram shows the multiple different ways that the building copes with any potential environmental issues. As the modulars are self contained those are the only aspects of the building that are temperature controlled. The remainder of the building is reliant on the sun and artificial generators for heating and ventilation. Artificial lighting is used and is attached to the wall panelling and the underpass of the corridors.

Technology reflection...
As The Expedition’s structure and design are complex, different technology avenues were explored including materials, structural features and construction strategies, therefore this exploration has been shown.
After exploring these, the following are those that would be put forward if The Expedition was to be built... This being that the doublesided corten steel panels would be supported by a space frame structure, these would be prefabricated and attached on site in sections. This is instead of using the rod beam structure as it would also allow for further structural support to other features within the space including the panelled windows. The framework is attached to the foundations of the building by a 300mm retaining wall that is built around the building. This wall is just there for structural support as it is covered by the panels.
As all of the modular units are self-contained therefore the ventilation and heating are internally controlled.
The space is designed in a way that the space is versatile, meaning that it is adaptable for different activities, the panelling and the design of the corridors allow for this to happen.
The overall construction of the building is achieved by manipulation of mapping. In simple form to make the floor plans one of the manipulated ship route maps were used and placed on the site, this formed the base shape of the building and the direction and circulation through the building, the corridors also follow this route through the building and onto the bridge.

The skin of The Expedition is made up of corten steel panels, these panels are attached to either a space frame or a rod formwork. The formwork is to be hidden between the panels therefore panels are on both sides of the formwork. The diagram below shows the ageing of these panels over time. This material was chosen
as it was the best material to describe the journey taken by the Windrush generation, as the newer the material the more positive people were feeling but over time people’s opinions were more negative and the expectations were not the same as the reality.

This building is located adjacent to the cultural centre it is to be re-purposed to become the learning facility. As the interior is being re designed to the theme of the project it was also necessary to develop the external facade of this building. As the skin structure is shaped over this pre-existing space a simple style was chosen for the facade, this being recycled wooden slats. The skin pertrudes over this space, inspiration for this was taken from the parasitic precedents previously studied.

Let’s be the change by educating ourselves and others on our history, The Expedition is just one example of how one piece of history can form into a direct architectural representation of the past.
