HELLO SANTEE! I wanted to take a moment to talk about the remarkable impact each of us can make by choosing to shop local. As the heartbeat of our community, our small businesses contribute more than just goods and services—they are the threads that weave our town together. Every time we support a local shop or business, we're doing more than making a purchase; we're investing in our community's future. Here's why shopping local holds incredible power: Nurturing the Community Spirit: Local businesses are often run by our friends, neighbors, and fellow community members. When we choose to buy from them, we're fostering a sense of togetherness and solidarity. The relationships formed in these establishments extend far beyond transactions; they create a web of connections that strengthen the fabric of our community. Economic Resilience: Our local economy thrives when we support homegrown businesses. Each dollar spent at a local shop ripples through our community, supporting jobs, encouraging entrepreneurship, and bolstering the local tax base. It's a cycle of prosperity that begins with each of us.

Publisher Santee Chamber of Commerce Editor Kristen Dare Graphic Design Nick Ossey Committee Members Heather Bury-Charpentier Kristen Dare Jennae Gonzalez

Unique Offerings and Personalized Service: One of the greatest joys of shopping local is discovering unique, handcrafted, or specialty items you won't find elsewhere. Beyond that, local businesses often provide personalized service, offering a level of care and attention that's hard to match in larger chains.

Contributing Writers Stephanie Carter Kristen Dare Melissa Dombo Darcy Fagerwold Jennae Gonzalez John Olsen

Environmental Impact: Shopping locally can also be environmentally friendly. By reducing the distance goods travel, we cut down on carbon emissions associated with transportation. Additionally, local businesses often source their products locally, further reducing their environmental footprint.

Contributing Photographers Kristen Dare Melissa Dombo John Olsen Lynda Marrokal Jay Renard

As we approach this season of giving, I encourage each of us to consider the impact of our choices. Choosing to shop local isn't just about convenience or a fleeting transaction; it's about investing in our community's future, celebrating diversity, and preserving the unique character that makes Santee special. Let's continue to support our local businesses, cherish their contributions, and celebrate the vibrant tapestry they add to our community. Happy Holidays - Shop Santee.

CHAIR'S MESSAGE Hi Santee! My two-year term as Chair of the Santee Chamber of Commerce ends this December. Serving in this role has been an incredible journey. The camaraderie within the Chamber is remarkable, and being part of this supportive network is truly gratifying. When I joined the board, I was just proud and excited to be involved in my business community. Unintentionally influenced by my Dad's active role in the board when I was very young, following in his path felt genuinely rewarding. As co-owner of Raceway Electric & Solar, the joy of working alongside local businesses and connecting with those driven to make a positive

thriving local economy through collaboration and networking. The shared dedication to enhancing Santee has left a lasting impression, and I'm confident the Chamber will continue to be a catalyst for positive change through strong networks and partnerships. I would be remiss not to mention the tireless work of our CEO, Kristen Dare. Kristen's dedication, vision, and continued efforts have been instrumental in the Chamber's accomplishments during my tenure.

Collaborating closely with her and the board have been both insightful and fulfilling, and I am optimistic that the Chamber will continue to achieve significant milestones. The collaborative spirit and commitment demonstrated by each board member have been key to the Chamber's success. GE AR UP FOR FUN WITH PEDEGO E -BIKES OF SANTEE In the heart of our community lies a gem of a store that’s more than just a hub for electric-bikes, it’s a place where connections flourish and customers become part of an extended family. Nestled amidst the bustling streets of Town Center Parkway, local e-bike store, "Pedego" has carved its niche by fostering unique and personalized experiences for every visitor. The store opened in March 2021 by husband and wife team, Greg and Stephanie Carter. Greg rode his first Pedego bike while on a business trip, came home, and immediately purchased a pair for the two of them. Two weeks later they were meeting with the CEO of the company to discuss owning their own shop. Greg Carter is no stranger to the Santee business community; as former owner of Carter Collision and Fix Auto Body, he has had a heart for small business for many years. Wife Stephanie has also had a reiki/ healing business for several years, getting the bug for entrepreneurship herself. With Pedego having over 200 stores, all family owned, it didn’t take long for them to know this was a fit for their next Santee business venture. They didn’t just stop as spouses in this, though… Many of their employees are family and longtime friends. Their son Garrison, nephew Max, and their mechanic Tim (who used to work for Greg when he owned Carter Collision over 20 years ago) all contribute towards their successful team. From the moment you step through the door, you’re greeted not just as a customer, but as a fellow enthusiast and friend. The team at Pedego prides itself on knowing their clientele beyond just a name or a purchase. They take the time to understand the individual needs and preferences of each visitor, creating a bond that transcends the typical retail transaction. What truly sets this store apart is their dedication to building a community. Some of their customers have even started their own regular group rides. Starting with one or two couples getting bikes, to now a growing group that has formed their own traditions together. Centering

