2022 is off and running and I am so excited to see where this year takes us. After many postponements, cutbacks, canceled events and more, it's so delightful to see this year show signs of promise as doors are reopening and new doors swing open I never knew existed. There are many wonderful community events to look forward to (see page 35 for some of our recommendations) but a personal favorite of mine is the annual Santee Street Fair. After a two-year hiatus, we are thrilled to be hosting this event again, offering the largest community event in town. Be sure to check out more details on page 2.

As we reflect on those 'new doors' that have opened, there have been literal cases of this with new businesses popping up around the city. Since March of 2020, there have been over 200 new business licenses filed for at City Hall. That’s over 200 people who entered this pandemic with quite the admirable mindset. True, many were probably already in process and had no choice to continue, but among those, I am happy to announce not ONE has opened and then had to close their doors. Among those have been well over 2 dozen that have joined the chamber, learning more about us and who we are. So, for those who need it, let me reintroduce ourselves!

The Santee Chamber is:

A Convener of Leaders and Influencers. We represent business to government for positive results. We regularly represent legislative advocacy and champion policy initiatives that advance the region’s economic climate, quality of life and support our business community.

A Champion for a Stronger Community. We are the local voice of business and it is our duty to elevate our regional strengths and identity. We help businesses prosper by providing the information and resources they need to grow and expand, thus strengthening economic development and promoting community enhancement.

If your business, or a business you know, can benefit from these things, we are here, door wide open. In fact, check out page 33 on where that door will soon be located!

HELLO SANTEE !

Chair of the Santee Chamber of Commerce, I feel blessed with the connections I have made. These owners and representatives I have joined with are hardworking, community-loving people. They are not only my “neighbors”, many are now my friends. As Santee business owners and locals we share so much in common and I truly value the energy of these working relationships.

While we all know the importance of shopping local—the Santee Chamber of Commerce will continue to discuss and promote local businesses and highlight the good in our community. Although the last two years were a challenge, I'd like to say thank you for your continued support of Santee commerce and the Santee Chamber.

Santee Chamber of Commerce, 2022 Chair

It has been quite a year — make that two.

Please continue your unwavering loyalty to shop local. I see it all the time. I see you. I see the personal recommendations of your favorite businesses on social media. I see support for new businesses with posts, photos, and reviews. This community is truly one-of-a-kind. Thank you for the inspiration and support— onward and upward and shop Santee!

Like many others, my husband and I own a small business in Santee. We can honestly say we have received more value out of our involvement with the Santee Chamber than we have put in. The comradery amongst business owners has grown stronger as we all faced new challenges these past two years. From knowledge-sharing to empathy, to discussing employees' needs, upskilling, and safety measures—real growth while presented with tough Assituations.theappointed

Looking ahead this year, the Chamber of Commerce is working diligently on planning events and building on value to our members and our community. Be on the lookout for upcoming events posted on social media and the website (SanteeChamber.com). Watch for three more issues of this publication, The Santee Magazine (you are reading 1 of 4 planned for this year).

My husband and I grew up in Santee. We chose to stay and raise our children here. It is the birthplace of our second-generation family electrical business; started in a Santee garage by my father-in-law. The value of connections and working relationships was something my Dad instilled in me. He was a previous Santee Chamber Director and served with The Lions Club, Rotary, and Boys and Girls Club. I have seen the good that comes from being active in the community in which I live.

The Santee Chamber of Commerce will celebrate its 67th anniversary this year. That is 67 years of advocating for local business. The entrepreneurial spirit found amongst my fellow members is inspiring and they keep showing up. This. Organization. Is. A. Gem.

Fun Fact: (Something I absolutely love about them!) They are one of the few businesses open 24-hours in East County!

Fun Fact: They also have ice cream on their menu!

