In this second issue of the Santee Magazine you’ll get to know one of the Santee Chamber’s newest members, Phil Pace from Phil’s BBQ, and read why he’s opening his latest restaurant in Santee. You’ll read about several programs created to help Santee youth discover some cool things about aviation, art, athletics, music, and chess, and what it will take for them to become successful adults in our community. You’ll also find out which new restaurant is going where, and learn a little about our history.

I recently discovered that a lot of people don’t know what a chamber is. Welcome to the second edition of the Santee Chamber of Commerce’s magazine highlighting what makes Santee such a great place to live, shop and do business.

This magazine is dedicated to the 2012 Santee Car Show & BBQ Festival which will take place on October 13, 2012 from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. There will be vendor and food booths, and live music featuring Bobby and the Angels. Enjoy the best and most popular vintage tunes from one of the highestenergy bands performing good old Rock n’ Roll from the 50’s and 60’s, followed by San Diego’s own Inside Out Band.

They’re a dynamic, crowd-pleasing dance band presenting a versatile mix of music. From spirited dance grooves, highenergy rock, Top 40’s, disco and funk to smooth sophisticated standards, with both male and female lead vocals, the band creates energetic and exciting music.

And don’t forget all the beautiful classic cars that will be on display and competing for trophies.

This year the Car Show has added a BBQ Festival. We have teamed up with the Kansas City Barbeque Society for this sanctioned event. KCBS sanctions BBQ and grilling competitions across the U.S. and promotes barbeque as America’s cuisine. In addition, KCBS has an extensive Certified Barbeque Judging program. It is the largest society of barbeque enthusiasts in the world. Tasting tickets will be sold for everyone to enjoy samples of the competitors’ different barbeque cuisine.

And this year we will be selling raffle tickets at the Car Show for the opportunity to win a classic 1956 Chevy Bel Air. For only $20.00 you could win this classic car, as it only takes one ticket to win it. If you would like to purchase a ticket in advance, go to the Santee Chamber of Commerce office located on Mission Gorge Road, or Lloyd’s Auto Body on Buena Vista. Bring the family, there’s something for everyone at this event.

The City is still attempting to recover the from the State’s “one-two punch” over this past year. In January of this year, the State eliminated redevelopment agencies statewide, and shifted those local funds to address the State Budget gap. We were fortunate in preserving our bond funding to continue the Prospect Avenue project, but funding for future projects was lost, and we are still picking up the pieces from this devastating fiscal hit. Just two months ago, the State seized an additional $5.1 million from local coffers through a late budget measure, cutting even further into our reserves. The City is working hard to shore up our revenues, and continue cost-cutting efforts, while minimizing the impacts to programs and services provided to the community.

In November, the City is sponsoring a ballot measure to raise the City’s “hotel tax” from 6% to 10%, which is the median rate statewide. This will apply to visitors to Santee to help pay for police and fire protection, streets and infrastructure, and community services and amenities.

Despite these many challenges, this community continues to persevere and prosper. We are fortunate in welcoming to Santee several new businesses in 2012—Fresh & Easy, Chipotle, BevMo, In N Out, Chick-fil-A, Buffalo Wild Wings, and the renowned Phil’s BBQ. The City has several major street improvements completed or underway, such as resurfacing Mission Gorge Road, and street resurfacing and storm drain replacement along Carlton Hills Boulevard. We’re also taking proactive steps to monitor conditions of our street and drainage systems. Our Town Center Community Park now features one of the most scenic concert venues in the region, and we are working with the San Diego River Conservancy to complete the San Diego River Trail through Santee with the addition of the Hanlon Walker multi-use path connecting to Lakeside.

The Santee City Council values the citizens of Santee, our businesses and organizations, and the many stakeholders in our city. Together we form the foundations of our community, and create the ties that bind.

The best sandwich in America There are few places in the world that draw a truly diverse crowd.

