HELLO SANTEE!

As the summer season draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the vibrant few months we've experienced here in Santee. As usual, this summer has been one of community, celebration, and growth, marked by the success of our annual Santee Street Fair and the many local activities that brought our residents and visitors together. The fair, traditionally held over Memorial Day weekend, kicked off the summer with over 200 vendor booths, live entertainment, homage paid to fallen heroes, and diverse food offerings, and truly showcased the spirit of Santee. It was heartening to see so many people come out (over 30,000 for those wondering) to support our local vendors and small businesses, reaffirming the strength of our community ties. Be sure to check out the “Socializing Santee” feature on Page 32 for images from the eventful day.

As we transition into fall, I am excited about the opportunities that lie ahead. Our focus will shift towards an upcoming election season, schools being back in session and workforce development and career readiness collaborations, and our annual golf event as we augment our offerings for the day by hosting a veterans resource expo for the public alongside the tournament. As San Diego celebrates Restaurant Week in late September, in this issue, we look at some of our familyowned eateries around town and celebrate these local restaurants that have become a cornerstone of our business community. These establishments, many of which have been serving our town for decades, represent more than just places to eat. They are the heart and soul of Santee, where generations have gathered to create lasting memories over shared meals. These eateries play a crucial role in defining the character of our town. As we look forward to the fall season, I encourage everyone to continue supporting these local treasures. Let’s celebrate the families who pour their hearts into their businesses and, in doing so, make Santee a warm and welcoming place for all. Together, we can ensure that our local businesses thrive, preserving the unique charm of our town for generations to come.

Hello Santee!

CHAIR'S MESSAGE

As summer winds down we shift from a season of relaxation, adventure, beach days and family vacations to the vibrant, fresh energy of fall. I love these transitions, reflecting on the past and embracing the feeling of new beginnings, a chance to set new goals, meet new people and embark on new opportunities!

Our Chamber members were busy this summer celebrating with one another at milestone celebrations, grand openings, and networking mixers. One of these celebrations was the 15th anniversary party for our family business, Coffee Corner. We had a great evening with family, friends and so many of our customer friends! As we look back on 15 years, we recognize what a privilege it is to be a part of a business community that is so supportive of one another. The connections we’ve been able to make through The Chamber of Commerce are invaluable and we are truly grateful.

If you have a business in Santee, we’d love to invite you to join us for one of our mixers or events to get started making your own connections. In addition to networking with other business owners, there is space to chat with community leaders and representatives. If you have a new business, this is where you can get advice, support and education. If you have been a part of the business community for many years, there are so many ways to give back. You can remember what it was like at the beginning, taking a risk on your idea, waiting for customers, hoping people would see value in what you offer, and that you could support your family. This is your opportunity to encourage those who are just starting out! Connect with us to find out more about how you can get involved this year.

Here’s to a new season and the many meaningful moments ahead!

See you around Santee,

“There is something so special in the early leaves drifting from the trees–as if we are all to be allowed a chance to peel, to refresh, to start again." - Ruth

PRESERVING TRADITION AND SERVING THE FUTURE

In the bustling world of restaurants, few names resonate with the same blend of respect and admiration as that of Diah Asker. With over 30 years in the industry, this seasoned has not only mastered the art of hospitality but also cemented a legacy in community involvement and culinary excellence. In the midst of the 2020 pandemic, Diah undertook a bold endeavor - taking over a local favorite in the city - 52 East Eastery, now known as Junction 52 Bar & Grill. This decision was driven by the desire to expand one of his other successful brands, blending it seamlessly with a venue that had already won the hearts of locals. The challenge was clear: how to introduce a new concept during COVID without losing the unique charm and loyal following of the original establishment. With meticulous planning and a deep understanding of the local dining scene, Junction 52 managed to create a fusion that respects the past while embracing the future.

