A Minute of Silence Observed Honoring Lives Lost in 9/11 Attacks 23 Years Ago

Swinerton Construction hosted a minute of silence Wednesday morning to honor the 23rd anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on our country, and all the brave civilians, firefighters, police, and first responders who stepped up to serve and

protect. “It is appropriate to note” Swinerton stated, “that those 343 Firefighters and 23 Police officers that died that day were well aware that by entering into the Towers likely meant that this would be their last act of service. Although the attacks were motivated by hatred, the

men and women that served that day, and for months afterward, were motivated by love”.

Swinerton invited all of the builders on their Modoc Medical Center projects, the Alturas Fire Department, Modoc Sheriff’s Office and Alturas Police Department to join

them for the one minute of silence beginning at 8:46am. As they and first responders observed the silent period, Swinerton encouraged everyone to consider how each individual can make the current project, this community, our Country, and the World a better place as did those we

Alturas’s Annual Balloon Fest Takes Off This Weekend

the beloved Balloon Fest!

Friday evening, September 13th, at 6 o’clock with a public meetand-greet at Holiday Market, where pilots and local sponsors will come together to discuss the weekend’s plans. It’s also a great opportunity

for the public to meet the pilots flying the balloons! In a special tradition, when a business sponsors a balloon, they will also help with setting up and taking down their balloon during the events. Saturday morning, the magic begins at dawn with the balloon launch at the field behind Modoc Medical Center (MMC). The launch is estimated

to take place at around 6:42am, with a pancake breakfast hosted by the Alturas Chamber beforehand at 6am. Breakfast plates will be available for just $5 per person. This breakfast will not only be a delicious way to start the day, but also serves as a fundraiser for the Chamber, with all proceeds helping cover event costs and pilot

honor today. Chad Day also prepared a moving presentation, where he rang a bell three times to honor all of the first responders’ lives that were lost that morning in the September 11th attacks.

Observers stood along the sidewalk of the Skilled Nursing Facility

job site on Nagle Street, and Swinerton placed an American flag on the main entry canopy. Swinerton shared, “Thank you all in advance for joining our project team in honoring those who died in the line of duty 23 years ago”.

expenses. Additionally, on Saturday the Modoc Alzheimer’s Awareness Color-Run, hosted by TEACH, will begin at 9am at the Warnerview Skilled Nursing Facility. This walk brings further meaning to the weekend, offering a chance for Modocers to come together in support of a worthy cause. Festivities will continue into Saturday evening at the Rotary Fields, starting at 5pm. The Alturas Art Center will be hosting “Art in the Park”, featuring a display of local art, where some pieces will be available for purchase as well. As dusk falls, the highly anticipated “Night Glow” event will take place, weather permitting.

Balloon pilots will tether their balloons and light them up in a breathtaking display of warm colors. Various booths will also be set up throughout the Rotary Fields, including

the Alturas Chamber who will be offering various refreshments during the magical evening. The weekend wraps up on Sunday morning with a final balloon launch, also at the field behind Modoc Medical Center, estimated for around 6:43am. Before the launch, attendees can enjoy a continental breakfast hosted by the Alturas Chamber for just $3 per person. With five balloons registered this year, up from last year’s three, the event is growing in size and excitement. “We just hope that the community comes out and enjoys it!” said Dianna Bass, the Alturas Chamber’s Secretary/Director. Whether you’re watching the dawn balloon launches, enjoying local art, or taking in the beauty of the Night Glow event, this year’s Balloon Fest is sure to be a weekend to remember.

Looking BaCk Letters to the editor

Dear Editor,

A couple weeks ago a felon living in Upper Cal Pines was arrested for starting a fire that spread but luckily contained quickly by firefighters. He was found to have stolen property of several residents up here. He was held one night and released and free to go back to his property. This man refuses to adhere to red flag warnings or high winds, makes a fire anytime he pleases. Now myself and my neighbors get to live in fear of this thief and arsonist. Why in the world is this man allowed to roam free causing headaches for the residents up here!? Why is he not in a jail cell? This is madness freeing this man to continue his crime sprees.

Dear Editor,

So another mentally ill kid has taken a gun (given to him by his messed up dad) to a school and he murdered 4 people at that school, two teachers and two kids. This is another deja vu of the Sandy Hook slaughter of over 20 tiny kids by a mentally ill teenager who was given guns by his messed up mom. This kind of madness has happened way too many times, and finally the messed up enabling parents are being arrested and charged with complicity in the killing of innocents by

their mentally ill kids. It’s about time!!

My friends all know that I am a Second Amendment advocate, and I own guns. Every rational American citizen should own guns, not only for self-protection but also to keep our government honest. My anti-guns Dem friends are ignorant of history in that the first thing every totalitarian regime has done when they’ve come to power is to seize guns from the citizenry. Mao did it, Stalin did it, Hitler did it, Pol Pot did it, Castro did it, and the list goes on. Indeed before guns were invented it was punishable by death for the peasantry to own spears, swords, bows-andarrows, etc. because the kings/queens/emperors made sure their subjects did not have the weaponry to rise up and overthrow them. The historychallenged Dems don’t know this FACT!! But our Founding Fathers knew this fact which is why they created the Second Amendment.