Kristen’s Menu Favorite: A chocolate bar for me, a bearclaw for my husband, and maple bars for our Honorablekids!Mentions for other donut treats: Honey Donuts, Pink Donuts, Bagel & Donut Bar

Originally named Zona’s Donuts back in the 1960s, Mary’s Donuts has become a town staple and notable favorite among many. Just as iconic is Mary herself! Mrs. Hennessy can still be found most mornings at her shop, reading the paper and chatting with guests.

Fun Fact: Handel’s does catering and has fundraising opportunities!

Honorable Mentions for other cold treats: Baskin-Robbins, Cold Stone Creamery, Dairy Queen, Go Get Yogurt, Penguin Yogurt

A special edition to our town, this ice cream store opened officially at the end of last July after much anticipation from the locals! This project was extra special as another chamber member completed the construction on the building, TDT Construction. A special thanks to our cover models and 92071 royalty, Miss Santee Althea Valdez and Miss Teen Santee Ainsley Anderson.

Honorable Mentions for other cookie and pastry treats: Baklava King, Nat’s Sweets

Crumbl Cookies

One of our newest sweet spots in town, Crumbl came in right in time for the holidays, opening this past November in the heart of Trolley Square. Owners Cody and Adrianne Fowkes have jumped right into this community, proving to be as sweet as the treats they offer in their store. Their menu is small but mighty and I love their many options for obtaining their goodies! In store, curbside pick up, or delivery (for a fee).

Kristen’s Menu Favorite: The classic Milk Chocolate Chip is my go-to but I was pleasantly surprised at the Cornbread Cookie!

Santee has a sweet tooth and I couldn’t be happier about it! We have always had a great selection of great eateries, but it’s hard to ignore the influx of dessert-esque businesses who have planted their flag in our zip code. As a membership-based business organization, we have several of these folks as members and thought we’d share a few about them. Donuts

This sweet shop in town just celebrated 10 years in business last month! Owned and operated by mother/daughter duo, Ann Montgomery and Yvette Nolta, they have a rotating menu of flavors with a few staples always offered. They take custom orders and often cater weddings and other large events, some as far away as Las Vegas!

“A simple thank you seems so inadequate,” said Anne Montgomery, co-owner of The Cupcake Store, talking to customers who have been supporting her familyowned business during the coronavirus pandemic.

Honorable Mentions for other baked treats: Eccentric International Chefs, Nothing Bundt Cakes

Handel's Ice Cream

With all these amazing, sweet stops around town, we can’t help but be excited!

But Santee is known for much more than delicious desserts (I mean, don’t get me started on the amount of chicken options we have!). As new places pop up, the Santee Chamber encourages you to stay up to date on all food and beverage businesses in town and continue to dine locally.

Did you know that Expressions Dance offers more than just great dance classes? While students at Expressions can choose from over 100 weekly classes, they also develop their interests and talents through our competitive teams, intensive tracks, and leadership development programs. ECBC and Performing Groups are held in June.

At Expressions, our students are learning more than just dance skills, they are learning life lessons. Starting at the age of 10, students can apply to enter our Teaching Assistant Program and enroll in weekly Leadership classes. These students give back by helping younger students on their dance journey, assisting with studio events, and serving in the community. We know that dancers are both athletes and artists and that it takes focus and commitment to balance devotion to the arts and schoolwork. That’s why EDMC is proud to host both a Junior and a Secondary chapter of the National Honor Society for Dance Arts, which recognizes dancers for their commitment to the arts, excellent grades, and community service. At Expressions, we are empowering the future, one class at a time!

They will also perform with Moscow Ballet’s Great Russian Nutcracker in December. EDMC’s Performing Groups are for dancers who want to receive additional training and performance opportunities. The Santee Ravens have been a part of the East County community since 2009, but, this year, the Ravens’ cheer teams stole the spotlight at the national level! At the Jamz Cheer & Dance National competition in Las Vegas, the PeeWee and Junior Varsity (JV) teams took first place! The JV team also won Grand Champions of their division! Melissa McDuffee, the Ravens Cheer Director of 10 years, said, “It was so hard on the girls to have their season canceled and miss out on cheering due to COVID, but to come back this year and win, we are so proud! It’s a good feeling to come back full-swing[...].” Congratulations, ladies! Your drive and passion to succeed at this level has made Santee proud!

