Virginia Hall 2016 Chairperson of the Board Santee Chamber of Commerce

It has been a busy, wonderful year leading the Santee Chamber of Commerce. Santee Chamber has done a great job in connecting businesses and organizing fun community events. As the busy holidays approach, our business community would like to thank you for your local support and wish you and your family wonderful holidays filled with memorable moments. What is so wonderful about Santee is the small town feel. You run into friends and their families everywhere. It is a great time to visit one of our Santee Chamber family local churches such as Pathways Community Church, Sonrise Community Church, or Rise City Church to experience fellowship and reflect on the true meaning of Thanksgiving and Christmas. In the hustle bustle of the season, shorten your travel time by Shopping in Santee. Check out our magazine’s special coupon section. Cut time and money by shopping at our local Walmart, G.T.M., Al’s Sport Shop, Costco, and Conceptions Children’s Resale. Going to a party, but no time to bake. Save time and grab some goodies at one of our local bakeries: Eccentric International Chefs, Nothing Bundt Cakes, Starry Lane Bakery, or Dudley’s. Celebrate New Year’s Eve at one of our generous casinos Barona, Sycuan or Acorn... or enjoy a special dinner show at Santee’s own Off Broadway Live!

Santee is getting ready to welcome the Holidays and our local businesses are looking forward to ending the year with a successful shopper’s season! As this is a time to give thanks, we also keep in mind that many in our community do not have such joy to celebrate. Organizations like the Santee Food Bank and Santee Santas are geared up for their busiest quarter of the year. Let’s make it a better season by considering ways you can help: 1. Donate time or use your talent to give back 2. Donate items of non-perishable foods or toys 3. Donate money to purchase additional items needed Donation of Time: Sign up to volunteer with either organization at SanteeSantas.org or TheSanteeFoodBank.org... or participate in the Waddle & Trot 5K & Fun Run on Thanksgiving Day by registering at Active.com and searching “waddle.” The annual run is hosted by Pathways Community Church and proceeds from the event benefit both organizations. Donation of Items: Leave your unwrapped toys or non-perishable food items at the Chamber office (10315 Mission Gorge Road) Monday-Thursday 8:30 am-4:30 pm or look for bins around the community. The Santee Food Bank (10925 Hartley Rd Suite J) is open Wednesdays and Fridays from 8:30-11 am or donate at the Chamber’s Taste of Santee (page 17). Donation of Money: Both of these organizations accept monetary donations online. SanteeSantas.org/Contribute TheSanteeFoodBank.org/Donate Thank you for your help in bettering our community. We look forward to meeting you and getting to know you throughout the year!

Capture the Spirit at the Santee Holiday Lighting Celebration Kids on plastic saucer sleds sliding down a slippery snow bank. Costumed carolers harmonizing with full-throated fervor. A 20-foot-tall artificial tree decorated with a kaleidoscope of colored lights and reflective ornaments. These are just a few of the sights and sounds brought to life at Santee’s Holiday Lighting Ceremony, scheduled for Friday November 18 from 5:30-8:30 p.m. at Santee Trolley Square Shopping Center. “If you’re looking for the perfect setting to snag some family holiday photos or video, don’t miss this event,” said Bree Humphrey, special events supervisor with the Santee Community Services Department. “Bring the kids and help us kick off the start to a warm and cheery holiday season.” Community Services has produced this event for the past 13 years, making refinements along the way to ensure an enjoyable experience for families. There’s no admission charge. Most of the attractions are free, including craft booths, face painting, an inflatable bounce house, a train ride and a petting zoo. A balloon twister and caricature artists also add to the fun. There will be booths to browse and samples from local eateries, including free hot cocoa. Horse-drawn trolley and wagon rides also are free for the first time this year. Children will be able to confide their wish lists to Santa Claus. Studio-quality photos with the jolly guy are available for purchase. 4 The Santee Magazine

