Dare and Chamber Staff
Spring is a time for rebirth and renewal. At the Santee Chamber of Commerce, we are dedicated to enhancing economic and community development and would like to renew this commitment to our business and residential communities. This issue’s theme is all about the development of our community and how our Chamber will be developing along with it. We have established a few goals for 2018 revolving around becoming a better resource for the community. In essence, these are our ‘New Year’s Resolutions’ that help us improve our own organization, which in turn helps Santee citizens feel more engaged with our business community and vice versa.
To continue Economic Development, we are developing a relocation packet for business and residential relocation. We plan to grow our Community Development through enhancing our community-wide events, partnering with local organizations, and implementing programs to support localized up-to-date information.
Our Chamber will serve as a hub for directions, referrals, and resources for our community. We will better our Legislative Advocacy by determining business needs and communicating those needs to local government agencies as well as updating the community with legislative news. We hope to make our networking events more relevant to business owners and managers, and keep our lines of communication as open as possible to serve as a Business Resource.
As you will read in our Chamber Chairperson’s column on page 4, we are here to be your Chamber. While made up of business members, we ultimately serve the community as a whole. We are looking forward to engaging with you this year. Come visit our new office, our website, or give us a call! We would love to hear from you and how we can better assist you. You can read more about the Chamber, and our move, on page 7.

Santee
Having lived in Santee for over 30 years, I have seen much forward progress in our fine city, both through the careful planning of our city officials, and especially with the Chamber of Commerce. And, I’m looking forward to seeing even more exciting changes – like the relocation of our Chamber offices. The Santee School District very graciously provided us with a home for over 30 years, and now with the possibility of a new office complex being developed on that property, the Chamber is relocating to its new home on the second floor of 10159 Mission Gorge Road.
What does this change look like for our Chamber? More possibilities! As we look at ways we can be even stronger advocates for our members and the community at large, we want to hear from you! Consider this… we are YOUR Chamber… and YOUR Chamber’s voice is only as strong as its membership. The more members, the louder our collective voice.
If you are interested in membership, volunteer opportunities, or have ideas that you believe could add more value to YOUR Chamber, its members, and the community, please contact the Chamber at info@santeechamber.com
Whether through advocacy, networking and educational opportunities, or community events, we are here to help make this a true community where businesses thrive.
Help us be the change we want to see in Santee… and remember to Shop Santee!

John F. Kennedy once said, “Change is the law of life. And those who look only to the past or present are certain to miss the future.” As the 2018 Chamber directors have officially stepped in, I would like to thank the 2017 directors and more specifically, Mike Clinkenbeard, 2017 Chairman and 2018 interim CEO, and Robert Lloyd, 2017 interim CEO, for paving the way to an exciting 2018.

From the Office of the Mayor
Joh n Minto Mayor City of Santee
It has been a year since I first reported from the Mayor’s Office, so I would like to give you an update on what has happened.
Last March, I provided a list of my top ranked Goals:
• Traffic issues on our local streets as well as congestion on State Route 52
• Attract a new movie theater
• Build a public safety center to accommodate the sheriff and fire departments
• Create a multi-use community center with a new library, senior and teen center, and offices for the Chamber of Commerce and service clubs
Traffic:
a. HomeFed Development Corporation entered into an agreement with Caltrans to hire a consultant to design a truck climbing lane for westbound SR 52 from Mast Blvd to Santo Road, and in conjunction, the city applied for a federal grant for the construction of the truck climbing lane.
b. Striping modifications were made on Carlton Oaks Drive and West Hills Pkwy to reduce morning congestion.
c. More good news is that Republic Waste, operators of the landfill applied for and received a revision to their operating permit to allow trucks to queue on landfill property instead of Mast Boulevard.
Movie Theater:
The city has entered into an Exclusive Negotiating Agreement with Studio Movie Grill. Studio Movie Grill provided an earnest money deposit for the site and we have already begun discussion for the theater. I expect to report greater details and a ground breaking in my next column. Senior and Teen Center; Public Safety Center; New Library: The city is hiring a consultant for site planning and funding for a senior and teen center. Land has been set aside by the county for a public safety center and we are in early discussion for a new library.

