HELLO SANTEE! When I stepped into this role in May, I didn’t anticipate just how profoundly meaningful these first seven months would be. I believed I understood this city; it has always been the backdrop of my most cherished family memories. But this past year, I didn’t just recognize Santee, I rediscovered it and fell in love with it all over again.

I uncovered a passion I didn’t realize had been quietly waiting within me, ignited not by titles or tasks, but by people. By entrepreneurs pouring their hearts and ambition into every illuminated “open” sign and late-night effort. By visionaries investing in this community with courage and conviction. By civil servants, educators, volunteers, and neighbors who have helped transform Santee into a vibrant place we proudly call home.

Over these months, I absorbed more than procedures and policies. I came to understand the very framework of this place: its history, its aspirations, and the vibrant growth that continues to propel it forward. And somewhere between our events, ribbon cuttings, and board discussions, I didn’t simply forge professional relationships. I fostered a family.

Every handshake carried a story. Every introduction held possibility.

There are still so many voices to hear, faces to meet, and friendships waiting to grow. That thought fills my heart with gratitude and hopeful excitement for all we will continue to build and experience together.

I would like to share a special thank you to my Board of Directors for embracing bold ideas, championing innovation, and trusting this momentum from day one. Your support has propelled our vision forward with purpose and clarity. To my team, your dedication, stamina, and execution turned ideas into impact. I am so thankful for all your support and passion for what we do every day. To our volunteers, thank you for showing up, stepping in, and elevating every event we delivered.

A special thank you to our outgoing chair, Susie Parks. Your leadership, insight, and unwavering encouragement have been invaluable. I am grateful for your time, your guidance, your friendship, and your belief in what we are building.

As we move toward 2026, I am energized, ambitious, and committed to advancing the future of the Santee Chamber and the community we proudly serve. A DREAM POURED INTO

COFFEE CORNER Walk into Coffee Corner on any given morning and you are likely to find more than espresso steaming and pastries warming. You will see neighbors greeting one another by name, students wiping sleep from their eyes on their way to school, small business owners having breakfast over big dreams, and familiar faces behind the counter serving coffee with genuine warmth. At the center of it all, and at the heart of Santee’s small-business spirit, are Duane and Susie Parks.

For more than 16 years, Duane and Susie have poured more than coffee into this community; they have poured heart, intention, faith, and an unwavering belief in the power of connection. When they opened their first location in 2009, they dreamed not just of a café, but of a gathering place built on warmth, belonging, and real relationships.

Today, Coffee Corner stands as a local landmark with two thriving Santee locations: a convenient drive-thru and walk-in location on Mast & Carlton Hills offering fast yet personal service to busy commuters, and a cozy café on Town Center Parkway where breakfast conversations, business meetings, and schoolwork sessions happen side by side. In both spaces, community comes first, stories are shared, new relationships are made, and regulars are treated like family.

Brewing Excellence and Building People Before most of Santee is awake, the Coffee Corner team are already creating moments that seem small but mean everything. That care shows up in every detail, from the perfected over time signature cold brew and coffee ice cubes that never water down a cup, to year-round seasonal flavors like pumpkin spice and peppermint mocha that delight guests whenever the craving strikes.

Whether providing coffee and breakfast at the Santee Junior Olympics, MayRide for Troops, Toys for Tots, or collecting school supplies for Buddy’s Backpacks, Duane and Susie’s leadership has remained deeply rooted in service.

A Legacy of Service and Leadership at the Santee Chamber of Commerce Susie and Duane joined the Santee Chamber of Commerce in 2010 with the simple hope of building relationships and growing their new business within the community. What began as a step toward local connection quickly became a defining part of Susie’s journey as a leader. Little did she know that decision would open the door to years of service, meaningful relationships, and a deeper purpose in championing the business community she loves.

Fast forward to 2024, Susie was appointed Chair of the Santee Chamber of Commerce, a role she embraced with humility, determination, and an open heart. What followed was a leadership experience marked by service, collaboration, and genuine care for the people behind the businesses.

She proudly served the entire year of 2024 and continued her leadership through 2025, guiding, listening, and supporting the Chamber through growth, transition, and exciting new chapters.

As she passes the gavel and concludes her time as Chair, Susie’s legacy is one of generosity, connection, and deep gratitude. She has not only strengthened her own business, but she has helped strengthen the entire local business ecosystem around her.

Her time at the helm provided a unique window into the evolving needs of local businesses and the heart of Santee’s entrepreneurial spirit. In that time, she cultivated meaningful partnerships, supported new and longtime members, and championed the belief that success is greatest when shared.

Known for leading with kindness and clarity, Susie set a tone of encouragement and inclusion that invited both new entrepreneurs and seasoned business leaders to pull up a seat and become part of the Chamber family. Her impact will continue to guide the organization, serving as a reminder that leadership is not only about strategy, but about service, empathy, and showing up consistently for your community.