At the amphitheater, live music with a holiday twist will be provided by the ever-popular Bayou Brothers performing on the California Coast Credit Union Stage. The treelighting ceremony, which begins at 6:15 p.m. will include a brief sparkler display. Local merchants and community organizations seem to relish the opportunity to reach out to the community during the event. “Santee’s Holiday Lighting is one of our very favorite events that we look forward to and are proud to be a part of every year,” said Rosanna Baluca, Santee Branch Manager for California Coast Credit Union. “It’s a wonderful way for families to spend an evening enjoying the spirit of the holiday season and it truly offers something for every age,” she said. “For us at California Coast Credit Union, it’s always such a fun-filled evening visiting with our friends and neighbors in East County and an opportunity to support this great community.” Roughly 6,000 people attend the event, so parking will be challenging for late-arriving guests. Getting there by walking, carpooling, bicycle or the trolley is highly recommended. The event is sponsored by Waste Management, City of Santee, California Coast Credit Union, KIMCO, Fireworks America, Rise City Church, Daphne’s California Greek Restaurant, and Allegiance Heating & Air Conditioning. Starlight Circle The Most Enchanting Neighborhood in Santee Are you ready to experience a magical holiday tour? If you are, Starlight Circle (aka Glendon Circle) is just for you. Located off North Magnolia, just past Santana High School, the Sunburst Santee housing community glistens with holiday cheer. Homes are decorated with magnificent displays that truly embody the holiday spirit. All of the displays are unique, many handmade and most are theme oriented. The holiday lights in all their glory are breathtaking; some are even synchronized to music. You can see horse drawn carriages and limousines making their way down the streets along with many other vehicles. But, if you get a chance, it’s best to walk the circle. The residents are so friendly and eager to share the joy of the holiday season with you. Families and friends sit by toasty fire pits in their drive ways with many having delectable delights for purchase, including homemade chocolate cookies, hot chocolate, kettle corn, and many other treats to enhance your experience. Since the 1980s, this little community within Santee has entertained revellers and seekers of the holiday spirit. Many believe they are part of a homeowner’s association that requires participation. However, that is a myth. These

homeowners do it because they love the Holiday Season and all it has to offer. They surely are appreciative of the recent advances of LED lighting, which will decrease the expense of keeping this neighborhood lit throughout the holiday season. Many families continually add onto their displays delighting those who come year-after-year with new and expanded displays. Beginning shortly after Thanksgiving you will see, oneby-one, these magical displays of Santa Claus, Nativities, Scooby Doo, Mickey Mouse, Star Wars, Sponge Bob, and many more come alive. The official viewing season is the month of December from 6-10 p.m., ending the day after Christmas. The Saturday prior to Christmas you might even see Santa Claus there to enchant the little ones. For some families, it has become a holiday tradition to come together for a night of magic at Starlight Circle. If you haven’t experienced it yet, put it on your To Do List. You can access Starlight Circle via Tomel Court off North Magnolia or Josie Jo Lane off El Nopal. Enjoy the spirit of the Holidays! TSM – Sandy Pugliese

The Santee Lakes Recreation Preserve, owned and operated by Padre Dam Municipal Water District, is a beautiful and award-winning regional preserve with over 190 acres of parkland. Visited by over 750,000 guests annually, Santee Lakes is a premier destination in the East County of San Diego. Santee Lakes is also unique in the park and recreation industry as it does not receive tax subsidies. As a selfsufficient enterprise operation, Santee Lakes relies on Holiday 2016 7

A Novel Idea - Friendly Bookstore Gives Back Once upon a time there was a little town in East County San Diego. It had one road leading into it, Mission Gorge Road, and lots of farms and cows and trees. Then it began to grow. And grow. And grow. Now, it is a first-rate community called Santee. It’s home to nearly 55,000 people and their businesses and schools and sadly, traffic. For over 100 of its years, Santee has also had a library. The Friendly Used Bookstore sells used books and supports the longstanding Santee library. In addition to this valuable mission, they have adopted a new cause: a new Santee Library building! The current library space is leased and has about 9,000 square feet. With the growing population of Santee and usage of the Library, it should have 20,000 square feet. The Friendly Used Bookstore hopes to help achieve that goal and ensure the library can continue to provide all the services and programs currently offered as well as offer additional ones. There are more than just books on shelves at the Library. There are many well-attended children’s programs. Kids can attend to get their first taste of education while singing, clapping, and being read a story. What a wonderful start for all those budding scientists, engineers, and future leaders! As the children grow, more programs are offered