At the young age of 15, Pace created his now famous topsecret recipe for barbeque sauce and dry rub. Soon after graduating from high school, with $5,000 of his own savings, Pace opened his first restaurant, ‘Phil’s Place for Ribs’, in a converted gas station. That restaurant soon outgrew its location and, with some help from his parents, Pace moved to a larger place with a liquor license. Next he upgraded to a 200-

At the age of 31, he moved to San Diego and settled in Mission Hills. He took some time off to relax and regroup. He walked his dog every day in the neighborhood and really liked the location.

One day, while sitting having coffee, he saw a storefront vacancy on Goldfinch Street and, lucky for Santee, the barbeque bug was unleashed once again.

Since opening its doors in San Diego in 1998, Phil’s BBQ has served over one million pounds of BBQ sauce (enough to fill Shamu’s tank). The business has expanded from four employees to well over 100. It started at 800 square feet and gradually expanded to 2,700 square feet. Eventually, Phil took his barbecue smells out of Mission Hills and relocated to the Sports Arena area where patrons are willing to stand in line for more than an hour to taste “unforgettable food with flair” and take in the experience and ambiance. Phil’s second location is in San Marcos; which he says has similar demographics to Santee, the third and possibly last location.

Pace had been considering opening a location in East County for a few years. The completion of Highway 52 made the former Roadhouse Grill on Cuyamaca the ideal location as a “central East County location that was easily accessible by several freeways,” he said. The building’s interior has been completely remodeled, including a total revamping of the “back of the house” (a.k.a. kitchen) and new bathrooms.

Santee Car Show and BBQ Festival Saturday, October 13th at Riverview Parkway

On October 13th from 9 am to 5 pm, the Santee Chamber of Commerce will elevate its 3rd annual Santee Car Show and Festival to new heights by adding a major barbeque competition. The newly renamed Santee Car Show & BBQ Festival will have more than 25 of the top BBQ teams from across the country preparing chicken, pork ribs, pork and brisket for judges to evaluate and for guests to sample. Trophies and cash prizes will be awarded based on taste, appearance and texture.

The festival will still have more than 250 cars, trucks, and motorcycles on display with more than 100 food and vendor booths for everyone to enjoy.

The main stage features Bobby and the Angels and Inside Out, with a beer garden featuring Santee’s own award winning Manzanita Brewing Co. And don’t forget the car drawing! This year we’re giving away a 1956 Chevy Bel Air that’s been reconditioned by Lloyd’s Collision Center.

Tickets for the drawing are available at the Chamber office or at the Festival.

With the explosion of food channels and cooking shows, BBQ competitions have taken on a life of their own. That’s why we’ve partnered with the Kansas City BBQ Society to promote the BBQ portion of the festival. They have a great reputation for quality competitions and attract the best teams. Adding the BBQ contest to the Car Show should increase the attendance to more than 20,000 people.

Since 1985 the Kansas City BBQ Society has been fulfilling their mission to “…celebrate, teach, preserve and promote barbeque as a culinary technique, sport and art form.” With more than 14,000 professional members, the KCBS is the largest society of barbeque enthusiasts in the world that sanctions and judges more than 400 BBQ competitions across the U.S., Santee is lucky to be one of the few cities in the county to host a KCBS event.

Economic Recovery... the Long Road Back

Anything remotely considered “economic recovery” lately has resembled a cruel dance of two steps forward, one step back.

San Diego’s economy is recovering, and regional and local indicators are up, but many businesses that managed to survive the fiscal ravages of the Great Recession are now faced with a new challenge: whether they can hold on long enough to survive a slower than anticipated recovery period.

When the recession was in full swing, the City and the Santee Chamber launched the “Shop Santee and Save” program to highlight how Santee has the lowest sales tax rate in the County, and to encourage residents and businesses to patronize local stores and reinvest their dollars back in this community. Those efforts helped local retail sales and kept shopping center vacancies lower. The City secured low-interest bond funding to finance final phases of Town Center Community Park and major street improvements throughout the City. The State’s action this year to eliminate redevelopment agencies statewide resulted in the loss of millions in revenues envisioned for additional projects.

Fortunately, the City was able to issue one last redevelopment bond measure in March 2011 to secure funding for extensive street and visual improvements along the Prospect Avenue industrial corridor.