We’re Movin’ On Up (stairs)
Although the City of Santee has only been incorporated since 1980, the Santee Chamber of Commerce has been a gathering place for local businesses since 1955. The Chamber is a coalition of people dedicated to the promotion and advancement of commercial, industrial, professional, and civic interests. As well as providing efficient, courteous assistance to visitors, residents and businesses, the Chamber is also an advocate for a well-planned, balanced community, supported by a healthy, expanding business community. Operating under the guidance of a volunteer Board of Directors, the Chamber’s staff carries out numerous programs, all designed to encourage economic development, small business education, governmental policy analysis, and positive community relations.
Business opportunities abound in Santee. With a growing population of over 57,000 and more than 16 square miles of land, the city has almost 300 acres dedicated to office and commercial use, more than 400 acres of industrial districts and over 4,000 acres of mixed use areas in town. The Chamber of Commerce represents thousands of jobs in our growing community.
Our Chamber could not exist without the help of community organizations and businesses. The Santee School District has been a tremendous support for the Chamber for more than three decades. The property that the Chamber currently uses is owned by the Santee School District, and until it was closed in 2003 was the site of Santee Elementary School, which was built in 1891 and held the title of Santee’s oldest school. In December 1979, Hamann & Warburton donated the building the Chamber currently resides in for the “joint use of the District and the Chamber.” Since then the Santee School District not only hosted the Chamber on their property, they have also contributed to the Chamber’s continuance, events, and publications. In August of 2017, the Santee School District Board of Education accepted a bid from Lincoln Property Co. for the 13-acre site. That offer recently fell through in escrow so the site is still available for purchase. The property could be used to develop an office park or commercial area but any proposed project would have to go through plans and staff review by the City, and then be docketed for a City Council public hearing. Project approval would take some time and once project entitlements are approved, then site development could begin.
In our new office space on the second floor of 10159 Mission Gorge Road, we will have the ability to offer a shared meeting
space and office for home businesses for rent.
Since there are approximately 750 home-based businesses in Santee, having shared office space is an excellent resource for businesses when they need to separate their home and work life or meet clients and current or potential employees. Our large meeting room will allow us to host our larger meetings in-office as opposed to off-site. We will also be able to use the space for “Lunch & Learn” classes or other business workshop opportunities. Just like in our current office, we will still have printed resources available for tourists and residents in our lobby.
As we say goodbye to our home of over 30 years, the Santee Chamber of Commerce would like to express our appreciation to the Santee School District and countless others who have helped us throughout this period. Thank you, Santee, for your support over our 63 years of existence…here’s to at least 63 more! TSM

with Marc Paksima
I am blessed to be in this position. I got to interview Marlene Best, the City Manager. She is the Best at what she does. Get it (sorry I had to)?
I had a great interview with Marlene regarding her journey to City Manager and some of the interesting things that happen in Santee.
Q: I read from your profile on the Santee website that you got your BA in Physical Education. What prompted you to get into the Public Sector after that?
Marlene: It was an unusual track. I was working in Parks & Recreation. My first job in the Public Sector was an after-school playground leader and I was teaching dance classes to adults at the same time. There were more things that were needed in that career field so I was moved up from doing those things to being in charge of a community center and different programs. I went on with my career in Parks & Rec with handling more responsibility and larger issues. At one point in my career I was asked if I could do those things in a City Manager’s office. I tip-toed and danced my way up to where I am now.
Q Wow. So you’re Leslie Knope. You are literally living the life of Leslie Knope. Parks & Rec is a great show.
Marlene: You know, I’ve never seen that show. Everybody tells me it’s really good.
Q What achievements are you most proud of in your life thus far?
Marlene: I have 3 great kids. I’ve also had the opportunity to build my own home twice. Nobody thought we could build the homes but we did. From a professional perspective, I’ve helped to make the communities that I’ve worked in better for the people that live there. That’s my hope.
Q How has Santee changed the most since you’ve been the City Manager?
Marlene: I don’t think it’s fair for me to answer that question. You might want to ask how other people think it has changed since I’ve been here. From my perspective, it was pretty good when I got here. Hopefully we’ve given the opportunity for our staff to shine.
Q: Here’s a question with an easy answer and a simple solution. 52-freeway traffic?
Marlene: We do care about it. We get the frustration with traffic. Council Members and staff experience the traffic too. We have a Santee City wish list with an Atomic Traffic Blaster on it.
Minus the part of Marlene never seeing Parks & Rec, I’d say the interview went great. Marlene is a strong woman with a soft-spoken heart.
Till next time!

