These visits also highlighted the essential role Medicaid plays in sustaining our services. Families and staff spoke about the progress made when consistent, personcentered supports are available, and the challenges that arise when resources are limited. We are grateful to Representatives Courtney and DeLauro for taking the time to listen, learn, and stand alongside our community as we continue advocating for the funding needed to ensure quality support for all.

Employment Services Team Represents Lumibility at Connecticut APSE 2025

In October, five Employment Services staff members represented Lumibility at the 2025 Connecticut APSE Conference in Rocky Hill.

This year ’ s conference focused on employment opportunities for individuals with differing abilities. It brought together employment professionals from across the state to connect, exchange ideas, and explore best practices to make employment opportunities available to all individuals.

They had the opportunity to network with peers, share their own experiences, and gather valuable insights that will strengthen the work they do every day in support of our mission to “Enhance Skills and Transform Lives of All Individuals with Differing Abilities.”

Lumibility celebrated DSP Week!

From September 8-12, 2025, Lumibility celebrated Direct Support Professionals (DSP) Recognition Week! A time dedicated to acknowledging the commitment, compassion, and tireless work of the amazing DSPs who are the heart of everything we do.

How did Lumibility honor DSP Recognition Week?

Throughout the week, all Direct Support Professionals in our Adult Services programs received thank-you gifts as a small token of our immense gratitude. These gifts are a way to recognize their commitment and dedication to our mission to enhance the skills and transform the lives of all individuals with differing abilities.

There is no single gesture that can fully capture the impact our DSPs make every day. But we hope this serves as a reminder of how deeply respected and appreciated they are!

Phoenix’s Journey with Kidsteps

Phoenix began his Birth to Three journey in February 2024 at just 14 months old after being diagnosed with a communication delay. At his initial evaluation, his mom, Jamayra, shared that Phoenix was only saying “yeah” in different ways to communicate.

With the help of his Kidsteps therapist, Martina, who visited twice a week, Phoenix made steady progress, even through challenging times. When the family was displaced by a fire and living in a hotel for several months, Jamayra and her family remained dedicated, meeting with Martina weekly to continue working on his communication goals.

Together, they disc

During his transition planning meeting, his mom successfully advocated for a half-day preschool program with speech and special education supports. Today, Phoenix can express his feelings, make choices, ask for help, give hugs, name family members, and tell his mom and Abuela, “I love you. ”

As Phoenix begins his journey in preschool, with New Haven Public Schools, his family is deeply grateful for Martina and Kidsteps’ support every step of the way.

Oh, Christmas Tree!

Since the spring, a family and child that we support has been using an iPad with the Proloquo augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) app to express himself in new ways. At first, he delighted in exploring the device; pressing buttons, experimenting with sounds, and “babbling” as he discovered how it worked. With guidance from his team, his family has continued learning how to make communication with the device easier and more meaningful.

Recently, his parent shared a heartwarming story: while using his AAC device, he selected the word “tree.” Taking his message to heart, his parent set up the family’s Christmas tree. That simple exchange carried big meaning; it showed that his words were powerful, understood, and could make real things happen.

Today, he continues to use his device with parent modeling, celebrating each new success. What began as playful exploration is blossoming into purposeful communication; one word at a time.

The Lasting Impact of Early Intervention

A Journey That Began with Kidsteps

A mother recently shared her family’s story with us. Her son, now 19 years old, was diagnosed with autism as a toddler. When he was young, the family received Birth to Three services. At the time, her son was unable to communicate with words.

She remembered how the Kidsteps staff worked closely not only with her son, but with the whole family, teaching sign language and different ways to communicate. Together, they set meaningful goals and celebrated every step forward.

Today, her son is thriving. At 19, he is now teaching other individuals who have autism about speech and different ways to communicate. His mother shared that Kidsteps will always hold a special place in her heart, believing her son would not be where he is today without the support her entire family received from the program.

Hearing from a family like this, who received services years ago and their child is thriving as an adult, is a powerful reminder of the lasting impact of early intervention support on the whole family.