There are several reasons why locating a business in Santee can make a difference.

• RANKING IN THE REGION: Santee is the 4th highest growth city in San Diego County for 2012, with the 7th highest median household income among 18 cities, and the 7th lowest unemployment rate.

The City has also maintained the 3rd lowest crime rate for several years. Two-thirds of the housing stock is comprised of single-family homes, with 71% of homes owner-occupied. Home prices are rebounding as well. In July, Santee had the highest median price for a single-family detached home in East County at $339,000. This was up 4.3% over last year, and up 5.9% since June.

• ECONOMIC STABILITY: Santee’s 10 largest retail centers have less than 5% vacancy, and have stayed below 5% throughout the recession. There are 132 national chain retailers, including six national chains added in 2012. The City has experienced a net gain of 11 national and regional chains since 2008. The City’s visitor industry is growing as well. Sportsplex USA attracts over 300,000 annually for sports leagues, tournaments & events and Santee Lakes Recreational Preserve attracts 650,000 visitors annually.

• CONVENIENT ACCESS: With direct access to three freeways (SR52, SR67, and SR125) and 5-minute access to Interstate-8, Santee is located just 20 minutes from the beaches and silicon businesses of La Jolla/Sorrento Valley or 25 minutes to downtown San Diego and South County. Santee Transit Center provides Trolley service to SDSU, Mission Valley, Old Town and downtown San Diego was just recently added to the Green Line.

• BUSINESS FRIENDLY ENVIRONMENT: The City takes a proactive and supportive approach in dealing with businesses, developers and contractors. Both the City of Santee and the Santee Chamber have partnered on several programs to assist local businesses, including sponsoring business workshops and job fairs. Local businesses can access free technical assistance from the Small Business Development Center and the Santee Contracting Opportunities Center. On October 19th, the SDCOC, City and Chamber are sponsoring a forum on government contracting for manufacturing businesses.

• FUTURE GROWTH POTENTIAL: Santee offers much for corporate growth and expansion -- access to regional freeways, available land, skilled labor force, and high-profile demographics. San Diego Christian College is relocating their college campus to Santee, with expansion plans for up to 1,200 students. Another major employer is slated for the downtown area in the next few months, and Santee will soon be welcoming Phil’s BBQ, In N Out, Chick-fil-A and Buffalo Wild Wings.

Tina and Walmart Dedicated to Santee Walmart Store Manager Tina Hertenstein and her team of associates are committed to spreading good cheer in and out of the store. Since coming to Santee more than three and a half years ago, Tina has become personally involved in a number of local organizations and also raised the store’s profile as a key contributor to Santee community life.

The Santee Walmart store is a regular sponsor of the Santee Street Fair and Car Show and hosts an annual back-to-school event with the Santee Food Bank. Store associates participate in regular clean-ups of the Santee River, and last year the store donated stuffed animals for a local Marines Christmas Party.

As part of this initiative, Walmart pledged $9.5 million in grants nationally to help educate communities about the importance of eating healthier. These funds will support organizations with a shared mission of promoting healthy eating habits. The grants will help further nutrition education programs, cooking classes and guidance on shopping for healthier foods on a budget.

Walmart is also introducing a new front-of-package icon labeled “Great For You” that will help customers identify healthier food choices.

Tina’s commitment to Santee extends beyond her volunteer and support work in the community. She is a vocal proponent of Walmart’s plans to expand her store to add a fullline of groceries, including fresh produce.

“At Walmart, our focus is simple and straightforward: saving people money so they can live better. One of the most important contributors to a family’s efforts to live healthier lives is the availability of fresh, affordable food,” said Hertenstein. “By expanding our offerings to include fresh produce, meats and dairy, we can have a significant impact on the ability of Santee families to make healthier choices without sacrificing other necessities.”

In fact, providing healthier food options is now a cornerstone of Walmart’s business. In January 2011, the company announced an initiative to provide customers with healthier and more affordable food options. As part of this plan, Walmart committed to a five-year plan to lower salts, fats and sugars in thousands of its products and to drop prices

Before the Walmart store can introduce a full grocery department into the store, it must expand the building size – a move that must have City Council approval to proceed. The company is currently working with city staff to develop an Environmental Impact Report, which will then be released for public review before being considered by the Council.