Life in the Fast Lane
The buzz about town (and in this issue of The Santee Magazine) is development and the changes it will bring, both positive and negative. One of the particularly hot topics has been finding solutions to our current traffic problems and preparing for increased traffic as we develop more housing and attractions such as a theater and shopping and dining opportunities. Marlene Best, Santee’s City Manager, remarked “The City is being pressured by the state to permit more housing to help solve the “Housing Crisis” in California. At the same time we are working to balance the impacts of this new growth on our community. We are working with other public and private groups to help with long term improvements to Highway 52. Traffic signals are being synchronized to help traffic flow more smoothly. Wherever possible, new development is paying for improvements created by their projects. A round-about is in planning for the east side of town to more effectively handle traffic. The City has applied for grant funds to help with improvements along SR-52 and we are working with the City of San Diego on the areas of Mast and West Hills Parkway that are not in control of the City of Santee.”
You may have noticed the installation of cameras at some intersections. This is so City traffic engineers can monitor and study traffic flow and the hope is eventually the Santee Sheriff’s Department will also be able to see this information to better dispatch help to locations experiencing issues. “The traffic deputies at the Santee station provide traffic enforcement primarily based on statistical data, radio calls for service and community concern. To be clear, the traffic monitoring system is for the City’s traffic engineers to give them real time information on traffic flow; not traffic enforcement.” said Chris Steffen, Lieutenant at Santee Sheriff’s Department.
At the January 24th council meeting, City Council voted to approve the installation of a median on east Mission Gorge Road and will receive Highway Safety Improvement Program funds for the project. This installation is hoped to improve safety; however, some businesses fear it may deter customers since they will need to make a U-turn at the nearest intersection if heading the opposite direction.
The City of Santee is also currently conducting a study of the State Route 52 (SR-52) corridor to explore potential
Once
solutions to address current and future congestion issues in the corridor between I-805 and SR-67. These potential solutions could involve several modes of transportation including freeway improvements, enhanced transit facilities and services, improved access to key activity centers, and Transportation Demand Management and Transportation System Man-agement strategies, all aimed at improving the overall mobility through the corridor. Current levels of congestion, particularly during the morning and evening peak periods, have affected the reliability of service on this freeway. These conditions are expected to worsen in the future as population and employment grow and the reliability of SR-52 will continue to deteriorate unless improvements are implemented.
The goals of the study are to identify short and mid- term improvements that can accomplish the following: improve mobility, increase reliability through Transportation System Management, reduce dependence on single occupancy vehicle trips through Transportation Demand Management, and improve transit and access to transit.
The study seeks to develop solutions that optimize existing facilities and provide alternatives to driving alone. It also aims to develop solutions that are flexible to respond to changing user needs and new technology. The study will also identify funding strategies to implement the recommended projects in the near and mid-term. TSM

At 9955 Mission Gorge Road, Panera Bread will open a 4,600 square foot restaurant. This location will include a drive-thru as well as indoor dining. They serve a variety of items including sandwiches, soups, and salads and dub it "Food As It Should Be."
Major Remaking of Mast Park Coming Soon
The city is poised in late 2018 to start an $11 million facelift of Mast Park that will retain the park’s natureoriented charm but dramatically change its appearance and usability.
Originally developed by the county in the late 1970’s, the park was taken over by Santee shortly after it incorporated in 1980. Although the park is named after Bill Mast, an early developer of Santee, today it is an oasis of tranquility amid the bustle of urban living.
“If you think of Santee’s riverfront parks as a string of pearls, Mast Park is the oldest pearl and needs some polishing,” said Community Services Director Bill Maertz.
The redevelopment project has been in the works since the completion of a conceptual design in 2012. Following several workshops to gather community input, the City Council gave the green light. Financing will come from dedicated park funds and an assortment of grants.
Outdated amenities within the park –the restroom, shade pavilion, basketball court and playground – will be replaced with modern facilities. Even more dramatic will be new landscaping designed by award-winning Estrada Land Planning that features a mix of drought-tolerant native plants, dry creek beds and other hardscape reminiscent of a botanical garden.
“Many Santee residents live here because of the proximity of nature and the hills and canyons,” said Maertz. “They’ll be happy to know that we will be planting hundreds of
new trees for shade and habitat for birds.” Most of the park’s mature sycamore, oak and cottonwood trees that provide soothing shade will remain untouched.
The remodeled park will have a lighted loop trail, creating a safe, well-lit path so people can get their steps in during winter. Additional parking will be tucked away in the northwest corner of the park. The design calls for tripling the amount of space for picnics, which will bring a familyfriendly energy to the park. New play areas for children will include a traditional playground structure along with a nature play area with tree trunks for kids to climb on and get their hands dirty.
The existing dog park will be reconfigured with three sections, one dedicated for puppies, another for small dogs and a third for big dogs.
A concession stand with picnic tables will be placed between the dog park and a redone disc golf course, creating a hub for social activity. This may also become a pit stop for bicycle riders who in the not-so-distant future will be touring for miles along the San Diego River Trail.
Construction is expected to take about 10 months and be completed in late 2019. Portions of the park will be closed during construction, but the east-west bike and pedestrian trail along the river will remain open.
“Overall, the improvements will ensure the next generation will have the same opportunities to enjoy this beautiful river park,” Maertz said.

