LAPD Sergeant Killed Assisting Crash Victims on 405 Freeway in Brentwood
Tragic EarlyMorning Collision
Claims Two Lives, Including Veteran Sergeant
Two people, including an LAPD sergeant, were killed early Monday in a multi-vehicle crash that shut down all southbound lanes of the 405 Freeway near Moraga Drive for several hours.
The crash happened just before 2:00 a.m., when Sgt. Shiou Deng, a 26year department veteran, stopped to assist with a separate collision. While attempting to slow traffic by activating his rear amber lights and positioning his patrol car for protection, Deng was struck by an oncoming vehicle.
California Highway Patrol reported four individuals involved in the incident. One male, 34, died at the scene. Deng and another person, 45, were taken to Ronald

Reagan UCLA Medical Center. One of the transported patients was in grave condition, while a 35-year-old was listed as fair. A fourth person, age 26, declined hospital transport for minor injuries.
During the press conference held outside of Reagan Hospital, LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell said, “He was a deeply respected leader within our department and a trusted protector of our communities. His loss is immeasurable, and the grief we feel is shared not only by the men and women of the LAPD, but by the entire law enforcement family and

the residents he served so faithfully.” Deng served most of his LAPD career in the department’s Mental Evaluation Unit before earning the rank of sergeant two years ago. He was most recently assigned to the West Los Angeles Division.
By 12:18 p.m., CHP had lifted the SigAlert and reopened all southbound lanes.
Flags on Los Angeles city buildings were lowered to half-staff following announcements from Mayor Karen Bass. Governor Gavin Newsom also ordered
state flags flown at half-staff at the Capitol and Capitol Annex Swing Space. A procession of took the officer’s body from UCLA to the Medical Examiner’s office.
By late afternoon, fellow officers and community members had gathered outside the West LA Division, leaving white and blue roses next to Deng’s photograph in tribute. Chief McDonnell stated in a press release that details of Deng’s memorial would be released in the coming days.
Masked Federal Agents Detain Female Iranian Asylum Seeker in Westwood
31-Year-Old Woman was Hospitalized After Possible Medical Emergency
On Tuesday, June 24, between 11:00 a.m. and 11:30 a.m., near the intersection of Camden and Santa Monica Boulevard, on the southern side of Westwood, near the Sawtelle border, a 31-year-old Iranian asylum seeker was detained by what can only be assumed are five masked Federal agents, who were driving “regular civilian cars” and were not dressed in uniforms, other than tactical vests.
The following video, from the Instagram account Siempre Unidos, is disturbing: https://www.instagram.com/ reel/DLS2gbsS7Un/?igsh= MzRlODBiNWFlZA==
The woman, who is on the ground, is screaming as the male relative, possibly her husband, argues with the masked men, telling them that they are from Iran. The

witness discussing the situation with another witness says that one of the men was dressed as an Amazon employee, but we have not been able to confirm that.
In a separate video, the woman’s feet can be seen kicking in an unusual manner, and later, the woman was taken to UCLA Ronald Reagan Hospital, reportedly after suffering a possible seizure.
An agent was stationed in the woman’s room at the hospital to prevent anyone from entering the room, which is hospital procedure for someone in custody, including the woman’s lawyer.
LA Taco independently confirmed the report of the woman being taken to UCLA
Ronald Reagan. The Instagram account Mr. Checkpoint filmed a video of a UCLA staffer explaining the procedure inside the hospital.
https://www.instagram. com/reel/DLTUrYy6SX/?igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==
Finally, The Daily Bruin published a social media message which said, “Federal agents brought a person in custody to the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center emergency room earlier today, a UCLA Health spokesperson said in a statement to the Daily Bruin. They added that despite social media reports, there is no U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement raid taking place
at the medical center at this time.” However, there was no Bruin Alert or general news release that would alert the student body to ICE/DHS presence on campus.
The last news release on the UCLA website was from the UCLA staff and was entitled, “Reiterating Our Support for Our Immigrant and International Communities at UCLA.”