While she’s anxious for the project to move forward, Tina vows that her focus remains on serving her customers and the community in the best way she knows how.

“Our store has been and will continue to be an active member of the Santee community. Our associates live in Santee; their kids go to school in Santee. We’re proud to call Santee our home, and we’ll continue working to provide top-notch customer service with a smile every day and support local families every way we can,” concluded Hertenstein.

Virtual Flight Academy Youth Flight Training As “the Chamber guy” I am fortunate to meet a lot of interesting people. In June at the Wings Over Gillespie Air Show I met Francis Johnson, a retired Navy Officer, civilian pilot, and Congressional Relations Director for the Virtual Flight Academy.

The VFA is an organization created to teach kids how to fly both commercial and military aircraft using the internet and relatively affordable high-end desktop computers, with three 27” monitors, as flight simulators.

These simulators provide an amazingly high level of realism, as students fly over 3-D rendered real-life terrains and airfields.

The system supports multi-aircraft formation interactivity with instructors and students flying together in the same virtual cockpit even though they may not be in the same location.

Francis explained to me that over the next 20 years we will need nearly 70,000 new pilots and 93,000 new aircraft technicians as many of today’s pilots and techs begin to retire, and airlines expand their fleets to serve a changing global economy. Many countries are already experiencing a shortage in these fields.

In addition to aviation skills, the VFA is a great confidence builder and character development opportunity for many students. The program is free to aspiring aviators and is taught by volunteers that are seasoned military pilots.

In the 1990’s, the USAir Force sponsored a study into what makes a student actively seek the career of pilot. The truly “driven” military pilots reported that they first had the dream of being a pilot when they were 12 or 13 years old.

Most USAF pilots begin their flight training a full decade after they first dreamt of becoming a pilot. It’s difficult to imagine Olympic athletes waiting 10 years before learning their chosen sport.

In much the same way as a young person’s athletic talent may be nurtured, the VFA is designed to provide aspiring aviators an

opportunity to demonstrate their excellence and passion at a young age by developing real aviation skills.

Currently the VFA is preparing to teach its first six classes in partnership with the US Navy League Sea Cadets. Later this winter programs will take flight at the Wentworth Military Academy in Lexington, Missouri and in San Diego at Kearny High School in partnership with the Jr. ROTC program.

Since that random conversation at Wings Over Gillespie, the Santee Chamber has begun working with the Santee School District Foundation and the Santee School District to bring the VFA training program to the youth of Santee, with the goal of kids learning to fly by the end of this school year. Building a Strong Foundation Back in the early 1970’s Princess Homes built several tracts of homes throughout San Diego County. The Santee neighborhood is known as Santiago, located just north of the Carlton Oaks Golf Course. The original sales literature for this community touts the advantages of home ownership at Santiago, including “an ideal location with a feature-packed home on a scenic lot at a price most families can afford, Carlton Oaks Elementary school will open this September right in the neighborhood - within easy walking distance for even the shortest legs, and the multi-million dollar San Diego Stadium is just minutes away”.

The Santiago development is mostly above ground construction that uses a steel beam and “V” brace foundation system to support the house. Forty years of improper drainage, water seepage and sewer problems, can cause the steel “V” braces to rust and corrode, even to disintegrate completely compromising the integrity of the structure. A One of a Kind Music Experience Staump School of Music

Staump School of Music opened in Santee back in 2009 with a commitment to provide the youth of Santee access to quality and affordable music education. West Hills alumni Tim Staump (a drummer), and wife Maria (a composer), not only teach students how to play more than 17 instruments (guitar, bass guitar, voice, piano, drums/percussion, saxophone, trumpet, violin, viola, flute, clarinet, mandolin, Dobro, lap steel, ukulele, trombone and marimba), they emphasize the importance of understanding music theory, and composition, and offer classes in recording, songwriting, vocal fundamentals and performance.

