Chairman’s Message Good evening Ladies, Gentlemen and Children

On this, the third occasion I have the pleasure to welcome you all to Stewartby, or should it be “Venice”? For tonight we will transport you via the magic of Gilbert & Sullivan to an evening of comedy, good music and colourful costumes, portraying the merry goings on of that group of characters so synonymous with that city, ‘The Gondoliers’. Our producer and musical director have again brought us what I think will be a splendid show. My thanks to them, also Brian and Barbara our hardworking rehearsal pianists. My thanks also to a wonderful company, and this year in particular a big thank you to the members of our orchestra who through their kind co-operation, have enabled us to have a full musical accompaniment to our production. As always your continued, and much valued support makes it all worthwhile. Have an enjoyable evening.

Roger C. Kentsbeer, Honorary Chairman If you would like to become a Patron of this Society please send your gift, however small, to Hazel Daniels. “An acknowledgement will be sent”

T

The Story

o be betrothed at the age of six months and married by proxy is happily not the fate of many people, even though the infant husband is the son and heir of a reigning monarch. Such however, was the fate of Casilda, the beautiful daughter of the Duke of Plaza-Toro, a proud but impecunious Grandee of Spain.

T

he Duke, accompanied by the Duchess and Casilda (now grown up) and attended by his suite, one Luiz, comes to Venice to seek the Royal Husband. It is only on arrival that the Duke springs the news of her early marriage upon his daughter. But this magnificent surprise does not please Casilda by any means, for she is already madly in love with Luiz, a fact unknown to the unsuspecting Duke. But alas, it does not alter the fact that she is married, and that her little romance with Luiz is therefore at an end.

B

ut the exigencies of comic opera happily do not permit matters to end here, for complications have arisen. It seems there is a doubt as to the husband’s whereabouts, for one Don Alhambra had caused the infant husband to be stolen and brought to Venice, owing to some trouble in the Royal Household. The infant had been placed in the care of a highly respectable gondolier, and this foolish person had carelessly mixed up the infant with his own son, both of whom he had brought up in the humble calling of gondoliers.

S

o poor Casilda is in the unfortunate position of being married to one of the gondoliers, but nobody at the moment can tell which is which. Consternation prevails when this announcement is made, for the two gondoliers, Marco and Giuseppe have themselves just married two charming little ladies, Gianetta and Tessa, and thus matters becomes more complicated.

N

ow, since the country is in a state of insurrection, it is absolutely essential that they should assume the reigns of government at once, and until it is ascertained which of them is King, Don Alhambra has arranged that they shall reign jointly. And so they continue to act as one person until, in contemplative fashion, the matrimonial knot is disentangled.

T

he Royal foster-mother is summoned and to the consternation of all and the evident relief of Casilda, announces that the King entrusted the Royal Prince to her care, his name is ‘Luiz’ and thus the traditional ‘happy ending’ is achieved.
