HELLO SANTEE! Here we are in 2025 and it’s hard to believe March will mark my 11th year with the Santee Chamber, serving as CEO since 2019. This year, our Chamber is celebrating 70 years as a business organization.

It’s an exciting milestone that reminds me just how much our local business community has evolved, grown, and thrived over the years.

Our Chamber’s history is rich with stories of collaboration, resilience, and progress. What began as a small group of local leaders advocating for business success (even before the city’s incorporation) has blossomed into a dynamic network of professionals committed to driving economic prosperity in Santee. Through the decades, our Chamber has been a catalyst for community engagement, business development, and meaningful connections that help shape the local landscape.

While it’s fulfilling to celebrate these achievements, it’s even more important to look ahead. The success of our business community relies on continued involvement, fresh perspectives, and a shared commitment to growth. MAN BEHIND THE MISSION DANIEL BUKSA

IS SANTEE BORN AND RAISED

Daniel Buksa is a name synonymous with Santee, the community where he was born and raised. His story is one of resilience, hard work, and giving back—a true reflection of the values he learned growing up in this Southern California city. From humble beginnings to becoming a prominent figure in both the real estate world and his community, Daniel's journey is shaped by his upbringing, his career path, and his deep-rooted sense of duty to help others.

Daniel’s story begins in 1971 when his father bought their first home in Santee for $18,000—a lot of money in the early '70s, but a modest start for what would become a legacy of hard work. Raised in a lower-middle-class family, Daniel's father, a Vietnam War veteran, instilled in him the values of discipline, hard work, and service.

His father’s commitment to the community earned him the Southern California VFW Post Commander of the Year award, a title that inspired Daniel’s own dedication to service.

Daniel’s childhood was marked by a strong sense of community, with his father constantly teaching him the importance of helping others. “What can I do for you, and how can I help you?” Daniel recalls his father asking, an approach that resonated deeply with him. Growing up alongside his brother, JJ, Daniel learned valuable life lessons. From mowing lawns to painting houses, these early jobs built a solid work ethic that would serve him throughout his professional life.

At Cajon Park Elementary School, Daniel found mentorship from teachers who left lasting impressions on him.

One of his most influential mentors was Sandy Olsen, a teacher's aide with long, flowing hair, affectionately called "Sea Breeze" for the way her hair moved. Sandy stood by him when he was bullied as a child. These early experiences, combined with youth sports—where Daniel played for the Santana National Little League and the

Santee Lakeside Pop Warner football teams—taught him discipline, teamwork, and leadership. Daniel often says he’s especially proud of his time at Cajon Park, where the foundation for many of his core values was laid, even more so than his high school or college years. Today, he carries these lessons into his role as a Pop Warner football coach.

Daniel’s journey also includes his wife, Shelley, whom he met in Las Vegas over a shared plate of French fries. After more than 20 years together and 14 years of marriage, they’ve built a life filled with love, setting an example for their two incredible children, Jack and Sarah. Shelley has been an invaluable partner in Daniel’s community efforts, making sacrifices and contributing in her own way by managing the home front, allowing him to dedicate his time and energy to giving back to others.

Daniel’s professional journey began with a finance major at San Diego State University, where he also minored in real estate financial services. After graduating, he honed his sales skills working for companies like Geico and Cox Communications. It wasn’t until 2008, during a financial downturn, that Daniel realized he needed to pursue his true passion: real estate. Despite warnings from others that it was a bad time to enter the industry, Daniel took the leap in 2010 and hasn’t looked back.

In 2011, Daniel joined Keller Williams Realty, where he was named Rookie of the Year. However, he quickly realized that many agents in the industry were not as focused on treating real estate as a long-term career.

Seeking a more driven, like-minded group, Daniel decided to start his own brokerage. In 2012, he founded his own company with just three agents. Today, his brokerage, Mission Realty Group, employs over 40 agents, and Daniel’s philosophy of leading by example has played a significant role in the company’s success.

Daniel is quick to deflect attention from his own achievements, always giving credit to those around him.

Whether it’s his brother, his sister-in-law, or his dedicated team at Mission Realty Group, he believes that the successes of his business are the result of a collective effort. He is a humble leader, emphasizing that his accomplishments are not his own, but the work of a team that shares his vision and passion for service.

Daniel’s focus on creating a family-like atmosphere within his brokerage has set Mission Realty apart from others in the region. “Everyone here treats real estate like a career,” he explains. “We’ve been selective about who we let in, and by surrounding ourselves with good people, we’ve created an office full of rockstars.” This strong, supportive culture has helped both Daniel and his agents achieve success, and it reflects his belief in the power of mentorship and personal development.

Growing up in Santee, Daniel always felt a strong connection to his community, and that bond continues to drive his work today. One of his most significant motivations is to give back to the community that shaped him.

Through Mission Realty Group, Daniel has hosted over 130 events in the past year, including meetings for local PTAs, Chamber of Commerce events, and numerous charity fundraisers.