KB Home’s Santee Developments Two New Communities to Choose From
KB Home is one of the largest and most recognized homebuilders in the United States and an industry leader in sustainability, building innovative and highly energy- and water-efficient new homes. Founded in 1957 and the first homebuilder listed on the New York Stock Exchange, they have built nearly 600,000 homes for families from coast to coast. Distinguished by its personalized homebuilding approach, KB Home lets each buyer choose their lot location, floor plan, décor choices, design features and other special touches that matter most to them.
KB Home has two new home developments in Santee, River Village and Prospect Fields. “Given the highly landconstrained nature of the market, and rising consumer demand for new homes in the region, we are pleased to be building new KB Home neighborhoods in the beautiful City of Santee,” said Steve Ruffner, regional general manager and president of KB Home’s Coastal division. “Our new communities provide a diverse mix of home styles and design choices for San Diego County home shoppers.” River Village offers an easy commute to area employers and access to all San Diego has to offer, via Interstate 8 and Highways 52 and 67. Located just minutes away from San Diego State University and Grossmont College, River Village is also within walking distance of the well-regarded K-8 grade Hill Creek School. Homeowners at River Village can take in the shopping, dining, and entertainment options at nearby Santee Trolley Square. Bordered by newly-renovated nature trails running alongside the San Diego River to the south, River Village’s location is also close to hiking, biking, boating and fishing.
KB Home is constructing 82 one-story and two-story homes at River Village, with three floor plans available, ranging in size from 2,210 to 2,850 square feet and offering up to six bedrooms, three-and-a-half baths, and two-car garages. Featuring desirable design options such as spacious great rooms, flex spaces, covered patios, and ample storage, the homes at River Village start in the low-$700,000s.
The new homes at River Village feature large yards and come equipped with a 2.0 kW solar system as standard. When combined with the many additional energy- and water-conserving features found in all KB homes, including WaterSense® labeled faucets and fixtures, the solarpowered homes at River Village can potentially save buyers
hundreds of dollars on utility bills each year as compared to typical new or resale homes. The KB Home Sales Center and model homes for River Village are located at 10707 Braverman Drive, Santee, California, 92071.
Prospect Fields is conveniently situated near Interstate 8 and Highways 52 and 125 for easy access to San Diego and other East County cities. Residents at Prospect Fields can enjoy the community’s proximity to major employment centers, including downtown San Diego, San Diego State University, and Grossmont College. School-aged children living in the community will have access to the highlyranked Santee and Grossmont Union High School Districts. Just a short drive away, Santee Trolley Square and Grossmont Center feature several attractive retail, dining, and entertainment destinations. The hiking, camping, fishing, and boating available at nearby Lake Jennings, Lake Murray, Santee Lakes Recreation Preserve, and Mission Trails Regional Park provide an abundance of options to enjoy the famed Southern California weather.
The three two-story floor plans available at Prospect Fields range in size from 1,904 to 2,221 square feet, and can be built with up to five bedrooms and three baths. The KB homes at Prospect Fields can also include several desirable design features, such as spacious great rooms, lofts, and even a downstairs bedroom. Lot selection, exterior style, and home décor and features can all be tailored to suit each buyer’s own lifestyle, budget, and individual preferences. Home prices start in the low-$600,000s.
The KB homes at Prospect Fields come equipped with a solar power system as an included feature and are ENERGY STAR® 3.0 certified and outfitted with advanced energy- and water-saving features. Included features, such as dual pane, low-E windows, increased insulation and WaterSense® labeled faucets and fixtures, can help increase homeowners’ comfort while saving on monthly energy expenses compared to typical new or resale homes. The KB Home Sales Center and model homes at Prospect Fields can be reached by exiting Highway 52 at Mission Gorge Road heading east. Turn right on Fanita Drive, right on Prospect Avenue, then right on Camden Drive.