to keep their interest in all areas and provide them a safe place to establish friendships and develop their skills. Additionally, there are programs for parents, job-seekers, gardeners, and yoga students as well as concerts and craft sessions. Within a year, the Santee Library hosted 935 programs with 26,986 attendees! That averages out to nearly 30 people attending each program which is one of the highest averages in the County’s Library system. Books, movies, and magazines are available to borrow. A recent circulation statistic was 546,655 items checked out! Computers are available for use… the devices many people think will replace libraries in the future. The Santee Library hosted 47,848 internet sessions within one year! Santee’s Library offers free access to all these things! There is nothing like it anywhere else in the city! It’s a great resource that can grow and adapt with the city. Support your Friendly Used Bookstore. Visit the library. And support the drive for a new building…one that reflects the BEST of Santee! highly trained and caring instructors assures that each student fully understands key concepts before moving on to the next.

We operate on the core belief that virtually any child can become great at math. The Mathnasium Method, implemented at more than 700 centers in the U.S. and abroad, is a unique program that provides each child with a customized learning plan and personalized instruction in a way that makes sense to them. We focus solely on math, so we know how to teach it in a way that really connects with kids. Children at Mathnasium quickly learn that math can be fun and interesting as well as extraordinarily useful, both in terms of succeeding in school and for the valuable life skills it provides. We are thrilled to be able to bring our Mathnasium to the parents and children of Santee.

Importantly, the Mathnasium Method includes a number of approaches to make math fun and interesting. It uses a unique combination of mental, verbal, visual, tactile and written techniques to help students really understand math and has been developed over more than 40 years with thousands of students.

The Mathnasium experience begins with a highly detailed assessment of each child’s strengths and weaknesses, which is then used to create a customized learning plan. Personalized instruction from Mathnasium of Santee’s

Rather than sending children home with additional homework, Mathnasium of Santee focuses on teaching children what they need to know while they are present at the center. Santee Young Professionals

Connect • Develop • Thrive The Santee Chamber of Commerce is proud to announce that East County’s first Young Professional group is now underway! This group, known as the Santee Young Professionals (SYP), has a goal of developing San Diego’s young business leaders and entrepreneurs. The Santee Young Professionals began with the help of Santee Chamber of Commerce Staff and Board of Directors, with special assistance by Sarah Wood, Dustin Trotter, Rosanna Baluca, Kyle Whissel, Darcy Fagerwold, and Dustin Hayes. In this age of social media and technology, it is easy for young people in the business world to become separated from the old-school techniques of classic networking to build professional relationships. The Santee Young Professionals hope to provide a platform to develop San Diego’s young business leaders and entrepreneurs through education, community service, and networking. To become involved with the group, you must be an owner or employee of a Santee Chamber member business. Not a Chamber member yet? No problem, you can come check out an event to see if your company may be interested in joining. The group’s first event was their Kickoff at Santee Lakes on Tuesday, October 25. The event’s Presenting Sponsor was the Santee Lakes Recreation Preserve. Held under the gazebo with views of Lake 1 and Lake 2, the evening began with perfect weather and as the night went on the gazebo lit up with twinkling lights. As attendees arrived they were given color coded name tags. Networking was encouraged through bingo cards which attendees filled out by gathering information from individuals based on their color-coded name tags. Music provided by TNT Entertainment filled the background while attendees enjoyed refreshments including beverages provided by Groundswell Brewing Company and Oggi’s Pizza and Brewing Company. To