A.O.C. Brentwood to Close August 1 After 16 Years on San Vicente

Goin and Styne Cite Rising Costs, and Rent Pressures in
Decision
A.O.C. Brentwood, the acclaimed Westside outpost from James Beard Award-winning chef Suzanne Goin and restaurateur Caroline Styne, will close its doors on August 1 after 16 years in operation, the owners announced Friday.
Originally opened as Tavern in 2008 and later rebranded under the A.O.C. banner, the San Vicente Boulevard restaurant has served as a neighborhood staple for fine dining in a casual, elegant setting. Goin and Styne attributed the difficult decision to shutter the restaurant to a host of economic challenges faced by independent eateries across Los Angeles.
In a statement posted to social media, the owners pointed to “the aftereffects of COVID-19, followed by the actors’ and writers’ strikes, and then the fires,”
paired with unsustainably high rents, rising food and labor costs, and “mounting bureaucracy,” as major factors in the decision to close.
“We have loved our time as part of the Brentwood community; we love our staff, past and present, and we are grateful to our many loyal customers. We hope to see you over these next six weeks and raise a glass to our long run on the Westside. And of course, come visit us at our 3rd location @ aocla that will remain open!”
The restaurant will continue operating through July.
Goin and Styne also used the announcement to urge public support for local, independent restaurants, calling attention to advocacy organizations such as the Independent Hospitality Coalition and Independent Restaurant Coalition, which lobby for policies to sustain small food businesses.
“If you can, please go out and support places you love, not just the hot new ones, but your OLD FAVORITES too. ”
The original A.O.C. location on West Third Street will remain open.

Stopping to Smell the Roses

I’m generally not a “stop and smell the roses” type. I’ve always got something to do, and smelling roses takes time.
But I’ve been walking more than normal this year – I try and get in at least 5,000 steps a day – and it’s impossible to not see, admire – and yes, smell – all the flowers that are now in bloom.
Here are a few pictures I took while on yesterday’s walk:
Let’s hear it for our neighbors who go out of their way to make all these flowers available for all to see – and smell.
Speaking of vegetation, at the last meeting of the Brentwood Community Council, much time was spent discussing an executive order from Gavin Newsom that would require everyone to cut trees and bushes back, leaving at least five feet of space between foliage and a structure.
The idea, of course, is to keep burning plants from catching one’s home on fire.
Diana Nicole, an ecological horticulturist who attended the BCC meeting via Zoom, said policymakers should not rush into this. Some plants and trees actually help protect a home from catching fire, she said.
She showed several photos from both the Palisades and Altadena fires showing homes reduced to ash while surrounding trees were

still standing – and green.
In Brentwood, we love our trees, so let’s hope our governor, elected officials, and their staff do their homework on this one.
Here’s a very informative article from The Conversation that might help: https:// theconversation.com/california-plan-to-banmost-plants-within-5-feet-of-homes-forwildfire-safety-overlooks-some-importanttruths-about-flammability-257109

Fire, of course, remains on everyone’s mind.
The Brentwood Homeowners Association, in cooperation with the Brentwood Community Council, held a “Harden Your Home” event at St. Martin of Tours on Saturday, June 14. Several vendors exhibited products intended to reduce the risk of a fire spreading.
Time for my next walk! See you in the ’hood!

Paris Hilton Buys Mark Wahlberg’s Beverly Park Mansion for $63.1M

The Heiress and Media Mogul Joins a Star-Studded Neighborhood
Paris Hilton and husband Carter Reum have purchased a high-profile estate in Beverly Park, acquiring the former home of actor Mark Wahlberg for $63.1 million, according to a report from The Wall Street Journal. The deal marks a significant entry into the exclusive gated enclave, known for its celebrity residents and multimilliondollar compounds.
Originally listed for $68 million in March, the expansive property at 71 Beverly Park traded hands at a markdown. The sellers, linked to Chinese billionaire Xu Hang and his wife Gu Fang, had acquired the property in February 2023 for $55 million, well below Wahlberg’s initial
$87.5 million asking price in 2022.
Hilton, a media entrepreneur and heiress to the Hilton hotel fortune, lost her Malibu home during the Los Angeles wildfires. Her new residence places her among elite neighbors such as Adele, Justin Bieber, Sylvester Stallone, Eddie Murphy, Rod Stewart, and Sofia Vergara.
Hilton’s representatives for the deal were her brother Barron N. Hilton and his wife Tessa Hilton, who co-founded luxury brokerage Hilton Hilton. The sellers were represented by Ginger Glass and Alexandra Glass of Compass.
Hilton, a former reality TV star turned business mogul, oversees 11:11 Media, a sprawling entertainment and branding enterprise that includes film and television production, podcasting, digital media, licensing, and music ventures.
The sellers also purchased Rihanna’s Century City penthouse last year for $20.8 million, adding to their growing real estate portfolio.