While maintaining the integrity of one restaurant, Diah also had an eye on growth. In August of 2021, Diah took ownership of a beloved establishment - Jimmy’s of Santee. This establishment, cherished by many locals for decades, was a cornerstone of the community, known for its home style cooking and familiar faces behind the counter. Jimmy’s had been in Santee since 1977 serving comfort dishes for breakfast, lunch and dinner. When the opportunity arose to assume ownership, Diah recognized the importance of preserving its history while breathing new life into its future.

The decision to remodel the restaurant was made with great care. Diah understood the delicate balance between honoring the past and embracing change. The physical space u1nderwent a thoughtful transformation, with modern touches enhancing the ambiance without losing the nostalgic charm that had endeared the not its patrons for so many years. But perhaps the most significant decision was to keep the same menu and staff- an acknowledgment that the heart of the restaurant lay not just in its food, but in the people who prepared and served it. By retaining the original team and continuing to serve the classic dishes that had become synonymous with the restaurant’s name, Jimmy’s of Santee ensured that the transition was seamless, and the legacy of the restaurant remained intact. Diah knew that much of the success of continuing Jimmy’s legacy was dependent on the current staff who made it so special. Keeping the current staff and safeguarding their work environment during a time where much uncertainty still lingered from the ever-changing shifts of the pandemic was a huge win for everyone. Diah says, “The importance of maintaining the integrity of Jimmy’s reputation was a real draw for my interest in the restaurant. A family restaurant is more than just a business—it's a legacy. As the next owner, my goal is to honor the traditions and values that built this place while ensuring it remains a cherished gathering spot for our community. It's about preserving the heart and soul of what makes this restaurant feel like home." The Santee Chamber of Commerce realized that not only Diah saving a landmark restaurant, not undergoing a name change and maintaining an inherited staff, was really something worth recognizing. Diah proudly accepted the 2021 Community Impact Awards in early 2022 at the Chamber’s Business Awards Night celebration.

This award is only given to select businesses who have made a substantial impact on our community over the previous year after a select volunteer committee had determined great value in your contributions made not only with the Chamber, but overall in the community.

Beyond the walls of the restaurants, Jimmy’s of Santee and Junction 52 have been a steadfast supporter of the local community. Whether it’s through supporting local charities, sponsoring community events or offering a gathering place for neighborhood meetings, Jimmy’s of Santee and Junction 52 have made it clear that the restaurants are more than just places to eat- they are integral parts of the community. This deep involvement is a reflection of genuine belief in the power of community. By participating in local initiatives and fostering relationships with customers beyond the dining table, Jimmy’s of Santee and Junction 52 have built a loyal following that extends well beyond the food on the menu. “Being part of the Santee community means giving back in every way we can, whether it’s through sponsoring school teams, chamber events or simply being a welcoming space for everyone. We want the city of Santee to know that we are their home away from home” says Diah Asker.

In an industry where trends come and go, the commitment to quality, community and tradition remains timeless. Jimmy’s of Santee and Junction 52 journey is far from over, and the path forward is one that promises continued success, growth and most importantly, a lasting connection with the people who make it all possible.

BEYOND THE NOTES: THE STAUMP MUSIC SCHOOL EXPERIENCE FOR MY CHILDREN

Enrolling my children at Staump Music School has truly transformed their lives, and I’m excited to share our positive experience. For my 13-year-old daughter, Mackenzie, it all began when she was just 6 years old with the East County Youth Choir, a fantastic program sponsored by Staump Music School. This early start led to her eventually taking weekly piano and voice lessons, and the results have been remarkable.

Ms. Erin’s patient and nurturing approach to piano has not only helped Mackenzie develop her musical skills but has also built her confidence. Similarly, Ms. Emily’s supportive and encouraging style in voice lessons has made a significant difference in her musicality and stage presence. The teen years are a time of change, figuring out values, identity, and friendships. Providing an outlet where a child’s interests and talents can be nurtured is paramount to a smoother transition to young adulthood. Thanks to their dedication, Mackenzie is now navigating her teenage years with pride and a sense of belonging, surrounded by a community that shares her passion for music and encourages her to pursue other interests as well.