Residential Electrical Trends for 2018
Are you considering upgrades to your home? Electrical upgrades can add huge value. From home décor to electrical efficiencies, there is a lot to consider. Mike Dombo at Raceway Electric shares the top trends in residential electric.
1. Decorator Switches & Outlets. Upgrade your standard toggle switches and outlets. Another popular upgrade we see are “Decora” rocker style switches and outlets. They add contemporary style and a great finishing touch.
2. USB outlets. You can switch out your regular outlet/receptacle to one that also has a USB plug to charge those smart devices. Are you a DIYer? Check out the how-to video on Facebook at www.facebook.com/RacewayElectric. *Don’t forget to turn off your electricity and think safety first — or hire a licensed professional.
3. Panel Upgrade. A panel upgrade can keep your system up to code, keep your home and family safe, and make
room for home additions such as additional outlets, room additions, a pool, spa, and solar.
4. LED. Upgrade your light fixtures to LED lights. LED lighting is now available in a wide range of fixtures, bulbs, and colors. The growing popularity for LED technology has led products to be more affordable and can provide a substantial cost savings to your electricity bill.
5. Solar. Solar still makes sense. With the current tax credit still available to buyers, purchasing a system now will pay for itself in no time. Many of our customers opt to use HERO for financing and end up easily purchasing a system that covers their entire bill.
6. Home Automation. The smart home is more obtainable than ever. Now with a few fixture upgrades you can control almost anything electrical with your smart phone and your AI devices (Google Home & Amazon Echo). “Siri, turn on my kitchen lights.” It’s a thing and it’s gaining popularity by the day.

Santee Earns High Marks for Retail Growth In an era of Zagat guides and Michelin ratings, a ‘Five-Star’ rating for a restaurant or hotel is universally regarded as a crowning achievement. In a similar sense, cities are rated according to economic indicators such as retail growth. The Santee Chamber of Commerce has recently announced that Santee has earned a ‘Five Star’ top rating in the 2008 edition of California Retail Survey This is an independent market research guide published annually that focuses solely on the California retail market. Santee’s performance was evaluated along with California’s 58 counties and 272 larger cities in the state. The California Retail Survey is considered the definitive guide for evaluating and comparing retail markets statewide. The five-star rating is given to retail markets that have grown rapidly over the last five years. Of the fifteen larger cities in San Diego County profiled, only Santee, Poway and San Marcos earned the five-star rating for retail market growth. The City has been experiencing strong retail growth since the Santee Trolley Square shopping center opened in late 2002, offering 453,000 square feet of ‘big box’ major retailers, restaurants and specialty stores. That was followed in 2004 by a 250,000 square foot center with Kohl’s Department Store and Lowes Home Improvement. Last year, the City gained a new Best Buy across from Trolley Square, filling the long-time need for a major electronics store for local shoppers. Construction is currently underway on the 71,000 square foot Marketplace at Santee project across from Kohl’s and Lowes Home Improvement Center, with completion by summer 2009. Henry’s Market will relocate and expand to anchor this new center, with additional food stations and a broader range of services. San Diego National Bank will open a branch there, and SportClips Haircuts and FedExKinko’s are among the new retailers joining the center. 2017 Person of the Year Dustin Trotter
Each year the Santee Chamber of Commerce creates an opportunity to recognize an individual who has made outstanding contributions to our community through their volunteer service to the citizens of Santee. This prestigious award is called Santee’s Person of the Year. It is given annually to an individual who has made significant contributions to the community of Santee’s quality of life through their involvement in any of a variety of community activities that include: charity, service projects, educational, youth, civic, religious or other similar activities that enrich our community and its citizens. The award may reflect current contributions or those made over a longer period of time.
For our 2017 Person of the Year, we chose to honor Dustin Trotter who is a true Santee success story. Starting from a very humble beginning but filled with determination, he has managed to build a very successful construction company, a real estate investment company, as well as being a top Realtor in East San Diego County. Most importantly, Dustin has a philanthropic nature that causes him to always strive to help others achieve more which is why he has been chosen to hold the title of Person of the Year.
Sarah Wood, Chairwoman of the Santee Young Professionals Committee, remarks, “This award is so meaningful because Dustin humbly gives back, with no expectation of being recognized for it. He has devoted himself to this special community, and every unselfish action he takes is truly impacting all those around us. I am proud to call Dustin my good friend.”
Dustin was born to a hardworking blue-collar family that resided in Santee. With his mom working in various sales jobs and his dad owning a pizza parlor, Dustin had to start working at a very young age. Starting work at age 13 and picking up a second job by 16, Dustin quickly learned what it meant to be on time, have integrity, honesty, and loyalty. Values that he still embodies today in business and in daily life. Dustin began his career in carpentry at the age of 18 and quickly learned the trade receiving the title of foreman by the age of 21. In 2006 at 26 years old, Dustin founded Trotter Door and Trim which he has
developed into one of the premier general contracting firms in Santee.
Dustin has an extensive volunteer and community advocate record. He is an active member of the Santee Santa’s program, Santee Food Bank, Guardian Angels Church, Santee Parks and Recreation Committee