New Agenda Coaching: Changing Lives in LA Students Work
Toward Applied
Success with Executive Function Coaching Services
The demands of daily routines and studies sometimes bear weight on students, creating cycles of frustration, stress, procrastination and withdrawal of effort.
With new in-office and remote coaching sessions offered in Los Angeles, New Agenda Coaching has created a workaround for students experiencing this weight that helps them strengthen executive function skills such as working memory, cognitive flexibility, inhibition, organization and task initiation.
Executive functioning refers to a set of cognitive skills and processes that help individuals manage and regulate their thoughts, behaviors and emotions to achieve specific goals or tasks.
Founded by Maria Del Corso and Amie Davies, New Agenda believes strong executive function skills lead to higher performance in addition to life-long benefits for children, teens and college students.
Since offering services in Los Angeles for ages nine and over, New Agenda said many school-aged clients who finished
school in May have a changed perspective and shifted their trajectories to find success through coaching services.
“From a standpoint of our upper elementary, middle and high school students who have been in a struggle zone, or experiencing some sort of multifaceted failure, they have finished out the school year in a completely different place, in terms of their positive perspective and outlook toward school and academic performance. They are really finding applicable success,” Del Corso said.
This summer, New Agenda recommends school-aged students start New Agenda’s coaching services ahead of the school year.
“Once school starts, you’re in that routine: work is piling up and you have to triage academics a little bit. Over the summer is a great time to strictly focus on executive function skills and figure out what areas we need to build and focus while you don’t have the pressure of academics,” Del Corso said.
New Agenda Coaching works with new clients at minimum once per week in one hour sessions, for no specific term length. Working one-on-one with coaches, clients learn skill building and strategies to achieve goals and combat concerns related to executive dysfunction.
Using a team approach, New Agenda works collaboratively with the client’s psychiatrists, therapists or counselors, to make sure everyone is on the same page.
“If a student is already working with a psychiatrist, we’re on board with them

to help better the trajectory, and help the client reach goals,” Davies said.
Looking ahead, how does a parent know if their school-aged child has executive function issues, or any sort of processing disorder that impacts their studies? Del Corso said it’s often seen in the way the student responds to requests that are meant to hold them accountable.
“We see a lot of students who deflect and say, school doesn’t matter. Homework doesn’t matter, or they don’t care, that school is boring, grades are declining. When we hear those things, it’s because they are struggling and they are not in their optimal state. Our coaches have strong knowledge in relationship building pieces that engage students to be more proactive in both academic and social settings,” Del

Corso said.
New Agenda uses a relationship-based approach to support learning and practicing organizational strategies in academics, career and lifestyle management, offering support for students, adults, seniors and the exceptional — people with intellectual disabilities, autism or down syndrome, people who are developmentally delayed or suffer the effects of a traumatic brain injury or other health impairment.
Coaching helps guide the development of life skills, coordinated with the use of customized strategies to aid focus, memory, accountability, motivation and planning, leading to greater independence.