The benefits of music extend beyond the stage. Despite early academic struggles in elementary school during a global pandemic, the discipline and focus she gained from her music lessons have helped her unlock new pathways for learning, resulting in noticeable improvements in her academics. She’s now a consistent Principal’s Honor Roll student and is bilingual in English and Spanish.

My 9-year-old daughter, Annaliese, has also thrived at Staump Music School. Her weekly drum lessons with Mr. Tim have been exceptional. Mr. Tim’s patience and consistent support have instilled valuable skills like focus and perseverance, which are clearly reflected in other areas beyond her time in the studio.

Staump Music School has been a fantastic place for both of my children. When the time comes, my youngest daughter will also join Staump Music School. The investment in music lessons has proven to be much more than just learning notes. The encouragement from a supportive community and caring educators has not only enhanced their musical abilities but has also contributed to their personal growth. The positive changes we’ve seen underscore the profound impact of a high-quality music education.

MY HOMETOWN

LOCAL ROOTS OF BILL MOTTOLA AND SANTEE’S BROKEN YOLK CAFÉ

Santee has always been more than just a place for Bill Mottola; it’s a community that has shaped his personal and professional life. “Me and my brothers all went to Santana High School and a ton of my nieces and nephews as well. My family ran Santana National Little League for decades,” Bill shares, reflecting on his deep ties to the area. The Mottola family’s connection to Santee runs deep, extending from local sports to business and beyond.

Bill’s early career began at Jimmy’s Restaurant, where he started as a busboy. This foundational experience ignited his passion for the restaurant industry. “I started at Jimmy’s Restaurant as a busboy when I was 15 years old and now I’m part of owning six Broken Yolk’s,” he says. His journey from those early days to becoming a key player in the Broken Yolk Café chain illustrates his dedication and hard work.

The Original Broken Yolk Café, established in 1979 in Pacific Beach, San Diego, has become a cherished part of Southern California’s dining landscape. Known for its exceptional breakfast, brunch, and lunch offerings, the café has garnered a loyal following. The Santee location of the Broken Yolk Café, situated in Trolley Square, opened in 2022, bringing this beloved dining experience to the heart of the community. It offers a range of services including pickup, delivery, and a specialized catering menu. The café’s hours are 7 AM to 2 PM from Monday to Thursday, 7 AM to 2:30 PM on Fridays, and 7 AM to 3 PM on weekends.

Outside of his professional endeavors, Bill Mottola enjoys a rich personal life. Married to his wife Dana since 1989, whom he met at a 7-11, Bill and Dana have three adult daughters: Amanda, Chelsea, and Tara. They also manage a 400acre ranch in Dulzura, known affectionately as Mottola Ranch, alongside Bill’s brother Steve, his wife Edie, and his niece Ashley. Bill’s background includes a long career in the wireless industry as a corporate sales representative with Sprint, and he is a passionate fan of SDSU basketball, the San Diego Padres, and the Philadelphia Eagles. His love for concerts further highlights his vibrant personality.

Santee remains a cornerstone of Bill’s life, where he continues to contribute to the community through both his business ventures and personal connections. The Broken Yolk Café’s presence in Santee not only enriches the local dining scene but also symbolizes Bill Mottola’s journey from a young busboy to a respected business owner.

5 WAYS TO CELEBRATE

Voting is one of the most powerful tools we have to shape our community, our state, and our country. As election season approaches, it's important to recognize the impact each vote can have on issues that affect our daily lives, from local policies to national decisions. This Election Day is not just a civic duty—it's a chance to celebrate our democracy, our voice, and our future. Here are five ideas on how to help yourself before voting, because heading to the polls is a cause for celebration!

1. Research Candidates and Issues

Look into the backgrounds, platforms, and past performance of candidates running for office. Study the details of any ballot measures or propositions.

2. Attend Forums and Debates

Participate in or watch candidate forums, debates, and town hall meetings to hear directly from candidates and understand their positions.

3. Read Diverse News Sources

Follow multiple news outlets with varying perspectives to get a wellrounded view of political issues and candidate stances.

