Contractors have finished work at a 154-bed homeless shelter in Venice, Councilmember Mike Bonin has announced.

The project has not been without controversy. Opponents have raised issue with the shelter’s location, worrying that the site will disrupt the mostly residential neighborhood. In addition, there has been concern raised about the housing being within a 1,000-foot radius of Westminster Elementary School.

The Venice Stakeholders Association is in the midst of a legal battle against the City of Los Angeles over the project, saying the environmental review was unjustly fasttracked and did not take into account an increase in noise levels from individuals in the shelter or its air conditioning units.

In Bonin’s January newsletter sent out on Friday, it was stated that contractors have finished work on the 154-bed bridge housing shelter on Main Street in Venice.

Abbot Kinney Parking Meter Update No more meters, says Bonin

Last month an open house was held to discuss parking meters coming to Abbot Kinney Boulevard. Now Councilmember Mike Bonin has made a surprising announcement regarding parking on this iconic Venice street.

Last month, Yo! Venice reported that the Los Angeles Department of Transportation (LADOT) would be installing 196 parking meters on Abbot Kinney Boulevard. On February 5, however, Councilmember Mike Bonin announced that meters will no longer be installed.

“Based on your feedback, the Los Angeles Department of Transportation will not be installing additional parking meters on Abbot Kinney Boulevard,” Bonin wrote in a letter to Venice residents and stakeholders.

LADOT’s revised plans for street now includes marking 203 parking spaces along Abbot Kinney, installing parking sensors to collect real-time parking data and guide motorists to available spaces with smartphone apps, standardizing posted parking time limits at 2 hours between 8 AM and 8 PM and adding a series of motorcycle parking spaces.

In addition, LADOT will be installing nine new parking corrals for dockless scooters and e-bikes reorganizing passenger and commercial loading zones to allow traffic to flow more smoothly on the street.

Intersection to Commemorate Japanese Americans Renaming Lincoln and Venice intersection

In April of 1942, Arnold Maeda was 15 years old when he and his father Takeda were forcibly removed from their home and lined up on the northwest corner of an intersection in Venice. Now this intersection may be designated as a commemorative square by lawmakers.

“Instead of being worried about where we were going, I was obsessed with the fact that I had parted with my constant companion, my pet dog Boy. For a 15-year-old, that was unforgettably traumatic,” reads Arnold Maeda’s quote inscribed on a monument at the very corner of Lincoln Boulevard and Venice Boulevard where he and thousands of other people of Japanese ancestry were forced to report to in 1942 to be taken to the War Relocation Authority camp at Manzanar as prisoners.

In 2017, the Venice Japanese American Memorial Monument (VJAMM) was installed on this corner. Now in 2020, a bill going through Los Angeles City Council would rename the intersection where the monument stands as the “Venice Japanese American Memorial Monument (VJAMM) Square”.

The motion, submitted by Los Angeles City Councilmember Mike Bonin, would instruct the Los Angeles Department of Transporta-

The VJAMM Committee, an ad hoc group comprised of former internees and concerned citizens, has been working on this memorial since 2010. The idea for the memorial, however, originated over a decade ago with students from the New Media Academy at Venice High School. Their teacher, Phyllis Hayashibara, took up the cause and formed the VJAMM Committee, with already involved artists and activists in the Venice community. Rent Control Again: Is This Voted Needed?

It was a head-scratcher the other day when the AIDS Healthcare Foundation submitted more than 1 million voter signatures aiming to place comprehensive rent control before Californians next fall, just two years after they rejected the same idea by a 20 percent margin.

But no one in politics today seems to heed what the voters want: Anti-abortion advocates keep losing as they try again and again to enact parental

notification requirements for pregnant teenage girls who seek abortions. Bankruptcy judges and state regulators try hard to keep irresponsible utility companies and their monopolies afloat when the public and many elected officials would rather convert them to localized co-ops. And so on.

That’s also how it was last year when state lawmakers and Gov. Gavin Newsom enacted what they billed as America’s toughest rent controls just one year after voters decisively nixed them.

Now comes the Los Angeles-based AIDS Healthcare Foundation, seeking even tougher controls than voters rejected in 2018 or what’s been state law since Jan. 1.

Life Sentence for Local Man Who Murdered Father

By Sam Catanzaro A Culver City man will spend the rest of his life in prison for killing three men, including his father.

According to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office Juan Roberto Saucedo, 39, has pleaded no contest to the 2017 murder of his 67-year-old father, Robert, and two other men.

Saucedo, a Culver City resident, has been sentenced to three life prison terms without the possibility of parole in addition to 175 years to life in prison.