Many people mistakenly believe that the air filters in furnaces and air conditioners keep dust and allergens out of their home, when in reality, HVAC filters are designed to keep dust out of equipment. While ordinary filters do help to remove some dust from the air, when changed regularly, they do little to trap the microscopic particles that cause the sneezing and wheezing of allergy season.
Regular filters are used to trap large dust particles that accumulate on the motor and fans. This helps keep your unit running efficiently and saves you money from your unit over-working itself. However, particles like mold, bacteria, and pollen are much smaller in size so they slip right through these filters.
This means they get circulated through your ductwork and blown back into your home!
Air filters for allergies are designed to block much smaller particles, so your air stays cleaner. They are called “high energy particulate air filters” or more commonly, HEPA
filters. Because HEPA filters are made from densely packed layers of glass fibers instead of paper, they can trap 99.97% of pollen, dust, and smoke particles.
While using the correct air filters does help to reduce allergens in the air, don’t forget about cleaning the rest of your HVAC unit! If you haven’t had your system maintained at least twice a year, you’ve likely got quite a bit of buildup on the blower fans and in your ductwork.
Our certified technicians at Allegiance Heating & Air Conditioning can help you make the best decisions for your equipment, home & family this Spring. Whether it be performing a system tune-up or educating you on filter options that will ensure your comfort, Allegiance is here to help.
Our pledge is to keep you comfortable year-round, while providing superior service at a reasonable cost! TSM

Santee Vice Mayor Rob McNelis commented, “The generosity and willingness to help others that Dustin displays on a daily basis is beyond compare. He is an exemplary example of yet another reason why I am always Santee Proud.” Through Dustin’s personal efforts, many Santee families have received school supplies, food, and assistance to make their homes safe and functional. He has also spear-headed multiple community efforts to better the lives of seniors and needy families by bringing others to work on and contribute to the food drives, backpack supply drive, and bikes and balls dive.
When Dustin is not working or volunteering he spends time with his family; wife Genny and kids Kayla and Jaden. They enjoy quiet family time and attending the fairs and festivals in Santee like the concert in the park series.

Sycuan Adds 4 New Shuttle Routes to MTS Transit Centers
In October 2017, the San Diego Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) and Sycuan Casino announced a naming rights agreement for the Sycuan Green Line.
In addition to the naming rights, the agreement also allows Sycuan to operate bus shuttles to the Sycuan Casino from select MTS Transit Centers: Santee, El Cajon, Grantville and 12th & Imperial. Sycuan will also receive the right to change the name of three MTS stations.
The Sycuan Green Line is almost 24 miles long and serves some of the region’s major attractions including SDSU, San Diego Stadium, Mission Valley, Hazard Center, Fashion Valley, Old Town, Seaport Village, Convention Center, Gaslamp Quarter and Petco Park. Additionally, it serves 27 stations in the cities of Santee, El Cajon, La Mesa and San Diego. The Sycuan Green Line also has high visibility along Interstate 8.
“This agreement furthers our commitment to invest in organizations that serve the entire San Diego community,” said Cody Martinez, Chairman, Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation. “We are excited for the public to take advantage of the MTS transportation network to be able to access all of our current casino and future resort amenities.”