the bikes as the common thread

among them, their purchases are now part of their lifestyle and way of staying connected. These opportunities for riders to connect, share stories, and learn from one another shows how the store isn’t merely selling e-bikes, they’re cultivating a culture centered around the joy of

cycling, getting outdoors, and community. The staff’s expertise is matched only by their passion for e-bikes. They’re not just there to sell a product; they’re genuinely excited about the technology, the freedom it offers, and the positive impact it has on both individuals and the environment. This enthusiasm is infectious and forms the cornerstone of the exceptional experiences Pedego offers. Have you been inside their shop yet? Stephanie likes to joke how they are the “Nordstrom” of bike shops with a clean store, nice smell, and “ fashionable bikes”. But she isn't far off in terms of experience. It’s open, bright and clean and the inventory is impressive and the staff beyond helpful. Oh, and did I mention they have an unprecedented 5 year warranty and a full service department. They pride themselves on getting you and your bike back on the road as soon as possible. Customers Shannon McRae and Monica Kamoos recount their experience: “Sometimes in life you come across great customer service. Maybe a restaurant where you get great service, or a shop that makes you feel special, or a product that you can't live without. Greg and Stephanie are the epitome of perfection when it comes to customer service. The product, a Pedego, can be bought at a number of locations, including others here in San Diego, but the reason Santee Pedego is what it is, is because of Greg and Stephanie. We walked in a few years ago as customers, and we walked out as friends. They are the faces and names that people remember, not because Pedego is a great product, but because of the service they provide. We've referred a number of people to them, and everyone is in awe of the experience. People make an investment with this purchase, and a confident one, knowing that Santee Pedego and the Carters are behind it. These bikes are more than just bikes. As we have entered the "empty nest" phase of life, they've given us a whole different freedom, and a wonderful way to enjoy this beautiful place we live in. Riding with friends has become a favorite weekend activity, and mapping rides is a new hobby. Connecting with friends, and enjoying all that San Diego is, is just perfect on a Pedego..”In an age of online shopping and impersonal transactions, Pedego Santee stands as a testament to the power of genuine connections. Each visit isn’t just about buying or fixing a bike; it’s about being part of a community where everyone—from first-time riders to seasoned cyclists—is valued and embraced. They feel so sure about their products, they will let you test ride them before purchase. I don’t just mean a spin around the parking

lot (which I’ve done many times), but truly borrow some of their demo bikes and get a real feel for them. My husband and I recently did just this and what started as a stroll around our block ended as a loop around Santee Lakes and quickly planning our next morning at Mission Trails with family members in town that weekend. Living in Southern California, it just makes sense to have outdoor hobbies, but I really see how this is more than that. You could rewire your whole way of life if you tried. For me, I’m among the lucky ones who live and work in town. I could omit the use of my car for certain office hours, visiting family and friends across town, or running errands (like my husband did when he noticed the need for a quick Home Depot run to get weed wacker string to finish up some yard work). I see so many opportunities here in town and beyond, as our region has so much to explore. So if you haven’t stopped into the Pedego store yet, remember: isn’t just a store—it’s a vibrant hub that thrives on building relationships and fostering a shared love for e-bikes. It’s a place where the human touch elevates the entire experience, turning a simple purchase into a lasting connection. It’s a lovely addition to our thriving business community and I look forward to seeing the Carters each time I visit. I encourage you all to do the same. They are located at 50 Town Center Parkway and bonus, they are having an end-of-the-year sales event until January 2. Kristen Dare, ACE Santee Chamber of Commerce