If brunch is your favorite meal of the day, then get excited! The Broken Yolk Cafe is coming to Santee Trolley Center. The Broken Yolk Cafe has been known for their great selection of wonderful food and quality service since 1979. They are most well known for their signature benedicts and full size mimosas.

Real Estate Highlight

You may have heard that we are in a seller’s market, but that really only matters if you take advantage of it! Many homeowners are selling their homes at prices magnitudes higher than they purchased it, and they are using that money to pre-retire, pay off debts, and check off bucket list items! Just this past month, I helped a seller of a 1960’s 3 bedroom/2 bathroom home of less than 1100 square feet close on the sale of their property for $810,000.

The high demand for homes means that you get to customize your selling experience. You can list as is, renovate/update to get a higher sale price, or sell fast for cash now. They say timing is everything, so if you’ve considered selling your home to resize or relocate, or just to cash out while the getting is good, now could be a great time. Call me to see if selling sooner rather than later makes sense for you. 619.855.1151

MY HOMETOwN

From a young age, my Dad instilled in me to have a servant's heart. My Dad is a Vietnam Veteran and helps run local Veterans halls (VFWs). He would always try to find an elderly veteran in need. And me and my brother were always the volunteers that were there to help. He had us painting homes, doing yard work, helping people move, doing garage sales, or any other random thing to help a Veteran in need. What I took from that is, the whole trick to life is to always look for ways to help people solve problems or get through challenging times. In return we have been blessed and the community has given back to me tenfold. I thank my Dad all the time for getting me involved in philanthropy from a young age.

daniel buksaLE ADING w ITH A MISSION

You have been in Santee your whole life, what makes Santee so special to you? Santee is very different from other communities throughout San Diego County. It is a great place to raise a family and has a hometown feel. We are known for having some of the highest rated schools. We have amazing community leaders. And in time of need, very few communities get together and have each other’s backs like Santee. There is something to say about how people who are raised and grew up here never leave and raise their families here.

Over the past couple of years we have been involved in running or assisting in hundreds of charity events. Some of the events include charity for local sports teams, Pop Warner football, little league baseball, multiple high school sports. We have financially assisted families going through major health challenges, hosted PTSA meetings for multiple Santee Schools, put on Father/Daughter Dances for local elementary schools when it’s difficult financially to have them on campus, and helped with local Veterans in times of need… just about anyone who approaches us with a local family in need. What we found is with all the money we have raised over the years, we could get more of the community and local business involved if we had a foundation where we could get donations from the community and be able to give tax benefits for those who contribute. We are always looking for ideas to help in the community. So if anyone is interested in volunteering, we always need help!

– Kristen Dare Santee Chamber of Commerce, CEO

You are constanly giving back to our community, why is this so important to you?

Why do you find it important to "Shop Santee" and support our local businesses?

Being born and raised in Santee, I see that our community is our family. By helping local small businesses and shopping locally, it helps our community thrive. Especially during the pandemic, I saw how important it was to help support Santee small businesses. These businesses are our neighbors and friends trying to support their families, and by shopping locally we are helping our Santee family in a big way.

“ I see that our community is our family.”

Your résumé is the primary tool for communicating information about yourself to prospective employers. Résumés follow a fairly standard format, which include Header, Objective, Skills, Experience, and Education. The layout of your résumé will change depending on the amount of work experience you have, as well as your level of experience in the field for which you are applying. If you don’t have much experience in the specific career field you are applying for, it’s best to detail your past work experience and relate the skills required in your previous jobs to the new job.

| TSM32 | TSM30

Preparing Your Resume

Skills: if you have limited experience, list your basic job skills. For the more experienced, include as many of the skills that are required for the job as possible, including computer skills, knowledge of specific business software, even specific tasks that you know the job will require.