4. Review Voting Records

Examine the voting records of incumbents to see how they have previously voted on key issues.

5. VOTE

You’ve registered, researched and reviewed and now you are ready! Submit your ballot by mail or show up to make your mark on history come Tuesday, November 5th.

SOCIALIZING SANTEE

This year, the Santee Chamber of Commerce was proud to support the educational and career aspirations of local students by awarding scholarships to outstanding individuals. Among the recipients is Jack Barrett, an 8th grader from the Santee School District, who was recognized as the Academic Achievement overall winner. Jack’s dedication to his studies earned him welldeserved recognition from both his school and the community.

In addition to celebrating academic excellence, the Chamber awarded four high school students with the Santee Skilled Trades Award. These students, from Santana and West Hills High Schools, each received a $1,000 scholarship to support their pursuit of trade school education after graduation, given at each of the school’s senior awards ceremonies. With interests spanning careers such as auto mechanics, hairdressers, firefighters, and more, these scholarships will help them develop valuable skills in their chosen trades. The Santana recipients (now graduates) were Brayden Cerecedes, Jayden Sasser, Raiden Kahanu Van, and Kendall Vickery and the recipients from West Hills were Aniya Hines, James Jackson, Brendan Riley Obuljen, and Savannah Smith.

The Santee Chamber of Commerce is committed to investing in the future of local students, supporting both traditional academics and the skilled trades that play a vital role in the community. These opportunities were made possible by the many community donations and business supporters from our Party with a Purpose event last December. We congratulate all of this year’s recipients and look forward to seeing their contributions in the years ahead.

Welcome to Santee, Trader Joe’s

After so much anticipation, Santee has finally welcomed Trader Joe’s to our community! Trader Joe’s has a history rooted in California, with their first location opening in Pasadena in 1967. Since then, they have expanded to almost 600 locations across 43 states and territories!

Trader Joe’s is known for their curated inventory, but what you may not know is that they do so in a way to bring you delicious and unique items at the lowest price they can. They buy directly from suppliers when possible, eliminate supplier fees, and don’t utilize any “loyalty” or coupon campaigns so that every person who enters Trader Joe’s has the same access to the same great deals! And, if you find yourself stuck in a rut for what to make for dinner, their website provides hand-picked recipes made with in-store ingredients so you can meal-plan and grocery shop in one fell swoop.

Trader Joe’s has also made very apparent their dedication to supporting our community. Though they took some time to make their way to Santee, they have made their entry to our community with intentionality. This store’s interior is decorated with local landmarks showing what makes East County great, including our very own Santee Lakes. Also, through their Neighborhood Shares Program, 100% of the unsold, but still fit to enjoy, products will be donated to a range of non-profit, community-based organizations! The store is also slated to hire 80 new Crew Members from the surrounding areas, in addition to lateral transfers from neighboring Trader Joe’s.

So, on behalf of the John Olsen Real Estate Team: Welcome to Santee, Trader Joe’s!

THREE DECADES OF TRADITION

THE OMELETTE FACTORY IS 30 YEARS STRONG IN SANTEE

For 30 years, The Omelette Factory has been a cornerstone of the Santee community, serving up freshly-made, hearty meals that locals and visitors alike can't resist. Originally located on the west side of Mission Gorge Road, it was known for it’s large dining area and was often home to several safety meetings for larger employers in the area. This beloved family-owned restaurant moved to its current home at Santee Station on Magnolia Avenue with its updated interior and patio seating options, but since 1994, the Giforos family has worked tirelessly to build this popular eatery, where every customer is treated like family.

Known for its generous portions of omelettes, sandwiches, salads, hamburgers, and daily breakfast and lunch specials, The Omelette Factory has earned a loyal following. "What better way to start your day than with a hot, fresh cup of coffee?" says co-owner Peter Giforos. The restaurant takes pride in offering not only freshly brewed coffee but also house-made muffins, biscuits, soups, and dressings. Everything on the menu is carefully selected and prepared fresh daily, ensuring every meal is top-notch.