Looking ahead, Coffee Corner remains one of Santee’s most beloved gathering places. This is not by chance, but because Duane and Susie have shaped it with intention, integrity, and joy.

Whether at the drive-thru on Mast and Carlton Hills or in the cozy café on Town Center Parkway, the Coffee Corner family continues to greet each guest with a warm smile, a warm drink, and a sense of belonging. Every day, Duane and Susie pour their hearts into this family through service, hospitality, and unwavering love for the place they proudly call home.

MY HOMETOWN ARPAD “AJ” TOTA OF THRIVENT: CONTINUING A FAMILY LEGACY OF SERVICE TO SANTEE If you’ve attended a community event in Santee, chances are you’ve seen Arpad “AJ” Tota lending a hand or offering a word of encouragement. From his time in the United States Navy to his current work as a financial advisor, AJ has always been focused on helping others succeed. His story is one of service, legacy, and a deep commitment to ensuring Santee continues to be a place where families and businesses can thrive.

Serving Through Thrivent After retiring in 2019 from a 50-year career in IT and Project Management AJ Tota wasn’t ready to slow down. Instead, he leaned into his passion for helping others by becoming a financial advisor with Thrivent, a Fortune 500, faith-based financial services company with a 120-year legacy. Today, AJ guides families in Santee and beyond through multi-generational financial planning. “If I had known at 25 what I know now, life would’ve been very different,” AJ says. That perspective drives his work with young families, seniors, and special-needs family planning. What excites him most is that every Thrivent member also receives funds to give back to local causes, turning financial planning into community service.

Community Connections AJ has made service a lifelong priority, and his impact is woven through Santee.

He has served with Kiwanis, Rotary, and the Santee Chamber of Commerce, and is an advisor for the San Diego Center for Economic Education. As Vice President of Santee Kiwanis, AJ helps organize the annual fishing derby, scholarships, and the Youth Business Fair, and he was proud to help bring the Southern California Special Olympics back to Santee each May. Through Rotary, he contributes to global efforts like polio eradication. He also mentors students directly as a Key Club advisor at Santana High School, where he works with students each year on leadership training and community service. “My whole heart is enjoying my community and doing what I can to keep Santee family-friendly and businessfriendly,” he says.

Family and Legacy For AJ, Santee isn’t just home, it’s heritage. He and his wife Linda moved here in 1978, raised their children here, and are now proud grandparents of five, soon to be six. Their grandchildren are the sixth generation of the family in Santee, carrying forward a legacy that traces back to AJ’s wife’s relatives who were Santee residents starting in 1923. That history fuels AJ’s vision for the city’s future. “I don’t want us to be Los Angeles or North County,” he says. “I want Santee to grow, but to keep its country feel—a safe, affordable place where families can thrive.”

Today AJ loves to travel with Linda, whether cruising through the Panama canal or living in Australia for three years he always finds his way home to Santee.

5 WAYS TO CELEBR ATE The holiday season is here, and there’s no better time to enjoy all that Santee has to offer - our community has countless ways to make the season bright. Whether you’re celebrating with family, friends, or neighbors, here are five ways to embrace the holidays - Santee style.

1.

Light up the night at the City’s Holiday Tree Lighting Kick off the season at the annual Holiday Lighting Celebration at Santee Trolley Square on November 21st. Enjoy live music, snow sledding, face painting, and a visit from Santa before the big tree lighting. It’s a joyful community tradition that truly marks the start of the holidays in Santee.

Kristen’s Tip: Find the Chamber booth and your kiddo can color a free “Shop Santee” bag or visit the WM booth for a photo op with their mini truck!

Snap festive memories at “Selfies with Santa” Head back to Trolley Square for a relaxed, family-friendly photo opportunity on December 3rd. Bring your professional gear, or (like the event title suggests) pop open your cell phone camera, and capture some smiles with the big guy himself!

Kristen’s Tip: Santa is usually easy to find but just in case, look on the stage in the amphitheater in front of the holiday tree.

Wander the lights at the Starlight Circle Walk Experience one of Santee’s brightest traditions at Starlight Circle, where neighborhood homes glow with dazzling decorations. Stroll through the displays with a cup of cocoa or admire them from your car (with windows down to hear music from some of the homes!).

Kristen’s Tip: The City places portable restrooms and additional trash bins at Santana High’s parking lot near Magnolia Avenue and Second Street just for this crowd!

4.

Shop (and sip!) local this holiday season Support Santee’s small businesses while tackling your gift list. Explore shops at Trolley Square, enjoy local restaurants for catering and desserts (check out page 27 for some bonus tips!), and don’t forget to grab a festive drink from one of our cozy coffee spots.

Prioritize wellness as the year winds down Amid the holiday hustle, make time for movement. From local gyms and yoga studios to trails and parks, Santee offers countless ways to stay active and step confidently into the new year.