US Marines Temporarily Detain Civilian Near Federal Building in West Los Angeles Military
Confirms First Known Detention by Active-Duty Troops
Deployed by Trump
U.S. Marines temporarily detained a civilian near the Wilshire Federal Building on Friday, marking the first known instance of active-duty troops participating in a detention during their recent deployment to Los Angeles, as reported by CBS News.
The incident occurred as approximately 200 Marines began guarding the federal complex in Westwood, following President Donald Trump’s controversial decision to deploy troops in response to widespread protests over immigration enforcement operations. Photographs obtained by Reuters show Marines restraining a man with zip ties before transferring him to agents from the Department of Homeland Security.
Military officials later confirmed the incident, stating that active-duty troops are authorized to detain individuals under limited circumstances but must
immediately hand them over to civilian law enforcement.
The civilian, identified as Marcos Leao, 27, told reporters he was a U.S. Army veteran en route to a Department of Veterans Affairs office when he crossed a police barrier and was mistakenly detained. Leao, who became a U.S. citizen through military service, said he was treated “very fairly” and released shortly after.
Leao said, as quoted by Military.com, “I had my headphones in, so I didn’t hear them. They told me to get down on the ground. I basically complied with everything they were saying.” He was held for over two hours after attempting to go to an appointment at the Veterans Affairs office.
The deployment of federal forces in Los Angeles has drawn sharp criticism from California Gov. Gavin Newsom, who labeled the move “authoritarian” and filed a legal challenge to block it. Although a federal judge initially ruled in favor of the state on Thursday, an appeals court later paused that order. The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals is scheduled to hear the case on June 17. In the meantime, troops are authorized to remain in the city.
Trump ordered more than 2,000 National Guard soldiers and 700 Marines into Los Angeles last weekend amid unrest tied to

immigration raids. Military officials said the primary mission is to protect federal property and personnel, not to engage directly in law enforcement. Nonetheless, the presence of armed troops in riot gear— including shields, batons, and gas masks— has sparked unease among city officials.
During a Friday news briefing, Maj. Gen. Scott M. Sherman said the Marines arrived in L.A. on Thursday night and officially began operations Friday at noon. He reiterated that their mandate is restricted to federal sites, such as the Wilshire Federal Building.
Mayor Karen Bass denounced both the ICE raids and the federal troop presence in the city. “Los Angeles does not need armed military on its streets,” she said in a statement.
ICE activity has surged nationwide in recent days. Internal data obtained by CBS News show that 1,400 and 1,600 immigration arrests were carried out on Wednesday and Thursday, respectively, with over 56,000 individuals now held in ICE detention centers—a record for the agency. While arrests have more than doubled since Trump’s first 100 days in office, they still fall short of the daily 3,000 target reportedly set by the White House. Officials have not confirmed whether Trump will invoke the Insurrection Act, which would allow federal troops to carry out law enforcement duties directly. Under the Posse Comitatus Act, the military is generally barred from engaging in civilian law enforcement activities without such an invocation.

Jim Athans For Governor

I cannot tell you the outrage I feel with this administration's position in the Ukraine war. The last gem that was offered was that Ukraine and Russia should just fight it out some more. As if the innocent human lives—men, women, and children—of a democratic, freedom-loving people are not valuable beyond measure. I cannot believe that a sitting American president can take such a departure from American foreign policy, in which Democrats and Republicans alike have taken a decades-long stand against the spread of communism and tyranny in the world—and at great cost, too. We have always banded together. We have always stood arm in arm with other freedomloving peoples of the world. The Democrats have been the Republicans on this issue. I will forever be grateful to former President Joe Biden for rising to the defense of the Ukrainian people. Despite some real ideological differences, Joe Biden was right on this issue. I will go out on a limb and say $350 billion was a bargain for what was achieved with our support in the war in Ukraine. And while I am sad about losses on both sides of that conflict, it is significant that Russia's losses are so profound as to have disabled them from participation in other theaters around the world which they supported, such as the Middle East. With an estimated 1 million Russian casualties, it cannot be underestimated—the cost to Russia as a nation. The entire war machine of Russia, the entire infrastructure, has received a direct hit, including an estimated 40% of their military air capabilities, compromising their ability to wage war around the world.
Why does it matter to California?
I truly believe that California needs to take its place as one of the largest freemarket economies in the world—and to use its influence to affect change around the world.
A Tariff Trade-Off
Whether ‘tis nobler—taking charge of our financial future, recreating a long-gone manufacturing base by a grassroots, bully-pulpit-led campaign in which Californians are encouraged to buy American, to buy California, and thereby take hold of their financial destiny—or to extract additional tariffs at great cost to already fragile

relationships, in which negative consequences for the United States of America cannot be fully quantified.
China does not deserve for us to be that nice to them. China needs to be excluded from our economic consciousness. Buy American, buy California.
A chicken in every pot.
A toy manufactured in California under every Christmas tree.
I want to preserve California's autonomy.
I want to wield its influence.