B UI LD I N G B R I GH T F U T U R E S Expressions Dance & Movement Center, along with our community partners, Staump Music School and Momentum Tutoring are working to build a world where every child has access to the life-changing benefits of arts education. Did you know that kids who participate in the arts are: • 4x more likely to be recognized for academic achievement • 5x less likely to drop out of school • 3x more likely to pursue a bachelor’s degree • 30% more likely to pursue a professional career Additionally, 72% of business leaders say that creativity is the #1 skill they seek when hiring. It’s clear that participating in the arts sets kids up for future success, but that success isn’t just personal. Recent studies show that the arts contribute to the success of our communities as a whole. Both audience-based participation in the arts and personal participation in creating art are linked to higher levels of civic engagement and higher levels of social tolerance. In short, arts engagement creates social outcomes that contribute to a healthy society. At Expressions we see the benefits of dance education play out everyday in the classroom. Dance classes give students an opportunity to make friends, learn to work as a team, and create collaboratively with others. In class, students get great exercise all while increasing musicality, balance, flexibility, strength, and body awareness. S OCIAL IZIN G SAN TEE Macy's small format department store welcomed a long line of first customers on Saturday November 11th. The guests were welcomed in with live music, a light breakfast, a chance to spin a prize wheel, and many happy employees who were ready to share their expertise on the array of merchandise available. The store is beautiful and boasts many favorite, well-known brands of clothing, accessories, makeup and shoes. For those feeling nostalgic (like this 90s kid), there's a back wall full of Toys R Us goodies for kids, right in time for the holidays. On October 25th,

the County of San Diego recognized recently retired

but longtime County Assessor/Recorder/County Clerk, Ernest ”Ernie” J. Dronenburg, Jr. The Santee-based East County Office and Archives located on Mission Gorge Road (which opened to the public in 2019, replacing the El Cajon location and expanding into the County Archives) dedicated their reading room, renaming it after Ernie who has devoted his career towards the betterment of others and is often referred to as “Mr. Prop 13” for his notable protection of the decades old proposition limiting property tax increases. On October 12th we had the pleasure of spending an evening with longtime chamber members, Bob and Ailen Lloyd (and family), at their newest acquisition, Sparky’s Transmissions. This ribbon cutting ceremony was extra special, not just because we all know and love this community-centric family, but because they made who they are at their core part of the celebration. In partnership with some local businesses and non-profit, they were able to gift a well-deserving family a car after suffering a tragic loss. Be sure to look out for a full write up on this in the next issue of The Santee Magazine. Thank you, Lloyd family, for your continuous contributions and congratulations on your newest adventure. In September, we had our long-awaited Business After Five mixer as we joined forces with the Alpine and La Mesa Chambers at Lantern Crest for a safari themed sunset mixer. We had a great turn out with an incredible spread of appetizers, desserts and drinks put on by Chef Mario and the amazing staff at Lantern Crest. Be sure to check out additional photos from the evening on our Facebook page (thank you, Lynda Marrokal!). We are so thankful for these gatherings for business connections at member locations that can truly showcase their properties. Kristen Dare, ACE Santee Chamber of Commerce

SHOP SANTEE This holiday season, be sure to Shop Santee for all your friends, family and neighbors. Here are a few suggestions for the gifts you can grab from around town.

Something they WANT Quench their thirst with a gift card from one of our many coffee shops (like Coffee Corner, Kaffee Meister, Bowls N Brews or the Lean Bean to name a few) or beer-to-go from Three Frogs or BNS Brewing. Indulge your kid (or someone’s inner child) at HobbyTown Santee with their awesome selection of toys, games and models. Something they NEED Check out Al’s Sport Shop for their upcoming sports season and the only place to get Letterman Jackets in town. Everyone needs to eat! We have an incredible selection of quick and full service restaurants around Santee for you to pick up gift cards from for that special someone to dine in, take out, or deliver later. Something to WEAR Personalize something at TCB Embroidery to give an extra special touch to a bag or sweatshirt. Visit Girls Fashionably Late Boutique for the latest trends. Head over to Trolley Square and check out the new Macy’s or pop into the nearby TJ Maxx, Old Navy, TIlly’s or more. Want a great deal on some basics? Cross the street to Mario’s Family Clothing Center. Something to READ Barnes & Noble in Trolley Square is always an easy option, but did you know about the Friendly Used Bookstore in the Carlton Oaks Plaza? Located nearby, this volunteer-ran store helps give back to the programs offered at the library. Speaking of the library, head in there to rent some classics or new best sellers to inspire your shopping list. – Kristen Dare, ACE Santee Chamber of Commerce