Daniel’s philanthropic efforts extend far beyond his business. Over the years, he has raised over $100,000 for local youth sports programs, including Pop Warner football teams and youth cheer squads. His heart for giving back also led him to establish the Santee Mission Foundation, a non-profit dedicated to helping local families in need. One of the most memorable initiatives was a fundraiser for a local family battling cancer. Daniel and his team raised $30,000 to support the family, demonstrating how deeply personal and impactful community involvement can be.

He also values the relationships built through his charitable work. From supporting elderly residents in mobile home parks by offering yard work and food assistance to helping children from local schools pursue scholarships, Daniel believes in the power of service. His advice to other business owners is simple: “When you meet new people, never think about what’s in it for you. If you can ask, ‘How can I help you?’ and build genuine relationships, it will come back tenfold.”

Mentorship and leadership have played a significant role in Daniel’s personal and professional life. He believes strongly in the importance of surrounding oneself with a team that complements your strengths and weaknesses. “I’m good at a few things, and I’m average at 40 or 50 things,” he says. “I focus on what I’m good at and surround myself with people who excel in areas where I don’t.” For Daniel, having a strong team is key to balancing the demands of running a brokerage while staying connected to the people and causes he cares about.

His approach to leadership reflects the values he learned from his father, a Vietnam War veteran who served his country with distinction. Like his father, Daniel has adopted a philosophy of service—whether to his clients, his team, or his community. By leading with compassion, dedication, and a commitment to giving back, Daniel has built both a successful business and a lasting legacy in Santee.

As Daniel reflects on his career and community involvement, he points to his recognition as Santee’s Person of the Year in 2018 as one of his proudest accomplishments. This honor, he notes, is not just a reflection of his hard work but also of the dedication of his team at Mission Realty Group and his family’s years of service to the community. For Daniel, it’s about leading by example and ensuring that his children see the importance of making a positive impact in the world.

Looking ahead, Daniel hopes to continue expanding the Santee Mission Foundation, with a focus on providing scholarships for local youth to attend trade schools. He is also passionate about raising funds for youth sports facilities, such as building batting cages at Santana National Little League. By honoring kids who pursue careers in trades—like plumbing, electrical work, or firefighting—Daniel wants to ensure that these careers are respected and supported.

His message to others is clear: “Don’t think about what is in it for you. Get out there and help people and it will come back tenfold.” Whether through his business, his community service, or his mentorship, Daniel Buksa is a living example of the power of giving back. As he continues to grow his brokerage and foundation, his mission remains the same: to make a lasting impact on the community he calls home.

GETTING HOOKED ON EDUCATION SDCCU’S CLASSROOM HERO - MR. STANLEY Not all heroes wear capes! San Diego County Credit Union (SDCCU) has proudly honored teachers in San Diego County for over 10 years through its Classroom Heroes program, which has recently been enhanced to honor San Diego county teachers' hard work even more during the 2024-2025 school year. During the school year, SDCCU will honor one local San Diego County teacher each month as a SDCCU Classroom Hero. Classroom Heroes will be given a $500 Visa gift card, a Classroom Hero award and their accomplishments are featured on a segment on CBS 8 and The CW in San Diego.

Recently, they honored one of Santee School District’s very own: Chris Stanley. Mr. Stanley teaches 7th grade history and language arts at Carlton Hills School. In addition to teaching history and language arts, Mr. Stanley makes an effort to give his students an opportunity to do something they wouldn't normally have access to: fishing. Mr. Stanley takes his students to Lake Cuyamaca, where he turns fishing into an underwater wildlife lesson. He learned early on in his career, if he casts a wide net, you can haul them all in! He has a no-nonsense approach to teaching. Students commend him for his high energy and ability to make them want to learn.

Principal of Carlton Hills, Tim Dobbins, who has been an educator for over 25 years, says, “He focuses on making everyday a great day to be a kid.” Also noting how he had never seen another teacher with fishing poles in his classroom. His classroom walls are lined with photos from fishing trips over the years, showcasing the many adventures he provides for kids to have a special experience and opportunity to be outdoors. Mr. Stanley loves giving the students a chance to see something they might not otherwise see themselves. Many students claimed Mr. Stanley to be their favorite teacher, and one they will never forget. Another even suggested the fishing trips help him as a student because it’s a stress reliever for when other things aren’t so great in life. When Mr. Stanley was asked why he takes so many kids fishing, simply put, he replied, “Why not?” while happily gazing over the kids in his class at that time, then saying they are that “aha moment”. This year, Mr. Stanley will be taking over 5,000 students fishing!

MY HOMETOWN BRYAN KOCI STRENGTHENING COMMUNITY THROUGH CONNECTION Since 2009, Bryan Koci has called Santee home. Originally from El Cajon, he was drawn to the city through his connection to West Hills High School and the strong community he built there. Through Santee Chamber Mixers, he formed relationships with local businesses and leaders, deepening his appreciation for the area. His now-wife, Victoria—who was Miss Santee at the time—introduced him to many community events, further solidifying his love for the city. For Bryan, the best part of Santee is the people. He values the community’s authenticity, where individuals support one another without pretense. One of his family’s favorite traditions is attending the summer concerts, an event that fosters togetherness and fun.