The menu hasn't changed much over the years—why fix what isn’t broken? Loyal customers keep coming back for the same dishes they've loved for decades. And it's the customers who have been the key to The Omelette Factory's success. Their unwavering support, from morning coffee stops to family celebrations, has allowed the restaurant to flourish. Regulars who have been dining here for years have become an integral part of the restaurant’s story, and the staff knows many of them by name.

One of the restaurant's unique touches comes from the family’s roots—some of the sauces served today still use recipes handed down from Peter's mother. These cherished recipes, made with love and tradition, add a special flavor that customers can’t find anywhere else.

Whether it’s breakfast with the family or lunch with friends, The Omelette Factory continues to be the go-to spot for many in Santee. Frequented by the mayor, men’s ministry groups, political advocates, sports teams, and families, the restaurant has become more than just a place to eat—it’s a community hub. With three decades of tradition behind it, The Omelette Factory remains a casual, familystyle restaurant where excellent service and great-tasting food are guaranteed. As Santee continues to grow, this local favorite continues to thrive, serving up smiles and memories alongside every meal.

Peter is quick to acknowledge that the restaurant's success wouldn’t be possible without the loyal customers who have supported them throughout the years. "Our customers are the backbone of everything we do," he says with gratitude. Their continued patronage, whether they're stopping by for a quick breakfast or gathering with loved ones, is what has kept The Omelette Factory thriving for three decades.

Peter and the Giforos family hold deep respect and admiration for the community that has embraced them, and they look forward to continuing to serve their beloved customers for many years to come.

Visit them soon at 8860 N. Magnolia Avenue, starting at 6am daily and until 2pm Monday through Friday or until 3pm on Saturdays and Sundays.

SOCIALIZING SANTEE

THE SANTEE STREET FAIR

More than 30,000 visitors attended the Santee Chamber’s annual Santee Street Fair over Memorial Day weekend. As Santee’s largest one-day event, we were proud to start our day by honoring the sons of a fallen soldier, as we paid tribute to the real reason we have the holiday. We want to give a special thanks to Cole and Cade Bury who allowed us to share their father’s story and honor his memory with the crowd. Our 13th annual street fair boasted a craft beer garden for our 21+ crowd and hosted live entertainment from Deano’s Pub and local singer/songwriter, Miranda Ramos.

In addition, attendees were able to view over 200 vendor booths, purchase food and beverages, learn about home services, visit with their favorite local businesses and service organizations and purchase some of the many amazing products offered. There was also an interactive kids’ area with various carnival rides, games and prizes to win.

A large community stage provided continuous live music and performances, with local radio personality Clint August as the MC, continuing our tradition of having him as our guest host of the day. After opening ceremonies with our military tribute, flag from the Santee Fire Department hoisted overhead, National Anthem sung by high school student Rylie Cunning and Pledge of Allegiance lead by the Gene Michonski from the American Legion Post 364, Clint then welcomed various acts performed by Staump Music School, Expressions Dance and Movement Center, performing arts groups from West Hills High School, Trad Am Karate, Singer Songwriter Dylan Razwick, DD Cheer Factory and West Hills High School Guitar Club.

The Santee Street Fair is a testament to the vibrant and connected community we have here. It's an incredible opportunity for local businesses to showcase their offerings and for residents to come together in celebration. This event highlights the strength and unity of our community, and we are proud to see so many local businesses and families participating. We’d like to thank the staff, volunteers and all participants and attendees who continue to make this event a success each year. And of course, a big thanks to some of our key sponsors from the day including Pepper Farm Deli, ImageOn, iSquad Repair, Sycuan Resort Casino, Waste Management, Expressions Dance & Movement Center, Staump Music School, Carlton Oaks Golf Course, Alison Construction, Raceway Electric & Solar, Momentum Tutoring, Goodman Orthodontics, and of course, the City of Santee, all who make the day possible. The Santee Chamber of Commerce works with local businesses and other entities to create opportunities for its members to build successful businesses while enhancing economic and community development.