document the evening, the guests had use of a photo area stocked with props including a specialized Instagram sign. Guests even had the opportunity to use a custom Snapchat filter to send photos of the night’s activities to their acquaintances. Elected official’s representatives came out to commemorate the beginning of the group and the individuals who were at the forefront of the project. The Young Professionals hope to continue their growth by having monthly events including Lunch and Learn style mixers and evening casual networking events to be called “Sip with SYP.” Wednesday, December 7 will serve as their first Lunch and Learn at Marieta’s Fine Mexican Food in Santee with Karie Kaufmann of ActionCOACH speaking on the 4 Keys to Generating Quality Leads. Join the group to learn the tips and tools to rev up your lead generation and get a surge of new business. You will leave this powerful, no nonsense workshop knowing: • The steps to effectively differentiate yourself from your competition so you can attract the right prospects • How to stretch your marketing budget to get maximum return • How to compete based on value, not price Since 2005, Karie Kaufmaan, owner of ActionCOACH Business Coaching, has coached over 500 business owners to achieve their goals and take their business to the next level. Her clients report an average of 31% increase in revenues year after year, accomplished through improvements in sales, marketing, team development, and efficient systems. Neighbors Helping Neighbors We are neighbors helping neighbors, committed to ensuring that no one in our community goes hungry. Together we can achieve this mission. As a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization we depend on the generosity of our community for donations of food, volunteer time, and funding. We provide food to 400-500 mid-to-low income households in Santee each month. Our client breakdown consists of 30% families with children, 32% couples and singles, 30% senior citizens and the remaining 8% are homeless. Staffed by 25-30 core volunteers who generously give of their time and talents, collectively, these citizens donate an amazing 15,000 hours a year of their time. All monetary donations support the mission of the Santee Food Bank and there are no paid positions in the organization. One of the most significant needs the Santee Food Bank presently has is funding for the ongoing construction of our new, permanent and larger facility. Last year’s opportunity to move to a new permanent location has

become a reality as two donated portable classrooms have been moved to the construction site and work has begun. To date, we have completed several components of the project but we still need help with the following: • Retrofitting the interior space to suit our needs, including but not limited to re-enforcing the floor to carry the load of heavy refrigeration units and food products. • Obtaining mandatory permits. • Installation of water, sewer and electrical power. • Construction of a required enclosed dumpster site. • Modifying the buildings to assure ADA compliancy to accommodate our disabled patrons and abide by federal law. Your generous financial support will help the Santee Food Bank to begin to overcome these obstacles and continue the mission of helping our neighbors by providing them with supplemental food for as long as the need exists. With gratitude for this opportunity, TSM – Marty Smotherman, Santee Food Bank Site Manager

Celebrate the Tradition of Giving

Nominate Someone Special for the Person of the Year It will soon be time to name Santee’s Person of the Year for 2016! Each year the winner of this prestigious award is named at the Santee Chamber of Commerce’s Awards Night celebration. There are always some questions about how the winner is determined, so let’s take a look at how the process works. The Person of the Year Award acknowledges an individual who has made outstanding contributions to our community through their volunteer service to the citizens of Santee. It is given annually to an individual who has made significant contributions to the community of Santee’s quality of life through their involvement in any of a variety of community activities that include: charity, service projects, educational, youth, civic, religious or other similar activities that enrich our community and its citizens. The award may reflect current contributions or those made over a longer period of time. It’s important to keep in mind that the person being nominated need not be a Santee resident! The award is for people who have made an impact on the citizens of our community—and most certainly, that person can come from outside the city as long as their good work was done for the citizens of Santee. This also provides an opportunity for business leaders and owners to be recognized for their contributions to the Santee community. Nominees can be made by anyone wishing to name a person and listing their community accomplishments. This is done via a website that is published by the Santee Chamber of

Commerce. Once the nomination period has ended, all of the nominations are reviewed by a panel at the Santee Chamber and a winner is named. The winner is selected based solely on the information provided by the person making the nomination.

Bob Grande 2013

Elana Levens-Craig 2014

It is not a contest where the person receiving the most nominations wins. It only takes one nomination for a person to be considered and to win. It is a selection process based on the merits of the accomplishments of the nominees: how have they served the community; in what way(s) have they served or affected the community; and how has the community benefited from their individual efforts? These are just a few of the questions utilized by the Committee in making their choice. As with all things, the more the nomination can tell us about the person and his/her accomplishments, the better the chances of it being the winning nomination. It is not a case of the nominee benefitting from their actions but rather how the community has benefited from their actions that decides who is given the award. The website for nominations will be active on SanteeChamber.com and full instructions will be contained on the site.