SVP - Senior Volunteer Patrol
The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department’s Senior Volunteer Patrol (SVP) is looking for citizens 50 years and older who want to serve their community by promoting safety and crime prevention programs. Duties range from traffic control, patrolling neighborhoods, home vacation checks, clerical work and checking on the welfare of elderly or disabled persons.
The Sheriff’s Department has a FREE service to check on the safety of senior and disabled people who live alone. We want our elderly and shut-in residents to know they are never alone. The You Are Not Alone (YANA) program offers peace of mind and a sense of security for those who enjoy their independence, but have no friends or family to check on them regularly. Those enrolled in the YANA program get phone calls and a weekly visit from a Senior Volunteer Patrol. If a YANA member doesn’t pick up their phone after attempts are made to reach them, SVP members will go to the YANA’s home to make sure the YANA is not sick, injured or in need of help.
In our continuing efforts to make San Diego County as safe as possible, we offer FREE Vacation Checks. Let us know when you are leaving and Senior Volunteer Patrol members will perform security inspections outside your home Monday through Friday. If they see anything suspicious, they will call for a deputy who will determine if there’s been a break in.
Being an SVP is a wonderful way to give back to your community and to enjoy the rewards of assisting our YANA’s.

Grossmont Healthcare District’s Herrick Community Health Care Library Serves East County Residents
The Grossmont Healthcare District (GHD), a public agency that supports many non-profit, health-related community programs and services in San Diego’s East County region, operates the Dr. William C. Herrick Community Health Care Library, a comprehensive consumer health library that is open to the public and specializes in providing access to reliable health information on-site and online.
The Herrick Library, which opened in 2002, is located at 9001 Wakarusa St. in La Mesa. The library’s collection totals about 3,000 items including books, magazines, newsletters, pamphlets, DVDs, computer databases, and its website with extensive links covering all major health topics. Ten computers are available for public use. The library also offers two small meeting rooms that are available to community-based, nonprofit organizations for health-related workshops and meetings.
“The Grossmont Healthcare District’s Herrick Library is a tremendous community asset that is available to anyone who wants to access a broad array of healthcare resources and to gain a greater understanding of medical conditions and options,” said Nancy Greengold, MD, Chief Medical Officer, Sharp Grossmont Hospital. “For hospital patients and their families, the library is a valuable resource that provides current health information and research.”
Numerous surveys report that a majority of American adults use the internet to search for health information for themselves or a loved one. With thousands of sites offering free health information, it can be difficult for people to know which resources are accurate and reliable. To this end, the library staff provides patrons with reference and research assistance for their health or medical questions.

Santee’s high School Standouts
Barry
West Hills High School
Class of 2018
G.P.A: 4.167
Varsity Sport(s): Basketball (W.H.H.S record holder for most 3pts in a game, points in a game, Top 10 PPG in the nation and on track to be the leading scorer in California), Tennis (Junior Year)
Extra Curricular Activity & Achievements:
ASB President, UT-All Academic Team, 1st Team All-East County, UT- Star of the Month, Cal-Hi Sports Player of the Month, live DJ at all home football games.
Cameron Barry is definitely outstanding. He got his school to be the first in SD to have a live DJ at all of the home football games this year. When he’s not breaking records and achieving schoolfirsts, he’s with his family and friends. Most of the Barrys (Mom, dad, siblings, cousins) graduated from Santana high school and grew up in Santee.
Q: What advice would you give to a newborn infant?
Cam: If they are able to understand me, I’d say whatever you want in life, you have to work for. If you’re willing to put in the work then you can have whatever you want.
Q: What is true happiness?
Cam: Something you can see yourself doing even if it doesn’t make you money. Finding something you like to do.
Q: How do you find the motivation to do so much while maintaining your G.P.A?
Cam: I strive to be the best that I can be. You should never settle to be less than your best. There’s always a better version of myself that can be reached so I always work hard.
Q: What TV show, song and movie best describe you?
Cam: Ball in the Family. Anything from Migos. Anything with Will Farrell. He definitely speaks to me.
Q: Out of all of your family members who have played basketball in high school (which is a lot), who is the best?
Cam: I definitely would have to say myself. My brother Christian would think otherwise.
Your brother has a cool name. Thanks, Cam.
Amanda Stablein

