Chairman's Message

Good evening Ladies, Gentlemen and Children

On the last occasion when our production of "The Mikado" was presented here in 2004, we had a very enjoyable week, and I am confident that this year we will repeat this. "The Mikado" is often named as the most popular of the G & S Operettas, and this year we have a changed company, and a slightly different orchestra. However, we have our resident producer in Prue and our long term musical directorAllan. My thanks in addition also go our rehearsal pianists, Brian and Pam I mentioned a changed company, and orchestra, however together they present a formidable combination, one which I am sure you will enjoy.

My committee have again been very supportive and I would also commend our advertisers to you for the excellent services they offer.

All of you then, have a lovely evening, and take care going home.

Roger C. Kentsbeer, Honorary Chairman lf you would like to become a Patron of this Society please send your gift, however small, to Hazel Daniels. "An acknowledgement will be sent"

The Story a cheap tailor of Titipu who has been condemned to death for

l1!o-Ko, I \flirting, is reprieved at the last moment and raised to the rank of Lord

High

Executioner. lt is his daily duty to carry out executions in Titipu.

Jo Titipu comes Nanki-Poo, the son of the Mikado, who to escape the I attentions of Katisha, has fled his Father's court disguised as a second trombone player. He falls madly in love with Yum-Yum, who is already betrothed to her elderly guardian, Ko-Ko, and so their case seems hopeless. Wedding preparations are already in hand when a letter arrives from the Mikado announcing that unless someone is beheaded within a month the post of Lord High Executioner will be abolished, and the city reduced to a village avoid irretrievable ruin for everyone, and after consultation with Pooh-Bah Jo I (who occupies every conceivable post from Private Secretary to First Lord of the Treasury - with appropriate salaries) it is decided that a victim must be found at once. The difficult choice is made when Nanki-Poo, overcome with grief at his inability to wed Yum-Yum announces his intention of committing suicide. Ko-Ko sees a way out and suggests to Nanki-Poo that he should allow himself to "be beheaded handsomely at the hands of the Public Executioner" in a months time. Nanki-Poo agrees on the condition that he shall marry Yum-Yum at once. reluctantly assents, for

he l1!o-Ko I \and free to marry him. Aflaw in this

realises that she will be a widow in a month convenient arrangement is found: when a married man is beheaded, his wife is buried alive! ln the midst of this dilemma the approach of the Mikado is announced. Matters are serious for Ko-Ko, but his ready wit saves him. Why kill anyone when an affidavit that an execution has taken place will do just as well? Pooh-Bah, being grossly insulted, insists on a "cash down" settlement before he endorses the fiction. Mikado announces that he has come about a different matter, namely, the Th" I disappearance of his son from the lmperial Court. lt is now discovered that the schemers have unwittingly sworn to the execution of the heir to the throne.

saves himself and his accomplices from death by boiling oil or melted I \lead calling Nanki-Poo (about to go on his honeymoon) back to life, and sacrificing himself in marriage with Katisha, who secures the reprieve. What a price to pay. Poor Ko-Ko.