Clinics are scheduled several times a year with special guest instructors like drummer Mark Schulman, who performed with Cher, Foreigner, P!NK and several other major acts, and vocalist Ken Stacey, an American Idol vocal coach, and back up vocalist for Michael Jackson’s “This Is It” tour.

Students are encouraged to perform at recitals and competitions throughout year, and are also given the opportunity to use the recording studio to record private lessons. Recently, Tim and

Maria’s students performed at the Whisky a Go Go in Hollywood, and this year’s Fall Concert will be at Pathways Church on Friday November 2nd from 6-8pm, which is open to the public with donations of food for the Santee Food Bank encouraged. More than 60 students will be performing for an audience of over 500.

As part of their commitment to provide accessible to music education, Tim and Maria also work with the East County Youth Choir and East County Youth Guitar Ensemble and provide these programs at no cost to participating East County youth.

The East County Youth Guitar Ensemble will get to perform with the Grossmont College Guitar Ensemble, directed by guitar virtuoso Fred Benedetti of West Hills High.

Santee Youth 4 Solutions Youth Advocacy for Santee

The Santee Youth 4 Solutions (SY4S), a youth advocacy group that includes students from West Hills and Santana high schools.

SY4S volunteers learn leadership skills and participate in alcohol and drug prevention work, while providing a safe and fun way for youth to meet each other and to advocate for safe environments for youth in Santee. “SY4S is a great way to give back to the community and a fun way to make new friends,” says Hailey Holmgren, a member of the group.

SY4S members were recently recognized at the County Office of Education’s “Excellence in Prevention” dinner, where youth groups are applauded for their contributions to alcohol drug prevention in San Diego County. In addition of SY4S youth advocates, Frankie Hogan, was honored by the California Youth Advocacy Network with the “Youth Advocate of the Year” award. This award, which includes a scholarship, is only given to 3 teens in the entire state of California.

Santee Youth 4 Solutions efforts include many activities. Last winter, SY4S helped conduct store assessments in Santee, to make sure that alcohol retailers were complying with the law by not selling alcohol and tobacco or “Bath Salts” to minors. The group shared their assessment findings with law enforcement and other community leaders at the City of Santee Community Oriented Policing Committee. Future assessments are scheduled to take place this fall and winter as well.

In April, SY4S volunteers, along with other health advocates, collected public opinion surveys about smoking in Santee’s parks.

a group dedicated to reducing underage drinking, drug and tobacco use, the American Cancer Society, the American Lung Association and Santee residents in a Smoke Free Parks event, exploring strategies to make Santee Parks healthier, safer, and smoke free. The chair of Santee Solutions Coalition, Tawni Jochens had this to say about SY4S: “Santee Youth 4 Solutions’ contributions to the Santee Solutions Coalition are invaluable. They provide valuable resources and leadership to the community, and we are grateful for their efforts.”

Substance abuse prevention will remain a priority for Santee Youth 4 Solutions as long as they threaten our community. The work can be difficult and time consuming, but the rewards are great. “Even when we are supposed to be serious, it’s fun. This group is pretty amazing.” Sarah Cesena, member of Santee Youth 4 Solutions.

Santee Solutions is a community coalition dedicated to reducing underage drinking, drug and tobacco use amongst Santee youth. We work with youth, community leaders, law enforcement, parents, community members, as well as other community leaders to ensure a safe and drug-free Santee.

Santee School District Foundation working together to enhance education

Established in 2003, the Santee School District Foundation (SSDF) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, with a vision to help Santee School District schools produce good citizens and future leaders for our community. The SSDF supports this vision by providing financial, material, and service resources to maintain consistently high quality educational opportunities for the children of our community.

The Foundation proudly partners with the Santee School District by financially supporting the Arts Attack program, bringing art into the classrooms. The Arts Attack program, run mostly by volunteers, brings art instruction and hands-on activities to every K-8 class at every school. The Foundation provides funds for the coordination and the purchase of art supplies.

Each year the Foundation provides each school with a $1,000 grant for a special project or program that supports the Vision and Mission of the Foundation. Schools have received funding for performing arts programs, playground equipment, exercise equipment, and library books.

