HELLO SANTEE! When I stepped into the role of President & CEO in May 2025, I knew I was joining a special community, but I couldn’t have imagined just how vibrant, welcoming, and dedicated it would be. In these first few months, I’ve had the privilege of meeting business owners who have built their livelihoods here, volunteers who give their time selflessly, and community leaders deeply invested in Santee’s success. Whether sharing ideas over a morning coffee, connecting with members at city council meetings, or hosting evening mixers, I’ve been struck by the same recurring theme: people here care about each other, about our local economy, and about the future of our city.

That spirit is what makes this Fall edition of Santee Magazine so meaningful. We are celebrating 70 years of the Santee Chamber of Commerce, seven decades of supporting business, building connections, and fostering a sense of belonging. In that time, Santee has transformed from a small agricultural town into a thriving hub of commerce, education, and recreation.

Through it all, the Chamber has been both a witness to and a driver of that growth.

Our community’s strength comes from its diversity of industries and the partnerships they create. As we reflect on the past 70 years, I am inspired by how our businesses, large and small, new and longstanding, embody the Chamber’s mission to be a champion for a stronger community, a convener of leaders and influencers, and a catalyst for business growth.

I am truly honored to join this legacy at such a pivotal moment.

CHAIR'S MESSAGE Hello Santee!

As summer draws to a close, I can’t help but reflect on what an energizing and event-filled season it has been for the Santee Chamber of Commerce. From morning coffees to evening mixers, this summer was packed with networking events that brought us together to share ideas and learn from our fellow entrepreneurs.

We welcomed several new businesses to Santee with ribbon cuttings, presented scholarships to local high school students and hosted the Santee Street Fair. This annual celebration put on by Chamber staff and volunteers, showcases our local vendors, students, and the warm community spirit that makes Santee such a special place to live and work.

In August we celebrated a very special milestone: the 70th Anniversary of the Santee Chamber of Commerce. We took time to honor the generations of business owners, community leaders, and volunteer board directors, who have built this Chamber into what it is today. It was a joy to celebrate not just our history, but the people who continue to carry that legacy forward.

COMMUNITY& CONNECTION CEL EBR ATING TH E SAN TE E CHAM B E R’ S L EG AC Y From Farmland to Flourishing City: The Story of Santee Tucked in the rolling foothills of East County, Santee’s story is one of transformation, resilience, and community spirit. Long before city streets and bustling shopping centers, this land was home to the Kumeyaay people, its first stewards, who thrived here for thousands of years. Later, pioneers and ranchers worked the soil, cultivating citrus groves and tending to the wide-open spaces that defined the region.

The city’s name honors Milton Santee, a 19th-century developer whose wife inherited vast portions of the area. What began as a quiet agricultural outpost would soon find itself on the cusp of change.

After World War II, the nation’s housing boom brought waves of new families eager to settle in sunny Southern California. Schools, parks, and neighborhoods began to take shape, all while Santee managed to hold onto its rural charm. By the late 1970s, growth and civic pride led to a major milestone when Santee officially incorporated as a city.

Fast forward to today and Santee stands as a thriving hub where small-town values meet modern opportunities. Its scenic trails wind through Mission Trails Regional Park, vibrant commercial districts draw shoppers and diners, and its neighborhoods remain some of the most family-friendly in San Diego County. It is a city that has managed to honor its past while embracing a bright, forward-looking future.

The Chamber also proudly hosts the Veterans Appreciation Golf Tournament, now in its seventh year, set for November 6, 2025, at Carlton Oaks. This beloved event honors the veterans in our community offering a day of camaraderie and appreciation.

A Night to Remember: The 70th Anniversary Celebration On August 1, 2025, the Santee Chamber of Commerce marked a once-in-a-generation milestone with an evening worthy of its legacy. Hosted at Lantern Crest Senior Living, the celebration was equal parts history, gratitude, and vision for the future.

Past and present board members, elected officials, community leaders, and longtime supporters gathered under the warm summer sky to toast seven decades of commerce and connection. Historical displays showcased vintage photos, early Chamber documents, and memorabilia that told the story of Santee’s growth and lasting impact on the community.

The night was not just about looking back; it was about looking forward. The Chamber thanked the pioneers who laid the groundwork, celebrated the members who continue to invest in Santee’s future, and reaffirmed the Chamber’s commitment to championing local businesses for decades to come.

Looking Ahead Together Santee is more than a city; it is a community built on connection, hard work, and shared pride in the place we call home. The Santee Chamber of Commerce exists to serve that community by advocating for local businesses, creating opportunities for growth, and fostering relationships that strengthen our collective success.

As we look ahead, we invite every business owner, resident, and partner to be part of our mission. Your involvement and support are what allow the Chamber to thrive, and together, we will continue building a vibrant future for Santee.

MY HOMETOWN JOHN OLSEN OF JOHN OLSEN REAL ESTATE: A LIFE OF SERVICE, COMMUNITY, AND CONNECTION If you’ve lived in Santee for any length of time, you’ve likely seen John Olsen around town—maybe in his golf cart, snapping selfies at new restaurants, or interviewing a local business owner for his Facebook page.

Known as “The Santee Guy,” John is a familiar face and tireless advocate for the community he has called home since childhood. In 2024, the Santee Chamber of Commerce honored him as Person of the Year, recognizing decades of leadership, volunteerism, and dedication to making Santee a better place to live, work, and do business.

John moved to Santee in 1969 and attended local schools, graduating from Santana High School in 1983. His entrepreneurial spirit showed early, from selling homemade candy bars at age eight to running his parents’ donut shop as a young adult. This was his first introduction to the Santee Chamber of Commerce. By 2003, he had earned his real estate license, eventually becoming the owner of John Olsen Real Estate within Mission Realty Group. Recognized as one of the top 5% of producers by the Pacific Southwest Association of Realtors in 2024, John says simply, “I like to help people move, help people solve their problems.”