Class of 2018
G.P.A: 4.385
Varsity Sport(s): Volleyball (3 years), Basketball (3), Track & Field (2) Extra Curricular Activity & Achievements: ASB Secretary, Rock Church EC Student Leader, S.H.S Acts Of Kindness Secretary, Link Crew(2), Team Captain-Volleyball.
Mandi Stablein is calm, cool and collected. Her awesomeness is contagious. I left the interview replacing the word ‘cool’ with the word ‘Amanda (Mandi)’ in my dictionary. Enjoy.
Q: How do you find the motivation & time to be involved with so many activities while still maintaining your G.P.A?
Mandi: I grew up playing a lot of sports so I’m used to having a busy schedule.
Q: What movie, song and TV show best describe you?
Mandi: High School Musical best describes my life because I play basketball and like to break out into song when I hang out with my friends. For a song I would pick My Girl by Dylan Scott because I don’t care what others think and just try to stay true to myself. I can’t think of a TV show that describes my life.
Q: What is one piece of advice that you would give to a newborn infant?
Mandi: To take advantage of every opportunity that comes their way.
Q: What are your goals for this year? Life?
Mandi: Go to college, find a career I enjoy, find a husband to share my life and start a family with.
Q: That’s awesome. Why did you start track your Junior year?
Mandi: I had played softball for about 12 years of my life and I wanted a change. Pole vaulting looked interesting and I wanted to try it. Luckily it was the first sport that my dad knew nothing about and could not coach me in.
Thank you, Mandi. You’re awesome.

Doggone Good When Your Stomach’s Growling
New to Santee is a one-of-a-kind veteran and local owned sandwich eatery! Former Firehouse Subs owners Kristy & Shawn Larkin decided a change was needed and Growler’s Sub Shack would replace the franchise and become the perfect place to enjoy a hearty meal with unchained flavor. This “dive bar” sandwich shop, with its unique menu of flavorful and fresh food, offers something for everyone.
Kristy and Shawn had wanted to move away from the franchise system for a couple years. In particular, for them the franchise business model was not working in the way of providing flexibility to meet the more challenging California business environment, or the more diverse food options desired by their customers.
This local couple decided to move in a direction that would allow them to not only continue to serve great
sandwiches but develop and expand their menu to be more responsive and reflective of local customers. As a result, they have improved the quality of meat and cheese available for sandwiches. They began using bread baked fresh daily with no additives or preservatives and expanded their menu to include three new sandwiches, an expanded and improved salad selection, wraps and a gluten free option. Growler’s Sub Shack also serves tater tots both plain and in “loaded” variations to which they say, “Please enjoy these potato barrels responsibly!”
Not only have they changed the exterior signage but have also changed the interior décor to be warm and friendly to match their food and customer service. Speaking of their service, Growler’s Sub Shack offers a wide variety of employment opportunities for friendly, customer-service oriented individuals. Visit their establishment or contact them directly to find out about positions and shifts currently available. You can find their application at www.GrowlersSubShack.net/employment.
They will still offer “kids eat free” on Mondays and Wednesdays and will continue to support the public safety sectors in Santee and all of East County, as well as the Green Beret Foundation. If you want to try their delicious food, you can grab a sub, soup, salad, tots, and more at 214 Town Center Pkwy #A-2 any day from 10:30 am - 8:30 pm! They say, “No bones about it, we are doggone good.”

Getting back to basics: Why a Financial Game Plan is so Important
Many of us are familiar with the expression, “failing to plan is planning to fail.” As an Agent with New York Life, I can assure you that—when it comes to financial goals and objectives—this old adage still rings true.
In fact, it may be more relevant than ever.
It isn’t always easy for some Americans to make financial headway. With pensions in decline and interest rates only just starting to inch up near historic lows, it usually takes persistence and sound planning in order to get ahead.
Not sure how to begin? That’s okay—it’s easy to become overwhelmed if you think about all your needs at once. Instead, try taking it one step at a time, starting with the basics:
Build an emergency fund—No matter where you are in life, it’s important to set aside 8-10 months of living expenses. You don’t have to do it all at once, but every dollar you save today is a dollar you won’t have to borrow if something unexpected happens.
Protect your home and family—Most of us have people who depend on us to keep a roof over their heads and food on their plates. That’s a big responsibility, but it’s one life insurance can help you meet—even if something tragic takes you away. You can start with an affordable term life plan at first, and then add more coverage as your needs and budget grow.
Prepare for major expenses like college—As a parent or grandparent, you naturally want the best for your loved ones. Now’s the time to start a college or wedding fund so they won’t have to go into debt to make their dreams for the future come true.
Get ready for retirement—There are plenty of ways to set aside money for retirement: 401(k)s, IRAs, and fixed deferred annuities* just to name a few. But they all have one thing in common—the sooner you start, the better off you’ll be in the long run. Try to increase your contributions over time—perhaps 1% with each raise—or, if you are age 50 or older, look into some of the ‘catch-up’ provisions that may allow you to contribute even more.
While the economy is starting to grow, it still makes sense to stay focused on the things that really matter. A sound financial game plan can help us accomplish many things— but perhaps the most important is making sure we never lose sight of them again.