The school district has received funds totaling over $80,000 over the past several years for classroom technology stations, wireless

access, and additional hardware to support technology for student learning and enhance 21st century learning skills. The Foundation continues to support classroom technology tools this year by helping provide current and consistent software throughout the District that will increase collaborative working opportunities for students.

November brings our annual “Stuff the Turkey” fundraiser, which last year supplied $750 for every school to purchase books. Every dollar earned goes directly back to the schools for students.

As you can see, the Foundation is busy working to provide additional resources and unique programs for students at all schools. The Foundation, comprised of volunteers so that all money raised is used to support our Mission, greatly appreciates private donations and engages in fundraising to provide direct and meaningful benefits to the students in Santee School District.

Santee Turkey Trot to Benefit Local Charities Before you sit down for Thanksgiving Dinner this year, get out and do something that is good for you and good for the Santee Community. On Thursday, November 22 at 8:00 am, Pathways Community Church will be hosting the 1st Annual Waddle and Trot 5K and Fun Run. This fun family event is intended for runners and walkers of every fitness level and all proceeds will go to Santee Santas and the Santee Food Bank.

“We are so thrilled to be bringing this race to Santee, while supporting these two great causes,” says Phil Herrington, Pastor at Pathways Community Church.

“Santee Santas and Santee Food Bank do so much for our community and Thanksgiving is the perfect time for all of us to give back.”

The race will begin at Pathways Center at the corner of Mast and Carlton Hills. The fast and flat course will proceed west on Mast Boulevard and enter scenic Santee Lakes via Lake Canyon Road. After circling Lakes 4 and 5, the course will proceed back to Pathways Center and will be followed by a post-race celebration that includes refreshments, vendor booths and entertainment. Prizes will be given to the Top 3 Male and Female finishers and all registrants will receive a race T-Shirt.

The Fun Run is for kids age 10 and under and will kick-off at 9:00 am within the Pathways Parking Lot. All Fun Run participants will receive a special finisher’s medal and awards will be given for top male and female runners by age group.

Santee Santas is an all-volunteer, non-profit organization that has been bringing the spirit of the holidays to the Santee community for more than fifty years.

They provide food and gifts, especially during the holiday season, to Santee residents. In 2011, Santee Santas provided assistance to 246 families, including 405 children.

The Santee Food Bank is an all-volunteer organization that provides emergency food assistance to low and middle income residence of Santee. They disperse food from their Cottonwood Avenue location every Wednesday and Friday and the first and third Saturday of the month from 9-11 am.

Naval Sea Cadet Corps Celebrating 50 years

September is Sea Cadet Month. Each year members of the Naval Sea Cadet corps celebrate the anniversary of their charter by Congress on September 10, 1962. This year’s celebration holds special meaning because it’s the Corps’ 50th.

Celebrations will be held in Washington, DC, Chicago, IL, and right here in San Diego. Members of the NSCC, alumni, and the NLUS will celebrate the accomplishments of Cadets and adult volunteers from the past and present.

This summer over 5,000 youth, ages 10-17, found adventure and training through the Naval Sea Cadet Corps, on shore and afloat, young male and female cadets explore careers in the Navy and Coast Guard through varied training programs and activities. Developing good citizenship, a greater sense of responsibility, leadership skills and self-discipline are other objectives of the program. Many of those Cadets were from right here in San Diego, while many travelled to San Diego, to experience some of the exciting training opportunities held at the military installations that span the county. Sea Cadets have participated in such notable activities as the commissioning of the USS San Diego, the Coronado Independence Day Parade, and San Diego’s Fleet Week.

Sponsored by the U.S. Navy League, the Department of the Navy and Coast Guard, the Naval Sea Cadet Corps is a federally chartered youth training organization. The program is open to all young Americans regardless of race, color, creed, gender, or disability. The San Diego Council sponsors the Black Knights Squadron, Challenger Division, Fort Fisher Division and their associated Navy League training Ships. The Coronado Council sponsors the Coronado Battalion, and the TriCity Council sponsors GUNFIGHTER Squadron at MCAS Miramar.