Beyond real estate, John has left a lasting mark on the Santee Chamber. He served on the board from 2006 to 2011 and as CEO from 2011 to 2015, helping transform the Chamber into a modern, thriving network. He launched the Santee Young Professionals group, expanded the Santee Street Fair into one of the city’s biggest events, and introduced The Santee Magazine, all of which strengthened community and business connections.

In 2015, John launched the Santee Update Facebook page, where his upbeat videos keep residents connected to local events and businesses.

He expanded his platform in 2020 with The John Olsen Show podcast, interviewing leaders and changemakers from across San Diego County.

Through these outlets, he continues to showcase the people and stories that shape the region, giving others a platform to share their work and impact.

John embodies the spirit of Santee—longevity, growth, business, and community. A longtime Chamber member and lifelong resident, he continues to invest his time, talents, and heart to ensure Santee remains a place where businesses thrive, neighbors know each other, and community pride runs deep.

Lutapaj: Wine lovers, keep your glasses ready — Santee is about to welcome its first winery and tasting room! Lutapaj, a sister-company to Horsethief Canyon Vineyards in Alpine, is setting up shop right here in town next to our office at Mission Realty on Cuyamaca St. Lutapaj will offer a unique selection of artisanal beverages crafted from Blue Agave, Manzanita, and other varietals — a refreshing and elevated twist for our local beverage scene.

While Lutapaj is still awaiting their building permit approval, the vision is in motion, and the anticipation is already bubbling. We hope to share a toast late in 2026!

Preserving the future of Carlton Oaks Country Club and Resort For decades, the greens and banquet spaces at Carlton Oaks Golf Club have been a beloved community gathering place for Santee residents, neighbors, and families and friends visiting the area.

While golf courses around San Diego County continue to be lost to redevelopment, we believe that Carlton Oaks is a valuable community resource that is important to preserve. Escalating operational and maintenance costs lead Carlton Oaks ownership to explore opportunities to save the golf course. We’ve teamed up with Lennar Homes to create the vision for the new “Carlton Oaks Golf Club and Resort” – a vibrant and integrated resort experience with enhanced recreational and residential opportunities.

The reimagined Carlton Oaks includes a new 18-hole golf course and improved on-site amenities, including an upgraded boutique hotel, new practice areas, improved tournament hall, learning center, pool, and restaurant.

These changes will help Carlton Oaks be competitive with other courses in the local region. New homes will be integrated within the golf course design and linked to the Golf Club and Resort through connective cart paths, making it possible for the new homeowners to provide year-round patronage, further assuring the economic vitality and long-term preservation of the golf course.

This golf course community has evolved since we first launched the development process back in 2019. We’ve come a long way and appreciate all the questions, comments and suggestions we’ve received.

SANTEE STREET FAIR 2025:

A COMMUNITY TRADITION THRIVES SOCIALIZING SANTEE

On Saturday, May 24th, the heart of Santee transformed into a bustling celebration as the 15th Annual Santee Street Fair & Craft Beer Festival took over Riverview Parkway.

A Festival Atmosphere The Street Fair has earned its reputation as one of Santee’s biggest traditions, and this year’s event was no exception. The streets were alive with activity: live music and performances on stage, the laughter of children enjoying carnival rides and games, and the enticing aroma of food vendors serving everything from savory bites to sweet treats.

SOCIALIZING SANTEE For the adults, the ever-popular beer garden offered a chance to sample local craft brews, wines, and spirits, while shoppers browsed an array of retail and community booths featuring everything from handmade goods to local services.

These vendors and exhibitors highlighted the diversity of Santee’s business community.

A Celebration of Community The Street Fair reflected what makes Santee special: a place where neighbors come together to support local businesses. The timing of Memorial Day weekend added significance as well, marking the start of summer and reminding all in attendance of the deeper traditions that bring us together.

Local and visiting vendors enjoyed strong engagement, families made new memories, and the Chamber of Commerce once again delivered on its mission to be a convener of leaders, a catalyst for growth, and a champion for a stronger community.

Looking to the Future As the Santee Chamber celebrates its 70th anniversary in 2025, the continued success of the Street Fair stands as a powerful reminder of its impact.

From the music and food to the beer garden, carnival rides, and vendor booths, the Santee Street Fair remains a beloved tradition that keeps growing, year after year. Judging by the energy and enthusiasm of 2025’s event, the future of this community celebration looks brighter than ever.

SANTEE NATIVE NAMED SAN DIEGO COUNT Y TE ACHER OF THE YE AR KEV I N WHI T E INSPIRE S T HE FU T U RE T HROU GH I N N OVATI ON AND HE ART The Santee Chamber of Commerce proudly recognizes Kevin White, a product of Santee schools, attending Carlton Hills, Sycamore Canyon, Carlton Oaks, and graduate of West Hills High School, as San Diego County Teacher of the Year.

Now teaching STEM in the College & Career Technical Education program at De Portola Middle School, Kevin has built a classroom that’s equal parts creativity lab and launchpad for the future. From building electric guitars to exploring computer-aided design, his students don’t just learn — they create, struggle, and grow.

Known for embracing a “culture of struggle,” Kevin encourages students to solve real problems together — skills he believes are essential in a world increasingly shaped by technology.

A graduate of San Diego State University, where he earned his bachelor’s degree, teaching credential, and master’s in Learning Design and Technology, Kevin now also teaches at SDSU as part of that same program.

From the classrooms of Santee to countywide recognition, Kevin White is a shining example of local excellence making a lasting difference.
