After an insane 2020, here we are rounding out 2021 and I can honestly say that I am so proud to be in my role at the Santee Chamber. I honor the contributions of our local businesses, nonprofit organizations and residents which make the city of Santee not just our favorite place to do business, but our home.
If you were anything like me, the reason you’re still here is because of the amazing team you had in place. One major difference I’d like to point out about the majority of my team, is that they aren’t on my payroll. With a revolving Board of Directors of about 20 individuals, these business leaders showed their true professional dedication to our organization as they leaned in with great force. As they all conducted balancing acts worthy of the finest circus, they simultaneously stepped up the amount of hours they gave to make sure the chamber stayed alive.

Through my involvement with the chamber of commerce I have come to know many of our local business owners. Behind every business is a story, a family, and hopes for the future. There’s no doubt this is a hard time to be a business owner. But I believe our local businesses are worth fighting for. Entrepreneur Nicole Snow said, “A small business is an amazing way to serve and leave an impact on the world you live in.” We can help Santee businesses to continue to make a positive impact on our community.
A year ago I wrote to you about my realization that, when it came to enduring the pandemic, we were not running a sprint, but a marathon. Only now am I realizing, it’s possible we were only on mile 9 or 10! When I think about what has carried me through and given me the strength to keep running, I think of Ascommunity.humanbeings, we are built to thrive in communities. Dean Ornish said, “The need for connection and community is primal, as fundamental as the need for air, water, and food.” During this time of great trial I have felt the strength and support of our dance family, I have turned to other local business owners and connected through the Chamber of Commerce, and I have looked to our city leaders for help and guidance. All of them have shown up in amazing ways.

What would the holidays be without sweet treats? Daniel Buksa of Mission Realty is baking up a storm, “We have a holiday tradition where we bake thousands of Christmas cookies and give them out to people we love. We deliver to more than 300 people throughout the community.”
Corner gets a head start with her End of October Christmas Kickoff with gifts and ornament shopping, while Joe Mackey of XL Staffing likes to go over the top, decorating inside and out National Lampoon style!
Mike and Melissa Dombo of Raceway Electric said, “We love decorating our block with our neighbors, hosting friends and family for holiday inspired dinners, walking the lights in Starlight Circle, and picking out our Christmas tree at Family Christmas Tree Farm.”
A tradition of giving Daniel Buksa of Mission Realty Group and Kyle Whissel of Whissel Realty are great examples of how healthy competition can motivate people to grow. These companies
are always striving to out-give and out-serve each other and our community is better for their generosity. “We love helping out the Santee Santas organization to provide a great Christmas to families in need in the Santee community”, said Kyle. Daniel and Mission Realty also donate to Santee Santa’s with a drive to collect bicycles, footballs, and sports toys. “We call it our bikes and balls drive. I’ve seen kids in the community receive these bikes and I’ve seen how it changes their lives and puts a smile on their faces”, said Daniel.

The Santee Chamber of Commerce hosts their annual Taste of Santee each December. Not only does this event help spread the word about our fabulous local restaurants, but the chamber partners with Santee Santas and the Santee Food Bank to help families in our community. Santee Santas serves roughly 250 families each holiday season, helping to bring holiday cheer during one of the most difficult times of the year for a family with financial insecurities. The Santee Food Bank is also helping out with their three different weekly distribution days which help an average of 400 families a month! Taste of Santee will be held on Thursday, December 2nd at Pathways Community Church.

September 1st marked an important date as the groundbreaking ceremony took place for what has become the “Santee Veterans Memorial and Monument Bridge”, at the southeast corner of Mast Boulevard and Fanita Parkway. Santee has been my home for many years, providing our family’s third generation of residents a safe place to call our own. Some of my Santee neighbors have many more generations that lead to them being here, and for others, they may have just recently made Santee their hometown. San Diego as a region is often known as a melting pot and I’ve always found it captivating that so many people come here from various parts of the country and end up staying long term. It is a wonderful place to be.