Cadets advancing in the Naval Sea Cadet Corps can enlist in advanced pay grades in the Navy or Coast Guard. About 70 percent of all cadets completing the Naval Sea Cadet Corps program will enter the armed forces and nearly 10% of the Naval Academy class is former Naval Sea Cadets.

Santana Alum Brings Chess To East County For decades chess has been regarded as a game that can have many beneficial effects on a child’s development and critical thinking skills. Countless studies have shown that chess helps a child’s mental clarity, fortitude, stability, and self-confidence.

Many schools are using chess as an inexpensive way to help kids develop decision-making skills while learning to visualize future possibilities. In schools where chess is offered, students exhibit excellence in math and science.

“Coach Ron”, a 1984 Santana High graduate, has been a member of the San Diego Chess Club for more than 30 years, and held several board positions for the club during that time.

For past 17 years Ron has taught chess to hundreds of children in schools, and day camps throughout California, totaling over 10,000 hours of classroom instruction.

He teaches using the Evans Method, which includes some instruction, as well as formal and casual games. Students receive prizes at the end of each class to reward positive participation and trophies or medals at the end of each session. This style of instruction has produced many national champions at every scholastic level.

Recently Ron founded the Pacific Hills Chess Academy and began focusing his efforts to bring his after school enrichment program to as many students as possible. St. Rita’s School in San Diego will be offering the program as will Tierrasanta and Adams Avenue Recreation Centers.

More than 70% of the District’s modernization projects have been completed and the School Board is committed to finishing the remaining planned projects. These improvements to schools are reflective of our community and their desire for contemporary and engaging learning environments for the children of Santee School District. During the summer of 2008, five of the district’s nine schools underwent modernization and new construction. During the summer of 2010, three more schools were modernized. In addition, five schools have received new middle/junior high school classroom buildings and all school playgrounds have been upgraded. Plans are currently in motion to build a new junior high building at the one remaining school that has not received modernization once additional funding is received from the State of California.

Whoo’s Eyes?

The eyes are an amazing part of the human and animal body.

I wanted to make this issue’s article light hearted while demonstrating that vision is a remarkable function of the living body and mind. Varying statistics report that 40 to 60% of the brain is dedicated towards vision.

Amazing for two little spheres roughly half the diameter of a golf ball.

Here are some amazing things about the human eye:

Now for some interesting things in nature:

• The cornea is the clear part of the front of the eye and the only tissue that does not have blood vessels, which is why it is clear.

All babies are color blind when they are first born.

• The giant squid has the largest eyeball on Earth measuring 18 inches across.

• The most active muscles in your body are the ones that control your eyes.

• Photoreceptors in the back of the eye are responsible for collecting the light and converting it to a signal to the brain.

• Each eye has over 126 million photoreceptors. The human eye can distinguish 500 shades of gray.

• To describe human facial proportions, Leonardo Da Vinci believed the space between the eyes should equal the width of one eye.

• Humans blink about 10,000 times per day. A person can still have depth perception with just one eye.

• Everyone has blue eyes, it’s the amount of melanin or pigment cells that give people varying shades of color, including green, hazel, and brown.

• Each eyeball has 6 muscles that help it look around, 3 different nerves are responsible for conducting a total of 12 eye muscles sop the eyes work together.

• Cats, deer and other animals that have shiny or reflective eyes have a special layer inside called tapetum. This layer helps to reflect light that was not absorbed back into the eye so that night vision is improved.

• An ostrich eye is only 2 inches in diameter and larger than it’s brain.

• An owl can see a mouse moving more than 150 feet away with light no brighter than candlelight.

• A worm has no eyes at all.

• Dolphins and whales sleep with one eye open, and only half of their brain sleeps at a time so they can watch for danger.

• Sharks have up to three eyelids but they do not blink. The third eyelid is translucent and slides over the eye to protect it when biting down on the prey.

• Eagles can see a rabbit about 1 mile away due to their special retinas.

As you can see there are many variations of the eye in the living world and amazing to see how each set of eyes can function for different purposes. Hope you have enjoyed the hodgepodge of facts and can appreciate what your eyes can do for you.