MY HOMETOWN MEET MIKE CLINKENBEARD SANTEE RESIDENT AND FARMERS INSURANCE AGENT Nestled in the heart of our bustling town lies an insurance agency that has woven itself into the fabric of our community: the Clinkenbeard family’s Farmers Insurance Agency. What sets them apart from the rest isn't just their exemplary service; it's their unwavering commitment to giving back and fostering a spirit of togetherness. Founded in East County back in 1980, this agency didn't just see themselves as purveyors of insurance policies. Instead, they envisioned a dynamic relationship with the community—one built on trust, compassion, and mutual support. Moving their family into the community in 1996 and their agency to Santee in 2002, Mike and Marla Clinkenbeard have sat in their current location on Town Center Parkway since 2011. One of the most inspiring aspects of the Clinkenbeard’s Insurance Agency is their dedication to community initiatives. Their family has been incredibly involved in youth sports, the Santee School District Foundation, the March of Dimes and especially, the Santee Chamber of Commerce. Their family, life and business is truly focused in Santee, making this city more than just their home and their contributions are ingrained in the town's narrative. The husband and wife team also had some key involvement from their kids-turnedstaff. Daughter Madeline is their current Agency Manager, their son Adam has taken over an agency in La Mesa after 7 years in their Santee office, and long-time employee Nicki has been like a bonus family member to their staff. The agency's success isn't solely measured in profits; it's gauged by the positive impact their entire team creates in the lives of those they serve. As Mike has said, “Moving to Santee was one of the best things we ever did for our family and for our business. This is a tremendous community for raising kids and making friends. There’s so much to do or you can just relax at one of the many parks or Santee Lakes. From the point of view of our business, the people of Santee have a lot of pride in their community and in their homes and businesses. These are the types of clients that we look for and enjoy taking care of.” Additionally, their commitment to local business has proven to be another core strength of their team. With longtime clients such as TCB Embroidery, Lloyd’s Collision & Paint Center, Pepper Farm Deli, Raceway Electric & Solar, Expressions Dance & Movement Center and Mission Realty Group to name a few. Now helping many Santee residents obtain home insurance during a time where the insurance industry is in turmoil, Mike and Marla are actively preparing for the next generation to continue what they've started, knowing Santee is a great place to own a business and raise a family. Stop by their location at 235 Town Center Parkway or give them a call to see how they can help you, your family or your business: 619.442.0415 – Kristen Dare, ACE Santee Chamber of Commerce

5 WAYS TO CELEBR ATE 5 reasons why celebrating the magic of the holiday season through volunteer work holds such a powerful impact. Some of our personal favorites are the amazing service clubs in Santee (like the Rotary and Kiwanis Clubs) or the many churches who offer endless ministries and give-back opportunities.

1.

Spreading Joy and Hope: The holidays can be a challenging time for many people. Volunteering spreads cheer, kindness, and hope to those who may feel lonely, forgotten, or in need. Whether it's serving meals at a shelter or visiting seniors in nursing homes, your efforts can significantly brighten someone's day.

2.

Building

Community

and

Connection:

The

emphasize

togetherness. Volunteering brings people from different backgrounds together for a common cause. It fosters a sense of community and unity, allowing individuals to bond over shared experiences while making a positive impact. 3.

Teaching Gratitude and Empathy: Volunteering encourages reflection on one's blessings. It exposes individuals to different realities and challenges, fostering empathy and understanding. This experience can cultivate a sense of gratitude for what one has and a desire to help those who are less fortunate.

4.

Creating Lasting Memories: Volunteering during the holidays often involves creating memorable moments. Whether it's organizing a toy drive for children or participating in a charity event, these experiences can leave a lasting impression, shaping values and perspectives for years to come.

5.