Education: include full details on your education including degrees and awards received. include any relevant training classes for previous jobs.

Employment History or Work Experience: if you have experience, always include your most recent work experience at the top and include all relevant experience no matter how old. if you’ve had many job changes or short stints at jobs, be sure to explain why, but do not blame the job or previous employer.

The Objective or Qualifications Summary: Keep objective simple. Don’t write fluffy statements about your desire to change the world through this job. Try to convey why you should be hired—your desire, work ethic, etc. If you have solid qualifications for the job, list those instead.

XL Staffing Advertorial

The Header should contain full name and all necessary contact information. Provide at least one phone number. if you have a cell phone, give that number. Be wary of any e-mail address or website URL you provide as you may be judged on the content of your website or the name on your e-mail address.

Do not lie, and do not stretch the truth. Have quality copies made from a fresh master copy. included below are explanations of each section of your résumé and a sample résumé outline.

Needless to say, the Chamber is both proud and excited to announce that we will formally be taking up office space in this historical jewel in our town, and we look forward to welcoming the public to explore the space this spring. Check the Chamber’s website for more updates as they develop: www.SanteeChamber.com/News

The Edgemoor Barn is unique, absolutely, but it’s remained special through the efforts of an organization in town dedicated to its upkeep and committed to it being a home for Santee’s rich history: the Santee Historical Society. Throughout the pandemic, the Historical Society has been forced to offer limited access for the public to access the barn. With that, many challenges have ensued as it is a 100-percent volunteer run organization.

Visit the Santee Historical Museum in the Santee Barn on Magnolia Avenue. Check our website for Open Hours and Special Events

Authorized by the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, the National Park Service’s National Register of Historic Places is part of a national program to coordinate and support public and private efforts to identify, evaluate, and protect America’s historic and archeological resources.

Chamber CEO, Kristen Dare, and Historical Society Board Member, Arli Wolfson, had a long working relationship with one another as they had been collaborating on projects since Dare’s onboarding at the Chamber back in 2014. With some quick re-introductions to the other board members of the Historical Society, it was an easy fit for each organization to see how they could benefit from partnering. The Chamber needed a forever home, and this Historical Society is charged with preserving the barn’s existence!

A Walk Back in Time with the Santee Historical Society

As the Historical Society was facing a decrease in help, the Santee Chamber of Commerce was simultaneously seeking a new office space to occupy in 2022. Through much of the pandemic, the Chamber staff had been working remotely and found themselves ready to be more accessible in the new year. It seemed like a great time for two long standing organizations to have a conversation about sharing resources!

Eugene “Gene” Chubb has been a part of our East County community from the moment he was born in La Mesa. In 1948, Gene graduated from Grossmont High School and his family founded La Mesa Block Company. Gene then moved on to San Diego State University where he met Marvin Finch, owner of R.C.P. Company and who would eventually become his business partner.

It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of Gene in his Santee home on Thursday, February 3rd. Services are being planned and we send our heartfelt condolences to his wife, Susie, and his extended family.

35TSM |

Gene was a beloved member of our community and will be dearly missed.

In Memoriam

Gene took a break from the company for a couple years starting in 1952 to serve in the United States Army during the Korean War. The merger of Gene and Marvin’s companies to form R.C.P. Block & Brick, Inc. occurred in 1966 and the company has grown to take its place as a leading manufacturer in San Diego and beyond. Gene has been recognized and has received awards from multiple organizations during his 68 years of involvement in the block industry.

Gene moved to Santee in 1969 and quickly delved into the community and watched it grow. He became involved in the Santee Chamber of Commerce and took positions in Chamber leadership for many years and remained involved with the Chamber even after his retirement. It was our pleasure to name him our Honorary Chairman of the 2016 Black Tie Gala.