Do you have pain?

Are you tired? Do you need to “detox”?

Many of us spend endless hours and energy searching for the missing puzzle piece to our health. Do you realize that if you “don’t unplug your exhaust pipe” your engine may not run? magine a mall. The garbage is collected into huge bins, the garbage trucks come and take it away. What if the highways are jammed and the full trucks can’t leave and new trucks can’t come? Eventually the janitor’s closet will be full of garbage, then the hallways, and eventually the back area of the stores. After awhile, when you walk into a store, you will see the garbage. You will know something is wrong, but you might think it is the store’s fault.

Over time, not only will you see the garbage, you may not see much merchandise. If the garbage trucks can’t leave, there is less room for delivery trucks. Since the halls and stores are full of garbage, there is no where to put “the good stuff”. The stores can’t function and soon the mall may shut down.

What does this have to do with you and your body? Did you know that each day – EACH DAY – your body is exposed to ~50,000 chemicals. These can be from water, food, air, cleaning chemicals, buildings, etc.? You might breath, eat or touch them. In addition to chemicals or toxins from outside the

body, some are made in the body. Toxins also include “bad energy”, electromagnetic pollution, and stress. Some of our bodies are better than others are getting rid of these toxins, but once toxins or poisons start accumulating, they can affect various parts of our bodies.

Elson Haas, MD says, “I believe that fasting/cleansing/ body detoxification is the missing link in Western nutrition, and if we used this process more in our daily lives and our medical system, we could HEAL and PREVENT a great deal of disease.” (emphasis mine) Start with the “highways” out: excrement (bowel movement), urine, sweat, skin oil, exhaled air, tears and emotional release. Learn how to open these exits and you may start feeling well!

Each person is different. What works for you may or may not work for someone else. What works for them may even be dangerous for you. You do need to spend time and energy searching for the missing puzzle piece to your therapy; maybe that piece is detoxifying BEFORE you add more “good stuff”.

Consult with a team of practitioners. These are only ideas to help you formulate a plan for yourself.

Removing Barriers to Success What is your biggest fear? Earthquakes, terrorism, dying??? Surveys show more people fear public speaking than any of these.

What can you do about it? There is a solution. It’s an organization called Toastmasters International and it’s available to everyone.

Toastmasters International is a worldwide organization with millions of members and thousands of clubs.

There are 119 clubs in San Diego County and one of them is right here in Santee.

Every Friday morning at 7:25, the Real Orators chapter meets at the Santee Chamber of Commerce office. The meetings are fun and educational. Members are encouraging and supportive.

Members are given the opportunity to speak in a small group setting, at their own pace. They receive immediate feedback from other members and learn to give feedback.

Toastmasters International provides educational materials to help members learn and succeed. They also have awards for reaching various levels of speaking and leadership.

If Friday mornings don’t work for you, go to www.toastmasters. org and find a club that meets your needs and your schedule. There are new clubs forming in several parts of San Diego and you could become a charter member of one of those. Many companies have their own clubs for employees only. Any current member can help you start a new club.

Whether you want to communicate better with your employees or become a standup comedian, Toastmasters can help. Whether you want to run for public office or just do a presentation for your favorite organization, Toastmasters has the resources for you to succeed.

The Sport Clips Haircuts store in Santee opened in January 2009 and has been a local favorite ever since.

“Although we are not a sports bar, Phil’s has top-level audio visual equipment in the bar, including an 80” screen to watch sports,” Glick said.

“We are a fast-casual dining business model and we have full service in the bar where there are 20 taps of local micro brews.”

One of the company’s PHILosophies is to be PHILanthropic by giving back to the community. Phil’s soft spot is for agencies benefiting children, animals and military dependents. It appears Phil listened to his father on how to treat employees. They are happy and helpful offering customer service at its best. They work together like a family and many have been there for years.

At every opportunity each employee I encountered treated me like a queen. Buzz, Saul, Kinga, and Summer, the general manager who will be opening the Santee location, all made me feel like the most important person in the restaurant while buzzing around working at the crazy pace that only Phil’s employees seem to be able to do while smiling.