Y’all want to know what a rational gun owner does? When my decorated Iraq War hero son returned from war in 2012 he was clearly unstable. War had tweaked his mind. He was suicidal and angry, a nasty combination. He started talking crazy stuff about getting even with people so I got rid of all but one of my guns. I took my 9mm pistol, my .22250 rifle, my 30-30 rifle, my .22 semi-automatic rifle, my .38 revolver, and my .22 target practice long-barrel pistol to a

gun shop in Mountain View and sold them for a dime on the dollar. The only gun I kept was the side-by-side 12g shotgun my grandpa gave to me that was manufactured in the 1890s. But that turned out to be a mistake because I got a call from the Pleasanton PD one day and they told me they had pulled my son over for speeding and he was high on something so they searched his car. They found my grandpa’s shotgun in my son’s trunk. It wasn’t loaded (my son had no ammo for it) but the mere fact he had gotten into my condo in Mountain View and took the shotgun was disturbing. I told the police to destroy the shotgun even though it had great sentimental value for me.

That’s what a sensible, rational, morally responsible gun owner does when he/she sees potential that someone might use his/her guns to do bad things. I own guns again but my stilltroubled war veteran son does not know where I live now so he will never have access to my new guns.

Any parent or grandparent or aunt/ uncle or sibling that makes access to guns available to a mentally unstable relative NEEDS to be arrested, charged, prosecuted, and imprisoned when the unstable relative uses the guns to do great harm to others. Gun owners that do not agree with this are consummate idiots!!

The 24th Annual Woolgathering: A Week of Creative Craft and Colorful Tradition

The 24th Annual Woolgathering at Warner Mountain Weavers in Cedarville has come to a close. This week-long celebration of fiber arts, dyeing, and traditional craftsmanship showcased the talents of the instructors, the beauty of nature’s dye sources, and the enthusiasm of both seasoned crafters and beginners alike.

The first day of the event began with a “Beginning Spinning” workshop upstairs with Melissa Harris. Under her guidance, students learned the fundamentals of creating yarn from wool. Meanwhile, out back, the dye pots were started for the week’s creativity. Vibrant colors came from plants like brazil wood, wolf moss, madder, indigo, weld, black-eyed Susan, and coreopsis.

Those that missed day 2, missed out on some of the most stunning colors that nature has to offer! Louisa Hunter and Jeannie Kaiser worked their magic, showing participants

how to extract beautiful pigments from plants grown right in Warner Mountain Weavers’ backyard! One student even crafted their firstever 2-ply skein, thanks to expert instruction in Ms. Harris’ color and plying class. The third and fourth days dove into the art of Woven Shibori and Shibori dyeing. “Shibori is a traditional form of Japanese tie dye. It’s normally done by using a basting-style stitch through existing fabric, and pulling the fabric into tight gathers that protect the fabric when in the dye pot. This creates beautiful patterns that are wonderful to see emerge. In this class we will be creating the actual fabric on our looms, weaving the drawing threads in as we go. It’s an indirect way to weave a pattern, and it’s very fun!” Warner Mountain Weavers explained. The entirety of the Shibori dyeing day was dedicated to experimenting with five different types of indigo vats where participants

were given free rein to try countless techniques. Each piece created was a unique reflection of the maker’s personal style and creative flair!

The final day of the Woolgathering was a wonderful conclusion to the week’s creative festivities. Kay Antuñez hosted a tour of Oz Garden, where participants experienced the vibrant surroundings and had fun exploring with fresh Indigo. There was laughter, learning, and a sense of camaraderie as the group experimented with this versatile plant.

The 24th Annual Woolgathering was an unforgettable experience for everyone involved, blending tradition, innovation, and community. It was a week filled with creativity, color, and connection, leaving many participants excited for next year’s event!

The Resilient Red-Tailed Hawk

Red-tailed Hawks are one of the most widespread and commonly seen birds of prey in North America. Known for their distinctive reddishbrown tail, these majestic raptors are often seen soaring above open fields, perched on telephone poles, or circling over highways in search of prey. With a wingspan of up to four feet, they are powerful fliers, capable of reaching impressive speeds as they dive to capture their next meal. Primarily hunters of small mammals like rodents and rabbits, Red-

tailed Hawks play a vital role in controlling these populations, making them an important part of the ecosystem. Their keen eyesight allows them to spot movement from high above, and once they’ve locked onto their target, they descend with incredible precision.

These hawks are highly adaptable, thriving in a variety of environments from deserts and grasslands to suburban areas and even urban parks. They are also known for their striking calls — a high-pitched scream that is often used in movies to represent any bird of prey, regardless of species.