On September 3, 2017, Saucedo got into an argument with his father, Robert, 67, and his

father’s girlfriend at their Culver City residence.

Juan Saucedo then shot both of them, killing Robert and severely injuring the girlfriend, according to county prosecutors.

Saucedo then fled the house and carjack Jesus Estevez Martinez, 27, who was driving nearby, forcing Martinez to drive him to Lennox before fatally shooting him. From there, Saucedo went into another residence and fatally shot Arturo Canela Pulido, 47, prosecutors add.

Following that shooting, Saucedo shot into an occupied dwelling before shooting a man driving by as he attempted to carjack the man.

Saucedo also admitted to the special circumstance allegations of multiple murders involving the three killings and murder during the carjacking and kidnapping involving Martinez.

Prosecutors have not decided whether to seek the death penalty against Saucedo.

A homeless shelter for homeless veterans on the West Los Angeles VA is nearly complete, Councilmember Mike Bonin has announced.

In Bonin’s January newsletter, it was announced that work is nearly complete on a bridge housing shelter for homeless veterans on the West Los Angeles VA campus.

“The sprung structure tent has been erected on the site and construction crews anticipate work will be done within weeks, allowing the facility to open in early March,” reads the newsletter.

Once complete, the site will include two 40’ x 120’ tension membrane structures and modular trailers, which will be located within the VA campus near existing buildings and services.

The site will offer roughly 100 beds for currently homeless veterans, as well as storage for

residents, personal hygiene and laundry facilities, supportive and community engagement services, and 24-hour security.

This bridge housing facility will be temporary — and not to be visible from the exterior of the campus — as the VA constructs out its Draft Master Plan, which will provide 1200 units of permanent supportive housing on the campus.

The facility was expected to open in early 2019, but crews experienced a delay on the site when they uncovered old pipes that needed special attention as the site was prepared for the temporary structures.

In addition, mud from a rainy winter and asbestos that was discovered hindered the project.

Across the street at the West Los Angeles National Guard Armory, the federal government has approved plans to build a bridge housing center there for non-veteran homeless individuals in the area.

last weekend,” the Ruskin Theatre Group said in a Facebook post. “Orson was one of the most loving, kind, deeply dedicated, and charming men I have ever had the pleasure to know. I will miss him dearly.

We send him and his beloved Alley all the love we have at this time.”

In a press conference Friday evening, LAPD Captain Brian Wendling described the incident as a “jaywalking-type situation”.

“We encourage everybody to please cross at crosswalks, be really mindful of traffic. This is a huge problem on the Westside of Los Angeles,” Wendling said. “To save a few seconds sometimes people cross mid-block, and it’s just not worth it.”

By Sam Catanzaro Longtime actor and beloved Venice resident Orson Bean was fatally struck by a vehicle last Friday night in front of a Venice theatre where the 91-year-old was seeing his wife perform.

According to the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner, Bean’s death is being investigated as a “traffic-related” fatality.

Bean was walking near Venice Boulevard and

Shell Avenue when he was clipped by a vehicle and fell, the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), says. Bystanders attempted to warn a second driver that Bean was in the road but he also struct the 91-year-old actor. According to the LAPD, the second collision was fatal.

Both drivers stayed on the scene, police say.

According to witnesses, Bean’s wife of 27 years actress Alley Mills was on the scene as well. The couple was leaving the Pacific Resident Theatre (PRT) where Mills was performing.

LAFD: no investigation into M onday morning fire

The Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) put out a fire that broke out at a Westside homeless encampment Monday morning.

According to LAFD Public Information Officer Margaret Stewart, LAFD crews

responded to a rubbish fire reported at 6:29 a.m. on the 6000 block of Venice Boulevard under the 10 Freeway at a homeless encampment. The fire was quickly put out.

The LAFD says that the cause of the fire is unknown and that there will likely be no investigation into the cause of the fire.

No injuries occurred and no structures were damaged.

Individuals who have been free of symptoms for more than 21 days are no longer at risk.

“For those who are not protected, measles is a highly contagious and potentially severe disease that initially causes fever, cough, red, watery eyes, and, finally, a rash,” said Muntu Davis, MD, MPH, Los Angeles County Health Officer.

“Measles is spread by air and by direct contact even before you know have it. The MMR immunization is a very effective measure to protect yourself and to prevent the unintentional spread of this potentially serious infection to others.”

In 2019, there were 20 measles cases among Los Angeles County residents, in addition to 14 non-resident measles cases that traveled through Los Angeles County (excluding Long Beach and Pasadena as cases identified in those cities are reported by their local health departments).

Most of these cases were not immunized or did not know whether they had ever been immunized or previously infected with the measles virus.
