Good evening Ladies, Gentlemen and Children It is my great pleasure to welcome you to our production of Patience, set in the late 1960’s at a music festival in the grounds of Bunthorne Castle Our producer for the first time is Gordon Hodges assisted by Carol Wallman and, of course, Alana Thackray as musical director.
Chairman’s Message
John Epton, Honorary Chairman
May I also thank Hazel & John Daniels for the superb set and all those who have helped with this production, both front of house and backstage. As you will soon see “Patience” is dedicated to the late Mr George Thompson. Mike Cocke has taken over the box office and we are “on-line” for the first time. Colin Jones has re-vamped saods.org.uk and we are also on Facebook. I also thank Stephen Hoath for his computer skills on the programme and publicity posters and, of course, Hazel Daniels who has been secretary for many years. This year our main charity has been East Anglia Ambulance and we have also raised money for Kidney Research, the Cheshire Homes, the Royal British Legion and Roxton Congregational Church. After Patience we are giving a concert for Clophill Methodist Roof Fund. I wish you all a most enjoyable evening and hope to see you again in 2017 for “Arias, Bagpipes, Cadenzas.... An ABC of Musical Entertainment” our spring concert and “Iolanthe” in November.
If you would like to become a Patron of this Society please send your gift, however small, to Hazel Daniels. “An acknowledgement will be sent”

Patience
or Bunthorne’s Bride
First Performed
April 23, 1881
First Run
578 performances
All of the maidens in the village are besotted with Reginald Bunthorne, a moody and handsome poet, but he has eyes only for the simple milkmaid, Patience. However, Bunthorne’s artistic ways are all just an act to attract women to him--he doesn’t even like poetry! Besides, Patience is in love with her childhood sweetheart, who happens to be a real poet named Archibald Grosvenor, but feels she cannot marry him because he is just too perfect. In the meantime, the serious (and decidedly nonpoetic) platoon of Heavy Dragoon Guards that were meant to marry the village maidens find themselves dismayed and perplexed by their sudden loss of prospects. Join us as we march, sing and dance our way through plot twists and turns to discover if there can be a happy ending for all involved.

Bex Badham (Patience) Bex studied music at Newcastle University where she majored in classical voice. Bex has a lifelong passion for musical theatre which has inevitably lead to the world of G&S. Recently Bex starred as the Fairy Queen in Iolanthe and in Patience at the Harrogate G&S festival.
Stephen Hoath (Grosvenor) Stephen has performed many baritone roles with SAODS but this is his first time playing Grosvenor. Having just finished playing Count Danilo in The Merry Widow, Stephen is enjoying getting back to his G&S roots with this wonderful version of Patience.
Colin Jones (Bunthorne) Colin is back again having starred in the role of Sir Joseph Porter in last year’s HMS Pinafore. This is Colin’s third production of Patience but his first as Bunthorne; he claims he has been typecast this time though!
Linda Bowen (Lady Jane) Linda is delighted to be playing the role of Lady Jane especially as she gets to dance with Colin. She has performed many of the leading ladies in the G&S canon from a terrifying Katisha to a buxom Buttercup in last year’s production of HMS Pinafore.
Charles Mills (The Duke of Dunstable) Charles balances his day job as finance director of Graeae Theatre Company with evenings spent on the amateur stage and in chamber choirs. This is his second time playing the Duke and he promises to get it right this time.

David Crew (Colonel Calverley) David has played most of the G&S baritone leads over the years with Harpenden LOS. Most recently David played Baron Zeta in The Merry Widow with Putteridge Bury G&S Society. This is David’s first show with SAODS and he is really enjoying being in Stewartby.
Carol Urwin (Lady Saphir) Carol has played many of the G&S soprano leads with SAODS most recently taking the role of Josephine in last year’s production of HMS Pinafore. Carol has been with the society since 1992. She would like to thank her family for their continued support.
Margaret Snape (Lady Angela) Margaret last worked with SAODS back in 1998 when she helped produce Iolanthe and is delighted to be back on the Stewartby stage. Recently, Margaret has been performing with Putteridge Bury G&S Society recently appearing as Lady Blanche in Princess Ida.
John Epton (Major Murgatroyd) Over the years John has performed all the G&S operas and taken many of the leading roles with SAODS and other local societies. This is John’s fith Patience, having played Bunthorne in the last four he is enjoying the part of the Major who has far fewer lines to learn!
Margaret Magee (Lady Ella) Margaret has been a member of the society since 1990. When she is not singing with us, Margaret performs with Upwell Operatic and other music societies near her home in Huntingdon.

OBITUARIES This year has been a very sad one for this society with the deaths of Eric Caves and George Thompson. Eric and his wife Joan got involved as members of SAODS, when he helped with the Stewartby village community. They joined in 1989 and stayed in the society until 2008, helping with scenery and lighting. Joan was wardrobe mistress whilst Eric made the best cup of tea ever. George was one of our earliest members, pianist, musical director, singer, actor, committee member, vice-chairman and vice-president. This production is dedicated to George Thompson. “Is life a boon? If so, it must befall that Death, when e’er he call, must call too soon”