As part of Whissel Realty Group, Bryan emphasizes a family-oriented, collaborative environment. His team is dedicated to pushing boundaries in real estate while maintaining strong ties to the community. The most rewarding part of his work is helping first-time homebuyers start their journey to homeownership, build wealth, and establish roots in East County. Although he grew up in El Cajon, Bryan proudly states that when he had the choice, he chose Santee. From his high school years to his career and family life, he remains committed to the community he loves, making a lasting impact through his business and volunteer work.

Beyond business, Bryan serves as a board member of the Santee Chamber of Commerce and has supported his children through various local programs, including t-ball, soccer, and dance. Balancing work and personal life is challenging, but Bryan emphasizes setting clear expectations with clients, colleagues, and family to maintain harmony. His guiding principle is doing the right thing, even when it's difficult. He believes that stepping back and asking, “What is the right thing to do?” always leads to the best long-term outcomes. His advice to aspiring business owners is simple: Get involved, meet people, and help others without expecting anything in return.

Santee Street Tree Program Make Santee greener by taking part in our Street Tree Program!

Trees are a vital piece of Santee’s infrastructure contributing to energy savings, filtering stormwater runoff and enhancing property values. Santee residents with a parkway in front of their house are eligible to participate in the Street Tree Program. The program is completely free for all qualifying Santee residents. The City will plant and trim the approved tree at no cost to the resident; the resident just needs to water the tree.

The City will work with each resident to help select a tree that best fits the parkway width and the residents needs/desires.

Santee Real Estate Update Midway through February, the market is waking up after the holidays. New listings and active inventory are on the rise, pending sales are up, and we anticipate to see this continue at least through Spring.

In Santee, there are a lot of homes that remain with one family over decades, whether that’s a couple living in the home they bought in the 80s, or children who inherited a home that they kept as a rental. We are now seeing these homes enter the market as tired landlords and legacy owners are gaining access to the equity that’s been built over decades. Unfortunately, all of those years take a toll and some of those homes now sit in disrepair needing TLC to get them market ready, which takes time and skill that not everyone has the money or bandwidth for.

If you are wanting to sell your rental or otherwise worn-down property, but don’t have the time or ability to prepare it for market, you still have options! SOCIALIZING SANTEE Veterans Appreciation Golf Tournament | santeechamber.com The event took place at Santee’s prestigious, exclusive golf course, Carlton Oaks Golf Course, designed to foster meaningful business relationships and facilitate networking opportunities among sponsors, who had the chance to showcase their services on the green. We celebrated community and service, with participation from several Veteran Service Organizations from across the county. The highlight of the day was the presence of Veterans playing on the course, as we took the opportunity to show our deepest appreciation and unwavering support for their dedicated service to our country. The event not only promoted professional connections but also honored the sacrifices made by our Veterans, ensuring they were recognized and celebrated for their commitment to protecting our freedoms. Save the date and join us for the 2025 Veterans Appreciation Golf Tournament on Thursday, November 6th!

Veterans Resource Expo | santeechamber.com In September the Santee Chamber held our annual joint mixer at Lantern Crest Senior Living, showcasing a wonderful collaboration between the La Mesa Chamber of Commerce and the Santee Chamber of Commerce. Attendees enjoyed an array of delicious food, which really elevated the atmosphere and encouraged mingling. Throughout the evening, guests had the opportunity to connect with one another, share ideas, and explore potential collaborations. The highlight of the night was the raffle, featuring an assortment of enticing baskets, which added an exciting element to the event.

Gears & Beers | santeechamber.com The Santee Chamber of Commerce hosted a groundbreaking ceremony for Sedano Chevrolet, the city's first new-car dealership. Owned by East County native Manny Sedano, a Veteran who grew up in Lakeside and attended El Capitan High School, the dealership represents a significant development for the community.

The dealership is being built on a historic property, once home to Santee’s original schoolhouse, Cowle’s School, which was later renamed Santee School in 1893 before closing in 2003. The property also housed the Santee Chamber's offices from 1978 to 2018. Longtime Santee company, the Cameron Brothers, partnered with the Sedano Auto Group to make this project a reality.

The Chamber is excited about the revitalization of this iconic site and the new opportunities it brings, especially among so many automotive related businesses in the area!

Holiday Floral Workshop | santeechamber.com This was the Chamber’s second year working in collaboration with Momentum Tutoring and the Kiwani’s Club as we hosted over 60 youth entrepreneurs in the gym at Santana High School.. Kids had their booths set up and on display as we welcomed the public to come in and shop with them. Many of them have been working with Momentum Tutoring for the past several months in preparation for this event via their Kids Biz Club. If you have a kiddo in your life aged 7-17 who might be interested in starting their own business, get them into the kids club at Momentum so they can join us at next year’s fair!

Business After 5 Mixer | santeechamber.com The Santee Chamber of Commerce hosted a forum for candidates running for State Congress District 48, State Assembly District 75, County Supervisor District 2, Santee City Mayor and Santee City Council District 4 in the November general election. Candidates were able to meet the audience as participants had an opportunity to ask questions and research candidates. This event was free to the public and held at the Carlton Oaks Golf Course.