Ranson said the monument recognizes the origins of Veterans Day and the ending of World War I “on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.” The structure has an inside and outer wall, with wrap-around lettering
One of the many things that makes Santee great is our amazing residents, strong business community and promising leadership in government. When talking about the Veterans Memorial project, I get to say a name which humbly refers to all of those mentioned attributes: Dustin Trotter. Dustin is a longtime resident and business owner whose vision of bringing a monument to town has finally become a reality. It was about five years ago when he had an idea to spearhead this project
but it really started to take shape towards the end of last year. Once the project was approved by the City, Dustin came to the Santee Chamber of Commerce and initiated a partnership to collaborate and complete the space in time to dedicate it back to the City on Veterans Day 2021.
Kicking off this project has meant relying on private donations and fundraising efforts through the Santee Chamber. Many residents, businesses, services organizations and more have made generous contributions to help kickstart this labor of love. Nearly 100 people attended the groundbreaking ceremony back in September where many were able to sign the beams which were used for construction the following week. At the start of the ceremony, it was my personal privilege to read the names of the 13 servicemembers who had been killed in Kabul earlier that week, and sign their names to a beam to forever honor their service and memorialize their names in our town. This space we have created is about every Veteran, though. The memorial provides a place to honor and recognize them, remember the wars in which they fought, and show appreciation for their Designedservice.

U.S. Navy veteran Jay Ellis said he couldn’t help getting choked up at the groundbreaking for the Santee Veterans Memorial Monument near Santee Lakes. Ellis, 80, a native of Indiana and Santee resident for more than 40 years, served three tours in Vietnam on the USS Henry B. Wilson (DDG-7) guided missile ship. Ellis held both his hands over his heart as he explained how monuments are deeply important to those who have served. “They are long, long overdue,” he said. “I wear my Vietnam Veterans hat almost all the time and I’ve had people come up, young people come up and thank me for my service, and it moves me,” Ellis said, with his daughter and two grandchildren nearby. “I’ll always say, ‘Thank you for your support.’ I was at a Marine Corps graduation and a young

on two sides at the top of the monument that reads “Land of the Free/Because of the Brave.” There are also six seals and six concrete seating cylinders on site to pay tribute to each branch of the military — Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard and Space Force. A bronze-toned wreath adorns the top of the interior. The monument sits at an angle to the site, creating a layout with no definitive front or back, giving equal importance to each branch of the military. A stone sign noting the new name for the bridge that runs across Mast — Santee Veterans Memorial Bridge — has also been placed. The bridge was first dedicated in 1992 as Santee Lakes

The ICOC conducted a review of bond fund expenditures and the annual audit report and has found that the bond funds were spent in accordance with the bond language. The ICOC has been impressed by the commitment of the staff in seeking the greatest cost benefit during construction and dedication to reducing taxpayer costs through careful planning.

In November 2018, voters in the Santee School District approved Measure S, a general obligation bond measure. This measure authorized the sale of $15.37 million of previously approved but unissued Proposition R (2006) bonds. Measure S accelerated the timing for the District to be able to fund school improvements but did not result in an increase in the total amount of voter-approved debt.

Joseph Perricone serves as the ICOC Vice-Chair and is in his second term on the ICOC. He is active in the Builders Association and the Better Business Bureau, which represents the business community in Santee. Joe owned a general construction company for over 20 years in San Diego. He has two children that attend Carlton Oaks School.
Erin Garcia is serving in her first term as a member of the ICOC. Erin is the Assistant Superintendent of Business Services for Lakeside Union School District and has over 18 years of school finance experience. Both of her daughters attended Rio Seco School and she has lived in the Santee School District for over eight years.
• Regular Meetings. The Committee is required to conduct at least one annual meeting, the purpose of which is to receive the reports and documents required to be provided to the Committee by the Board, and to approve a report of the Committee.

Beth Rackliffe is serving her first term for the ICOC as a member. Beth is currently the principal of Loma Elementary School in Spring Valley and was previously a math teacher. She is a member of the San Diego County Taxpayers Association and has lived in the Santee School District for over two years.

Linda has also served on the Board of Directors for the Santee School District Foundation.
Kai Ramer is serving in his first term as a member of the Measure S ICOC but has been a member of previous Santee School District ICOCs. Kai is the President/Chief Operating Officer of Rick Engineering Company. He has lived in the Santee School District for over 30 years and his four children attended Cajon Park School and two grandchildren attended Sycamore Canyon School.

With the recognition of Jokerst as a 2022 Teacher of the Year, GUHSD is the only California school district to have an educator named among the state’s top teachers for 2021 and 2022. El Capitan High School Economics and Government teacher Jay Tweet was named a 2021 Teacher of the Year finalist.

We became aware that one of our chuch had a need to have extensive work done in their parking lot. They had some money set aside for this purpose but their congregation was mostly elderly. It was a struggle to get bids, and certainly to do any of the work required for this project.