Kidsteps Leadership Team Attends National Early Childhood Conference

Earlier this month, several members of the Kidsteps Leadership Team traveled to Portla Oregon, for the Division of Early Childhood (DEC) 41st Annual International Conference Young Children with Disabilities and Their Families, held October 7–10.

The conference brought together more than 1,500 professionals from across the U.S. and around the world. Our team participated in wide range of workshops focused on topics such as building and retaining a strong early intervention workforce, using AI tools in practice, advocacy and policy, implementing best practices, supporting staff, and engaging families.

Early Childhood Conference Continued..

The insights gained will help strengthen our already high-quality early intervention program and further enhance the services we provide to families. The team looks forward to sharing what they learned with all Kidsteps staff in the weeks ahead.

Outside of conference hours, they also enjoyed exploring Portland’s sights and sampling its wonderful local restaurants.

A special thank you to the Crippled Children’s Aid Society Fund for recognizing the importance of leadership development and generously funding this valuable learning experience.

ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY

Lighting Up Learning: Megan’s Assistive Tech Adventure

Recently, Megan had a blast during her visit to the new Assistive Technology (AT) space at Westbrook, where she finally got her long-awaited Cosmo “competition” with our COO, George Reid-Perry! With Jamie Martin, our AT Manager, and her Employment Specialist, Christine Denehy, cheering her on, Meg was all smiles and excitement as she showed off her favorite Cosmoids, those glowing, interactive pods that light up learning through movement, music, and play. She also reveled in her sweet victory!

From pressing switches to sequencing tasks, Megan is leveling up her skills in attention, turn-taking, and teamwork, all while having a blast. Her sessions with Cosmo aren’t just fun, they’re building real-world readiness and confidence, one colorful pulse at a time. Megan is supported in our Individualized Supported Employment Program and our Individualized Day Community – Day Support Option Program and is thriving. We’re so proud of Megan’s progress and can’t wait to see what she’ll conquer in her next Assistive Tech-powered journey!

LUMIBIL-AT’s Communication Board

Lumibility’s Assistive Technology Program created its own communication board. The vocabulary on the board was carefully selected through observation and collaboration with staff and individuals. It includes core words—versatile, high-frequency words like ‘ go, ’ ‘stop,’ ‘help,’ and ‘want’ alongside personalized fringe vocabulary that reflects specific locations, routines, and experiences at that site. We also included photos of their actual rooms, vans, and activity spaces to support recognition and carryover.

While some individuals may already have experience using symbol-based communication systems, many have not. That’s exactly why a tool like this is valuable. Large shared communication boards are designed with universal access in mind. The board is always present, always available, and highly visible in the environment. Thus, even without prior experience, they can see symbols being used naturally throughout the day by individuals and staff.

From the moment guests arrived, they were welcomed with colorful leis and the sounds of island music, instantly immersing everyone in the Luau spirit. Lumibility North Haven staff went above and beyond to create a welcoming environment, complete with themed decorations, a photo booth filled with fun props, and classic games like Connect 4 and cornhole that encouraged friendly competition and lots of smiles!

The highlight of the afternoon was a raffle drawing, where several lucky individuals won goodie bags to take home! The Luau Party is more than just a summer tradition; it’s a meaningful opportunity for individuals to connect, build relationships, and create memories together.

Dental Students Visit Our North Haven Enrichment Program

In September, dental students from the University of New Haven brought their expertise and enthusiasm to our North Haven Enrichment Services Day Program, delivering an interactive and educational session on dental hygiene. Individuals had the opportunity to learn practical, hands-on techniques for maintaining the health of their teeth and gums.

The visit was more than just informative; it was also engaging. The energy and dedication of the University of New Haven students sparked meaningful conversations, encouraging participants to take charge of their dental health. Their presence reminded us that learning can be both engaging and empowering, especially when delivered with genuine care and concern.

Summer Fun Outing at Mystic Aquarium

This summer, individuals from all three of our Enrichment Services Day Programs embarked on an exciting adventure at Mystic Aquarium, where they experienced the wonders of marine life up close. From the moment they arrived, individuals were immersed in a world of aquatic exploration, encountering incredible creatures and learning through hands-on experiences. They also had the unique opportunity to touch and interact with various aquatic species, sparking curiosity and joy while deepening their connection to the natural world.