Promoting Personal Growth: Volunteering offers an opportunity for personal growth. It allows individuals to develop new skills, gain valuable experiences, and boost self-esteem by contributing positively to society. It can also be a great way to learn about oneself and discover passions for making a difference.

HONORING SACRIFIC E FAMI LY AU TOM OTIV E COM PA NY D ONATES V EHI CL E TO G OL D STAR FAMI LY

In a heartwarming display of gratitude and support, a local familyowned automotive company has extended a generous hand to a Gold Star family, honoring their sacrifice and service to the nation. The touching gesture not only embodies the spirit of giving but also pays tribute to the selfless dedication of military families. The Gold Star distinction represents the families who have lost a loved one in military service, a symbol of profound sacrifice and resilience. To acknowledge and uplift one such family, the Lloyd family (Lloyd’s Collision & Paint Center), known for its community involvement and commitment to service, stepped forward with an act of unparalleled kindness. Earlier this year, the Lloyd’s purchased Sparky’s Transmission and moved it to its new home on Wheatlands Avenue. When they asked the Santee and Lakeside Chambers to help with their grand opening, we were all in for a sweet surprise. The Lloyd’s partnered with the National Auto Body Council and Recycled Rides as they acquired a donated vehicle from Allstate Insurance agent, Jim Kelly; during a solemn yet uplifting ceremony at their shop, the Lloyd’s presented the

Open vehicle to a local Gold Star family, acknowledging their unwavering strength and acknowledging the immeasurable loss they have endured.

The atmosphere was charged with emotion and gratitude as representatives from the company and the local community gathered to witness this touching moment. The family, visibly moved by the gesture, expressed their heartfelt appreciation for the support extended to them during their challenging times. Owner Bob Lloyd shared, "Our company has always believed in giving back to our community, and this was a chance to focus it on someone who had given so much for our country. This donation is a small token of our immense gratitude for the sacrifices made by our military families. We hope this vehicle serves as a symbol of our ongoing support and appreciation." The donated vehicle symbolizes more than just a mode of transportation; it represents a lifeline, offering convenience, mobility, and a sense of stability to the honored family. Beyond the practicality, it embodies the community's solidarity and acknowledges the immeasurable sacrifice made by the fallen soldier and their family. The compassionate act by these local businesses not only highlights their commitment to corporate social responsibility but also serves as an inspiration for others to contribute and support the Gold Star families in our communities. As the Gold Star family drives away in their new vehicle, they carry not only the keys but also the collective gratitude and support of a compassionate community, serving as a testament to the enduring spirit of unity and benevolence. – Kristen Dare, ACE Santee Chamber of Commerce

S OCIAL IZIN G SAN TEE Last month the Santee Chamber of Commerce held our 5th annual Veterans Appreciation Golf Tournament held at Carlton Oaks Golf Course. I’ve been overwhelmed with gratitude from support and kind words, hearing from several people how good the event is and yet how it still “gets better each year”. I don’t say that to brag, but since I was able to work with such an amazing team, I will. Starting with my volunteer event Chair, Mike Aiken: Mike has an incredible work ethic and a drive to get things done. He is responsible for getting the pieces to fit together for our day to look the way it does. Next my Board: I have an incredible Board of Directors at the Chamber (including Mike) who contribute their time, talent and treasure to see these events take shape so we can hit the ground running. Of course, my staff and Carlton Oaks Staff/Volunteers: This year it consisted of two amazing gals, Heather and Caitlyn, on my team who put in extreme hours and never without smiles on their faces along with many others who were onsite from dusk till dawn on the golf course. Our sponsors and donors: These businesses (many of them veteran owned) gave so much to be active and participating on the course that day. Local Veteran Service Organizations: These resources are vital to keep our Veteran community enriched with the benefits they deserve. The Golfers: These ranged from community folks, business members, first responders, and more to make a fun and exciting tournament. But mostly, OUR VETERANS: You played a round of golf, sure, but that can’t begin to even scratch the surface of how much we wish we could give back to you. From my childhood friend and former Marine (Jared Johnson), to Navy vet dad (Tom Charpentier), to our friends who return each year representing all other branches, thank you so much for your contributions to our freedom – you mean so much. Kristen Dare, ACE Santee Chamber of Commerce