Karen Fleck 2015

If you know of someone who is deserving of this honor, please take the time to enter their name into the process. Your nomination will ensure that they are considered for this award based on their contributions to our community. TSM – Bill Pommering

The Santee Chamber of Commerce is proud to host the annual Person of the Year award! The recipient is honored at the Awards Night ceremony scheduled for March 16, 2017 and is invited to participate in several community events throughout the year.

Please consider submitting a nomination for someone deserving at: SanteeChamber.com/POY Submit your nominee by 1/20/17 for consideration of Person of the Year 2016!

Deputy Ken Collier Neighborhood Park Santee’s newest recreation site, Deputy Ken Collier Neighborhood Park, is a mere half-acre in size… however, the city has packed a lot of amenities into this pocket park located on Via De Cristina in the neighborhood east of Fanita Drive and north of Prospect Avenue. Families will be able to walk to the park and relax under the shade structure and watch their children enjoy a playground made from recyclable materials. Kids can also ride their scooters or bikes on an interactive path that simulates an auto race course. Fitness fanatics can hop on one of the outdoor exercise machines or shoot hoops on the half-court basketball court. It’s also an eye-pleasing, relaxing space to walk a dog or read a book. The City is planning a dedication ceremony in November. The park is named in honor of San Diego County Sheriff’s Deputy, Ken Collier, who was killed in the line of duty on February 28, 2010 while trying to stop a drunk driver traveling the wrong way on State Route 52 in Santee.

At a groundbreaking ceremony held in July, Sheriff Bill Gore, Supervisor Dianne Jacob and members of Collier’s family expressed their appreciation for honoring the late Sheriff’s Deputy, who was a longtime Santee resident. Designed to be environmentally friendly, the park includes drought-tolerant landscaping with native trees and shrubs, a solar-powered overhead light, a web of underground irrigation lines that will minimize evaporation and an on-site retention of storm water runoff. The neighborhood park is situated on surplus right-of-way purchased from Caltrans (California State Department of Transportation), which used a portion of the property for the construction of State Route 52. The project was partially funded by $321,000 in state and local grants, including a $64,413 Neighborhood Reinvestment Program grant recommended by Supervisor Jacob. Mailman Turns into Superman He stands 6 feet tall, weighs 250 pounds, and Sharon Braden calls him “my little angel.” She barely knows the man who delivered mail to the mobile home park where she used to live on Mission Gorge Road in Santee. But all that matters is that David Crestik saved her life. He was leaving letters at a trailer park home near the end of his mail route when he heard a beeping sound and peeked around the corner. He saw smoke coming through the screen door of another mobile home. Crestik went to investigate, saw that the door open and yelled, “Is anybody in there? A woman’s voice answered, “I’m in here.” He went in and saw that flames coming from the kitchen had ignited the dining table and chairs and were crawling up the ceiling. The smoke was so thick he couldn’t see so he called out to the woman and followed her voice until he literally stumbled over her on the floor. She couldn’t stand so he picked her up and put her over his shoulder and stumbled outside to call 911. As soon as firefighters and paramedics arrived, he called his boss to report he was running late, then he returned to his route.

Crestik was one of eight postal workers recognized nationally as heroes by the National Association of Letter Carriers recently in Washington, D.C. “He placed himself in incredible danger,” said NALC President, Fredric Rolando. “But David denies he is a hero, just calling it fortunate timing.” In accepting the award, Crestik said: “It’s not up there with firemen or policemen, but we’re a service for the community. They are our people and we’re going to take care of them.” Upon returning to San Diego, Crestik told me he never even thought about possible danger to himself. Had he not carried out Sharon Branden, though, he is sure “she would have perished. There was no one else around...the timing was God.” Branden escaped with minor cuts and was treated for smoke inhalation. Community members later chipped in to help her relocate nearby. Crestik occasionally sees her while delivering mail and stops to chat. In her eyes, though, he’ll never again be just the mailman, but rather her “little angel.” TSM – Diane Bell, San Diego Union-Tribune

We have three practitioners that are highly trained, and the center is open Monday through Saturday for a variety of services, including Massage, Acupuncture, CranioSacral Therapy, Health Coaching, Essential Oil Therapy, Reflexology, Hot Stone Massage, and more.