Red-tailed Hawks also

mate for life, and during breeding season they can be seen performing aerial displays of acrobatics, sometimes locking talons mid-air. They build large, sturdy nests in tall trees or on cliff ledges, where they raise one to three young each year. The young hawks, known as eyasses, fledge after about six weeks but remain dependent on

their parents for several more months as they learn to hunt. With their impressive hunting skills, adaptability, and striking appearance, Red-tailed Hawks are not only a symbol of wild, untamed nature but also a reminder of the intricate balance that sustains our natural world.

Extraordinary Hunter Noack Concert Coming to Eagleville

Surprise Valley Culture and Arts is excited to present Hunter Noack’s

In a Landscape: Classical Music in the Wild. The concert, which is free to residents of Modoc County, will take place on September 21, 2024, at 4 pm at the old Eagleville airport.

Hunter Noack has transformed the experience of listening to classical music by setting his concerts in dramatic natural landscapes around the American west. Imagine that instead of hearing music in a stuffy auditorium you could enjoy the magical sounds of a virtuoso pianist surrounded by mountains and the open sky. Hunter’s goal is to bring great classical music to those who might not otherwise have the opportunity to hear it in live performance while also reconnecting us with our beautiful natural environment. His boundary-breaking concerts have been presented at dozens of extraordinary locations throughout the American west and have been the subject of nationally televised documentaries.

This year, for the first

time, Hunter will bring his truck-mounted grand piano to Surprise Valley, performing at the old Eagleville Airport on the edge of the vast dry bed of Lower Alkaline Lake, with the Warner Mountains and Hays Range as a dramatic backdrop. Bring a chair or walk around during the concert, enjoying the music with special headsets provided by the organizers on site. Food and refreshments to take-away will be

available at the Eagleville Community Center courtesy of Surprise Valley Service Club and the Eagleville Volunteer Fire Department (cash only please!). While the concert is free to Modoc County residents, it is necessary to reserve a ticket which you can do by going to Noack’s website inalandscape.org and searching for the concert in the 2024 schedule. The ticket price for non-Modoc County residents is $40.

Offense did well with Trustin Thomas at quarterback and a monster rushing game from Andres Lopez for total yards of 159 yards from 8 carries. Colin Schluter carried the ball

5 times with 22 yards. Thomas Dolan received a catch and scored a touchdown which totaled 70 yards from the line of scrimmage. Colin Jeffers received the ball and ran it in totaling 42 yards.. Braves defense held up against the Bulldogs with the top 3 tacklers being David Toaetolu with 6 tackles, Colin Jeffers and Bruce Lewis with 5 tackles each and QB sacks from Bruce Lewis and Hunter Renigar and a fumble recovery by Colin Jeffers. Thank you all for supporting your Modoc Braves Football program. Go BRAVES

The 2024 Wild Horse Gather is set to begin on October 28th, 2024

Press Release

Provided by Modoc NF

The USDA Forest Service will begin gathering 500 wild horses from the Devil’s Garden Plateau Wild Horse Territory on October 28th, 2024, to continue moving toward the 206-402 appropriate management level, as prescribed by the 2013 Devil’s Garden Plateau Wild Horse Territory Management Plan.

The 2024 population census resulted in an estimate of 651 and 998 wild horses with an average of 723 wild horses on and around the territory. The Modoc National Forest remains committed to managing wild free-roaming horses in a manner that is designed to achieve and maintain a

thriving natural ecological balance and multiple-use relationship on public lands.

The Modoc National Forest has contracted CD Warner Livestock LLC to conduct the gathering. Gather contractors are utilizing mechanized equipment and bait traps to gather horses. If you come across a livestock corral in the forest, please avoid the area.

Due to the confined nature of viewing blinds, viewing of gather operations will be offered to 6 viewers a day, 7 days a week. Some trap sites may not allow for viewing and/or multiple viewers. To make viewing reservations please email sm.fs.modoc_info@usda. gov and include your name, phone number,

requested viewing dates, and the number of viewers in your party. If you are unable to email reservation requests, please call (530) 233-8738.

Viewers with reservations should arrive at 225 West Eighth St. in Alturas by 7 a.m. to follow forest personnel to the parking location. Viewers should be prepared to drive in rugged terrain, walk long distances across uneven and muddy terrain, and be exposed to inclement weather conditions such as rain and snow. Viewers should also be prepared to remain on site until gather operations have concluded for the day. Please bring plenty of food, water, and wear neutral colored clothing. We also recommend bringing a

folding chair, sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses. There are no restroom facilities at trap sites and often no cell service. Viewers must not interfere with gather operations.

Devil’s Garden Plateau wild horse information and gather updates are available on the web at https://go.usa.gov/ xQ3r3, on the Modoc National Forest Facebook page, and on Double Devil Wild Horse Corral’s Facebook page. If you are interested in adopting a Devil’s Garden wild horse, check out the Double Devil Corral Facebook page at https:// www.facebook.com/ doubledevilwild horsecorrals.
